Water is difficult for Roku to learn because it's the natural opposite to fire also there's a theory that it's because it's also the element of change and Roku finds adapting to new ideas difficult. He finds comfort in tradition which is why he was reluctant to accept the crown of the Prince because it's traditionally worn by the Prince and why even though Sozin went against him and tried to take the Earth Kingdom he spared him after the duel because of their history and friendship. He treasures the past and the way things are so change is hard, hense water the opposite of his culture and beliefs and also the opposite of fire is hard for him to master at first. But eventually he gets it. Aang struggles with earthbending because earth and air are opposites. Air is free flowing and light whereas earth is stubborn and solid. Which is also reflected in Toph and Aang's personalities with Aang being free flowing and peaceful and Toph being... well tough and stubborn. It's also in their fighting styles, Aang almost exclusively uses an evasive and defensive fighting style when airbending especially at the beginning before he learns earth and fire which focus on attack whereas Toph is not hesitant to attack and stand her ground (pun intended)

With the paternity and maternity of Zuko and Azula it's like Zuko got the combination of Sozin and Roku's personalities which is why he has the internal conflict whereas Azula got both of their talents and skills which is why she's a prodigy

Great reaction as always. One thing I always appreciated about Zuko's confrontation with Ozai is that it's the first glimpse the show gives you into just how powerful Ozai really is. Ever since the introduction of lightning bending every character seen using it has always taken a few moments to basically charge their attack (yes pun intended) and then they fire the lightning from one hand. When Ozai does it, however, he very quickly and decisively blasts Zuko with not one but both of his hands. This small but massive detail indicates that Ozai is a complete master at lightning bending and is quite the force to be reckoned with. He's basically a firebending prodigy to the same degree as Azula only with decades of experience under his belt.

Been looking forward to this! I got the notification when I was getting to work 😢

KaijinGarou

Thank you for the extra episode! I'm sure you didn't regret it though 🔥

Rokku's flashback does come a little out of nowhere but he must be bored as fuck in the Spirit World so I understand 🤣

KaijinGarou

I don't think there's anything intrinsically hard about waterbending as a firebender, it all boils down to the Avatar's personality and previous experiences. Aang had issues with earthbending because he was too carefree and gentle, lacking the stubbornness to subject earth. We lack information to be sure about Rokku's problems with water but I'd assume he had trouble accepting change, for his friend and his nation, which is what waterbending is about.

KaijinGarou

Well Azula could also cleanse the sins of their family technically but she doesn't look very willing to me 🤣. Yes, it is from their mother's side. They go into more detail in the comic The Search. I don't think she is a prodigy because of that, though.

"Sokka, sneak attacks don't work if you yell it out loud". Every villain in media: "Wait what?!"

KaijinGarou

"I even bent my own sweat once" "That's very d̵i̵s̵g̵u̵s̵t̵i̵n̵g̵ resourceful, Katara"

KaijinGarou

"Pants are an illusion and so is death". That connection may seem off but I will kill him if he doesn't start wearing pants.

Kitty Underwood

Hama told Katara they pumped "dry air" where they kept them captive, so there was no water in the air

First reactor I see realize Azula had Dai Li agents with her instead of thinking she was the Avatar too haha. You're so quick, Oscar.

Also when you got to season 3 I was so excited for many many episodes/moments, and I completely forgot about the wackiness of episode 9 and now I'm excited for that too. I will have to watch it later tho since I'm at work

Episode 11 is probably my favorite in the whole show, even though almost all of the remaining ones are serious contenders. Zuko's is one of the greatest speeches in media, finally speaking out loud on our behalf. Funny, coming from the silent-type character xD. And the fact they only showed the side of his face that wasn't scarred by his father as he walked away, implying the scar had been healed symbolically by his own growth. You know this was coming because he finished growing that good-guy hair 🤣. Zuko's the best written character in anything IMO (his arc isn't even finished yet) and my favorite, as you can put together xD. Also, Aang can't redirect lightning, no, so retreating was a good call.

Aang struggled with earthbending, Roku struggled with water, and it's said in Legend of Korra (not really a spoiler) that waterbender Avatars usually struggle to learn air. Given this information, I would assume that an earthbender would also struggle to learn fire. There is something foundational about the individual nature of each element that makes it difficult to think from certain perspectives, and since bending is as much a mental discipline as a physical one it falls upon the Avatar to be that much more open-minded and patient. I especially love when Iroh points out the benefits from seeing the world and oneself through different lenses. A diversity of knowledge leads to a wisdom that can be applied to every facet of life, bending included. It should be noted that the lightning-reversal technique is derived from waterbending, which is in part why it is so difficult for normal firebenders to learn and why Aang was able to pick it up so quickly.

Almost every episode of the season 3 is a masterpiece. Not much to comment, just enjoying the reaction and show. Episode 9 calms us down after bloodbending and before invasion. What makes a great show so great is the attention to details, and here's another one - you can see that in episode 10, Zuko leaves the fire nation palace just like his mother did in the "Zuko alone" episode. His story arc is incredible.

Kitty Underwood

The stuff with Mai and Zuko, it's possible that neither of them are opening up too much about what is bothering Zuko because it would probably make both of them traitors if they did. They live in a tyrannical society, Zuko is barely back from being banished, it would be hard to be vocal about disliking it there

D2K9

First reactor I've seen actually remark on the manipulative behavior similarity between Ozai and Azula when Ozai baits Zuko into staying for his explanation. It's the one thing that alwayssss sticks out to me and I'm so glad you caught it on the first watch!!

Jenny D

I’m glad you decided to watch 6 this time, because the way the final 10 episodes play out, doing 12-16 and 17-21 is a perfect split!

One thing I realized recently is how the timeline of Zuko’s ancestors is kind of messed up. Roku and Sozin were born 182 years before this show takes place. They were born 166 years before Zuko was born. Sozin died 20 years after the comet, so 80 years before the present time. But in Zuko Alone, when Firelord Azulon (Zuko’s grandfather/Sozin’s son) died they said he only ruled for 23 years. That flashback took place 5 years before the present, so according to that episode Azulon became Firelord 28 years ago. Also, why were these people waiting so long to have heirs? Azulon was born when Sozin was 82, which is just insane for a monarch! I suppose by comparison Azulon didn’t wait that long to have Iroh (probably about 40 years) but both Roku and his daughter had to have been crazy old when they had Zuko’s grandmother and mother, respectively. Zuko’s mother was about 22 when she had Zuko, so she was born 38 years before the present time. Her mother would have had to have been born at least 12 years before the comet, cuz that’s when Roku died. And that means his wife gave birth around the age of 70! And his daughter gave birth to Ursa around the age of 62! I suspect they didn’t have the timeline fully mapped out when they were making season 1, because if they did they should’ve made Sozin Zuko’s great-great-grandfather.

Rhetorical Thrill

Somehow it's not at all shocking that the character that brought you the closest I've seen to a big swear was Azula 🤣

Morgan Li

I was really looking forward to the live action but the more news I hear about it the more disappointed I am, it really seems like they're changing the characters completely
