I am very glad I got this done early, as I've been down with food poisoning for the last 2 and a half days. Ugh. As is, I'm putting this out a day early both because I've been itching to post it now that it's done, and because I'm still a bit under the weather. Going ahead with at least the Patreon release (I'll hold off the public chapter until tomorrow, probably), is a way to get something done when I'm still not quite up to writing much.

Anyway, I'm extremely pleased with how the major twist of this turned out. There are other bits I'm a little less sure of, by the really 'big, epic moment' of this came together quite well. Though I can almost heard the screaming from some people about certain things. Probably less from you guys and gals, and more from people next month when this is the public release. Before anyone starts any rants, please read the authors notes for the chapters :-p. They'll be more extensive than usual, precisely to head off at least some of the knee jerk reactions some people will likely have to certain bits of what I did ;-). Mostly explanations, not excuses, of course. I regret nothing!

The Art isn't mine. Honestly it's not really right for the Luffy of this story either, as he doesn't have the same scars. But the vibe, at least, fit the chapter. Unfortunately, while I got it from DeviantArt, there was a note there claiming it was stolen and I couldn't find an original source. If anyone finds place with the original artist, let me know so I can link it!

As always, the new bits of story are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Master Files containing the entire story in the Pinned Post shortly. I'll also be posting some author's notes in the comments once I've, you know, actually written them. Enjoy more of Halfway Broken!

Chapter 72: A/N 1: No, I'm not revealing which Fruit they picked for the Discovery yet. Rumors that I haven't done so because I'm still sorting through the best options are, I assure you, most probably exaggerated...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 73: A/N 1: So...a looooootttttt of stuff I've been sitting on for a while is starting to come to a head in these chapters. I mentioned the mushi they had a long while ago, like clear back in the East Blue I think, but they haven't had much call to use them. Because Luffy acquired them through his Shop, he has access to all the possible types at various prices, including White Mushi. They just...really haven't had anyone they needed to call. A/N 2: The mushi are minor compared to CP-9, though. I've been pulling my hair out for months trying to explain, over and over and over and over and over and over and over, to people that CP-9 didn't get Pluton's blueprints. The various disasters that the Strawhats and Alabasta have caused made the WG recall CP-9. The group had been embedded for years, with absolutely ZERO results produced. Without Robin to push things forward, they didn't have any hope on the horizon of changing things either, so they were recalled to take over protection of VIPs. This allowed the WG to free up Marines without making it obvious they were using WG assets to bolster a faltering position. A/N 3: I know some people are going to be upset at how easily Kalifa and Luci lost. Frankly, though? This was a case where they were both genuinely outclassed and ambushed. If they'd gotten a chance to react properly, they might have put up at least some fight, particularly Luci. But what Luffy and Yamato pulled was, ironically, a brutal assassination rather than a fair fight. Without Haki of their own, the two just didn't have enough ability to react when facing a pair as strong as Luffy and Yamato. You'll note that most of the OTHER members of CP9 but up more of a fight. Though even there, because the crew is stronger than they would have been at Enes Lobby by a fair bit, I had to have the stronger fighters like Kuina and Zoro paired up against pairs of CP-9 to make it actually realistic as a serious fight. A/N 4: If you guessed that the whole point of what they were doing was to draw off Kizaru? Give yourself a cookie! I left enough hints that many of you probably DID guess the gist. Though possibly not the scale. Which fell somewhere between the extremes I saw people guessing :-p.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 74: A/N 1: Kizaru! So...I actually had to do a bit of a deep dive on him, finding all of his canon fights and trying to get a bead on just how strong he is. What I discovered? Most fanfiction seems to hilariously underplay his power level. Dude is SCARY. As in, he went toe-to-toe with Fully Awakened Joyboy Luffy and honestly seemed to be either at the same level or possibly outright WINNING. That puts him firmly in the same power frame as someone like a Yonko, even if I put him as slightly weaker than he'd be post time-skip. Luffy and Yamato TOGETHER were a decently tough fight for him, but he'd likely have hammered either one of them separately. A/N 2: Luffy, just for reference, has NO FUCKING CLUE who Marcus/Mars is. His knowledge of One Piece from his past life doesn't include just how crazy strong the Elders are, nor does he know about the God's Knights. If Rayleigh hadn't stepped in, Luffy and Yamato would have been very, very dead. A/N 3: Oda has been terrible about developing just what the fuck is going on with said Elders and Imu. So...I'm sort of filling in the blanks a bit on some things. Like whatever power it is that Imu gives them being cursed or unholy in some way. That is implied fairly heavily at times, so I'm running with it. This is part of the reason I wanted Luffy to have his new sword...and also a reason I went with a divine-adjacent Mythical Zoan for Luffy. Or, at least, I'm going to pretend I thought that far ahead :-p. A/N 4: Yes. Luffy awoke his Devil Fruit. He BARELY pulled off staying sane through it, as much because of the Karma and Luck advantages he gave himself as anything. Since he didn't exactly do it the RIGHT way. Though the fact he was so far along with his usage of the Fruit helped him. A/N 5: No. Luffy cannot solo a Gorosei now. Even once he adapts to his Awakened form, he'll be effectively on par with Kizaru now. He won't need Yamato's help against the Admiral any longer, but much like Awakened Canon Luffy, he'd be in for a serious fight. Any of the other Elders would rip him apart, as would the higher ranking God's Knights for that matter. At least as he is right now. What happened to Mars was pure, utter, undiluted surprise. Not just one surprise, but several in rapid sequence. Luffy being able to hurt him and make it stick was a nasty shock which, combined with the presence of both Rayleigh and the Nika Fruit user, was enough to convince Marcus/Mars to make a tactical withdrawal. Even then, he just flat out couldn't have seen a mid-battle SUCCESSFUL Mythical Zoan awakening coming, and dodged from a known dangerous attack right into a beam of holy-infused plasma that no amount of Haki in the world could have let him seen coming. Absent the System to help Luffy jump forward toward Awakening mid-battle, it just flat couldn't have happened, and even the Gorosei don't have access to information about Luffy's system. It was, by pretty much any metric, impossible. Which is something even the best Haki can't account for. He got zapped by a freak series of events...influenced heavily by luck and Karama. The rolls of the dice of fate Luffy was leaning into weren't without affect...

