Here’s some context to that bar “40 acres and a mule” before Not Like Us: "40 acres and a mule" refers to a promise made in the United States during the Civil War to provide land and a mule to formerly enslaved African Americans as a form of reparations. This promise was part of General William Tecumseh Sherman's Special Field Orders No. 15, issued on January 16, 1865, which allocated 400,000 acres of confiscated Confederate land to freed families in 40-acre plots. The mule was to assist in farming the land. However, after President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, his successor, Andrew Johnson, reversed the policy, and most of the land was returned to its former white owners. As a result, the promise of "40 acres and a mule" was largely unfulfilled, and it has since become a symbol of broken promises and the failure to provide economic justice to African Americans following the abolition of slavery.

It’s the exclusivity for me 😍🥰 It was 100/10, very strategic, very calculated per usual! I love the PlayStation controller, I loved Sam Jackson as “Uncle Sam”, Serena, Sza it was just pure 👩🏾‍🍳 🤌🏾 Oh and the symbolism, the flag just INCREDIBLE!!!!

Naya Ndjeutcha

why i can't see the to pimp a butterfly reaction?

bby.bluesi

As someone who is a Kendrick fan, I obviously loved it. I didn’t care 100% about the SZA part, ngl, but!! It was all dope. The story telling is the best p a r t! I feel like a lot of ppl expected Kendrick to be a different artist due to the success of NLU, but following the theme of the story, he is letting it be known that he is not conforming.

Kiana Taylor

I agree with Trey. It was a good performance, but I do wish he would’ve done some of his classic songs too because the Super Bowl audience is really not his core audience so it seemed like the performance was a little dry but overall it was good.

aurora martinez

i hope yall listen to untitled unmastered

bby.bluesi

I get that it was desired for Kendrick to play more songs the GP knew, but that’s the point of the story being told. Conformity. The great American game is the game of how America wants blacks to be. They want us to confirm: don’t be too loud, to reckless, to ghetto but be nice, soft, easy, appealing appreciative. B u t, it’s okay from them to take, take, take. When Kendrick started play song that everyone knew, that wasn’t thought provoking, he was playing the game right. But when he’s playing songs that’s true to him and his audience, America isn’t happy. It reminds me of something W.E.B Du Bois said (I’m paraphrasing) The soul of white folk is content and happy when blacks are appreciative and compliant. It’s all peace and love. But the second black folks show their rage and unwillingness to be complacent. Then it’s death to niggas.

Richalyn Miller

At the pre-Super Bowl press conference, they asked him how did he go about the process of selecting songs for this and he explicitly said he was focused on the present and his current state. I think to say he only did Drake disses diminishes Kendrick’s music when in reality Euphoria and Not Like Us are the only confirmed diss tracks from the beef. I think while GNX has songs that include him taking shots at Drake and also other artists/the industry, I don’t look at that as a Drake diss album and since Kendrick performed several songs from there, it was an opportunity for him to showcase the new project. The question Trey asks about why not do the classics was one of Kendrick’s points he wanted to make. America is appeased by the mainstream, the things that are popular but Kendrick is not that kind of artist. When he performed as a part of the halftime show with Dre/Snoop, he did a couple of songs that were more popular (including Alright). In the political climate we’re in and the current administration, Kendrick is the exact kind of artist to use the world’s largest platform to send a message. I think that especially since yall have reacted to To Pimp A Butterfly, you have to look at this performance from that perspective. There’s a lot of conversation online about the imagery which I think might give y’all other things to consider. Also, when y’all potentially start watching his previous performances, this performance would just fall in line with those

Isn’t All the Stars from the Black Panther Soundtrack?

John Stockton played basketball with Karl Malone...Karl Malone had a baby with a 13 year old MINOR

A lot of the songs, commentary and visuals can double for usa/trump. At least thats how i see it. Giving whats going on right now, the attendance (the president), being black history month kdot thought to himself i wont give much of myself to these people, no classics, im saving that for the tour. This performance was symbolic in many ways. Im sure he was meticulous with the song choices especially bc of that. At least thats how i took it. Like rapping humble when the dancers are lined up as the american flag- is he telling trump/usa to be humble? Or that the dancers being black this country was built on their backs? Theres a lot going on and to be unpacked. Everything has meaning

Keona Jones

We love a good peaceful protest! It was time. Sorry this wasn't for your entertainment (makes you feel good). Doing all of this in front of 45, 47 was a chefs kiss. This wasn't about Drake this time!

