Mawhahahahaah, at long last, we have an update for Eridium Dreams! The update, as it happens, is just over 14,100 words. A little short of the typical 15k target. In this case, I'm afraid that's because I needed to do a complete reread of everything that already existed, since it had been so long since this got updated.

That said, I also made a lot of corrections and some minor additions/adjustments as I went, so the master file is cleaner and the overall writing quality a bit better in places. Hopefully that makes up for it being slightly on the smaller side. If it doesn't? Well...I also got a the story's first lemon into chapter 14 ;-). So maybe that will help instead. Particularly as I went more in-depth on it than I do with most lemons these days...Anyway, as always, the new chapters are attached here in various formats. While you can find the Master Files containing the entire story in the Pinned Post. I will also be doing some Author's Notes in the comments shortly. Enjoy!Art isn't mine! It is by raulovsky! Chapter 11: A/N 1: Head spinning from the changes yet? With Benezia the Councilor instead of an accomplice of Saren, of course her only daughter has security for days. Meaning Therum was never going to go the same way. Assuming that Nihlus even knew about Liara, since it was presumably Bezzy that provided the details under mind control in ME:1. A/N 2: The details about the Asari Republics are either outright canon, or very minor extensions of such. I find it a bit tragic that the genuinely interesting societies the writers provided for the various races (in true Bioware background writing glory) are never really explored properly. I really, really hate that they have such an amazing universe and keep telling every story from boring old humanity's perspective. Seriously, give us a ME game with an Asari protagonist please!

Chapter 12: A/N 1: So, the Council expecting Spectre's to self-fund is...weird video game logic, at best. I decided to run with the detail here (much as I did in Final Error) and create an actual reason for it. A/N 2: Illium. You know, despite having dealt with Illium in Final Error, I somehow missed the fact that its only cities are at the polar caps? And it's CANON that there are arcologies elsewhere on the planet? Why the hell did they give us a super boring city to explore, when we could have been exploring an arcology? That would have been a way more interesting twist, if they did a good job of it. A/N 3: Obviously, I'm pretty heavily committed with this story on same-but-very-different. Since Nihlus was under the effect of the same Reaper, he took the same general steps, but filtered them through a completely different set of resources, contacts, and thought processes. The fact that Binary Helix was at least mostly a human company (I think?) also means they wouldn't be the same here. Heck, Noveria wouldn't be either. Hence Illium and Genetic Paradigms Inc. The company name is, by-the-by, mentioned in relation to Illium somewhere in canon. But there's no real detail regarding it. A/N 4: So, something I really wanted to push as an angle in this particular version of Mass Effect? The idea that both canon Shepard AND canon Saren were actually kinda...shit...at being Spectres. So far as I can tell, Spectres are SUPPOSED to be subtle tools used in the background. Not action heroes. While there will still be plenty of action (as seen in chapter 13), there will also be more missions like this. Actual Recon and information gathering that doesn't involve immediately slaughtering everything in the building.

Chapter 13: A/N 1: I like Matriarch Aethyta. Something those that have read Final Error already know :-p. In this case, though, she was simply a perfect fit to have at least loosely involved. I realized the moment I considered her that she would have massively benefited from the shift Humanity caused, with her previous ideas suddenly looking a lot more like a good idea... A/N 2: Weee, we got to see at least a little bit more of Javelins in use! To be honest, at this point...they aren't quite as stand out? Back when I first wrote Eridium Dreams, I wanted to play with power armor/flight suits, and Displaced Hero didn't even EXIST as a story yet. Automata did, but the deployment of Power Armor and Battletech style Mechs there wasn't planned for at the time. Meaning it's actually Eridium Dreams that was the first place I wanted to play with the concept. It's just that it ended up languishing and a lot of my ideas for how to use them ended up getting put into other stories. Ah well, they are at least a little different still, being based on the very horrible Anthem game that Bioware made. I liked the IDEA of that game, even if the execution was horrifically bad.

Chapter 14: A/N 1: I could not resist the idea of Wrex going from 'kill the Rachni' to 'Hey, these guys hate the Salarians too! I kinda like them!' A/N 2: Speaking of that, the Rachni have always bothered me. The Queen is just too reasonable for the Rachni wars to make sense. In Final Error, I made them an early victim of the Reapers. Here, I decided to play on the fact that...well...the Salarians found them and the Salarians have a history of being sketchy as fuck. I find it completely plausible and believable that they would have tried to control the Queens and caused the Rachni War in the first place...then buried that little detail. A/N 3: Smut! Glorious smut! It's sort of amusing that Sae ended up being an Ass Girl, since I myself am actually more of a Breasts than Ass man. Still, with Miranda to work for as inspiration, it's hard not to lean into the idea ;-). I also figured that planting some smut might just give this story a bit more of a following. We'll see...

