Reminders! Both the Monthly Story Poll for June and the VERY IMPORTANT Poll regarding changes to this Patreon, are still running. Both will close in just a few days, please make sure to vote! Particularly in the VERY IMPORTANT one, which is open to all.

Okay, with that set of reminders out of the way...cue Star Wars intro!

Intro Crawl

Right! There's...honestly a lot to talk about with this one, but most of it would be spoilery. There will be a longer than usual set of comments from me in, well...the comments section. Where I can assume that (hopefully), you'll have read the chapters before I cover everything :-p.

That said, a couple of up front things!

First, you'll notice that there are extra files attached this time. Two of them are the maps also used as the post images, which cover the results of the chapters compared to original canon. I suggest you not look at them too closely before reading the chapters. But they aren't honestly that big of spoilers in and of themselves, hence not hesitating to use them as the post images. I'll talk about them in more detail in the comments section. The other file is a breakdown of fleet assets belonging to the League/CIS/Republic. It isn't even close to fully compressive. But it gives at least some context for relative strength.

Second, a warning that there is a lot more exposition in these two extra-large chapters than I normally use. The reason for that is simple. These two chapters are for Stage Setting. They are meant to show a wide view of the opening act of the war. To establish who the major players are, where the war fronts are located, and who has what major pieces on the board. It even helps outline some of the major player's goals and how those differ from the canon Clone Wars.

I think I managed to make it fairly interesting by not getting into the nitty gritty in any one place and hopping through a bunch of perspectives. But either way, it needed doing because of just how massive the accumulated changes to the timeline have become and how much they've altered near enough everything.

Alright folks, I have a lot more to say, but I'll take that to the comments so its less easy to stumble into spoilers. So, for now, enjoy more Displaced Hero! As usual, the new bits are attached to this post and I'll update the Master Files in the Master Story Threads post shortly.

This Comment is for Discussion on the Galaxy Map and Territories controlled by the various powers! Soooo. First thing first. The territories shown on the map I created for Displaced Hero ware Areas of Influence, not areas of complete control. This, in part, is why the League looks as large as it does. No, it doesn't actually have as many member worlds as the map implies. Even with the new wave of worlds rushing to them, they only control perhaps 4,000-5,000 worlds that 'matter.' As in, ones that have more than a single outpost or mining operation. The same is actually true for the CIS, they haven't actually solidified control of all the worlds in the space highlighted for them, though they control a much higher number of total worlds (60,000+). The map mostly shows who is in control of which REGION of space. As in, who holds the major hyperlanes and controls trade and such within the areas highlighted. Plus, of course, showing the handful of world/locations that the Jedi Order is set up in...minus one. I'm not giving away where there mobile Brighthome Station academy is hiding out :-p. Aside from that, there are a few other interesting points to note. One is the lack of gap between two CIS holding areas in the galactic north. The original reason for that in canon is that the region between those two areas is...former Sith Space. Very few people live there, as the whole region was pretty much quarantined to prevent all the ancient evils, Sith Ghosts, and other shit from spilling out. Obviously, with Palpatine being outted, he doesn't give a shit about optics regarding that region of space and has simply taken it back wholesale. Even in canon, he had the CIS set up a base on Korriban, so this isn't a truly major departure, but it alters the strategic situation a fair bit. Other points to note is that Kamino is essentially in LEAGUE space. Mandelore HAS been outright taken over by the CIS, so Satine is either dead or on the run, and the CIS is busy looting Beskar from everywhere they can. I admittedly...SLIGHTLY moved Space City, for anyone that tries to find its map coords on Wookiepedia. It's not quite where it was in the EU, though it isn't far off either. I needed it to not be too deeply inside CIS space, since it's the Jedi's largest fleet base. There's...probably more I'm forgetting? Feel free to ask questions! If they aren't too spoilery, I'll try to answer!

Army Sizes! So, I wish I could have made another document to break down ground forces...but that would be a MUCH bigger ask than the Fleet Document. Even the Fleet Document took a couple of days, and the Ground Forces are FAR more diverse. However, I wanted to give some basic numbers here in total current troop strength. Note, this is MAIN forces only, not including any given planet's defense forces. The CIS: 5 BILLION battle droids. Yes, the vast majority of those are B1s, and fully half of that number is dedicated to defense. Yet a solid 2 Billion of them are just on the Lucrehulks, though. Meaning they can be potentially used for invasions. Nor am I counting vehicles, tanks, or Vultures. The GAR: 400 Million ground troops already ready and deploying. 300 more in production to be delivered within a year. Another 5 million or so completely regular personnel that are crewing starships that were in hiding. Another 50 million or so of support or combat personnel from the Judicial Forces and Fleets. The League: Sentient Troops - 25 million. Droids - 375 million. With access to far more people to recruit after taking Hutt Space, their average sentient to droid mix as shifted to 1 to 15 instead of the 1 to 20 it was during the Crusade. They were expanding at every point during the Crusade and even more afterward. At the START of the Hutt Crusade, they barely had 2 million sentients in their military. If that. The Jedi: Actual Jedi - 20,000ish. Force Sensitives who aren't Jedi - 35,000. Army of Light personnel - 750,000.

