Hi everyone!

This week's tutorial is a little different, but I think it's one you'll come back to again and again.

I'm sharing my thoughts on the new Flunbrato Watercolor Swatch Book, which was sent to me to review. As many of you know, I'm constantly making color swatches—and constantly misplacing them! 😄 I love that this book gives me one dedicated place to organize all of my watercolor colors so they're easy to find whenever I'm planning a painting or comparing palettes.

Thanks to Flunbrato for sending this for review! If you are interested in grabbing one for yourself, they have graciously given me a coupon code to share with you:

Here is the Amazon Link: Flunbrato Swatch Book Info: https://amzn.to/3QCHZvb

Code: KELLIE22 - 10% OFF The Code will be active now - July 19, 2026 23:59 PDT

In this video, I'll walk you through my process for creating useful watercolor swatches, not just pretty color samples. We'll talk about:

🎨 Why swatching is one of the best ways to get to know your paints

💧 How to create a smooth value scale from a rich, "butter" consistency to a light, "tea" wash

🖌️ What the transparency symbols mean (transparent, semi-transparent, semi-opaque, and opaque)

⭐ How to read lightfastness ratings and why they matter

🌈 Tips for labeling your swatches so they become a valuable reference for future paintings

Whether you're just building your watercolor collection or you've been painting for years, keeping an organized swatch book can save time, help you choose colors more confidently, and make mixing much easier.

I'd love to know—do you keep your swatches organized, or are they scattered around your studio like mine used to be? 😊 Let me know in the comments!

Happy painting,

Kellie

Do you think the Flunbratto paper reacts similar to a good 100% cotton cold press? What is the code you used on some swatches with something like N with a circle around it? Isn't the dark bar separating the mass tone from the graduated color usually meant to determine how transparent it is (meaning if the color covers the black bar, it is opaque). There are a number of them available and in different sizes, 10 pages but more expensive. Even Etsy has custom ones. I especially like the clasp/binder! Thanks for the review

Thanks so much Debrah! 😊 I don't think the Flunbratto paper reacts exactly like a good 100% cotton cold press paper. It held up much better than I expected, but it doesn't behave quite like Arches. I think it's a great option for swatching and comparing colors. The "N" with the circle is a code for non-granulating paints, When you get a new set of paints, check them - they are all different for sure. I put it on there as it just helps me quickly identify those colors when I'm flipping through my swatches. I was not a swatcher.......actually didn't know that's what the dark bar is commonly used for! I didn't include that test in my swatches, but that's really interesting to learn. Thanks for sharing that! I had no idea there were so many swatch books available! I think we could easily make our own, too. The clasp on this one is one of my favorite features, although I just read from some that they didn't close for them, mine so far have been fine. I love that I can rearrange or add pages as my collection grows. Thanks for your thoughtful questions and for teaching me something new! 😊

Well, after having this show up on YT, FB, and Patreon you have me convinced lol. Just ordered one. Swatching seems like a good mindless thing for my spent brain to do 💜💛💚🩷💙🖌️
