Mike and Jared took a break from Iran War coverage to look back on "Lady Ballers": a feature-length film The Daily Wire released in 2023, at the height of MAGA's efforts to stoke an anti-transgender moral panic over women's sports. The guys reexamine the movie as an artifact that helped deliver the MAGA movement we see in 2026 and an example of conservatives' efforts at counter-programming against a dominant liberal culture.

We've never tried an episode like this before. Here at Posting Through It headquarters, we're curious what people will think. But we never forget the sage wisdom of Coach Rob: "Winners are just losers who win."

Jared's album recommendation: PUP, Morbid Stuff, 2019

So Lady Ballers coming out was a bit of a final blow in terms of making me finally see/admit to myself that Daily Wire was run by grifters. I started listening to Ben Shapiro in 2016, went down the Intellectual Dark Web/alt-lite rabbit hole and thankfully got myself into therapy and was able to find my way out of it. This show actually played a large part in my “self deprogramming” journey, so thank you for making it and continuing to make it. But listening to Shaprio for 7 years does give me a bit of unique insight to how they marketed the film. The 1.6 million number quoted for promoting that film? I’m guessing that doesn’t include all of the free advertising on the various hosts shows. Because leading up to the film Shapiro would run more segments about transgender news stories than even his normal 1.5x speed self. He’d even cover ones that weren’t “national” stories and then justify it by saying “see the mainstream media won’t cover this”. But this helped push the narrative that “transgender ideology” was actually the aggressor in order to make the movie feel more important than it actually was for the core audience, thus pushing them to advertise the movie via word of mouth. But they also used that tactic in the year leading up to Daily Wire Plus’s announcement. Shapiro and the other hosts would run “cultural analysis” segments that were basically low effort versions of what YouTubers like Critical Drinker do. And all of these segments pushed the message that Hollywood and everyone in it hates anyone who isn’t a “radical leftist”. This went on for over a year leading up to the Daily Wire Plus announcement. And these segments were presented as if being the hosts genuine thoughts, which conveniently all came to the same conclusion: “Hollywood hates you and someone should make an alternative. Oh look, we made an alternative!” The fact that these also could uploaded to YouTube and would show up in Critical Drinker viewers recommendations also helped increase their reach.

Conservatives like this suck at culture, where the right wing project has more capital behind it is Eric Trump clone, fellow failson and now studio mogul David Ellison owning paramount and any slop Taylor Sheridan produces in TX

Never heard of this movie before and appreciate the PTI HQ spotlight on it. So the TERF and anti-trans moral panic makers and fans of this movie have been vocal in their solidarity with WNBA players in their current contract negotiations because they genuinely care about good faith negotiations and improving work conditions in women’s sports, right?

I can’t decide if I want to laugh, cry, or vomit about how they clearly think the world works for trans women…

Also further into this, it looks like Ben and Boring just copypasta’d a more hateful transphobic version of Juwanna Mann

I've listened to several podcasts and YouTube videos go over this movie (because I hate myself, I guess), and I always appreciate what each of them notices in it. It's a shining example of why conservative cinema fails to tell good stories: our "hero" is in an egregiously absurdist world, bounces from contrived experience to contrived experience, and makes no character growth by the end. His thoughts on trans people and women remain the same throughout, and his wife is miraculously attracted to him once again. It's all so very lame.

So close to my pitch of: Hollywood Failure —> Online Conservative Ghoul pipeline. I love to see it!!!

Thought number one: so THAT's what PUP sounds like! Giving me slight The Hotelier vibes, which is my way of saying that that song hit on a visceral level and I'm about to order 'Morbid Stuff.' Thought number two: good lord, that movie sounded utterly awful on pretty much every concievable level. Thought number three: this film seems like a hell of a fall from grace for producer Dallas Sonnier, whose credits include 'Bone Tomahawk' and other films that don't play like, well, a studio head's vanity project. (During his time running the production house Cinestate, Sonnier was somewhat vague about his politics, but his subsequent move to working with the Daily Wire suggests that either he's very much on the right or simply doesn't give a shit. But that's a deep dive for another day...)

I have listened to scorpion hill 5-6 times every day since you recommended it. I'm sharing it to all my friends and time travelling back to my late twenties, which was 20 years before the release of scorpion hill. I love it so much

As a 60 year old queer feminist (more female supremacist than 3rd wave; yes I have called myself a 'womyn') I have been feeling wedged on trans issues... I am working my way through it. But this piece of art as you have described it ... well I needn't have worried it might entrench transphobia. The misogyny was very familiar tho.

They are so good. Morbid Stuff is an all-timer album for me that I revisit frequently. If you ever get a chance to catch a show, do it. The community around that band is also really wholesome and fun. They’ve great guys who have made something really cool.

The clips of this movie sound like something from the 70-80's parody movies. They really do know their audience.
