Oh my sweet Jesus, I ADORE this movie! The music is SUPERB! Dario Marianelli ftw 🙌🏻

ANGELA

MY FAVORITE MOVIE 😭 WITH MY FAVORITE REACTOR! OMG! ❤️ definitely watching when I get home 🥹🥹

Debbie

Great movie and also one of my favorite books. And the 1990s version with Colin Firth is also amazing

Emily D Fredriksen

Oh I haven’t seen this one. Interesting, I am looking forward to it :) Day 66: ( of suggesting my girl 1991 )

Wall-E

Oh damn, as soon as I get home, I’m going to sit down and enjoy this reaction. Thank you, Oscar.

Aleksander

Please watch how to train your dragon, sing movies and Moana 2❤️

Vanesa Jimenez

I am so excited. I love this movies. 😀

OH MY GODDDD MY ENTIRE NIGHT HAS BEEN MADE

Fireflye97

If you liked this one, you would most likely like Sense and Sensibility - another Jane Austen book/movie!

Kristen Rose

I love that you watched this !!! I adore this adaptation. But if you're ever bored, you should check out the mini- series from 1995 with Colin Firth ... it's much more accurate to the book and its only 6 episodes. On another note, now you gotta watch Bridget Jones Diary which is a loose adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

Brittney Alvarez

Yes! Such a beautiful film from the cinematography to the score and grade A performances. The whole atmosphere they created just makes this one of my favorite comfort films. Blasphemous to some but I much prefer this film to the short 90’s tv series 🙈 So looking forward to this 😊

Ken R

I can't stand these types of films. Have anything in Star Trek or Batman, Flash Gordon or maybe a disaster movie?

Girls Always

Day 1 of asking Oscar to react to The Umbrella Academy

Liam

You should watch doctor who (2005 - 2017)

Keirstin Meunier

I screamed when I got this notification!!! One of my all-time FAVES!

Anna H

Between the soft visuals, cinematography, the music, and the authentic family bond of the Bennets -- all these things and more make this a major comfort movie for me, hands down :) I'm so happy you loved it too!

lauren ☆

oscar getting flustered at the hand flex... he's one of us

Cory Treadwell

I always think it’s funny how they make the Bennett’s out to be beneath them, when in actuality Mr. Darcy and the Bennett’s are in the same social class (The Gentry/ upper class). Jane technically married beneath her social class marrying Middle Class.

Lily

You would fucking adore little women (2019(

Ali D

It will make you emotional in a different way but I’d love to see you react to Atonement. Same director, same composer, Keira Knightley again, but an altogether different feeling.

Desiree Mclaughlin

I know that the 1995 version is more faithful to the book, and I absolutely adore it, but this movie is so beautiful from start to finish. The music, the cinematography, the sets, all fantastic.

Maisie

This was such a delight to watch with you! You constantly amaze me with how perceptive you are. I've seen this movie 5 times and you noticed things I never have. I love Jane Austen, and it's a joy to watch someone who shows such understanding of the nuances of each witticism and insult. If you enjoyed this, I'd highly recommend Downton Abbey as a TV show you would like, particularly the first two seasons. It's a period piece set in an England at the turn of the last century, and follows the lives of the servants, cook, and valet as well as the lord and his family.

Kate

Hard to believe this movie turns 20 this year! Truly timeless. One of my all time favorite films. The acting, the cinematography, the score - after my first watch in 2005 I immediately went out and bought the soundtrack and it’s been in rotation ever since. Liz on Top of the World (the track where she’s on the cliff) was my #1 song in itunes for years and years. I really really loved this reaction because as always you notice the little details and the subtext and I really appreciate that a lot. I’ve never seen a reactor catch Darcy’s double take right at the beginning. He was down bad from the get go lol. That scene in the rain, yes it is different from the book and miniseries but my god is it perfectly done. The tension, the way they slowly get closer and closer, the way he actually looks at her lips and bends down, their eye contact….hoo boy it doesn’t get better than that. And then, the scene at the end when he comes striding out of the mist as the music swells…I mean, come onnnn it’s perfection. The soft tones, the stutter, the relaxed clothing, it just all comes together to show how much of an impact she’s had on him. And then we see the impact he’s had on her when she’s talking with her dad in his study. They both truly did grow as people over the course of the film and it’s so nice to see. I could write paragraphs more but this comment is already long enough lol. I’m just so happy you enjoyed the film and I really appreciate how you just got who the characters were. P.S. there were actually 2 HG people in this - the actress who played Lydia played Johanna, the angry ax girl from the second film on. Really just an all star cast all around.