George Jr.

Kendrick did say « headshots for the year. You better walk around like Daft Punk » that’s why it’s better to let some ppl alone.

Taylor Jonae’

Trey looking so defeated sorry my brother. 🤣

Sierra Wilturner

youre on the right track with the underlying theme of the performance but dot even said himself the performance really wasnt about the beef. the "game" represents america. yall r correct about the uncle sam reference but theres even a deeper meaning with that. if you think about characters Samuel L has played before (uncle ruckus - boondocks, stephen - django unchained) he was the perfect person to portray what we as black people call "coons" aka people who abide by the rules of white supremacy in order to assimilate to standards of white people in this country aka Uncle Sam. genius casting 1. which is why the way the show opens uncle sam isnt satisfied claiming its too "ghetto" then dot goes on to perform Humble (be humble sit down). they love to tell us to do that. we all know who "they" is. then once he performs more hype songs again Uncle Sam then says to "deduct one life" signifying when black people "act out of line" in this country or dont assimilate we usually end up killed (racial profiling, police brutality etc.), in turn to protect ourselves we end up conforming to avoid those circumstances (this is what szas part is showing) were only celebrated when white people can digest it. but we realize that in conforming we dont truly get to live in our authentic "blackness". Drake falls into play because he is also in a way perpetrated to system by cosplaying black sometimes and using the culture as an accessory and not and authentic way of life. which aside from the pedo allegations the song also adresses. Dot then mentions the 40 acres and a mule to remind the audience that we ultimately cannot trust the government and like how they lied about that (giving us 40 acres and a mule) they can lie about ANYTHING. and we should just support eachother at the end of the day in this "game" aka the "united" states of amerikkka! sorry i yapped lol

Sierra Wilturner

i was waiting on backseat freestyle tho hehee

Dominique Brooks

Favorite part was the beginning, middle, and the smile at the end😌

Kiesha Smartt

He said he's living in the present. He did GKMC and TPAB songs with the Dre Superbowl.

bridgette

I’m glad he didn’t do all of his classics. He just did the Pop Out which was like a survey of his whole catalogue. He isn’t the first or only to focus on his newer stuff for a half time performance. Beyoncé literally did Formation at the Super Bowl the day after the song dropped and her Christmas Half time was only Cowboy Carter. GNX is his newest record and now millions of people are going to run those numbers up. He didn’t need the classics.

jj 💜

beyonce and kendrick were on the same wave but with very different performances. grammy winning king and queen!! 💖 Beyonce did only Cowboy Carter for her recent christmas show, which made yt people mad, and this has similar vibes where the music helped enhance the overall theme of white fragility. + not like us was huge so he was going to do it & he’s going on tour so makes sense to do GNX imo

Nina Ruffin

He performed maad city and alright at the superbowl in 2022 so he probably was focused on the more recent songs

MAX

I can see how historically Super Bowl performances are always a nostalgic moment, but not when you have songs currently in the Top 40 and trending. To me, "The Pop Out" was for the 'memory lane', but this was for the 'now'. It was a risk, but it paid off..."Squabble Up", "Luther", "TV Off" and "Peekaboo" were all in the Top 10 on iTunes downloads today (with "Not Like Us" being #1 of course) and "Humble", "DNA" & "Euphoria" followed those.

Squiddy

The a could also be for Aubrey

Tanesha S

I don’t think it was too much about Drake. I think Drake seemed like the focal point, but all of this can be applied to AMERICA and its disapproval of k dot and the community that he’s trying to move forward.