Fucking brilliant chapters well done

Josh4n

I loved the update. Well done!

Spoiler Alert You Novus beautiful son of a genius. Did we think he will capture Celestial dragons ? Yes , we did. Did we guess Yellow Monkey interferance? Yes we did. But grossei,ow man I did not see it at all. Epic victory for crew can't wait to read consequences and equaly epic reactions from powers to be. It is nearly equal significance to War of Best i think. PS. Hope you get well soon and a lot of thanks for awesome chapters.

Daemonioros

These chapters were Brilliant once again. Holy hell an elder dead truly changes thing. And the celestial dragons there still ended up dying. Well if a distraction was the goal for Luffy here then he more than provided it. Really like Luffy having his fruit awakened. Do think he will need a long while to train to be able to properly deal with the situation.

Derek Palm

I need a reaction from marinford now damn it that was awesome

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Glad you enjoyed them. :-) Yeah. That's why I wanted to trigger it now. This way, he gets the training period during the timeskip, some of which I'll cover, to adjust to the Awakened fruit and figure out how to use it properly.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

We'll get some reactions sooner or later. I'll actually be putting up a poll in the next couple of days to see if people want me to cover the battle at Marineford too. The answer to that will likely determine when, exactly, we get those reactions.

Fireblade974

OK wow... so. SPOILER ALERT!!! Chapter 72 was nice i have been wondering what they will do with the other two slots cant what to find out next time on One Piece Halfway Broken ;) Chapter 73 cool and yes I can see what your saying with CP9 and there relative level and cool I guessed right on the flashlight showing up Chapter 74.... wow just wow expected kidnaping/killing world nobles expected, Admiral Flashlight coming in to fight guessed, A F*****G Gorosei to rushing NOPE my wildest long shot guess was a Heavenly Knight to come in. Not to even count that Marcus died. I hope Luffy and crew are ready to bolt and Luffy didn't use so much karma to end up in the negatives. (though maybe killing a demon Gorosei would help with that even if he used karma to help do it.) Cant what to see what kind of cluster F**k will happen know and if Rayleigh will go with or help them lay low for a while and/or train cause they just jumped their priority level a little bit you know probably. Loved the chapters and the story keep up the great work.