Upasana Natarajan

If you enjoy Jane Austen, Emma (2020) is a really fun Wes Anderson-esque (though he's not the director) take on her work. Every actor brings a uniquely comedic spin to their character and the cast is great.

lauren ☆

okay so now you're going to have to watch the other great jane austen adaptation, emma. (2020)

Jim Schmitz

A timeless classic, to be sure. I can't think of any romance that has had so many adaptations. The use of language and the politeness of the culture, whether real or feigned, just enthralls me. Whenever I see someone truly enjoy this, I must recommend "Bridgerton". A very similar vibe.

Brittney Alvarez

Oscar! You recognized Mr. Bennett is President Snow but did you notice that Lydia is Joanna Mason from Hunger Games? 😁 Anyways really glad you enjoyed the movie and plan to watch it again haha. You had all of the appropriate reactions to the tense and swoon worthy moments between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy (that hand flex though) - I definitely chanted “one of us, one of us” 😂

Fireflye97

"What most excellent boiled potatoes."

Anna H

On a separate note: your reaction to the hand flex was perfect 😂

Shanae K.

I never seen this. It's my grandmother favorite movie.

aleena

jane austen is so real bc if i wrote a book, i would also name the gorgeous, kind, perfect side character after myself

Jada

atonement or gone girl could be really fun to react to

Clara Hines

If you've never seen the 1995 version, do so. It's the one I grew up with, and it's a BBC miniseries. It's closer to the book than the movie.

Rhetorical Thrill

The only adaptation I've seen of P&P until now was Bridget Jones's Diary 🤣 which is actually a lot of fun

Sarah

I sacrificed a full night of sleep to watch this as soon as possible and it was so worth it, great reaction! It always makes me so happy when someone truly appreciates great movie scores, so please do a video where you play a piece out of the movie if possible, that would be so cool! Also I have to suggest again that you watch The Last Five Years. There is so much potential for analyzing the characters in it. It is also mainly composed of one character singing to the other and the other just listening and silently reacting, which I remember you being interested in, and the acting of both main characters when listening is just brilliant in my opinion. And of course the songs themselves are just beautiful, incidentally the composer is known for the complex amazing piano that often accompanies the singing. Wow, I had to fight so hard not to slip into the older English from the movie in this whole comment xD

Jim Schmitz

Another 'bangin' period drama that gets no reactions as I'm aware is: "Cranford". It's a star-studded turn-of-the-century British mini-series.

JiaHailstorm

I was supposed to just watch a little bit before I had to do some work. Well, I couldn't put down the reaction so safe to say I absolutely loved it! Your genuiness and enjoyment of the movie sucked me in. So thank you for the great reaction!

D2K9

“You have bewitched me, body and soul.” Oh my gosh what a line.

Victoria Tofoli

Would love to see you react to bridgerton someday. Season 2 is another VERY well done enemies to lovers plot and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Anna H

*About Mr Collins being directed to a seat away from Charlotte at the table -- this is apparently not uncommon at all in very posh, very "upper-crust" settings that at dinner if you accompanied someone you already knew (particularly if they're a spouse), you get placed next to someone else for the sake of getting better acquainted with new people. I experienced this some years back at what was the first (and likely only time lol) I attended a dinner hosted by someone who came from old money. But yeah, everything was so elegant and proper, and the guy had carefully assigned seats so as you weren't directly next to whoever you came with

Anna H

And on one more separate note: you should watch Ever After with Drew Barrymore if you haven't seen it! Another comfort romance classic if you were in the mood for it

Michael

Now that you have seen this, will you watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

Miss G

I've followed you for a while and very much enjoy watching you enjoy my favourite movies, but this one made me join Patreon. Pride and Prejudice is my favourite book- and movie- and I just had to view the full thing. Watching you sink into it was so enjoyable I was shouting and squealing right along with you. And your reaction to the walk across the fields? Yeah, I had to take a moment the first time I saw that scene it was just so impactful.

glory

i think you would love bridgerton!!!