Thank you for the chapters! I love this story's whole premise, and I especially love that it's one of the few ME stories I've found that isn't an inspired inventor fic or one that just adds an OC crew member who barely changes anything. This might be my favorite story you have simply from the base idea and how wildly different everything should be from canon's rails if it ever gets to finish. I hope with this update it gets a better chance at winning some of the polls, but either way I'm looking forward to whenever it gets it's next chance to update. Now I'm gonna go check out your Final Error fic that I've somehow missed.

I'm glad you like it! Canon and I barely speak to each other in most fics :-p. As for Final Error...fair warning, that fic is waaaaaaaayyyyy more smut-oriented than any of the other stories. It was mostly written before any of the other fics, as a reward for a different Patreon page of mine that was much more adult-content oriented. It still has a solid underlying story, but expect lemons every 5-7,000 words :-p.

Just wondering if there is any possibility of this fic being an Author's Choice fic? Also, wanted to ask if making it lean more toward Borderlands would make it more appealing to you to write since you have Stripper with a System now in Mass Effect-verse? Like, have Sovereign not be a vanguard for the Reaper threat but actually be a Lone Entity- the Geth found a Vault and opened it releasing him. Maybe have other Vaults, the Thorien could be in one, or it could have been in one before the Protheans released it? Have various Turian/Asari/Salarian Mega Companies along the lines of Dahl, Hyperion, Mediocre, etc, etc. I would need to re-read, but could you make TIM flavored as a type of Handsome Jack character? Oh, and idk if its been addressed, but could a Siren's AI survive the death of the Siren? Was wondering if the "Angel" (maybe EDI?) Equivalent character could have that origin? Or maybe her siren is in a coma? Or in some kind of stasis/trap holding her hostage to force the AI to obey Cerberus/Hyperion and/or TIM/Jack's commands?

It isn't impossible, but it's unlikely. Mostly as the two reasons I largely dropped it still fully apply. One, that it wasn't popular. Two, that it kept going so long between updates that I essentially forgot what the hell I was planning between each update. Meaning I essentially recreated a way forward each time from scratch. As for leaning into the Borderlands side. No. That wouldn't happen. Mostly as Borderlands lore is insanely limited. I made the decision not to make it a true crossover early on, specifically because researching it led me to discover how incredibly poorly fleshed out the Borderlands lore is. Mind you, more games have actually come out since then, I think. But...well...I also loathe the more recent games. I will never, until the heat death of the universe or beyond, forgive Telltale for killing off Maya. She was like 97% of the reason I actually liked the series. Most of the other characters in it are kinda...meh.

Yeah, but I was implying more putting Borderlands Labels on Mass Effect Lore/using names from Borderlands to label existing Mass effect lore. Noveria and Ilum are full of various mega corporations, the various weapons and armor manufacturers in the Mass effect games could get Borderlands names slapped on as replacements, etc etc. Honestly that might all together be more a set-up for a complete rewrite. And probably would work better with a few more sci-fi properties in a Space Opera Amalgamation fic to further flesh things out. I just really enjoyed the work you did on Earth's history/the development of Eridium, and your version of Sirens as Supersoldiers. I just don't want to see such a fun concept go by the wayside. Hmm... did you ever watch (or read, I think there are books, and there will be a game soon) the Expanse? It has a conflict between Earth, Mars, and "Belters". Or Halo, pre-war with the covenant when colonies were rebelling. Both those could serve as different settings for the Siren concept to fit into, or could be added to the Mass Effect universe for an Amalgamation. (Plus Sirens fighting against or alongside Spartans could be cool to see.) Citadel space versus Covenant forces, with or without certain aspects of different settings included (the massive fleet of Reapers in dark space, the Flood, Vault Monsters- of which one could be a suped up Reaper that could get released, the Collectors, Rachni, Eridani/Protheans/Forerunners or other "ancient/lost super civilizations", etc). If nothing else, could you consider including the Sirens/their associated technologies into Stripper with a System?(heck maybe even an Eridium Dreams type version of Maya as a summon who brings said technologies with her since you like her character so much, though: with or without Krieg as a bonus/twofer?)
