This is absolutely a worthy sequel! I loved the way it felt only slightly more mature than the first film, and had a far more nuanced approach to all of the emotions and the roles they play on our beliefs. Enjoy :)

The problem with this movie is that its basically the same story as the first one, just less nuanced, and the new emotions dont get much time at all aside from anxiety. its not bad but it doesnt compare to the first in my opinion, sadly

I love your reactions! Out of curiosity have seen or do you plan do do any studio ghibli movies? If you haven't seen them I would love to see your reactions to them they are beautiful films.

JT

absolutely love this movie. Joy is truly one of my favorite Pixar characters.

I didn't care for the first one. Saw it in the theater and thought whatever. Took my son to the second. He loved it but I still couldn't get into it. I didn't hate it but it just whatever. Whatching this with you tonight I teared up so many times. Idk if I just paid attention more or what but damn I was a mess. The movie is still fine for me. I feel I related to it more but it could also be due to the fact that I'm a baby with emotions. Either way, great reaction

Ae Jae

Still waiting cor Joseph King of Dreams after Prince of Egypt. Im surprised that's never a followup as they go hand in hand with what they are. If you don't read my comment I hope so l else will recommend it. It's not as powerful but just as beautiful

I was Riley's age when the first Inside Out movie came out and it was a very emotional time because my parents were going through a divorce and my sister and I had to start organizing ourselves to spend a week at one house, a week at the other and it was a lot of change all at once when we were really young. It made us realize how hard life was and our innocence started to fade away. I don't think I've ever cried so much at another movie. When I found out that Pixar was making a sequel, I was both excited and nervous because the first one was such a success that I thought they would never be able to top it. I still can't decide which one I prefer, but Inside Out 2 was just as relatable as the first one. Not because I play hockey, but because I've been battling anxiety for years. I have panic attacks for no reason, I have very low self-confidence, and I constantly put pressure on myself. I recently realized that it's nothing to be ashamed of and that I should talk about it. It has done me a lot of good and I feel a lot less stress now. If you feel anxious or stressed all the time, it's not healthy and you really need to find people you trust to talk to about it. Don't be ashamed of who you are

Holly

fun fact: the voice actor of Anxiety is Maya Hawke who plays a character named Robin in season three of Stranger Things. I'm so excited for you to get to that season, the best season in the entire show. :D

Shanae K.

I'm so excited to watch this with you.

I enjoy this a lot more then the first one. Sure losing bing bong and the scene at the end was sad but this one is just, wow. I won’t get tired of watching it. I’ve seen it like 10 times with other reactors lol. There’s just something about it that grabs more of my attention. It’s more complex, more relatable, and more impactful for me. They depicted each emotion perfectly. People say this is the same as the first movie but I disagree, I just don’t see it. The only thing similar is joy learning a lesson. Besides that everything else is not the same. The first was more about the emotions and joy learning to relinquish control and learning that all the emotions are important and it’s healthy to feel all of them. This one is more about Riley and her learning that it’s ok if she messes up from time to time and her learning to accept herself for who she is rather then pretending to be who she’s not in order to please others. A fabulous reaction, can’t wait to see what the next animation is!

as someone with severe anxiety, just... god. every scene with the character had me like "omg that is literally me." the way they showed her having an anxiety attack hit hard, and i loved how she grounded herself with breathing, touching the wood and hearing the sounds around her; such a good little teaching moment for kids going through similar stuff!

Heather Geer

I’ve never seen a more relatable movie honestly. I LOVE how they depicted anxiety so accurately, but also not as just solely the “bad guy”. It usually stems from wanting the best, but gets out of control. I love the moral in this that our good moments AND our mistakes make us who we are. Sooo glad you watched this. I was curious what you would think of it since you really enjoyed the first one!

Teej

Can’t wait to watch this!!! I haven’t seen this movie yet!

First time watching this one too

Shanae K.

I'm on the same boat with you guys. I haven't seen it either. Good choice too

I love your interpretation of how joy takes on a new meaning as you grow. That's a beautiful way to look at it! (Plus the visual depiction of that in the film is stunning). And i really appreciate your take that it's not about "which movie is better?" but rather that they’re linked and they enhance each other, which not all sequels do. I *adore* the first Inside Out, but 2 hit me a lot harder. As we age, any long-held beliefs like "I'm not good enough," can become that much harder to let go of and more painful. I got a lot of healing from this movie and it seems to me a lot of others did, too. 💚

I just got to the part of the movie where Riley goes in early to work on her hockey skills. This has always been me. I’m the kind of perfectionist where if I’m not good at something immediately, I will work and work until I can master it. It reminded me of when I was in a play for a summer theatre workshop I used to do (and I actually direct now). It was the first time I was ever given a lead and I had several really long monologues and I never left the stage. One day at rehearsal, I messed up one word. It bothered me so much that when I got home, I went out on the porch and kept going through my lines and ended up falling asleep on the porch. I’m still very much that way. I’m always working to try and get better. I admit that it isn’t exactly healthy, but it helps me get better at what I do. I admit that I do need to find a balance.

