Ryan technically never had the chance to leave. When his number went to zero, it is because he said that he will never leave Min behind. But when Ryan saw the door with the portal, he contemplated on going through it which contradicts his statement of never leaving Min behind. That’s why his number immediately went up and the portal closed.

It's ya boi

The show was written with 8 seasons in mind, with the 5th being Amelia's origin story told concurrently with this one, just from her POV. I imagine it wouldn't have wrapped up the present day Amelia story and that may have been saved for a later season, but still, it's the season I MOST wanted to see. Fingers crossed we eventually get it.
