It's here! On time, despite the snap poll ;-). For those only sorta paying attention, I shut that poll down early morning on the 7th, and the winner (Kara) only ended up showing up at the tail end of this update. So it worked out that I didn't need any sort of delay to get this out on time. At full length too, coming in at just over 15k.

I'm mostly happy with the results. There was a little bit too much time spent in characters' heads or doing exposition for me to be happy with entirely, but that's sort of just what needed to happen in this bit of the fic. They are in build up phase and I've deliberately kept the number of 'named' characters Rylia is interacting with down, since I know that list is doing to build to be ever more unwieldly as the story progresses and she summons more 'Help.' Meaning there currently just aren't a lot of people for her to interact with, if I don't want to complicate my life a ton later. That should change in the next update with both Kara and...one other you should be able to guess at after reading these chapters ;-).

I've included a map with the post this time, as relative locations of a few planets and bits of space are referenced in story. Likewise, I looked around for a version of Kara that's similar to what I was/am imagining, which is the other post image ;-). This Kara is a bit older than the teenage version we see most often, and not a front-line fighter. So I felt any of her traditional costumes/appearances didn't quite fit.

As usual, the new chapters are attached here in various formats, and the new Master Files, containing the entire story, will be up in the Pinned Post shortly. I'll also be doing some Author's Notes for the chapters after I get that done. You'll be able to find them in the comments, also as usual, though give it a bit so I can actually write them :-p. Enjoy more of Stripper With a System, everyone!

Chapter 10 A/N 1: A bit of a view into Momo's headspace, which I felt we were due for. Particularly as it helps address the loaded question of 'will she bail out before the Reapers even arrive,' given only having a 5-year contract length.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 11 A/N 1: Something that came up in Halfway Broken when I first introduced the Karma System was how knowing about it would affect earning it. It honestly wasn't really important to that story, with even that version of Luffy being very much 'I will do what I want, not what some numbers tell me to do' sort of personality. I figured in this fic it made a bit more sense to explore the concept though. Hence Rylia being a bit scientific about it and figuring out the formula somewhat. While still making that formula something that CAN'T be fully cheated, as she needs to be invested in what she's doing for more than just selfish reasons.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 12 A/N 1: As much as I've made Rylia a happy go lucky sort, and she'll REMAIN that way, the sheer weight of her situation demanded an eventual crash for realism sake. Don't worry, she's not the type to angst for long or very often. It just can't be a smooth ride ALL the time, or it wouldn't be much of a story ;-).

Chapter 13 A/N 1: Moving the relationship into an actual relationship, rather than just lemons :-p.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 14 A/N 1: Kara very obviously won the snap poll I ran, taking away nearly 50% of the total vote. A few quick notes on her that didn't make it into the fic yet. 1) This Kara is in her late twenties, looking a bit younger than that because she hasn't lost her Kryptonian genetic engineering just because of no yellow sun powers. She has a multi-century lifespan and slowed aging past maturity as a result. 2) She's taller than most versions of Kara (excluding the Power Girl versions), on account of being fully developed, not a teenager. 3) This version of her is very much a Kryptonian, not a slightly exotic earthling. Meaning different culture values, better education, genetic advantages, and less Justice League koolaid drinking.

Daemonioros

So Kara took Luthor out and the Justice league took it badly. Yeah that feels on brand. Really was always kind of surprised that the more realistic members of the league didnt get rid of people like luthor through assasination.

Carac

I have an nomination for a future character as the commander of Rylia's PMC. If you want to conquer a Pirate infested sh#thole of a sector of space and fight a bio-synthetic eldritch abomination, you need a guy with experience, charisma and balls so massive you need a dreadnought for each. Lady's, Gentlemen and Cylon I introduce you to Rear Admiral William Adama from Battlestar Galactica

WhatAFungi

Great chapters! Cant wait for more!

