Our First Night Out

“I can’t believe this is what you wanna do when we finally have a night to ourselves.”

My wife’s voice carried from the bathroom behind me as I stood in front of the mirror hanging from our closet door. The door was only ajar by an inch, her voice muffled but I could hear the irritation.

“Come on honey. We agreed to try this out…” I started pulling on my suit jacket. It was a jet black, nicely tailored though a little old. It’d been a while since I’d had an occasion to wear it, especially since the pandemic hit. Nothing like a lockdown to make you put your dress clothes in the back of the closet.

“That was nearly two years ago!” She called back quickly. The sound of hairspray and other things clinking in the bathroom accompanied the complaint.

It was true. In fact it was more than that. Lacy and I had been discussing swinging for a year before we finally got the courage and the opportunity to go out and explore. But that exploration hadn’t been much more than going to a club two times, having drinks with a few couples and then the world had closed down. Those couples we had talked with and even exchanged numbers with had lost contact quickly due to the chaos of the pandemic. Job loss or transition. Sickness. Child care concerns. It all became such a web of such frustration that the idea of pursuing this sort of lifestyle had fallen out for us.

Brushing my hands through my sandy hair, with a few streaks of gray starting to show prematurely, I let out a long breath. Lacy wasn’t wrong. We had only gone out twice. At best it had been like going out to a regular dinner and striking up friendly conversations with other couples. No extra flirting. No touching or rubbing. No sex.

Fun? Yes. Productive? No.

I looked back at myself in the mirror. Handsome enough at forty. Good career, one that thankfully hadn’t been affected by the pandemic. In fact I’d even gotten a pay raise. A loving husband and father to two wonderful little girls. I was the near definition of suburbanite. But like every other contented suburbanite, I wanted more. Didn’t everyone?

And I don’t mean I felt like I was missing something. My life was fulfilling. But there was that nag, that desire. Probably the most human instinct. Try something new. Dive into the unknown. Don’t stagnate, innovate.

Oh gosh, that corporate speak was working its way into my fantasies now too.

I scrubbed my hands over my face, feeling the light stubble that never seemed to go away no matter how often I shaved. “Honey, Lacy, I mean… haven’t you wanted to try going out again? To pick up where we left off?”

“We really didn’t leave off much of anywhere, Matt.” Her voice drifted from the bathroom. “Two dinners isn’t even dipping our toes in, in my opinion.”

I nodded to myself. “Yeah but…” I paused. What could I even say? It had taken us a year to talk ourselves into going and just checking out the scene. Then two years of being mostly home in sweats and having the girls around constantly. Together so much that sometimes we got a little sick of each other. But our love had lasted, and even grown stronger. So what more was there to investigate or explore?

Tons.

That voice in my head wouldn’t let it go and I know for a fact she felt it too. Lacy was an avid reader of nearly anything she could get her hands on and thanks to e-books, the possibilities were now literally limitless. Among the many books she’d been reading over the pandemic, I’d begun to notice a trend. Lots and lots of dollar erotic short stories and novellas. The kind of smut that once upon a time you'd have had to read in Penthouse or Playboy or some such publication. Heck there was a ton of it for free on Kindle Unlimited and other platforms. On one occasion I’d scrolled through her ereader and found nearly two dozen of those types of stories, and that had all been from just a two week period.

Lacy wanted to explore too, she just wasn’t the type to come out and say it.

The bathroom door opened and Lacy stepped out, a drifting mist of left over steam from her shower curling about her frame in the doorway.

My heart skipped a beat. It always did when I saw her. But now…

Lacy stood a little over five foot, her fiery red hair reaching her shoulders in waves. Intense green eyes locked my brown with a stern look. Her dress was the thinnest material I’d ever seen, a shiny silver that flowed down her slim figure to her mid thigh and slit up a few inches on her left thigh. Around her neck it gathered up in waves and plunged down to her small chest. A B cup on a good day, the dress clung tightly to her as if it were paint. Her long legs were covered in sheer light gray stockings and her silver heels gave her another inch of height she didn’t typically have. The lightest amount of makeup helped accent her lashes and cheeks and lips. She exuded sensuality.

If I were being honest, she looked just as sexy in sweats and a t-shirt. But this elevated her from a perfect ten to an eleven.

“Damn.” I muttered, eyes wide.

“Well… if I’m finally getting a night out without the kids, I want to go all out. Besides, you said this club was different. High class right?” She said walking out and grabbing her purse from her side of the bed.

I caught a glimpse of her backside, a small rear end but shapely in all the ways that mattered. I cleared my throat and tried to think of my grandmother as I stood up. “Y…yeah the uh, invite I got was kind of exclusive. A masquerade.”

She looked back, eyebrow up. “Like the movie Eyes Wide Shut or whatever it was?”

“Uh, I think kinda but less…cultish?” I shrugged.

She shook her head and rolled her eyes. “I guess that’s… okay. Masks probably make it more relaxed. Less likely to recognize someone.” Her cheeks were red.

That had been the one big thing we had been worried about. What if we went and saw someone we knew from picking up the girls from school, or work, or…church?!

“Yeah. And it’s pretty upscale. I read all about it, they sent me a link to all the ‘about us’ stuff. No means no, no exceptions. They have bouncers that help maintain the peace and make sure there’s no funny business besides the… the desired sort.” I cleared my throat again, embarrassed.

“Well, that shouldn’t be a problem. I’m going to drink and talk, not… well, ya know. Anyway, I’m not even sure you’re going to get lucky tonight. I would have settled for a nice quiet and quick dinner and then just some us time.” She slipped the silver chain of her purse over her shoulder and folded her arms. “Last chance. Go out or stay here?”

I stood looking at her, so beautifully dressed. It had been ages since she’d dressed up for anything. Same for me. Wearing a suit hadn’t been something I’d done in nearly half a decade. But I couldn’t help thinking about the e-books she’d been reading. About what we had talked over before the pandemic. We had gone out with intent, but the opportunity had just been pulled away from us. Now was a chance to start getting back in, to actually dip our toes in the water.

“Tell you what. If we don’t have a good time tonight, and if honestly your feelings have changed about this whole exploration, then we won’t ever do it again and I’ll arrange a whole evening of whatever you want.” I step close and put my hands on her arms, rubbing slowly and lovingly.

She smiled at me, that amazing small smile that had nearly knocked me on my ass that first time she’d flashed it at me when we met. “I’m gonna hold you to that. I have particular tastes you know.” Even with her heels she had to go onto her toes quickly to reach up and kiss me sweetly. “Let’s go and get this over with. Probably be lucky if we stay more than a couple hours.”
