Alright folks, this one is a bit shorter than it should have been. Why? Because for some reason the whole thing fought me like an angry hippopotamus that devoured it's body weight from a poacher's cocaine stash. I'm seriously not sure I've ever had one of my story arcs fight me as much as this one did, to the point that I entirely scrapped some of my original plans for it. The Shiki fight, in particular, I ended up skipping a lot of. To compensate, I decided to give short snapshots of others who we don't see fighting as often, which showcases their current growth levels just a bit. People like Usopp and Sanji, for example. I think it ended up turning out okay, but it's one of the very rare times I'm a good 1,000-1,500 words short of the usual goal for the month.

On the flip side, I got so frustrated with it that I had to set it down and work on something else, and I might post a snippet of that random other story concept as compensation in a few days. Assuming I have time to clean it up :-p. It's nothing that's going to become a major story, since it violates my rule against writing two fics in the same universe at the same time. Well, unless it proves popular enough for me to replace Eridium Dreams with it, since it's a Mass Effect concept. Eh, enough about that though, you came for Halfway Broken!

Despite how much it fought me, I am reasonably pleased with the end result, so enjoy the rest of the Merville Arc! As usual, the new stuff is attached here in various formats, and I'll be posting new Master Files in the Pinned Post. I'll also put author's notes in the comments below when I have time. Enjoy the release!

*Note: Art is Shiki's official Anime appearance. It doesn't quite match the story description, since I blended his anime and manga versions together. But it's close enough.

Chapter 83: A/N 1: Explosives, the great equalizer... A/N 2: Scarlet (the Pervert Gorilla) received a slight upgrade in order to actually be a worthwhile opponent. Specifically, he gained the Suke Suke no Mi, with Absalom having died on Thriller Bark, Shiki happened to acquire it. A/N 3: Sanji and Usopp faced two characters from the Amigo Pirates, an anime-only tie in for the Strong World movie, I think. I really just took their basic details from the Wiki, having not actually seen that particular tie-in arc myself. A/N 4: "Mori Mori Dis Nuts" is entirely the fault of TheAzureJumper over on Questionable Questing, who came up with that attack name right after I introduced Dis. It cracked me up enough that I couldn't help but use it at least once... A/N 5: Dis officially has her full compliment of Devil Fruits! As it happens, the Float Float Fruit was almost the entirety of the reason I wanted them to take on Shiki at all. Not only does it canonically allow ships to fly, but it has a lot of other potentially valuable uses for Dis, both in her ship form and her 'Dryad/Nymph' form.

WhatAFungi

Okay, Dis has turned into a monster, and I’m loving it! Similarly, could the Desert princess make doors underwater? Because there’s a lot of shinnanignas to be had with water pressure, let alone just to fact that instantly dumping sea water on the heads of any fruit user would be a little broken (half way broken, one could say) Unrelated, have you guys seen the new Demon Slayer movie?!?! That shit was so epic!!! It’s a must-see-in-theatres in my opinion. Great chapters! Can’t wait for more!

Orchamus

Sad that Luffy and Yamato got out skilled, but Shiki did fight a younger Garp and Sengoku together. Also dammit Ussop😂

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Hmmm, I hadn't actually consider that. I want to say 'no' though, given how Devil Fruit's interact with water negatively in general. At least, with Ocean Water. I could see her being able to open one under a waterfall she knew the location of...or if Nami used the more esoteric parts I gave the Pegasus Fruit to create a High Pressure Sprint (effectively a geyser)? I could see those working. It might well be an interesting attack option for her in the future, to be developed during the Training Arc. Thanks for the idea ;-). Hmmm, for that matter a lot of the 'fun with portals' type ideas could apply to her. Like using two of her doors to accelerate something large to terminal velocity...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yep. That was part of why I struggled with the fight. Either I had to depict an epic seesaw and brutally tense slugging match that they barely got through. Something which would have been really hard since combat in general is difficult for me to write. Or else I had to give them ways to generate an edge. Originally, that was supposed to be the SIQ Monsters and such, but I couldn't make it work right. So I didn't show most of their fight, then let Dis show off as a completely unexpected resolution :-p.

