We want you to help us pick the next animal or bird to be a Humblewood race! Patrons can suggest and vote on the species for May 2026.

We want you to help us pick the next animal or bird to become a Humblewood race!

First, share what animals and birds you'd like to see in the comments below. Then we'll gather all the suggestions and make a poll for all of you to vote on. The winner of that poll will get the Humblewood treatment as May's playtest.

Some points to keep in mind:

Don't get too specific, but do give examples. Eg. "Flamingos" is too specific, but "Wading birds (for example flamingos and storks)" is helpful!

You can suggest more than one animal!

Some of your suggestions might already be in the works so those won't go forward to the poll, but you'll see them soon!

Would like to see your take on some more insectoid species, loved your Moth design so much.

Eliza V.

my vote is either snakes or arachnids!

Vojtěch Prachař

Large flightless birds like Ostriches, Emu, Moa, Terror Birds, Please

GRV 01

Flightless Birds!! From big to small -- kiwi, rhea, emu, cassowary, ostrich, Moa! We need them all!

Sybil Chapados

If I can be a tiny bit more specific, I’ve been chuckling to myself for a few months now at the idea of a fishfolk whose lineages are simply catfish (which are more diverse than most people think) and dogfish (sharks).

Darth Peregrine

I'd love to see an elephant race, modern elephants or Mammoths. I think a Quokka race would be a lot of fun. A bison race would be great as well.

Rebecca Harbison

Do we have vultures yet? (Also seconding the spiders. I may be very fond of Children of Time.)

HexCode

You know what would be neat to see? Cephalopods, like Octopuses or Squid

The Kobold Guild

Kangaroos and wallabies, youd have a strong tank version (kangaroo) and the smaller dexterous version (wallabies), Or bisons, buffalo and cows. Being able to moo at people would be hilarious whilst playing.

Brent Heigl

Monitor Lizards like Komodo Dragons, or Beetles

Gusty737

Cecteans, like Whales & Dolphins.

DKach

Maybe something for a bigger product (Humblewood 3?) but there is so much potential in aquatic species. Large migrating oceanic bird like albatross maybe as a bridge into aquatic animals?

Desmar2u

An in general marsupial. Lots of room for extra traits with the pouch! Then there is the absolute insanity of the platypus lol!

Snickity_Snack

I have a few I’d love to see! Primates (monkeys, lemurs) Prehensile tail, great climbers and dexterious, smart and mischievous Bovines (Cows, Buffalo, Bison) Imagine a third possible Cervan group that split off, like the Capran! Just every book gets its own ‘was a Cervan, but not anymore ‘ Dromaius/Casuaris - Large flightless birds (Emu, Ostrich, Cassowary) I could see Emu/Ostrich subrace being good runners and endurance, and Cassowaries being stronger/fightier, because those things will f you up!) Crustaceans (Crabs, Lobsters, Crayfish) Snip snip Big Lizards (Komodo Dragon, Moniter Lizards, even possibly Crocodiles) Love the Tilia, but they’re more little geckos and lizards, something akin to the Lizardfolk but a Humblewood version would be neat Crocodilia (Crocs, Alligators, Caimans) Hardy, tough scaled with a killer bite, plus semi aquatic! Love everything y’all have done already, keep up the phenomenal work!

