This just might be my favorite story arc of S5. I've been waiting to see if this character would pop up. Now I can't wait to see if he pops up in 2003 and Rise.

Enjoy!

Honestly I wonder how Splinter or Shredder would pair against Jay. Also I wish we got a bit more info about Jays past, like what was his original body and how did he get his powers.

The story of Miyamoto Usagi is a fascinating one. Usagi was the main character of the Indie comic series, Usagi Yojimbo (Rabbit Bodyguard) created by Stan Sakai, a Japanese-born American cartoonist. The series began in 1984, the same year that the first issue of TMNT was released. And although I don't know the exact circumstances, Sakai became good friends with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. So much so, that several crossover stories between the two series were published throughout the 80s and 90s. Usually involving Leonardo being teleported to Usagi's world via magic to help him with a specific adventure. Since then, it's been something of a tradition for Usagi to be featured in TMNT media. In the 87 cartoon, the 2003 cartoon, the 2012 cartoon, he probably would've appeared in Rise if it had gotten a third season. The friendship between Leonardo and Usagi is sort of an homage to the friendship between the creators of the two series. Fun Fact, Sakai actually wrote these three episodes.

Oh wow. That's cool. So, he does have his own story out there? I might have to check it out sometime. I look forward to seeing him in the 2003 series when we get to it. Even cooler is that Sakai wrote these episodes. Thanks for sharing this, dude.

I looked it up and as of 2025, there are 40 collected volumes, or 'Books', of Usagi Yojimbo, all of which are available on Amazon.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to head to amazon and give it a look. Probably add it to my wish list.