Derek Palm

Hell yea that sounds great

Orchamus

Holy shit, did not in any way see a Gorosei popping in😮 Excellent chapter, fantastic 🎆

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I did consider making it a God's Knight :-). Ultimately, I decided it made more sense for one of the Gorosei to act. They live in Mary Geoise, which is extremely nearby (relatively speaking) and were virtually certainly gathered together to watch what happened at Marineford. That means the Elders would have been perfectly placed to react to what was happening, if they choose to react at all, whereas they might well have dispersed the Knights on various jobs the same way they did CP9. Essentially, they were the only ones that likely hadn't been committed somewhere, simply because they normally don't commit themselves to direct action anywhere at all. Then add in three additional factors: 1) The presence of the Nika Nika Fruit user. They know who has it, Yamato's been too active for them not to know. Having it literally almost in their lap, and in the hands of someone who themselves can be used as leverage? That would make interference VERY tempting. 2) The lack of witnesses. Normally, one of the reasons they don't commit is the policy of anyone below the rank of Commodore not being allowed to know about them/their strength. But here they had a scene already set with no Marines they would care about (except Kizaru who is high enough ranked) and otherwise no one around to witness them acting. Even the other nobles were already unconscious from the Haki pressure at that point. 3) On top of both of those, Luffy's a known issue that's been causing them massive headaches AND just abruptly revealed while fighting Kizaru that he's got a Mythical Zoan Fruit of his own. Not to mention that he's taken direct action against them, where before he was mostly avoiding conflict. Together, I figured the most likely reaction here was that one of them would take the chance to act, figuring they had a lot to gain and nothing to lose. Wrongly, as it happened on that last part, but that wasn't something they could have anticipated.

WhatAFungi

OMG!!! What a cool pay off!!! I will say…the system is no longer half-way broken. The ending of that fight felt a little full broken to me ;P Between this and Stallion of the Line, I gotta actually watch One Piece, don’t I? Great chapter! Can’t wait to see the new bounties. Because Luffy’s will probably break the bank.