Matthew Robar

I can’t believe you Deez nutted, it was so well executed I can’t even be mad

Brilliant! Makes sense that the railgun were the ones to actually put Shiki down, Luffy and Yamato probably would not have managed to kill him without Luffy gambling with his awakened form at their current power levels. Will probably motivate both of them further to get stronger as well, since this Luffy isn't one to like having to rely on luck or outside sources to win. Loved Luffy's Sonic Pulse attack btw, it's nice to see the sound aspect of his DF be utilised more, further developing that should help him further increase his DF mastery. Along with an eventual personalised Railgun attack of course ;) Dis getting the Float paramecia is a given, but glad its finally happened. Luffy truly was shameless in getting the fruit though haha there is NO WAY the crew isn't suspicious... Ahhhh they have such a legendary ship! Can she use her fruit powers in her spirit form? If so, she has two logias and an OP paramecia... Shit that's insane. I'm curious as to whether you'll make use of the SIQ drug somehow, Kaya seemed interested in it, so it's possible she will find some way to twist it into another power-up for Usopp xD! Zoro and Sanji having their Enies Lobby power-ups displayed was nice (Zoro's is even enhanced with haki which makes it way scarier than in canon pre-timeskip). I liked Kuina's spirit attack too. Brook's power-up makes sense, and I really enjoy how you are developing his spiritual abilities! Once he learns how to wield the 'Chill of the underworld' during the training arc, perhaps he could also learn to wield the 'Heat of Hell' so he can use both fire and ice in this AU? Perona should also be able to help him extend his soul outside of his body, and with his increased spiritual manipulation, he might even be able to physically hold things in that state! Usopp's guns and general badassery make me giddy! So glad that the stupid 'weakling trio' schtick isn't a thing in your AU, looking forward to how you will make him able to hold his own against world-class snipers such as Yasopp and Van Augur. (No clue how Oda will make that possible in canon, he's made him into such a joke that he would only be able to win those fights with ass-pulls...) Btw, him learning Nojiko's CQC Rifle Style would mitigate his close combat weakness! Robin with Armament Haki is delicious, still salty that we don't have that yet, and might never (unless her Demon form is an armament haki manifestation but I don't think that's the correct explanation). Don't know if you will ever have her learn Fishman Karate, but that is one of her canon power-ups that I enjoyed. She could either learn from Jimbe eventually, or perhaps figure out the palm strikes on her own. They only incorporate the fundamentals of Fishman Karate into her usual style after all, so learning how to increase the pinpoint power of her strikes on her own isn't out of the question. She doesn't even have to use Fishman Karate fundamentals, since other martial arts have similar techniques. Her reverse engineering Hasshoken if they ever visit Kano Country in West Blue would be even better! Robin with Hasshoken would be soooooo badass. Her learning all 6 of the Rokushiki from Hina would also be amazing, since she could benefit from all of them a lot more than the others thanks to her body centered devil fruit, and Robin eventually using the Rokuogan would be incredible. Btw, for Chopper's power-up I actually like his Kung-Fu form if you make it more athletic. Here's an example I found: https://www.deviantart.com/garth2the2ndpower/art/Kung-Fu-Reindeer-196819652. It can actually be a great main combat form. But please don't make him lose his Arm point and Jump point! They are great forms for specific needs. And I also don't see why Chopper would be restricted to 7 forms and mysteriously lose one every time he figures out another. (I don't think he actually lost them in canon tbh, I just think Oda doesn't ever make Chopper use them post-timeskip.) Kaya and Luffy can also gradually help him extend the effect of the Rumble ball from the original 3 minutes to at least the 30 minutes Chopper and Caesar managed in canon. Once Chopper gains some degree of control over his monster point, that will be a great advantage entering the New World! Still dubious concerning Perona, I really don't see how she is of any use for the crew. Her role as a lookout is useless since Robin is much more effective. Her only use would be as a combatant but that's really not her style since she's a scaredy cat. Plus I find her very uninteresting. To me, she's just an additional female crew member people wanted you to include because they find her hot. Sorry for the negative point, just wanted you to know my current thoughts on her, although I know that you will probably work on those points during the time skip to make her fit in with the crew better. For example, I kind of like Pagaya now, even if I still would have preferred someone like Kamakiri as explained in a previous comment. The fact that you sort of managed to make me like a 52 year old man being on the Strawhat crew despite the longevity issues as a crewmember is impressive! Looking forward to seeing their visits to their home islands for a little R&R before serious training begins. Will training begin in next month's release?

