Whew! Wasn't entirely sure I was going to get this posted tonight. The editing pass seemed to want to drag on much longer than usual! Thankfully, I made it through, though I'll probably hold off on the public chapters until tomorrow.

Anyway, this set of chapters got pretty close to hitting 16,000 words, and I'm fairly pleased with it. There aren't any huge revelations or anything, but I think it does a solid job of getting back into covering the Crusade. As well as showing a few peeks and hints from other perspectives. A few of of which we've seen before, a couple of which we haven't, including a short bit shown from Zavra's mindset which I think does a decent job of continuing to build her up. As does the reaction of others to her.

The art is an AI generation, by the by, though not one of mine. I found it while looking for a good general look for the Gungan designed Ray-class corvette. No idea who the original creator is.

As always, the new bits are attached to this post in various formats. Likewise, I'll be updating the Master Files in the Pinned Post shortly (after I make typo corrections curtesy of The Foreign Traveler's help!). There will also be a few Author's Notes in the comments, once I have time to write them up! Enjoy more of Displaced Hero!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 97: A/N 1: Pfft. We all know Padmé has zero self-preservation instincts...this result was inevitable.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 98: A/N 1: So, Knight Mano's efforts were based on the real life tricks pulled in WWII by Jasper Maskelyne of the A' Force deception department. If you're a history buff at all, some of the stuff they pulled off is fascinating reading. Given that Star Wars combat is based a lot around WWII style warfare, I thought it was a good fit to include something like it.

Chapter 99: A/N 1: A not-so-idea observation by Izuku and Aayla about Jedi and Warfare. Hmmm, I wonder just how important that might end up being... ;-) A/N 2: Okay, Zavra is pretty fun to write. It was a little hard getting into her headspace at first, and I'm not entirely sure I've got a grasp on it yet, but it was fun to experiment with at least... A/N 3: Aayla, everyone who has ever through Harley Quinn was hot feels for you right now... A/N 4: So, I wonder how many of you guessed what the solution to countering Null Torpedoes was? I DID mention that there WAS an solution and someone would eventually hit on it. They are still effective tools, but they CAN be countered if the enemy has enough time to think about it and money to do refits. Of course, the Republic and CIS have no idea yet, really.

Chapter 100: A/N 1: The Silencer was a Sith super weapon in SWTOR. Even within the game's war, it eventually becomes less effective as the Republic develops counters. So it's no longer really a SUPERweapon at this point, but it's still a powerful weapon option. A/N 2: Mei makes progress with the portals! No, I didn't intend them only to be for kink use. Seriously, way too many people thought I was ignoring the potential there -_-. It's just being developed as a LONG term advantage, not a short term thing to be used in the Hutt Crusade. A/N 3: Esa is a new viewpoint, but one I think will be helpful in the future to keep some of the politics from overrunning the story.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 101: A/N 1: Ah Shaak, don't worry, you're just the first of many, many Jedi to have odd reactions to Zavra... A/N 2: Poor Padmé. Unfortunately for her, her worldview is frankly moronic and unsupportable within a reality like Star Wars. She'd fit in better in Star Trek or a Superhero world. Star Wars is pretty much a Death Universe, not even just a Death World. It can't really be fixed without judicious application of ultra violence.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 102: A/N 1: Gee, I wonder who arranged to have those Battleships there. It's almost like someone wants to cause the galaxy to be pissed at the TF...

Gscruiser

Good lord the dominos are falling everywhere...and not in the right directions. I really hope we get a Hutt or Palpy POV sometime soon xD

Fireblade974

Love the chapters keep up the great work. Your definitely right on padmas views not really working in SW. I wonder just how hard palps is going to have to push to get things to go his way with Izukus ability to push through the Vale kinda.

Delphinous

bet ol palpy is pretty upset with how badly the hutts are doing, since he was really banking on the league falling apart and not winning. also just had a fun idea now that mei's portal technology is reaching weaponizable levels: portal torpedos not having a torpedo launcher on the other side of a portal to effectively increase magazin capacity (although thats not a bad idea) but the ides is to simply have a torpedo who's nose is replaced with a portal. as long as whatever it hits shields are down, it should theoretically be able to just fly through the ship coring it the whole way. give it more advanced navigation so that it can reliable do things like target the primary power generator or something and you can just rapidly disable a ship in a way that armor can't really fight, because your just portaling it out the other side. realistically though, if they start using the portals in any sort of a military capacity they MUST give them some heavyduty scuttling fail-safes because letting that particular technology leak would be a really really bad idea

