Well that was intense to say the least... but BOY what an incredible film!!! Such incredible performances and the whole question of is it worth it to push people to their absolute limit to achieve greatness was so interesting to follow. Enjoy :)

Yes!!! OMG I'm so excited THANK YOU OSCAR!

oh MAN this is a good one... would LOVE to see you react to sound of music one day!!!

“Looks like we’ve got a slower-paced movie”… yeah, if you like successive heart attacks from the STRESS of this movie 😭😂

A similar film in the "Pursuit of Greatness but at What Cost" thread is Black Swan, though it's definitely more of a horror/thriller. Absolutely worth checking out if there's an interest. There's a great video essay that breaks down and compares both screenplays, I think it was called "Anatomy of the obsessed artist" -- also something people should check out!

Nice! Oscar, you should have a raffle or something where a subscriber gets to program your movies for a week.

Shanae K.

I've never heard of this. Thanks your reaction. This seems like my type of movie.

Rhetorical Thrill

I just recently saw this one myself and it scared me more than any horror movie 😳

This is one of my favorite films of all time!!! Can’t wait to watch your reaction to it when I can… I feel weird saying that it’s one of my favorite films because it does hit home for me quite a bit. When you’re in the arts in any capacity, especially music or musical theatre, pretty much everyone has stories of educators they’ve had like this. I went to a high school that is known for their music program, and I was in concert choir which is the highest choir you can be in. Our choir teacher was ruthless. He threw music stands and chairs. He screamed in kids’ faces. My senior year, during one morning rehearsal, I passed out and fell off the top riser and got a concussion from hitting my head on the stage. I was very much not well from that, and I was at the concert and performed days later because he demanded it. I also went to college for musical theatre, and I had an acting professor who would use the tactic of learning personal things about you to use it against you in class. It’s wild.

All the percussionists I've been in touch with either hate or despise this movie. I must say that I do too, and I so wanted it to be good good good since I compose for percussion ensembles.

I honestly have never heard of this movie, I am intrigued Day 95: of suggesting (my girl 1991)

I'm so glad i could watch this again after so many years, and aside from the fact that is a masterpiece and one of the best films ever made imo, i can't help but wonder if there were any (and if there still are) drummers out there irl who watched it and were dumb enough to try imitate Andrew. Cause i remember when the film was released, soon after there were several videos on the internet of professional drummers warning people about the dangers of pushing yourself too hard till dropping dead for that very reason.

Teej

JK Simmons is masterful in this role. A well-deserved Oscar win for his performance in this.

Anissa Amalia

lil fun fact/trivia Miles Teller actually plays the drums himself and most of the drumming scenes were actually him playing besides some of the much more intense/technical ones

Finally watching this as I’m getting ready for a matinee show today… The family dinner scene is too real. I grew up in a family that wasn’t musical, so things that are/were a big deal to me wasn’t a big deal to anyone else. Even now as an adult, I still get from people, “Oh you do theatre! That’s fun!” It’s very condescending. It is fun, but it’s also very hard and it is a job. I get paid to do this. I’m under contracts. It’s an actual challenging job.

Sarah Marion

Man JK Simmons is too good of an actor cause at the 30 minute mark I would’ve stuck one of those drumsticks up his ass

I don't think it's a red flag not to know what you want to do in your first year in college. Many students are undeclared when they start, and then they figure it out after taking different classes.

Ok I love that we got so much Oscar lore in this reaction lol. Your insightfulness is super impressive. Thank you for thisssss!!

I probably wouldn’t have watched this film on my own, so thank you for reacting to this one. This movie sparked some strong reflections based on my own experience in competitive music and in the finance world. Regarding your thoughts on the ending and Fletcher's philosophy, I have a different takeaway. Having spent years in environments that demanded intense dedication. I've met a lot of people who embrace a 'suffering for your art' mentality. Based on my own experiences, I actually found the ending to be a “F#$k you” to Fletcher's approach. Andrew's refusal to let his passion be extinguished and the sheer joy he showed in that final performance to me proved Fletcher wrong. It reinforced my belief that the truly exceptional individuals, whether in music, finance, or any field, are those driven by genuine love for what they do. They're the ones who approach their craft with enthusiasm, eager to share their knowledge and inspire others.

Another ‘obsessed artist’ film I think you should watch is black swan, it’s about Natalie Portman trying to become a good enough ballerina for the show, and it won her the Oscar and it’s more of a psychological thriller also.

Shanae K.

Hey, I'm hope it not too late. If I'm not mistaken, in Australia, happy Easter 🐰

Awesome reaction as always! I've always been curious about this movie, but never got around to seeing it until now, and it was a blast! Also, I'm unsure how you or the rest of the community would feel about an anime reaction, but the show Attack on Titan is something I feel like you would love. It's a very dark and mature story without the typical anime tropes that put off a lot of people. Unironically, one of the best written stories I have ever experienced in any medium.

Multilis

I would have never watched that movie without your reaction. It was painful to watch for me but you kept me going and made it enjoyable.

Rhetorical Thrill

Wow, we came away with totally different reactions to the end of this one, I liked seeing your interpretation of it as triumphant. I myself finished the film feeling confused, horrified, and kind of sick 🤣

Ev

i absolutely LOVE this film and your reaction was phenomenal. I subscribed to your youtube channel probably a year or a bit more than that and your reactions towards films or series never disappoint but i am begging you please watch the film About Time, it is such a great movie i think you'd like it. please 😅

Ya to that...Oh, and "Mr. Holland's Opus" gives a different, less intense spin to musical education.

Raven Dark

Absolutely agree with an above commentor who suggested Mr. Holland's Opus. It's another teaching movie, but with a completely different drama vibe that I know you'd love.