Camille

Oh my F*****G GOD! Novus what the hell this was insane! These chapters legitimately got me so hyped! Especially that last one damn... The World Government just keeps losing, Imu must be losing his mind xD Firstly, this whole sequence of events made a lot of sense and I can totally see one of the five elders coming to deal with this themselves, so big thumbs up there. The fight with Kizaru was great too, and I really enjoyed that Yamato was depicted as an equal partner in this fight since Luffy's new awakening won't put him too far ahead of her. And the dice of fate thing was a bit of a shame since he had to rush a power that was basically gifted to him but that also made a lot of sense, and he still has to figure it out himself from here so I'm satisfied. Plus he's running out of perk points and he's completely run out of Karma points so I know this was probably a one off thing that you had to resort to if you actually planned on having Luffy and his crew getting out of this alive xD Secondly regarding Discovery's devil fruits, a paramecia to help navigate under the sea as you said would be really cool and I can't wait to see what you come up with. Then having just straight up murdered Saint Marcus means that Luffy now has a convenient flying Mythical Zoan up for grabs for the final Discovery devil fruit which would fit so perfectly. -> Itsumade's legend: "Itsumade appear in the night sky during times of trouble—such as plagues and disasters, or flying over battlegrounds where many have died. In particular, they fly over places where there is suffering or death, yet little has been done to alleviate the pain of the living or pacify the spirits of the dead. The strange birds fly about in circles all night long, crying out in a terrible voice. The birds appear to be asking those below how long will this suffering go unnoticed. It is thought that the spirits of the dead and suffering form into onryō which take the shape of these birds. They demand recognition of their suffering and torment." This would fit really well thematically for the pirate crew's ship! Although your comment on how having the ship consume a zoan would be risky is fair tbh, especially a mythical one as you already mentioned. But having each of Discovery's devil fruits be a different type would be awesome, and Itsumade would enable its flight perfectly! Finally, looking forward to seeing the repercussions of these events, this is so huge. Luffy's bounty is about to skyrocket, probably above 1 billion (probably much more) which would be insane but also make sense due to the enormous threat he just demonstrated he was to the World Government. Also curious as to whether Rayleigh will want to talk with Luffy before they skedaddle, since he's unconscious right now and probably will be for a while, and they really need to get the fuck out of here... Luffy probably needs some answers as to who exactly he just killed though. And the crew are probably terrified out of their minds I can't wait to see Hina and Usopp's reaction specifically lmao Big round of applause for Kaya, Vivi and probably Robin for the swift coordinated rescue under immense pressure though! SUPER TRAINING MONTAGE HERE WE COME! Please don't skip forward the whole two years if possible, showing snippets of interesting developments within those two years would be great! Thanks so much for the chapter, and I hope you get better soon x P.S. Concerning the Battle of Marineford, you don't have to do the whole thing (would take too long), but a few snippets of events that diverged from canon thanks to the Strawhats' shenanigans would be very interesting! Would love to see everyone's reaction to Kizaru disappearing for a bit, and then coming back a little later all bloodied and missing an ear xD Same with their reactions to the fact that so few Warlords are there :) Garp's reaction to Luffy's actions when he learns of them would be so funny as well! P.P.S Still so pumped that they just killed 3 Celestial Dragons, Rob Lucci, at least 2 other CP9 and probably more, and a fricking ELDER WARRIOR GOD! This is such a huge blow that the crew are going to have to be soooo careful during the next two years while they get stronger, to prevent being spotted early and wiped out before they can resist. Making their home base Alabasta might work actually, and they can stealthily and briefly visit whichever island is needed for each crewmate's power-up before returning to Alabasta every time. But might be too risky, staying in the Calm Belt could be even more awesome now that I think about it! Having the crew learn to survive on Ruskaina would be so perfect. Obviously Luffy and Yamato are a bit beyond that but the rest of the crew will need to be capable of handling quite a high level of danger by the end of the two years and Ruskaina would be the perfect test! Anyway I should stop speculating on your plans since I'm sure you will end up surprising us!

The Foreign Traveler

HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIT!!! WHY THE EVER LIVING “FUCK” IS AN END GAME BOSS AT THE MIDWAY POINT!?!?!? *Then reads Author’s comment explaining why* …oh. Alright then. That explains that. But let’s be blunt here. Your Luffy and everyone present, to me at least, got LUCKY. If Luffy didn’t have all that Karma… If he didn’t have those Perk points… If he didn’t have the abilities he does… Hell, if he didn’t have Shichiseikan… Everyone would be dead. *Places hand on chest to calm pounding heart* Fuck, the moment I realized that this was a Gorosei they were dealing with…I was genuinely scared for everyone. Congratulations Novus, you made me experience a Primal Fear I haven’t felt in…can’t even remember the last time I’ve felt like this, if ever. Only Respect and Admiration for ya. I tip my hat to your skills as an Author. But thank fucking Nika that this turned out so well. Now? Now I’m outright DREADING the consequences of this…

Ototsu_Yume

Absolutely amazing chapters, thanks for writing them. I hope you get well soon.

Jay Emberhowl

Thanks for the chapter, as someone just recovering from food poisoning i feel your pain and hope you recover soon