aleena

this movie is like excruciatingly relatable lol. kind of makes me happy i'm not 13 years old anymore bc good lord, i was a mess 😭😭 being this awkward and overly emotional is a canon event for every girl for sure. i especially love the part where the emotions only touch the console a little bit but it comes on wayy too strong. it's so so real.

chvrrvism

the thing about your frontal lobe developing at 25 isn't just for men, but for everyone. it also isnt necessarily that age specifically, but its around mid to late 20's

Sarah

I also was worried how they would resolve the conflict of joy and anxiety, but that was even better than I hoped. It came together perfectly. Also, as someone who seriously struggles with anxiety, that scene towards the end is unbelievably accurate. I still cannot believe how good the representation of psychological concepts is in this movie. I also loved how they focussed on anxiety not only being useful if managed well, but on how much anxiety cared for Riley, even when her methods were far to extreme. That is something I've come to learn in therapy: Even if it isn't helpful in a situation, that part of us is still trying to protect us, it's not our enemy. It is trying to tell us something and we get to act on that information, we just shouldn't let it control us.

Sarah

Now that you have watched Inside Out 2... what about Frozen 2? It's such a good sequel. Similar to this movie it builds on the focus of the first one in a much more complex, mature and nuanced way. Definitely worth a watch!

Sarah Marion

@53:40 Mike T’s been obsessing over me?

Shanae K.

It's time to get cozy, and might have to buckle up. I'm grateful watching. I might emotional. If I do. I'll leave comment.

aleena

i think the whole thing about the frontal lobe being fully mature by age 25 (or like mid twenties in general) is mainly about the development of the prefrontal cortex, which has to do with regulating impulse, emotions, and decision-making. it connects to a lot of other locations in the brain that control the release of neurotransmitters (e.g. dopamine, norepinephrine) so it's very influential to our emotional states. i think there are subsections of the prefrontal cortex as well that deal with different aspects of all this but i don't know that much lol. i'm fully going off of one neuroscience unit from an anatomy & physiology class i took 2 quarters ago but i hope to study more about it in the future!

Shanae K.

I got extremely emotional during the anxiety science. It was beautiful. They did amazing. I'm so grateful I got watch with you, Oscar. I felt more relaxed.

Shanae K.

I was reading a book how to rewire your anxious brain. You cognitive thoughts can trigger the amygala. Those connections are supposed to happen. Wait what? They're two type of anxiety.

Shanae K.

If I may asked anyone on personal level. Is anyone in the liminal state? Are you, Oscar? I am. I think I might have just found out who I am.

Teej

Finally finished it! Dang this franchise for making me cry again! I remember watching the first one when it came out and that one hit me like a brick wall as someone who has major depression. Specifically Riley trying to be her parents’ “happy girl” and kind of saying, “Everything’s fine” were things I really relate to. But this movie, even though I don’t struggle with anxiety, the thought of “I’m not good enough” which stems from my depression is a lifelong kind of battle that I really relate to in my own life, so that made me quite emotional. This movie is once again very well done and absolutely beautiful. Such a great watch!

Kristine

Actually been waiting for you to react to this one!

Kim Lycan

As a counselor I have to say these movies are so amazing for my work with kiddos and teens. The characters and arcs are so relatable and are helpful teaching tools for therapy skills.

Jim Schmitz

Hi, Oscar. Joining the gang who are first timers to this, As a sequel continuing the story, the depiction of more integrated emotions rings so true. I just think it was a bit simplistic to have it all work out when she was only 13, but I guess that's all that can be done in an hour and a half. Another aspect of this time of life is dealt with in Pixar's "Turning Red". Your observations and reflections were, as always, spot on.

Raven Dark

Hi, Oscar. I hope you still get comments on these. Your reaction to both the first Inside Out and this one are wonderful. These movies are genius level, and I can't get over how good they are. I loved seeing how deeply they both affected you. After seeing your reaction to these and other films, I have to highly recommend a movie called The Croods. It's another well done movie with lots of heart, great humor, and a beautiful message. Also some really good, fun voice acting. Thanks again.

Katie Niekamp

I thought this movie did an amazing job of capturing what it's like to have a panic attack. It's like your brain has shorted out and you can't think but your brain is also buzzing and swirling at a million miles an hour. And then anxiety started tearing up while being frozen and that just hit me so hard. Panic attacks suck.

Liam

Well its good to have good thoughts about yourself having nothing but good thoughts about yourself is arrogant and dangerous for you and others.

Melissa Creel

As someone that deals with depression and anxiety, that climactic scene with anxiety glitching is so real. That is what it feels like in my brain sometimes. Whomever wrote this either experiences anxiety or lives with someone who does. It was very well done. And love your reaction as usual..
