Hey patrons!

Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to create and develop the Big Bads series! With your support, over a span of 2 years, we’ve been able to unleash some truly bad baddies and grow from the humble touch-starved Daniel to a brood of over 25 Big Bads and counting.

As we look towards the future of the series, we’ve decided a restructure of our Patreon tier offerings was important to make sure we focus on building bigger and better Big Bads.

What’s Changing?

PDF Tier Pricing

Starting in January 2022, the PDF tier will increase to $5 a month for new patrons. When we originally started the Patreon with reference cards the cost was in line with the content we were creating, but now that we’re focusing on the Big Bad series, we’ve decided an adjustment was in order to account for the additional content.

Patrons in the PDF tier at the time of the restructure will be grandfathered in and stay at the $2 price until they switch tiers or cancel their pledge. Please see more details on grandfathered tiers below!

Retiring Reference Cards and Physical Silver Tier

Starting January 2022, because of the rising production and shipping costs associated with the physical cards, we will no longer be printing or shipping them for any tiers. Reference cards will still be distributed through the Monthly Print n’ Play PDFs, but we will no longer be offering them as physical cards. The Big Bad promoted in December will be the last one to have physical reference cards.

Though we won’t be sending them out physically anymore, we’ll still be creating new monsters and magic items for you to use and enjoy!

Votes

Because we’ll be focusing less on the reference cards once these changes take effect, we will be pausing votes as we transition in the new year. We love getting your input on rewards and we’d like to review what that might look like going forwards!

Rest assured we will still be creating new monsters and magic items to send your way as digital rewards!

Retiring Signature Tier

By retiring the Signature tier, we will be better able to focus on developing the most important parts of the Big Bad project. Though the Signature tier will be retired, those in the tier at the time of the restructure will be grandfathered in. Please read below for more information!

Greater focus on Digital

To offset these changes we are working on more digital rewards that are sure to please, from assets for your favorite virtual tabletop to STLs of the latest Big Bads! We’re aiming to use this to improve what Big Bads can offer long term. We’re still going to be doing monster and magic items and they will be included as a part of the printed booklet and as a pdf for all other tiers!

Why are you making these changes?

There are a few reasons we’ve made this decision. One of the main reasons is that the purpose of this Patreon has evolved over time--after over 300 reference cards created and distributed, we’ve steadily moved towards the Big Bad series as the focus of this project. Another pretty big factor (see what we did there 👀) is it takes a lot to create the Big Bads--time, resources, printers, cutting and rounding machines, and repairs--and these revisions will allow us to keep creating quality content that you know and love.

Additional factors have also impacted our production and shipping processes. Between the rising cost of paper, production, and increasing shipping costs, we unfortunately end up in the red with every release.

Ultimately, we want our tier offerings to keep our patrons at the forefront as we develop new content for the Big Bad series that we can sustain long term.

How does this affect the current tiers?

Grandfathered Tiers

We will no longer be offering the tiers as they currently exist to new patrons and all tiers will undergo some changes (detailed in the chart below!). Patrons who are in the Bronze or Signature tiers by the end of 2021 will be grandfathered into the new tier structure.

This means that we will honor the Bronze or Signature reward tiers and price until you either switch tiers or cancel. If you are in those tiers, no action is required on your part to be grandfathered in! If you would like to be in either of those tiers beyond 2021, please be sure to sign up before the end of the year. They will no longer be available to sign up for or switch to in 2022!

Please be aware that the following changes will apply to the Signature tier: the booklet stamp will be printed on the page rather than hand stamped, and no physical reference cards will be shipped.

2022 Pledge Tiers

Here is the new tier breakdown for 2022:

$5 - Print n’ Play

This tier will replace the current $2 tier and rewards include the Monthly Print n’ Play PDF. If you’re currently at that tier, no action is required! You will remain at the $2 price until you switch or cancel your tier. New patrons or those who switch this tier in 2022 will no longer have access to the $2 grandfathered tier.

$10 - Digital Deluxe

Replacing the reference cards tier, patrons will receive the Monthly Print n’ Play PDFs as well as VTT assets designed for use with Foundry and a new STL file every month! The assets will be formatted to be used with most Virtual Tabletop platforms and with the STL files you can 3D print your very own Big Bad minis.

$15 - Physical

With this tier, you’ll receive the Monthly Print n’ Play PDF and a physical Big Bad Booklet!

Tier Changes

When will these changes take place?

These changes will take place on January 1st, 2022. If you want to be grandfathered in one of our other tiers, be sure to select your preferred tier before then!

Cheers,

The Hit Point Press Team

Will we still physically rewards (including the cards) for pervious issues that have yet to be sent? I'm at the Signature Tier but I haven't received any physically rewards since the June issue.

Artemisthemp

So Signatur will still receive physical booklets?

lilpaox

I really hope you don't cut back on the reference cards. I have little interest in the big bads stuff and only subscribe for the reference cards. I will very much miss voting on the cards.

Rhinorulz

I am also still waiting on months old physicals.