Ototsu_Yume

Pretty sure he's gone and made the equivalent of an ancient weapon like Pluton now with how insane that devil fruit combo on Discovery is, I can see the WG wanting to take him out even harder now out of sheer jealousy lol. Thanks a lot for writing. :)

nasapeepolover116

Ahh yes the greatest weapons on the sea pluton, poseidon, Uranus and obviously the greatest of all the discovery

WhatAFungi

While the infinite fall “glitch” would be cool. How about just putting a door in front of the barrel for the rail gun and an enemy next to the other portal. Literal point blank rain gun shot. “Did anyone order up some human paste?”

Anren

So now we can officially congratulate our team on destroying an entire island (group of islands?) or does the murder count against Discovery, like the one who killed Shiki?)

BPellet

Huh Nami's fishman hate has me worried for when Jinbe eventually joins the crew, hopefully she works out more of it on acceptable targets and her love of pyromania. Can't wait for the groups training arc too since it seems the crew is just waiting on that last step to be New World ready. Thank you for the chapter!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm honestly not sure what's going to happen with that. The fact she just ignored that it was Jinbe who enabled Arlong in canon has always confused me.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Well, I'm not sure you can murder an island? Though it would likely be Shiki's fault either way, since he's the one that floated the islands, basically making them deadman's switches.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

And the funniest part is they have no idea, since they've never actually fought the Discovery :-p.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm intending to have him use his DF more in general now. Before most of the reason he was sticking to pure lightning most of the time was out of a desire for the WG not to realize what Fruit he has :-). Dis can use them from her spirit/golem body, yes. Though she can't leave the ship with that body. So anyone that attacks them aboard ship or out to see is going to have a VERY BAD day, but their more normal type of combat on islands won't really be affected. Kaya won't use SIQ itself, since it induces berserk rage. She might learn quite a bit from the information the locals gave her on the IQ plant, though. The 'weakling trio' always annoyed me. If you're going to be on the crew of the Pirate King, train properly and Get Gud, as they say these days. Hmmm, not familiar with Hasshoken, I'll have to look that up. Hina most likely doesn't know the Rokuogan or Shigan. Those two abilities seem to have been reserved pure for Cipher Pol, as the Shigan is an assassination technique, and you need to know it for Rokuogan. Chopper won't be losing any forms. He'll also be getting some general upgrades. There's absolutely no reason he shouldn't have been capable of learning things like Geppo and Soru, for example. Perona was honestly an unexpected addition, as she sort of wrote herself onto the crew when I did the Thriller Bark bit. I wasn't originally expecting to keep her at all, as she wasn't voted into the pairing. Reading her past and imagining how Moria actually dying would affect her result in her shift, though. We haven't seen much of that yet, since shortly after that they dove into the ramp up for the Marineford conflict. During the training arc, we'll see Perona's personality slowly shifting. Most of the next month will likely be R&R and revisiting their home island, but they'll at least discuss their plans for where they want to go and what they want to learn.