Myranda

This is definitely my favorite movie! I rewatch it all the time. Like you touched on a lot throughout it, I think my favorite thing about this movie is the subtlety of almost everything. Everything is conveyed through a look, or through body language, or through one word. There wasn't really anything physical in this movie at all and yet you felt the feelings and the affection and sometimes the passion that the characters felt for each other. It's stuff that you almost miss if you're not paying attention (like the double take Darcy does when he sees Lizzie for the first time, I didn't notice that until like the third time I watched this). And I love this portrayal of Darcy, he did everything for her because he loved her and yet still was not expecting anything in return. He didn't do all that stuff to win her back, obviously he hoped her feelings had changed but that's not why he did it. He did it because he cared about her and realized he had made some mistakes and, like an honest good man, wanted to fix them. When she turned him down the first time, he respected that and took her word for what it was. And then at the end, he professes his feelings again and says he hopes she changed her mind, but that he would honor her feelings if she still felt the same way. We love a man that respects boundaries! This movie truly is the epitome of the female gaze because the number of girls/women that I know that go absolutely crazy over the hand flexing scene after Darcy helps her into the carriage is just insane !! It's all about the little things

Kjrsten Schindler

I forgot how much I loved this movie! Thank you for re-introducing me to it! Two period pieces I think you would really love would be the Count of Monte Cristo and the Scarlet Pimpernel… They are amazing period pieces!

_Skyscore_

If you liked this than you totally should watch Sense and Sensibility (1995). Also from Jane Austen and with a fantastic cast.

Tom

Excellent movie. Enjoyed your reaction. Here's another classic suggestion from me. The Lion in Winter if you haven't seen it. Peter O'toole, Katherine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins. Superb acting, emotional and monstrous. Clever script. Fiction but closer to historical fact than you would think. Katherine Hepburn delivers some lines that will have you spitting out your tea!

Andrea Ortega

Oscar, you need to Watch Little women of the year 2020

Elizabeth Baker

I am so glad you reacted to this movie, it’s one of my favorites. I was watching it, for the umpteenth time, the other day, and I was hoping that you would react to it, and you did. I decided to become a member here, because I absolutely love your reactions, and want to see your full reactions. You are by far my favorite movie reactor, we have very similar tastes. There are so many movies I’m hoping you will react to. By the way, I completely agree with Andrea Ortega, the 2020 Little Women movie is great.

Maisie

Re-watching this fantastic reaction and I realized you asked some questions which may not have been answered: The Bennett family would likely have been considered upper-middle class or very low upper-class--comfortable and well-off rather than very wealthy. It was considered terribly improper to approach someone in a formal setting without being introduced. Mr. Collins should have asked Mr. Bennett to introduce him to Mr. Darcy before speaking to the gentleman. This is part pf the reason that Mr. Bennett needed to visit Mr. Bingley before the rest of the family could meet him (as head of household, he acted as an introduction for the household.) Yes, it was a rule that spouses did not sit next to one another at dinner. They did often sit across from each other, because seating was done according to ranking. The highest ranked people were seated towards the head of the table near the host, and were seated in order of importance. Hence Darcy is seated next to Lady Catherine and Charlotte and Elizabeth are at the opposite end. Elizabeth is 20 years old when the novel begins. Jane is the oldest at 22, and Lydia the youngest at 15. A daughter coming "out" in society meant they were eligible for courting and marriage. As Lydia was already out at 15 ("What? All five daughters out at once?"), she was technically eligible. Unfortunately, while it would have been unusual for a girl her age to be married, Mr. Wickham would not have been considered entirely improper for marrying her at that age since she was out--if, of course, he hadn't been so dishonorable as to abscond with her first!

M

For another period piece, you should watch Belle (2014) — based on true story and SO well done!!

sanna schoebloom

Oh, i love how your reactions are so honest, genuine and vulnerable. Also how you get into the characters' mind and try to see beyond what is said. Thanks so very much. Keep going!