WhatAFungi

So much goodness in this chapter. I didn’t realize how hard I’d fall for Zavra. She is my new Waifu, and no you cannot touch her. She is mine. In all seriousness, what a fun character to read. Which leads nicely into…Mai…just being Mai. Really… a “pull the lever” quote just so awesome. And that tech she’s building! Their ground forces are going to be able to instantly respond to any disturbance on any planet without travel time problems. Let alone the logistics buff. Once they’re done with the crusade, not a single planet is going to be impoverished. The trade alone would bolster any “backwater” systems. I’m really looking forward to when all the investments Izuku’s made start really paying off. All of the freed slaves finishing their work programs, all of the ships that are being built, all these logistics chains that will be fully optimized to Mai’s standards, and all of the fully corruption-free governments. Izuku’s slice of the galaxy is going to be paradise and his stick will be much bigger than Palpie’s or the Republic’s. Just imagine what he could do with a fully stocked fleet, with several dreadnaughts and a gestalt of battle-meditating newly awakened force users. Such a cool story!!! Edit after reading the ANs: I feel called out by the Harley Quinn comment. So what if she’s my favorite girl from the DC universe. But Raven is a close second so fuck you! Also, Palpy must be maulding rn. The Free Stars aren’t losing, they’re taking up all of the news and senate time, his planned war is getting ignored, the vale just doesn’t work around this random guy who’s absolutely out playing him, and his carefully planned spark-to-start-a-war is just not going to land. Next thing you’re going to tell him is that this Izuku character has a contingent of expert sith hunters already on his tail. But that would be crazy, right?

Daemonioros

You really are making me love Zavra as a character more and more. Just the profound effect she has on the Galactic developments is fun in general. That observation about Jedi in war is absolutely going to go from Zavra and Aayla to Shaak. And from her to the Jedi council. Who being a bit more intelligent and proactive here probably will see the wisdom of it. Especially if it was common knowledge back when Jedi were still involved in wars (Celeste can probably back this up too, as can people like Ood). If palpy can't have the Jedi be the face of the war (which would be much much harder if they weren't Jedi Generals but just Jedi leading essentially special forces teams) then his entire plan needs to be overhauled again.

TheZombieDoc

I NEED to know... is Bubbles a monkey? And will they be involved with containing a space pirate?

Filip Hejný

Nobody else has the power production capacity to effectively use them even if they steal the tech. Now depending on the range and the limitations on what exactly you and how can teleport I can see them fielding what is essentially portal platform boats that spit out warehouse load of torps per salvo or planetary scale rail gun rounds/ultra particle beams or whatever, logistics are basically won period. They can insert cloacked portal boat and invasion force has beachhead wherever you put it. This thing is paradigm shifting, you don't need other technology superiority when you can deploy cheap munitions on industrial scale in the battlespace. Heavy shields? Who cares if it takes ten thousand more torps, they are much cheaper than building a fleet.

Delphinous

you're not wrong, palpatine would need to spend some time catching up on the power front, but there must be some connection between the portals, and all it takes is for palpatines group to figure out how to jam/scramble it to disable the portals, or even worse to hack it and use it themselves. basically even if they don't have the power to match it, them understanding the tech would still let them reduce it's effectiveness

Novus's Fanfiction Works

lol, no :-p. Bubbles is Mei's nickname for Nikkila (the Mikkian they rescued from slavery and is now basically her chief minder).

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yep. The Jedi are going to have to play a balancing act, though. Given that the CIS has a Sith leading it. They'll be more aware of the issue and know that there IS a balance needed, though. I have plans for them that Palpy certainly isn't going to like ;-). As for others who can attest to the issue, Celeste probably can't, actually. She was basically raised by extremists and has little idea what normal Jedi of her period were like. Ood almost certainly CAN though. Likewise, if they actually do specifically looking for records of such, they are likely to find evidence of the problem in the holocron vault. My stance on canon is that they didn't even know it was a question that should be asked, and thus missed that they already had the answer.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm glad you like Zavra. Don't worry, I won't judge you about Harley either, she's one of my favorite characters in DC ;-). So is Raven, for that matter, so you have excellent taste as far as I'm concerned! I couldn't resist the Pull the Lever thing :-p. It just felt very 'Mei.' And yes, the Portal/Jump Gate tech is going to be one of the major edges in the long term. It won't have a huge effect on the Crusade, but it's going to be one of their major assets by the time of the Clone Wars. In order to make them a serious power, they need serious tech advantages against the MUCH larger numbers and greater industrial base of the Republic and CIS. So setting up those advantages in a way that feels worked for (instead of Deus Ex Machina) has been a large part of why I've trickled mentions of her working on it into the story. Palpatine IS getting more an more annoyed, yes. He also still doesn't see the Crusade as more than a short-term annoyance, though. Even if they win, he thinks they are a bit a sideshow because of relative scale. He's mostly concerned about them being able to repeat the Veil tearing effect, and doesn't yet realize that Izuku was involved in that. His logical assumption is that it was a group of all the Jedi that wandered that way. Which, to be fair, he's not even entirely wrong about, since a significant chunk of those involved were Jedi. Of course, he's wrong about a lot of things about them, but his lack of intelligence assets within the League is preventing him from realizing that they might be more dangerous than he currently suspects.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

