This is a really good episode. I very much like the Earth Queen’s character and how delightful, awful and one-dimensional she is. As a kid I thought it was weird that the Dai Li hadn’t been disbanded. Now when I’m older I realize just how depressingly realistic it is. Kai sneaking around and stealing in the city is so fun, but the scene when Mako and Bolin meet their family always moves me to tears when they tell,that their parents have died. In a recent comic we actually learned their mother was from a highly conservative and bigoted part of the Fire Nation. Yet still she fell in love with someone from the Earth Kingdom - that only makes it all the more wholesome. I really like Zuko, who spent most of his youth constantly in pain and turmoil, seems so happy and at peace, but still as awkward as ever. I also really like how both Eska and Desna are the chiefs showing how the Northern Water tribe went from a society that didn’t even allow women to fight to now can have them as head of state. Katara’ actions did really make some changes. Zaheer and his gang are clearly a force to be reckoned with.
