Hello my wonderful patrons,

I’ve been doing a little experimenting this year with different techniques, and I kept coming back to this layered approach. It’s inspired by a process Cindy Baron has used for years, passed down from a master artist and then shaped into her own style. Of course, I couldn’t help but explore it in my own way too.

In this tutorial, I’m focusing on building depth slowly — letting each layer dry, softening edges, and allowing the colors to glow through one another. It’s a patient process, but that’s where the magic happens. The forests start to feel atmospheric, the light builds naturally, and those darker tree shapes settle in with more intention.

This was very much a “play and see what happens” session in the studio, and I wanted to bring you along for it. No pressure, no perfection — just exploration and learning how layers can completely change the mood of a painting.

I hope you enjoy painting this one with me, and I’d love to see your version if you give it a try.

PATREON EXCLUSIVE: New Watercolor Layering Technique

Today I am trying a new watercolor layering technique for a Landscape from Cindy Burton. In this video you are seeing my first attempt at this technique of layering these beautiful primary colors on top of each other without using any brush work at the beginning.