Catching up on my "crushed under work" disappearance. That said: Believe it or not... uh ... but the biggest appeal here were the cards because getting animated spell cards and everything like that was literally how i came to know this place. 😅 While i do like the "big bad" series (they are a nice read) that was... uhm... the "next to no appeal" part of the deal. Mostly because they are impossible to fit in any campaign, you literally have to design something from the ground up to fit them in there and most of my stuff is grown organically from the actions of the players. Items and such are an easy fit and great stuff to give players. A big bad .... needs to basically have the whole story woven around it. And that's where the whole thing loses interest for me. You can't really expect players to follow a path, heck i have come to *barely expect* players to follow their own backstory written by their own hands. Time and time again i have tried to introduce new stuff and players just ignore it even when the whole plan from the beginning was: "This is what we are going to be doing" Items and similar things are easy to fit and don't break my heart if they are discarded. But if i try and build up to a big bad and... yeah no, it never works. The only way it ever worked is to let players do their thing and if they decide to antagonize somebody they will. There is a good chance when i try and introduce a villain players will try and cuddle the villain and turn it into an hero or something, and whenever i try and introduce a friendly face ... yeah ... there's a lot of "who are you?! what do you want?! what are you hiding?! You're trying to deceive us! Stop that friendly face we know you are trying to do something bad!" it's a crapshoot really. It's also why i mostly ignore most of the stuff from premade adventures. They... never work at best. Premade adventures assume people will totally like this person or totally see this other person is a villain or totally go and explore this place or that they will totally try and fight here while they will totally try and not fight in this other place here. And it's never like that. What i get is "here is this adventure. Oh, you want to buy things, yes let me introduce bob the goblin vendor at the goblin market. Now let's go back to ... no... Bob was there just because i needed somebody to sell you wares. The adventure is over there. Why are you questioning bob for the difficulties of his work? Why do you want to go to the feywilds to talk to the high manager of Bob? the adventure is over there what are you trying to do here in this completely uncharted place?!" So... uh... do you remember "Daniel"? Yyyeah... that... that never went as it was supposed. They decided it was "too cute" and basically the whole adventure became a "Young Frankenstein" wannabe where the players were convinced it was fun and nice to make Daniel into a happy "boy". Want to know what happened to Carrus and Verreaux? Yeah... only Verreaux was seen as an actual enemy. Fact is. Yes. They are nice NPCs, but at best you are just making me work *a lot more* by trying to fit them in an existing adventure and then i have to basically fit them as "discardable NPCs" where they could be ignored (like fulmini, the last one i tried), where it's a lot of work that is lost to deaf ears because they do not care about the "vampirate" they liked "Sqid the wereoctopus" which was supposed to lead them to "the vampirate" and went on to forge a friendship with the werespider to oppose the wereoctopus which they built into a monumental villain. In the span of 3 session (12 hours). Then it was over and i had to go back to the original storyline because they were never interested in anything else. And yeah i stopped following you when i saw you were sending me those big bads i knew would not be able to use and returned a while later. when the animated spell cards i still loved were already gone Sooooo... eh... • Last year you stopped making the animated spell cards which was exactly the reason i started following you. • You went away from the nice and appealing monster sketches and went into high spending but also totally nondescript images i see today which i can find in any book and don't say anymore "this is us" but "this is corporate". It does not look "fun" anymore, it looks professional, which... yeah. If i wanted "professional" i would have gone and bought the cards from the D&D set. WotC still sells those. • and now you want to delve into... uh... yeah, the least interesting bit of your entire array of production and remove the cards entirely. I mean... yes i want to support you. But at this point you are trying super hard to make me want to leave.

I’m a bit late to reply to this but I just want to post to say thank you for all you do. I love putting the big bads into my campaigns as fun monsters for my players to run into along the journey of the main overarching story I have going. I’m using tendon and bone soon in one campaign and I was able to build up a really creepy surrounding for them while also tying directly into the campaign’s overall story, so that is a lot of fun. The vampirate stuff is a perfect fit for my ocean world campaign, along with a few of the other monsters yall have made. I love the artwork and the stories and work you all put into them to make them feel real. It saves me a lot of work overall which is great because combat isn’t always my strong suit. I have players who wander a lot and don’t always follow the story in a linear way, which is fine! I have the world built in a way that makes it easy to rearrange encounters and shift to put various things in their pathways. It makes the big bad line you all put out super handy for me, and it was the main draw to this patreon for me. I LOVE every single one, and I always look forward to finding ways to integrate them into my games. Sometimes that involves changing some things but the heart of it is always there. The cards are an additional super handy thing I can send my players over discord if they find or buy those items, which again simplifies a lot of the work for me, and the artwork on them is always so so nice. Overall: thanks so much for the work you do and I look forward to continuing to support every bit of it!!

I agree with Simone, The cards were the main draw for me. As i can hand them out at a table. They looked nice, much better something i printed at home. I personally feel like a five dollar add on to get cards would be fine. I understand the cost of things is high right now, If that's the issues then charge more. While the vtt and stl are nice, the are mostly useless if you don't run the big bad. Its also very odd to me that you push digital with the vtt and pdfs, but then want use to 3d print stl. it sounds like you don't understand what your audience wants.

Andrew Surprise

Well that's unfortunate. I joined up at the wrong time. Physical cards is what I was most looking forward to.

Book Witch Taty

Oh gosh, a little heart broken. I just got my January and February rewards (I think) and was surprised to see that the reference cards are gone (I didn't see this message earlier so I only found out now). I really like the reference cards since they are compact and easy to switch up depending on your needs for your game. That being said the VTT and STLs is a cool new touch/replacement, I don't have a 3D printer yet but I have been accumulating STLs from different projects for when I eventually do get one. I'm glad we're still getting the reference cards in PDF format but admittedly they aren't as useful that way as they are physical. if only I could figure out a way to print actual playing card quality cards at home. As sad as I am about the changes, thanks for keeping up with the big bad booklets and adding the extra digital goodies to our tier. (ALSO thank you so much for messaging these, I dont collect my monthly rewards each month, I usually wait a few months and then download them all at once so having them still available months later makes that really convenient)