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Only sort of :-p. Luffy got VERY lucky. He's certainly more powerful than his canon iteration at this point, but he's honestly not yet to the power level canon Luffy eventually reaches. The whole point in a 'Halfway Broken' system was to allow for the character to power up beyond canon, without going fully OP like a lot of gamer fics tend to end up. Luffy, even with his latest power up, is will within the general power level of the Admirals and Yonko, any one of which would likely drub him one-on-one until he gets a lot more experience with his new power up. One Piece...the anime is good up until the time skip. Then it nose-dives HARD in quality. After that, read the mana is what I've been told :-p. Personally, I'm getting a lot of the post time-skip stuff from the wiki, or by watching specific segments which I known contain things I need to have a grasp of. I really should find the manga and read it now that I'm reading the timeskip points, though.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm glad it made sense :-). Also that the Kizaru fight was good. Those sorts of fights are always the hardest for me to handle. As for him rushing the awakening...yeah, he's going to have some problems with control for a while because of that. That said, the only reason he survived it (beyond Luck and Karama) was because he was already around 75% of the way toward Awakening from his own training. He was close enough that the Perks brute forcing it the rest of the way was risky, but survivable. As for the Devil Fruit. Remember that when Luffy kills someone they are absorbed as Spirit Coupon points, rather than as the specific Fruit. With the Fruit reappearing randomly in the world unless he purchases it. He might be tempted to, a Mythical Zoan that he has the points for and knows is up for grabs would be a strong temptation. But, as you said that I said, giving any sort of Zoan to the Discovery is...questionable. Possibly awesome, and possibly a horrible plan :-p. Luffy's bounty absolutely will jump massively. How much will depend on how much the WG want to admit he did. They'll certainly pin the Noble deaths on him, but they aren't likely to want to mention his killing of an Elder. If I do the Marineford Battle, what I'd likely do is show 2 or 3 perspectives. Ace for one, Vivi watching through the Mushi for another, and POSSIBLY a few snippet's from either Whitebeard or a high ranking Marine like Garp. Enough to give a general view of how the highlights of the battle went, but not give nitty-gritty detail on everything. I won't be skipping the two years :-). I've mentioned before that I'll be doing both some original islands and some of the locations that the crew would have hit if they'd been split up. Plus some more things, like possibly a few islands in the various Blues, as well. I'll almost certainly skip time here and there, but the majority of it will be covered. It will also be the time in which the relationship starts expanding. First with Robin, who's mostly there already, then with the others that won inclusion.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yep. They got VERY lucky. I said as much in the chapter 74 author's comment :-p. Though, to be honest, the most important piece of Luck was Rayleigh deciding to step in. The Luck/Karma, Perk points, Holy sword, etc. Without those they'd never have KILLED Mars. But Rayleigh stepping in likely would have at least allowed them to escape. Whether Rayleigh could actually kill one of the Elders is debatable. But as the former First Mate of the Roger Pirates, he's at least at the level to hold one of them off for a while. Long enough for Luffy and Yamato to get some distance and be Air Doored by Vivi. I'm pleased I managed to infuse tension like that into the fight :-p. I was really worried I wasn't going to be able to do justice to the whole sequence. But it came together surprisingly easily and well when I was writing it. Honestly, I actually had more trouble with Kizaru than the Gorosei fight, somehow... Well, I'm pretty sure ALL the factions are dreading the results too ;-). Rayleigh's comment at the end, and Kizaru's thought on that comment, were spot on. 'This complicates matters' indeed ;-).

Camille

Yeah I'm not mad at the awakening, having two years to work on it is also quite important for future challenges so it's quite perfect in the end. And yes I was speculating that Luffy might buy back the Mythical Zoan he just killed off but I definitely wouldn't be mad at a gravity ship either! That sounds epic and wouldn't diminish The Discovery's aesthetic either which the zoan unfortunately would. Fair point for Luffy's bounty, I actually hadn't thought of that so probably slightly below 1 billion would be my guess. Your Battle of Marineford plan sounds great, as does the two years! Looking forward to it :)

Jaideep

HELL YES!!! Luffys Threat level just way up as. All mythical Zoans seem to have a dash of divinity to them which counters the so called immortals. Hell even the Gomu fruit is basically a mythical zoan. Im guessing this also means that Sengoku's Buddha form also counters the so called immortals which is why they only appeared in the story after Sengoku retired.

Eklis

Holy shitcky fuck!!! That was so incredibly amazing!! I don't even have words!!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Not quite all of them, Marco's Phoenix and the Orochi model arguably don't. Being mythical creatures that aren't directly linked to divinity. The majority certainly seem to follow that theme though. The Nika Nika Fruit (the Gomu Gomu no Mi's real name) more directly than most. I do suspect that the divine aspect is why the WG absolutely hates Mythical Zoans getting into anyone else's hands, though. Aside from them generally being extremely powerful. Every depiction we've seen of Imu and the Elder's powers seems to follow the idea that they are more along the lines of cursed/demonic power. Though there's no actual confirmation of that, so far as I know. Oda's really kinda...not developed them much.

