It’s time for BTAS #4 and both episodes were great for completely different reasons. The Last Laugh was pure chaos and absolutely fitting for Joker , while P.O.V. felt much more grounded and gave us some really cool moments of Batman working alongside the police, which I really enjoyed. Give Montoya a Batsuit!

They said LENGTHY exposure to the gas would lead to permanent insanity, not any exposure. So they have to stay in the case for probably an hour or two. I do believe this is the first every appearance of Joker gas, created to not have to show Joker killing people. In some ways, this is worse.

I think ‘The Last Laugh’ is the perfect example of how you can have a five star episode that’s nothing but wacky Joker fun, even without having some sort of gimmick, like ‘Christmas with the Joker’ (though I suppose it was April Fool’s Day, if you count that). The music for the episode is so distinct and loud, in a good way. If you were to ask me which soundtracks belong to which episode, this is the one I could point out right away. Thankfully the gas that Joker used here seemed to be minor and temporary, likely due to anything else being too expensive and long term to make, given that he’s only had at maximum three months out of Arkham since Christmas. He DOES have an extremely lethal gas variant that he uses scarily often in the series, though, and it takes very long to fix someone who is afflicted, if they’re able to be saved at all. RIP Captain Clown. ✊🏻😔 My objective grading of ‘POV’ as an episode aside, I still think it’s a great episode to watch on the more serious side of things. Officer Montoya is an excellent original character who would go on to become a mainstay, much like Harley Quinn, and she acts perfectly as a foil to the brash and stubborn Detective Bullock, as we see in this episode. Commissioner Gordon aside, we see Batman’s relationship with these few individual officers improve ever so slightly at the end of the episode, with even Bullock being reluctantly thankful.

This is also likely a weaker version, given we will often see him use a strain of gas that is exceptionally lethal and fast acting.

In the original draft of POV, that douche bag Internal Affairs guy was going to be revealed as the leader of the drug ring, but as stated before, the censors wouldn't allow an on-screen member of the police department to be depicted as corrupt, so they just made the leader some rando. Still, POV is a fine episode.

I honestly think it’s better that the internal affairs guy was straight edged and taking his job seriously, ngl. Realistically, Gordon shouldn’t have even been in the room to begin with, given that he could (and did) interfere and show bias. Even at the end, the investigation isn’t just over like that, but Gordon assaults the man and then steals the badges back, returning them unauthorized, which is illegal. If anything I think this episode, or at least the bits with Gordon, kinda highlight why I like him as a nuanced character. When you really get down to it, Gordon would be a terrible cop in any other city, let alone the COMMISSIONER, but because this is Gotham City and normal rules and laws can’t always be relied on, Gordon is more than willing to bend the rules and get dirty with others if it means serving the greater good, which he did here. This then trickles down to his own officers.

Well said. :)

Almost seems like Gotham PD is a bit corrupt even if they can't explicitly state it. Well, maybe not corrupt but.. not by the books.

I missed that detail. Ty. Yeah... being in a permanent laughing state and being aware at the same time sounds terrifying.

Captain Clown was a real one. Only REAL loyal clown to Joker. :)
