Some backstory to this albums is that J DIlla had a incurable blood disease during the making of this album, which he produced about 29 or so of the songs recorded in the hospital. Donuts was released on Febuary 7th, just 3 days before his death due to cardiac arrest.

Interesting fact about this album, J Dilla created most of the songs on donuts while he was battling lupus and pneumonia in the hospital, with the project ultimately being released only 3 days before his death. Some of the songs use sampling to send messages to his loved ones.

another great instrumental hiphop album is cosmogramma by flying lotus

Please react to Modal Soul by Nujabes!

RIP Jay Dee. And I told them you might be cool off this lol. Dilla is "the one" as far as creativity and influence. Kanye and Pharrell, some of my favorite producers, are children of his for example. You won't "get it" unless you know some form of music theory. There's a lot of good videos on YT about Dilla Time that can explain it better. The Donut of the Heart >> Always reminds me of young Drake...you should add Comeback Season to the list.

Gotta check out the sample breakdown on don’t cry in your free time. Shit’s crazy

Imma recommend a classic 90s album: labcabincalifornia by the pharcyde. It has some of dillas most sought after beats

You mentioned doom, I’d recommend his album Born Like This. He raps over multiple J Dilla beats including a sample from this album

If you want examples of rappers on J Dilla beats I'd usually recommend MF DOOM and Logic. This is simply one of, if not the greatest beat tape of all time. There is so much personality and context to this album and all the little things he does in each track have become addicting to me. And it was almost entirely produced with physical equipment, no FL Studio or anything close, from the confines of a hospital bed, whilst suffering from a terminal illness that would kill him three days after the album was released. Dilla one of the goats. 🙏

If you ever want to listen to a beat tape again, I think you'd really like Madlib's album Sound Ancestors. Also can't go without recommending Endtroducing by DJ Shadow, but Madlib's album might be a more instant catch for you.

@16:53, There is a song with Drake rapping over that beat off his Comeback Season mixtape. The song is called Where to Now
