I'm digging the totally different vibe this Kamen Rider series has compared to even Build and W from the same era. It almost feels like there was some kind of tone shift during the Heisei era because the presentation and overall atmosphere feel completely different from the other Rider series I've watched so far. Again, I dig it!

Agito was the 2nd Heisei series, while W was the 11th, so roughly 9 years. Unidentified lifeforms are what the police called the monsters in Kuuga, so the police have prepared for more of them by creating the G3, which looks vaguely like Kuuga. This is also why he struggles in this battle. He's been preparing to join the wrong season.

I am guessing this is the surprise you mentioned. I had 4 guesses as to what the surprise was 1=do another Kamen rider season (I was thinking Decade) 2=do another Super Sentai season (I was thinking Gozyuger) 3=something not related to Sentai or riders 4=something connected to Kamen Rider W I wasn't expecting this, but I guess I could give it a try like I did with Shinkenger

Good catch in regards to the tone and production shift. The actual tonal inflection point of Kamen Rider is Kamen Rider Den O. Pre-Den-O Kamen Rider was closer to a Japanese or Korean Drama. A lot slower paced. More melodramatic. Ensamble cast. A lot more grounded. They tend to slow burn. And as you said, a lot more grounded. The series was also more serial compared to the episodic formula picked up starting with Den O.

After Den-O (Den O was the first KR year to beat Super Sentai in the ratings), Kamen Rider decided to shift to 50% JDrama 50% Shonen Anime with a lot faster pace. They also became less serial and more episodic, adopting a 2-episode arc formula. That's more W or Build (though Build is more serial because the series went serial again after Gaim). Post Den O is a lot faster and over the top. So far, Reiwa hasn't had a distinct identity yet as it's still following the trends post Den O and Post Gaim.

G3 is a Kamen Rider so you've met two Kamen Riders so far - Kamen Rider Agito and Kamen Rider G3 Also for the shows you've watched Agito is easily the oldest 9 years before Shinkenger and W. 2001 - Kamen Rider Agito 2009 - Shinkenger and Kamen Rider W 2013 - Kyoryuger 2017 - Kamen Rider Build 2022 - Kamen Rider Geats 2023 - King-Ohger 2024 - Kamen Rider Gavv 2025 - Gozyuger 2026 - Kamen Rider Zeztz
