Quick heads-up on what’s coming next! This upcoming story is a two-part arc, but it's been split it up to keep everything in strict chronological order. I know this might not be everyone’s preferred way to watch, but I’m really curious to see how the pacing "feels" this way. Don't worry, though... we’re still covering every single episode either way! I guess we will be seeing Two-Face after sometime and I can't wait to see how this changes things for Bruce!

Drop your thoughts below and enjoy the ride!

The writing in this episode is phenomenal, the peak of the series imo. The scenery and atmospheric changes when Big Bad Harv takes control, Bruce non-hesitation and insistence to help his friend, the introduction of the greaseball Rupert Thorne, and that oh so frightening blink and you miss it flash of the second face in the therapist’s office. Also, major props to Richard Moll for giving the performance of a lifetime as Two-Face in this universe. Switching between the gravely smooth voice of Harvey and the gravely voice of Big Bad Harv is extremely straining and yet Moll gave it his all. This show truly reinvented the character of Two-Face into the complex, multi-dimensional character that we know today, and Moll brought him to life. I should make this clear so that there’s no confusion. After the accident, after the birth of Two-Face, both Harvey and Big Bad Harv are essentially “dead”, in the metaphorical sense. Big Bad Harv is NOT Two-Face. Two-Face is a third, new personality who basically combines the worst of the two and has complete control from then on. This is not the man that Bruce once knew. Writer of this episode, Kevin Altieri, was famous for making changes to scripts he directed, but has gone on record saying that he hardly touched this one; “There were embellishments I gave to it, like adding the rainstorms to the staging of the psychiatrist's office.; it was better than anything the comics had ever done on that character [...] that script didn't need to be changed very much."

The British YouTuber Serum Lake, who does weekly video essays on characters from various DC Comics media, recently released a book on Amazon called "Rogues Gallery", which is essentially a collection of essays that dissect the personalities and psychologies of the villains of Batman the Animated series. My only concern is that these essays contain lots of spoilers. As KrakenKing already pointed out, Two-Face is neither Harvey nor Big Bad Harv, but someone entirely new. In Thorne's office, when faced with the pressure and seeing no other way out, Harvey willingly surrendered to Big Bad Harv and let him take complete control. Big Bad Harv had little depth to him, he was essentially just a violent angry child, so when he was faced with his horrible disfigurements his mind shattered. Two-Face is essentially a survival mechanism, something that his mind created to shoulder the weight of this horrifying new reality. Little history lesson on Rupert Thorne. He was introduced into the comics in the late 70s, after the Silver Age ended and comics were allowed to tell more serious stories again. Originally, he was a corrupt politician, but as I've said before such things weren't allowed in this series, so they opted to make him a straight up gangster. Aside from that, this version is fairly faithful to the comic book original. And trust me, you'll be seeing a lot of him.

So true dude. Easily one of the best episodes I've watched of BTAS so far. From the writing to the presentation, it was on point. Gotcha on the third personality. Basically it was developed to cope with the accident and it's so strong it essentially snuffed out the other two. Wild stuff. Sounds like high praise from Kevin Altieri. Nice and deserved.

I look forward to seeing more of him. I like that the "worst of the worst" are normal gangsters. Would I be able to watch those Serum Lake videos after I finish BTAS?

KrakenKing

Yes. He has many videos focusing on both characters in general and on specific episodes, but he tends to pull info from all across the show, so it’s important to steer clear from them until after.
