Batman gets a taste of having powers... as expected, leaning on them too much starts messing with what makes him Batman in the first place.

This was a fun one from start to finish!

Kanjar Ro*, he’s a space pirate. Matches Malone is the undercover alias that Bruce takes in the comics when he’s undercover in the criminal underworld, or just trying to gather info on the streets. He uses the Matches identity a number of times throughout BTAS. Zur-En-Arrh is indeed a planet within our own universe (Earth 1). Batman was simply taken into a wormhole that transported him light years away. What Batman was saying is that, given the unfathomable size of our universe as a celestial body, it is statistically probable that another being somewhere else in the universe would also come up with the identity of Batman (obviously not 1:1), ergo the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh (who, indeed, is a sort of mishmash of Batman and Superman, along with his backstory and planet.). In the comics, after the Silver Age story that this episode was based on where Bruce meets the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, Bruce was inspired to create a backup personality deep within his own mind based upon ZEA Batman. This personality is much more primal and unrestrained and would come out as a trigger response to a major psychological attack which might overpower Bruce’s own psyche. TL;DR ZEA Batman is his own alien entity within our own universe that Bruce meets and inspires Bruce to do something wacky nonsense, depending on the canon. His arch nemesis is Xel Rohtul, who is kind of Lex Luthor’s first appearance in this show, but not really lol. This is the first and only time that “Lex” will be voiced by Klancy Brown, the infamous Lex Luthor of the DCAU. Our Lex is much more akin to the Lex of even the Golden Age.

Thats his name. I remember not being overly impressed with him. Guess thats why I forgot his name. XD Definitely an interesting concept. It was throwing me off because I assumed a few things. How did he create a backup in his own mind? Did he use tech? Thats wild.

The answer to that question is yes and no lol. In the 68 years since 1958 (when Batman ZEA originally appeared), the backup personality of the same name has been rewritten and given new origins again and again, as is the nature of comics. Originally it seems like Bruce did heavy meditation and induced multiple mental breakdowns on himself to create the personality, then tech started being used, other times it was secret societies doing it against Bruce’s will and he just learned how to use it for himself, etc. The cool part about ZEA personality is that it essentially compartmentalizes anything in Bruce’s mind that can be psychologically targeted and immediately shuts down everything. It’s Batman without Bruce Wayne, meaning no moral, ethics, love, fear, etc. Nothing that can be mentally warped, just the mission, and any way to achieve the mission. Of course, this isn’t inherently good, in fact it often leads to bad things, but it’s a neat concept if still far out. I don’t think the Batman of ZEA would approve though lol.

Superman and Wonder Woman do exist in this universe; they've been alluded to a few times in the past. But at the time, Warner Bros had a mandate from DC stating that the big three, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, couldn't be in a cartoon unless they were main characters. So, Superman and Wonder Woman weren't allowed to be guest stars in a Batman cartoon. Fortunately, this mandate was thrown out by the time Season 3 went into production, so you'll see them there. But at the time, this episode was the creators' way of doing a Superman type story in Brave and the Bold without breaking the rules.

Can't wait to see them in S3! Staples of the DC universe!

Wild stuff for sure, but like you said... COMICS! XD

Season 3 of Brave and the Bold is a lot like Season 2 of Freakazoid. And by that, I mean it was obvious in both cases that the creative teams knew with 100% certainty that they weren't getting renewed for another season. So rather than struggle in vain to boost their ratings and get renewed, they just said "Screw it! Forget about trying to appeal to the 'target demographic' let's make this last season for us. Let's get as weird as the WB will allow and go out on our own terms." And in both cases, the end result was awesome.
