10 Watercolor Struggles Every Beginner Has and How to Fix them!

Oh and for some reason my voice didn’t match up at the end 🤷‍♀️! 😜

Have you ever sat down to paint with watercolors… and somehow everything just goes wrong?

Your colors turn muddy, the water runs everywhere, the paper buckles, and the painting doesn’t look anything like what you imagined. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Almost every watercolor artist runs into these same challenges while learning.

In this video, I’m sharing 10 common watercolor struggles and simple tips that can help you improve your paintings. From muddy colors and water control to overworking your painting, these small adjustments can make a big difference. While we talk through these tips, I’ll also be painting a small watercolor so you can watch the process and see how these ideas work in practice.

Watercolor can feel unpredictable at times, but once you understand a few key concepts, it becomes a lot more enjoyable.

Thanks so much for watching and happy painting! 🦋 Kellie

Nancy

Thank you! I do all of these things but not stuck. Almost every painting I learn something new. Thanks for taking time to make this video.

Nancy

Where do you get the hold paint? I have some but it is in a pan and is not as bright as yours.

Kellie Chasse

Absolutely, my pleasure! If there just anything in particular you need help with let me know! I’m always looking for new video ideas for ya’ll!! 🦋

Nancy

Hooray for Amazon! Thanks for the link 🙂👍

Nancy

Last question… if it’s too late at night, ignore the question. Trying to find a good gray for rocks. Was going to try and get it in my Schminke gold Amazon order. What do you think about Jane’s Gray (Daniel Smith)?

Kellie Chasse

I have used that! The gray in the mission granulation is pretty! I usually make my own light gray with ultramarine and umber (very watery) then I’ll often use the white by Dr Ph Martin to dry brush over for texture. Maybe I’ll do a short demo this week for you?

Nancy

Ultramarine and umber … interesting. Easy maybe. I had been mixing black and white but because I found the white (titanium or Chinese, I forget…) is toxic, I pitched the tube! It was a small one. I have a cat who licks my paint water 😬 I understand that paint tubes without the CL or AL are not deathly but I also read that they are particularly harmful to cats. ?? So my first question to google about Jane’s Gray was: is it toxic? No. Google said it is a mix of ultramarine and burnt umber. Hmmm. How can that make gray? Interesting. I’d love a demo. You are sooo helpful. Thank you! Nancy

Dee

Thank you Kellie.. i’m still struggling a little bit with the initial paint mixing, but I’m working on it.. I really really want to learn how you judge to put down those blobs of paint and then create something out of it. I probably shouldn’t have used the word blobs but you knew what I meant. 😆. I was sitting here watching you do that bookmark and in your head you sort of knew what you were doing that’s what I’m trying to figure out. I love and have always loved loose abstract style I particularly like it in watercolor. I’m learning more about my water control and have switched to natural hairbrushes beacause I am in dry winter Chicago. that has helped a lot.

Kellie Chasse

You’ll get it I promise!! Maybe in the next one I see if I can explain my thoughts more out loud to see if that will help!!! We’ll do another loose one. 🦋 Love hearing where you are struggling, that helps me - help you! 🥳

Kellie Chasse

It’s my go too!! I’ll share a demo for you!! 💙🌹 So happy to hear it’s been helpful!!

Jan Thorpe

Thanks Kellie! My struggle is setting up my materials on my art table; What kind of palette should I use and what are the colors I should put on it and in what order?

Kellie Chasse

Thanks so much for sharing this—it's a really common struggle, and you're definitely not alone. When you're just starting out, I often recommend the Cotman Winsor & Newton set. It has a simple palette of 12 colors, but you can mix just about anything you need from it. It’s also a great way to build confidence with water control, which is one of the most important skills in watercolor.