D Jones

Loved the reaction fellas. As far as the set list goes, somebody mentioned that he owns the masters for everything on GNX. So that might’ve been part of the reason he leaned into so many of those songs, forward looking instead of your typical “legacy act” and boost the catalog that you own on the biggest stage. He also did Alright and Madd City at the last SB, he was at so might’ve been why he left those off. Regardless… we waiting for that DAMN reaction 😎

Karlihere ✨🌙

Trey your hair is gorgeous! Now that that’s out of the way, watching you be “hurt” during this performance was hilarious 😂😭

Kayla Dudley

It was to question America and how everyone loves to pacify stuff and not look at the actual issues of America, America is very divided and the political climate is horrible he’s reflected the times, Drake is apart of the issue of pacifying and not reflecting the times, KDot is a artist with concepts and stories, i hope this makes sense lmaoo

C. Dorris

I didn't catch it the first time I watched the performance, but during "Not Like Us," the camera pans out to show the entire stage setup. Each controller button has dancers dressed in all black. I interpreted this as a representation of how we are mere entertainment to them, being controlled and watched. The symbolism in this performance is outstanding. I also wonder about the guy lying on the light pole during "Man At The Garden." I think it could symbolize a funeral, especially when Uncle Sam said, “You brought your homeboys the cultural cheat code. Deduct one life.” This line suggests that we have more power when we come together than when we are divided. Historically, when we unite, they often try to silence us. Additionally, when he mentioned, “I’m going to pass on this body, like John Stockton,” the dancers fell to the floor, creating outlines of bodies. In the performance of "Humble," he stood in the middle of the flag, symbolizing the divide in America. Every time you watch this performance, you're bound to find something new to enjoy!

Sophiek2710

I think he didn’t do anything from GKMC and TPAB because he already done Alright and Maad city on the Super Bowl with Dr Dre. But I also think regardless of what he done people would make it about Drake, it’s still all eyes on both of them. Knox Hill is really good if you want to know more about symbolism and breaking stuff down 😊

Curly Fries

Strong disagree with the opinion that he made the moment about Drake. The only Drake diss he did besides Not Like Us was Euphoria and he didn't even get to the Drake dissing part of it. The other songs were standard "I'm the best rapper" vibes not just "lol Drake". Clearly he was telling a story and those songs fit the story in ways that GKMC, TPAB, UU, and MMABS songs didn't.

Dynisha

I'm ngl I'm disappointed at Trey saying it was mostly about Drake especially coming off the "To Pimp A Butterfly" reaction. I thought you would have a better understanding of Kendrick as an artist and knowing that this performance was art is itself and art is subjective but to say its one thing when the message was way deeper is bogus, I'm sorry. I get you're still Drake fan and some things will hit differently but you have to step outside of everything being about that man. Other than I enjoyed the reaction and hope you guys react to more Kendrick performances.

Justcallmeclark

Kendrick is a artist and he is sensitive about his Ish

Chinedum Enyinna

The reason you think most of it was about Drake is because he is a stand in for the greater message Kendrick is trying to spread. Be authentic to who you are and be respectful to the history of the genre and culture. Also Beyonce performed formation the day after it was released and Beyonce Bowl was entirely Cowboy Carter.

Monique Holmes

Uncle Sam is Theoretical “Man”. The government figure who keeps his the ppl down. That’s why he keeps interjecting telling Kendrick how the show should go.

Monique Holmes

Squabble up isn’t about Drake. The reason why you think when he calls the rap industry out that he’s talking about Drake,is because Drake is fundamentally what’s wrong with hip hop. Also he did GKMC AND TDAP at his performance with Dr Dre.

Cinnamon Price

John Stockton had a great record of passes and assists in the NBA. The person he was passing to the most was a teammate that was later convicted of impregnating a 13 year old.

Zinnia Copeland

So you missed dna and humble. The reason he was invited to do the Super Bowl was because of the beef! These are the songs folks wanted to hear because like y’all, they don’t know his catalog. But this for sure is making them go listen. I’m late as hell to this reaction but look at all the videos made from this performance! His impact was felt and almost no one is talking about Drake in them (except for the fact that he looked into his soul and said “say Drake”)

Mrenee627