People are suggesting many excellent races based on their favorite races and gaps in the Earth ecosystems that inspire Humblewood, so you really can't go wrong here. If I may throw a hat into the ring, I suggest the humble mole! You could generalize it further to Talpidae or Eutyphla (excluding hedgehogs), but I think moles are unique enough and diverse enough to warrant a race of their own. For a race to be a valuable conclusion, it should be mechanically interesting, provide novel or exciting worldbuilding/storytelling opportunities, and (for Humblewood specifically) be based on an animal for which people already hold some degree of affection. I believe moles satisfy all these criteria. Humblewood has explored a few movement options so far, but only the Hedge has a burrowing speed, and it's not a big part of their identity. I think moles would do a great job of filling the niche of using a burrow speed in combat. It's a unique part of battlefield navigation that introduces new elements and obstacles for enemies and the party alike, but, unlike aerial combat, they are forced to surface to attack, meaning melee-based characters are not inherently at a disadvantage. Their claws can be powerful natural weapons (not a unique trait among Humblefolk), but also have an additional thumb, which could provide additional grip strength or manual dexterity in an anthropomorphized version. A specific species that would make for a good subrace is the star-nosed mole, which has mysterious tentacles on its snout! They likely evolved it to better detect and consume their small, fast-moving prey, but some scientists think they can also use it to detect seismic waves. As far as I know, this could give us the first Humblefolk with the rare Tremorsense ability, which would be pretty neat. Moles also provide a tremendous opportunity for worldbuilding and storytelling. Though usually solitary on earth, mole society in Humblewood could be a vast subterranean network with sprawling burrows that weave through the roots of Alderheart. Many of the smaller Humblefolk could also make their homes here, though unless you make a burrowing owl Strig subrace there may be few Birdfolk. This opens up a ton of worldbuilding opportunity without even needing to expand the longitudinal/latitudinal confines of the map as it is just layers below. Unknown and untold threats may exist beneath the forest floor, is the party brave enough to venture into and beyond the realm of the moles? Last, moles can be adorable creatures. Though not as beloved as some of the other, more traditionally cute animals of the temperate forest, they have a funky, endearing quality to them that makes them a darling of people who like the odd and imperfect. Tiny, beady eyes and massive claws on a rotund body, they are peculiar in appearance, but this is exactly the strangeness that appeals to the 'Goblincore' aesthetic. Humblewood has done a wonderful job of creating races that are adorable, majestic, fierce, refined, beautiful, and wise, but I'd love to have another race that satisfies the affection for a 'weird little guy'. Thanks for reading my wall of text! I hope you'll consider moles in your future projects. I think they're pretty neat. :)

Small World, Southern Girl

I second Primates, Bovines, and Crocodilia! And would like to add some suggestions on how to put the info into like DND beyond for new DMs

Hedge

I'm still hoping for woodland critters like rabbits and squirrels. I like the idea of flightless birds, though!

Brody Bevans

I would love to see different bat species like vampire, brown, and fruit bats! You get the humble and birdfolk aspect and get a species stuck in between and not fitting in with either and being seen as an outcast in both societies! Could make for a cool societal aspect!!

GRV 01

Yes! This

Wizardpower700

Id love to see a bee race perhaps there stinger could be a weapon that’s strong but damages them,

Pterocards

Spiders! Orb Weaver, Jumpers, Gnat Ogres, Tarantula....the possibilities are endless! Or maybe another aquatic ancestry? The first fish people? Guppyfolk?

Daniel Hall

I say take it back to basics, get some more animas that would’ve lived in a woodland, forest setting. As a California native, I must say I am partial to more species that are in my area case I’ve always wanted to run a campaign in a California type setting. Squirrels Chipmunks Newts Lizards (not geckos, more general) I know Raptors are lumped into that race, but potentially more options to create medium/large birds of prey I think there needs to be at least one other bird race that supports lots of the passerine type birds you’d find in temperate forest, ie warblers, wrens, sparrows, finches, thrushes, flycatchers etc. Wading birds, flightless birds, MORE BIRDS

Visku_Vinyl

Beavers, perhaps? Skilled aquatic crafters and builders living in semi-submerged towns that prevent flash floods and act as aqueducts.

Kyle Hutchings

Would be excellent for civil engineers or ship's carpenters.

Craytoll

Flightless Birds. e.g. Kiwi, Takahe, Kakapo, Weka, Ostrich, Emu, Cassowary, Moa etc.

Kuponut

Marsupials would be fun. Gotta populate Dustbloom with someone :)

GRV 01

Yes!

Charles Hommen

The alligator and crocodile species group would be cool. Or possibly something of the elephant and mammoth family.

Neight Gallenbeck

colony insects (ants & termites) hyena family could be fun to

Jeff Peters

How about primates like gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutangs, howlers. I think they would be native to the Tanglewilds.

Allan Eddem

With the last playtest, Big lizards (monitor, komodo, or crocodilian) will link. Marsupial, with a distinction between terrestrial and arboreal ones, could be interesting for Dustbloom, if it lean to the Australian kind of environment.

Lilgreyshark

I would love official races/subraces for Squirrels and rabbits. I going niche here but I would personally love to see a Goby/wolfish/mudskipper race.

DaLegend395

- Songbirds - Vultures (Condors, Bearded Vultures, etc)

Spiritwolfen Arts

- Wild Sheep or goats - Eels, Rays and Skates - Snakes

Butt Face

Rabbits and squirrels! Maybe even sugar gliders too.

Blair

Seconded: rabbits and squirrels please!