So Palaptine is currently annoyed, but even if the Hutts lose he's not really 'banking' on anything with the Crusade. It would ANNOY him to have another player to worry about, but Hutt Space is relatively small compared to either the Republic or CIS. He's always been a 'crush them with numbers' sort, not a true military mind, so even the League winning isn't going to freak him out too much. It will annoy the heck out of him, though. It also SHOULD freak him out more, he just doesn't know that, as he lacks intelligence sources within the League. Increasing the Magazine capacity would SORT OF work, but only if they weren't using the Null Torpedoes, since those... ...already do something similar to your portal-on-the-end-of-a-torpedo idea. They open an unstable version of the reality-jump portal that Mei used to follow Izuku, and essentially drain a massive amount of shield energy by dumping it outside reality. Anything smaller than a heavy cruiser and that opens a temporary hole, through which the Graviton Beams can core a ship in almost the exact way you're imagining the portal doing. Larger capital ships, or ships with layered shields, can somewhat counter the combination. The actual portal idea with the gates Mei is making wouldn't work, since the portals are very stargate like, with a ring around them that would break on impact with the shields and just create a weaker version of what the Null Torpedoes already do.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Well...it depends on the right directions for whom :-p. In truth, some of them are falling in almost everyone's favor. It's just a matter of how much in each direction...

Delphinous

thats fair, but while the current configuration of a stargate style ring makes sense, whos' to say it couldn't be modified to be projected? i mean, lightsaber tech is basically already doing something similar with the psuedo-plasma. actually that might work better, instead of a constant portal effect, just basically turn the portal field into a single sort of linear burst, a thin stream/column/cylinder. it would have to be stable for more than a brief moment, and even if it didn't successfully teleport all the mater away it would still break the atomic connections. sort of like just rapidly rotating the portal emitters in the ring outwards and having the portal destabilize in a specific direction. i just like imagining sci-fi concepts like this so this is fun. but i'm enjoying the story and can't wait for the next segment

Novus's Fanfiction Works

You aren't wrong, but it's sort of pointless because of the existing Null Torpedo/Graviton Beam mix that most of their Capital Ships are already equipped with. That mix does essentially the same thing already, without the need to do R&D and production ramp up of an entirely new system. Particularly when there's no telling what encountering a shield would do to the delicate balance of energy in the portals. The most likely result would be that they would destabilize...resulting in EXACTLY the same effect as a Null Torpedo.

Mr Fox

Hey quick misspelling report I noticed you kept using boarder instead of border. Boarder refers to someone who is boarding a ship, plane or other vehicle also naval personnel who are in the process of seizing a ship. Border is for the boundaries of nations. You can probably find all of them by just word searching boarder.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ugh, thanks, that one of those that's hard to spot in editing. I've fixed the master file so it will get updated next release at the latest. Possibly sooner if enough other typos get spotted.

The Foreign Traveler

(Exasperated yet Empathetic Sigh) Padme… I don’t envy her. Having a good mix of ideals vs reality will ALWAYS be a challenging endeavor. The trick to it is finding a personal balance that you can accept and, more importantly, LIVE with. For both good and ill. I only wish you the best of both adaptivity and resolve young Queen… Anyway-! Here we go again Novus! Edit 1: …the Handmaidens “and” finally… …the Handmaidens “had” finally… Edit 2: Still, “all of those musing aside”… Still, “all musing aside”… Edit 3: “In” was an expensive… “It” was an expensive… Edit 4: …they were returning “too.” …they were returning “to.” Edit 5: …spoke and gave Asajj “and” actual… …spoke and gave Asajj “an” actual… Edit 6: …making of “very last pilot”… …making of “every last pilot”…

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yeah, poor Padmé is stuck in a universe where the best of ideals doesn't really...hold up well. Not if she's forced outside the bubble of a affluent and peaceful world. Like someone from Sweden being force to try and confront/tackle the problems in Warlord-Controlled parts of Africa. She DID volunteer herself to try and fix those sorts of problems by becoming part of the senate and taking her job seriously though. As always, thanks for the typo fixes! I'll get them into the Master File for the next update!