Orchamus

Good that Momo is adjust ng better and better. She was always a very competent character sidelined by her lack of punch good. That Kara comes along and adds to the group just made it his even better. That she DEALT with a lot of Super problems ought to make some of the ME weird shit easier. Tftc

Novus's Fanfiction Works

An unfortunate difference between Marvel and DC. Marvel has a lot of heroes willing to properly finish off their enemies. DC, for whatever reason, is heavily loaded down with 'No Killing' policy heroes. Batman and Superman being two of them, and arguably being the two primary heads of most versions of the JL, only makes things worse.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Unfortunately, Battlestar Galactica is one of the new major Sci-fi series I've never gotten around to watching :-(. So I have no idea who that is...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*nods seriously* Justice for Momo, for canon gave her none. And yes, part of why I put that into her background was/is to create a version of her that wouldn't balk at Rylia's plan. Of course, since Rylia was able to pick from hundreds of Kara's, she chose one that wouldn't immediately protest the idea of killing people. So long as there was/is a good, properly justice-oriented, reason for doing so.

WhatAFungi

Could the MC and gang purchase I shitty spaceship from the system, clean it up and upgrade the systems with ME tech and then resell it for higher value? Essentially do some system flipping for store credit?

twilightwanderer

Good update, I liked the character development, and especially how well you captured just how overwhelming the situation is. I also loved Momo noticing Rylia spiraling and taking action, and their interactions were adorable. Also also, I'm looking forward to Miranda's first appearance and subsequent confusion ;P. Finally, I like this take on Kara and it's good to see her already taking notes and coming up with things to contribute. (trying a new approach to my standard doorstopper responses)

twilightwanderer

Now on to potential future purchases. First off, staying in Star Wars, if Rylia really wants to own the digital warfare space (without buying Cortana or a similar companion), she could check prices on a Positronic Processor. Short of directly challenging a significant fraction of the Geth Consensus or trying to override a Reaper in its body, I don't see much in ME that could stand up against one, and there's enough going on to keep one interested.

twilightwanderer

Next, a new universe with a lot to pull from technologically is Stargate. Even just the things Earth had access to by the end would be major game changers: Naquadah generators for power, plasma beam weapons, Asgard shields, and especially the Asgard hyperdrive, which even at the most basic could make trans-galactic trips in a matter of weeks at the most (without needing pre-mapped hyper-lanes like SW hyperdrives), and in the more advanced form with enough power behind them could travel to other galaxies in the local cluster in a day or so max. It keeps going from there: Tollan ion cannons, Asgard transporters, and definitely the Ancient tech like ZPMs, drone weapons, and the gate network (although I'm sure all of those will come with a concurrently high cost).

twilightwanderer

On the topic of Stargate, while not necessarily an immediate pick, Brigadier General Samantha Carter would make an excellent military advisor/commander. She's an astrophysics and engineering genius, career military, ace pilot, extensive special operations experience as part of SG-1, a proven commander of warships, bases, and a full blended civilian/military expedition, quite experienced in both cooperating with and combatting diverse alien species and civilizations, and about as moral as can reasonably be expected of a flag rank career military officer.

twilightwanderer

Finally, while Babs is an excellent pick, and could certainly be written to have more flexible morals around the more violent side of black ops (and given Kara's POV in the last chapter, some potentially juicy character drama), I wanted to toss out a more obscure alternative: Aleph from Global Frequency. While nowhere near as physically capable as a Batgirl, or as skilled in fieldwork or individual investigation, Aleph at base is much more comfortable in the grey zones of clandestine operations, while still remaining committed to improving the world through her work. Possessing super-human capacity for information processing, Aleph is capable of coordinating largescale operations, identifying necessary skillsets in the moment, and maintaining a clear flow of information across a global network of agents. I see this as Aleph's biggest advantage over Barbara: Babs is used to working with a small dedicated group while providing more intermittent support to a loose network of allies and associates who are largely doing their own thing; meanwhile Aleph's MO is activating specialists from around the world at a moment's notice and coordinating responses to emergent crises. As such, I see Aleph as being more able to run an active galactic network focused on a few clear objectives. Again, Babs is a fine pick and a strong candidate, but I wanted to pitch my obscure blorbo anyway. (speaking of Warren Ellis comics, once Rylia has more purchasing power and it's time to actually fight the Reapers, Jenny Sparks and Angela Spica/The Engineer would both be exceptional purchases, both could solo a Reaper and both have strong additional skillsets)

critical knowledge gap

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I appreciate the feedback way more than doorstopper responses, so thanks :-p. I'm glad you liked the direction the chapters took! Huh, that positronic processor is a good find. I wasn't familiar with that particular bit of Star Wars tech, going to have to remember it, thanks! Not sure who well it would stand up to Reapers, since they are...weird and not quite entirely straight up tech (since indoctrination copies a biological process from their progenitor species). It would almost certainly work to some degree on Geth, though. Probably not the whole Collective, as any Geth not on the same platform would notice something wrong. But on individual servers of them, almost certainly...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