Ryu

So good, i love it

BPellet

(Spoilers) This was a crazy climax to this part Novus! I think we mostly guessed what the general outline of the plan was going to be, but I don't think anyone guessed that one of the ELDERS would show up! The fighting itself was really well written, and it also made sense that Luffy and Yamato would be able to hold off Kizaru but not outright win. Also, I think this is the first time I've ever seen the concept of two haki users combining their haki against an enemy's haki to crush it. Despite that though Mars decided this was too big of an opportunity to miss and showed up, forcing Luffy to use all his luck, also inadvertently making Luffy and Yamato kill the celestial dragon hostages, made Luffy prematurely awaken, and on top of all that let himself get killed while running away. Basically, Mars just added a whole lot of extra poop onto Luffy's plate. The fallout from everything that just occurred is going to lead to some serious repercussions for the whole crew. Hopefully Rayleigh tracks down the Strawhats before they flee to explain what they just did. Also, hopefully Rayleigh, Shanks, or even Garp decide that the crew needs some serious training to survive the manhunt Imu and the WG are about to commence. On top of that Luffy now has to deal with his awakening, and potentially some negative karma events. Plus we still don't know what the outcome of Marineford will be, and I'm definitely looking forward to reactions from that and from others discovering what the Strawhats just did. Thank you for the chapters Novus! Hope you feel better soon as well.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Glad I managed to be at least a little surprising. The way the updates landed made it hard not to give away a lot of it :-p. I'm also pleased most people seem to have liked the fights. Those are the thing I often have the most trouble with, though the Elder vs Rayleigh and Strawhats came together much easier than usual. As for the Haki thing, yeah...I think it's sort of rare for multiple Haki users to be on the same side, in the same fight. Even if it happens, most of the high-level fighters that use it aren't exactly team players. Not even people like Luffy who is big into the whole 'Nakama' thing. But with them planning this in advance, I figured it might be something they would cook up as a way to try leveling the playing field. With with to practice on the way to the Archipelago, they could pull it off...though I also tried to make it somewhat clear that weren't sure if it would work. With Luffy being relieved it did. Most Haki use in-series seems to be VERY Brute Force, so I think there's some room for experimentation with more subtle uses. Like I've been doing with Kaya. Thankfully, the WG and Marines are going to have their own problems to deal with as well ;-). So they won't be able to focus all their attention on trying to hunt down a crew that now has a ship capable of hiding them pretty well...

Robert Lemanski

Marco's Phoenix might not be a divinity in and of itself, but the Phoenix as a mythical creature absolutely does have relevant abilities. Many myths/legends/takes on Phoenixes have their fire have a purifying effect, on top of or part of it's healing. Basically, the aspects of healing and renewal and hope combine with the destructive aspect of Phoenix fire to make it able to purify corruption and cleanse evil taints from the land and from demons. As for other Mythical Zoans: Nami's Pegasus is debatable, but the purification aspect of some of it's myths probably work here. Kaido's Dragon fruit probably can't do anything, unless it's breath attacks have can have a holy/purifying aspect to them... which would make sense as Eastern Dragons are often divine in nature. The Kitsune likely can't do anything to specifically counter demonic power, being a trickster fox spirit and not divine in nature. There are a few other Mythical Zoans introduced in Wano and one in Elbaf... The Onyudo. a Monk-yokai. is debatable- it's a yokai spirit but it's also a monk that in some myths helps people so maybe it has some purifying abilities tucked away for a rainy (demonic) day. The Kirin is a divine creature in most Eastern myths, so it's got this covered. But yeah, as you pointed out,, the Orochi Mythical Zoan is just shit out of luck on the anti-demon front lol.

Kaya is so muc broken in a legit way (no system). The fact she's a cute frail-looking gentle(?) girl make it funnier. And Luffy... bro got into Holy Beast Mode and just say 'nah, I'll win' and awakened?! Because the instinct thingy look like a awakening.