Luffy limiting his devil fruit makes a lot of sense, it would be stupid for him not to until now so I completely understand. Dis being an OP bodyguard for herself is great since the ship won't need to be as heavily guarded in the future, freeing up crew members for other tasks! Holy shit I just realised that Chopper might be able to use the IQ plant! Being able to maintain the effect of brain point in any form would be so cool... Hasshoken is what Sai (from the Strawhat Grand Fleet) and his family use. It is a martial art that allows the user to control the vibrations of the whole body, allowing them to create powerful shock waves that cause defences to shatter and cause internal damage. This technique can be used on any part of the user's body, or even the whole body at once (explanation found on the One Piece Wiki). I just thought that it could be a perfect fit for a Robin power-up, without bringing the Fishmen into it. It's a secret martial art though, but if Robin sees it then maybe she could be smart enough to realise how they do it. Or perhaps Luffy or Yamato can and then they can teach it to her, since their combat comprehension is probably higher. Concerning Hina, in chapter 39, page 280 of the PDF Master file, you stated that "Hina knew all 6 of the primary Rokushiki". This would mean that she also knows Shigan. The only ones she wouldn't know is Rokuogan (Lucci is the only one we know for sure can do it canonically), and any Rokushiki variations of the primary 6. If that is not true and she doesn't in fact know Shigan, then she doesn't know all 6. But honestly Shigan is pretty self explanatory and should be pretty easy to reverse engineer (even if arm, hand and finger muscles have to be really strong to be successful). Tekkai and especially Kami-e are the only ones that are difficult to reverse engineer. I'll wait patiently for Perona, it makes sense that Moria dying could cause a shift in her outlook. I have no doubt you will do a great job slowly shifting her personality to fit :) Thank you very much for the update!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yep. Even in Paradise, if the WG found out someone had a Mythical Zoan, they'd hunt them like crazy. Let alone back when he was in the East Blue. So he concealed it until they were going to be after him anyway... Also yep! Part of why I wanted Dis to exist, even before I came up with the more physical body due tot he Mori Mori no Mi, was so that the ship can look after itself. Something that always bothered me in canon was how often they left the Merry and Sunny both completely unguarded. Basically only author fiat kept their ships from being stolen every other Arc... The IQ plant influences evolution, rather than boosting IQ as the name suggests. That said, yes it will be useful to him in refining his own medicines. The Rumble Ball in particular will benefit massively from unlocking it's secrets. His various forms are, after all, essentially divergent evolutions in a way. Eh, Hina 'knowing' all six is more a case that she technically knows how they all work. If she's actually developed them to usability or not? Probably all of them buy the Shigan, but to various levels of skill.

BPellet

I'm pretty sure Jinbe actually didn't know what Arlong was up to in the East Blue. JInbe's deal to become a warlord was for all Sun pirates to be released, but I think Arlong was bribing that rat marine to not report his actions. I'm sure some people even with the bribe were aware of Arlong's actions but I think Jinbe wasn't one of those ever aware, plus if Jinbe did know I personally feel like he would've stopped Arlong himself.

Mike

When we begin the training arc can we gloss it over and show other POV instead. Want to see how the divergences are creating new setups. Fallout from Doflamingo death, Elder death. Kaidou learning where Yamato went(Fallout). Boa Hancock role going forward. Sanji’s family plans.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yeah, no. That's not going to happen. I've stated repeatedly that I'm going to actually cover the training arc, with them visiting both some familiar islands and some originals. That NEEDS to happen, since the condensed timeframe of the rest of One Piece means that isn't a lot of time for crew interaction and interpersonal developments. A lot of that will be covered during the 'time skip,' which won't be all training by any means. That said, I will ALSO be covering other perspectives, as I have all along, showing snippets of how the world is changing. Garp's perspective will be particularly important, as he'll have a few of the entire world stage that no one else short of the Elders do.

The Foreign Traveler

I LAUGHED SO hard when Dis said that just before Shiki went bye-bye! Edit 1: …assumption that Shiki “new Haki… …assumption that Shiki “knew” Haki… Edit 2: “…as Snanji’s” jealousy… “…at Sanji’s” jealousy…

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Glad you got a kick out of Dis's moment :-p. I admit, I laughed hard enough when someone on Questionable Questing suggested the attack name that I went out of my way to include it at least the once ;-). Thanks for the edits, I've got these and the ones from the other Halfway Broken release you marked corrected for the new Master File that I'm about to release :-).