Statmanjeff

Now that you’ve seen Pride & Prejudice (2005) (one of my few favorite go-to movies when I want to see something excellently and adorably crafted), Bend It Like Beckham (2002) would be a good follow up. Why? Well, the tone is much the same, the humor is equally good, and it shares an actor between them.

Kate

So I don’t know if they’re doing it in Australia but for the 20th anniversary they’re re-releasing this in theaters in the US around April 20th. Maybe you’d like to go see it on the big screen if you can : ) I already got my tickets!

Miss G

Everytime I watch this movie something different hits me. This time it's Lizzie saying she knows Darcy only a little during the tour of Pemberley. It's an acknowledgement I love that despite her knowing him for about nine months or so at this point, everything she THOUGHT she knew just got turned on its head. She finally realises that so much of what she knew was from others' opinions and lies and her own prejudiced views of his actions, and what she ACTUALLY knows about him amounts to so little. I like what you said, that she's almost at a neutral position, and from here everything she sees and her own changed point of view of past events finally puts him in such a favourable light. Man I love this story so much

Angela McGovern

I loved watching this whole video. I loved your reaction and commentary. You were so spot on with so many things.. I've watched it twice now :)

KJ

I have the soundtrack in a playlist for my anxiety. It's so beautiful and calming.

shawnee douglas

This is one of my favourite films. I absolutely adore period films like this.

Nicole Andrews

I have watched a lot of reactions to Pride and Prejudice, and I have to say, your reaction is the absolute best one ever!!! I love it!!! 💕

Marisa Hill

Another fun one to check out that isn't as thought of is "Lost in Austen" 2008 film.

AmeliaHolmes

Ohmygoodness, yes, you should totally try to learn one of the piano pieces! The score is so beautiful! By the way you’re definitely one of the most insightful people (particularly men) I’ve ever seen watch/react to this movie! You picked up on every nuance, historical context, social cue, etc! Good on ya!

Statmanjeff

Absolutely love this film. Notes: (1) The joke that’s likely missed by viewers: At Mr. Bingley’s private ball, Lydia approaches her parents excitedly. “Mama! You will never, ever, EVER believe in what I'm about to tell you.” Mrs. Bennet says, “Well, tell me quickly, my love.” Before Lydia can continue, Mr. Bennet cuts in dryly, “She's going to take the veil.” Viewers have yet to learn enough about Lydia to know how clever Mr. Bennet is being at guessing the most unlikely thing to ever hear from Lydia. (2) I know you’ve said you don’t like to compare this release with others, but this adaptation does a tremendous job at making Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy three-dimensional. Other releases tend to paint these two men, more or less, as one or two-dimensional shallow boobs, making it clear that this is a chick flick, so to speak. (3) The weakest point in the story is the friendship connection between Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. It is not evident. By contrast, in the Harry Potter series, the friendship connection between Ron Weasley and Harry Potter is most evident: each boy deeply desires what the other boy has. For Harry, a full and loving family; for Ron, notoriety. In Pride & Prejudice, the only apparent thing between Bingley and Darcy is that Bingley is amiable and Darcy is painfully shy. It doesn’t quite explain why these two have a strong and loyal friendship. (4) Director Joe Wright has done the most stupendous job ever of making a previous century party scene look like something desirable. Most times (such as in all “A Christmas Carol” (Ebenezer Scrooge) Christmas party scenes at Mr. Fezziwig’s, the action and joviality feels forced. “We’ll SHOW you what a GOOD time WE’RE having,” they seems to say. In this, Joe Wright has blurred the confines of the chpreography to allow viewers to see the appeal of balls — places where people can gather, mingle, let loose and have a good time. Rarely (or never) has there been a previous century party on film that makes the viewer wish they could attend. (Closest things are a few square dance sequences in country films where the cast makes it seem like they’re having some of the best films of their lives.). Kudos, kudos, kudos.

Ali D

**whispers** Does anyone else come back and watch this again every once in a while?

Morgan

Yes to the person’s comment who suggested Ever After! I think you’d love it