A lot of the Star Gate tech is too high above the ME tech level and would fall into the same Marketplace cost limiter as Star Trek tech. Most of the lower tier stuff requires Naquada, which she'd have to purchase in bulk from the Marketplace. Not a great sustainable option. There are individual pieces that might work from STG though.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm afraid up until I read your comment, that I've never even heard of Global Frequency... There will likely be other options besides Barbara and Guri though. The previous snap poll suffered from having multiple types of specialists in it. The next poll will likely have 4-5 pure shadow operations experts in it.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Technically? Absolutely yes. Practically? There's no reason since they could just sell the ME tech to the system for pretty much the same value.

Hyperion

Thanks for the chapters. Finally bit the bullet and read this. Much better than I was expecting. Just wondering, but where does the line for "help" appear when it comes to droids? Do droids always count as objects? Or do some droids (like HK47 or IG88) count as "help"?

twilightwanderer

Fair enough on the Stargate tech level, all the reasons it'd work so well are also reasons to limit access to it. As for Global Frequency, I highly recommend it, and it's a fairly short read, only 12 issues. Now I'm wondering who else will be in the next poll: I'm guessing Kusanagi (if only because of Truck), maybe a Natasha Romanov that took more of a command route or a Maria Hill that didn't go off the deep end? I'm curious to see how it pans out.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm a little surprised you were willing to try it, given you're not a lemon fan ;-). I'm glad you liked it despite them! So, the droid thing is actually something I've considered. Essentially, the split occurs when a droid crosses the line from sentient to sapient, as it were. Fresh droids will always be objects. Droids that have gone long enough without a memory wipe to build serious sapience (like R2 or HK47) would count as 'Help.'

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Good guesses :-p. I haven't finalized the list yes, but Motoko Kusanagi and Natasha Romanov are both on the shortlist of possible options. I'm a little uncertain if either of them will make the final list, as neither are perfect fits. But versions of them are on the rough shortlist I've come up with so far.

2026-09-08 02:00 Hmmm. Kara is nice, she was definitely my second pick. I do love how she just straight up executed luthor, very deserved. I am somewhat curious why she hasn’t started laying the groundwork to dig up javik on Eden? If only for the easy access to mass effect based particle beam technology? Javik himself doesn’t really bring much to the table outside of a tactical level unless she can pull someone in that can restore the dead, but if she could do that it isn’t like she would need any of them to begin with? Scout probes looking for wrecked ships to salvage is a good idea tho

Novus's Fanfiction Works

She's afraid of triggering the events of Mass Effect 1 early if she touches Eden's Prime. Up until the Alliance dug up the Beacon, Nazara was forced to wait. It needed a beacon, beyond the one at Virmire, and didn't know where any functional ones were. The moment the Alliance dug up the beacon on Eden's Prime, it kicked off Nazara's actions. Rylia doesn't know if the Reaper is already ready enough that, if the ruins on Eden Prime are discovered, it will kick things off early. In all honesty, she'll probably actively try to delay those ruins being found, in the hope that doing so will put off the start of the count down timer longer.

It was interesting, but there are two points that I would like to mention. First: I seriously miss the POV from the other characters. I had a scene of the classic Citadel council in my head when I read about the advertisement for the 3rd toy created in the image of a Prothean trap. Secondly, we need more descriptions of her inventions in the field of entertainment, as well as her stream channels :) And written not so much from her side, but from the audience... and for example, human experts listening to her analysis of culture and technology, while trying from time to time to fend off jokes and claims that they watch porn in the workplace :)