Does anyone remember the revitalization of the military depots Palpatine did? Because he sure must be mad that he made the Republic stronger only to have his work turned on him like that. In all seriousness, the Republic is going to have a vastly more motivated populace when it comes to fighting the CIS after what Palpatine did to the Senate. I have no idea how you'll do the demographics of the various ecumenopoli in Star Wars, but the no matter what, industry should be the bottleneck, not population when it comes to this war. Of course, getting trainers for that population will be another matter. Of course, the navy is the more important branch here for the war, but a long war favors the Republic considering the massive concentration of core world industry. As an aside, I've never liked the 25,000 number of Star Destroyers in the context of Palpatine's regime. It sounds great on paper, until you realize that the Empire likely has a larger number of important planets, some of which are former CIS worlds than it does cruisers. And considering the fact that Kuat should be capable (assuming the planetary ring is in geostationary orbit) of getting out at least 10,000 ships the size of an SD at the same time (and that would only take up about a third of the ring in terms of space, assuming 5km berths), the fleet size actually seems pretty modest when planets like Corelia, Fonder, Empress Teta, and Alsakan are around, especially for someone like Palpatine. That is, the fleet size seems pretty modest until you consider the Death Star. That's where all the industrial capacity went. Seriously, you could have build several hundred thousand Star Destroyers with the resources that went into the Death Star. Suddenly, Palpatine's lack of an over bloated navy makes a bit more sense. Also, how did no one figure out that a megaproject like the Death Star was being built until over a decade into its construction with the sheer industry needed to make it? That's got to be one of the biggest plot holes in Star Wars, hands down.

These chapters were really good I just wish that you had gotten at least one more in.

Donan The Barbarian

Alright so I'm still reading the current release but I REALLY love what you've done with Count Dooku!

Delphinous

this reminds me a lot of the American Civil War, where the south had the initial initiative, the better starting army, and the better initial leadership, but the north had the manufacturing and population to outgrow and eventually overwhelm the south. it's not a perfect parallel, but there are similarities

Delphinous

plus he had a second death star also being produced at a small delay and slightly slower pace. the only real justification i can come up with is that the rebellion was aware that there was a discrepancy in the material being produced and the visible ships they were seeing, and so were trying to find the hidden fleets, and failing to do so becuase there weren't hidden fleets, and then eventually stumbled on the death star plans. and since they weren't looking for a more centralized project like the death star they missed it for a while

Delphinous

i really like how dooku is developing, and honestly, it would be really satisfying if he successfully overthrows sideous and then tries to run the CIS like a real military. in a lot of ways he's basically becoming Revan 2.0

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I suppose I can see the Revan parallels yes, though I hadn't thought of it that way :-). I've glad people seem to like the direction I'm going with him.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Honestly, I'd hoped to get a third one in too, but in order to cover everything that needed covering, these ended up being longer than expected.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

A lot of the people he put in at the Ord systems were loyal to him, so less of a roadblock than it could have been, but yes he's very annoyed that he strengthened the Republic position :-p. Yes, the problem the Sith always had was exactly that. They couldn't conquer planets fast enough to overcome the population and industry the Republic could eventually bring to bear. The real bottleneck is going to be in training, particularly officers. But the Republic DID get a bit of a jump start on that because of Padmé's maneuvering with the Military Creation Act bill. I actually think the 25,000 number is fairly reasonable. Remember, that's 25,000 Imperial-class Star Destroyers. Essentially, Battlecruisers by the terms I'm using. The vast, vast majority of worlds do no need a Battlecruiser to defend them. Only critical systems or Core World would demand that much fire power, with the rest being able to make due with things like Strike Cruisers and Nebula-B Frigates. Of which there were doubtless hundreds of thousands due to being cheaper to make.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I suppose I can see the similarities yes. Though it certainly doesn't hold up completely, as the CIS largely has the tech edge over the Republic. Though the League has the edge there over both.

Mr Fox

You stated the answer. Palpatine hid the death star in the plot holes. No but seriously it actually would have been pretty easy to hide the death star. Not to hide that the empire had some project that required a lot of industrial capacity no but to hide the actual project and what it is yes. You have to remember how big and empty space is and that even for the star wars universe there are dozens of empty star systems for every one inhabited system. They ciuld have picked a random star uninhabited system to build it in and no one would have found it or even better an empty plot of space a few light hours from a handy star. As far as following the actual flow of industry thats just a matter of staging it through security checkpoints before actually sending it on to the death star.

twilightwanderer

I like how this is starting out so far, plenty of chaos but also some successes for all sides. I especially like this take on Dooku, and I'm excited to see him develop. I'm also look forward to seeing the politics start playing out between the League and the Republic, as well as within the Confederacy (some of whom might be experiencing some buyers remorse about their leadership).

Matthew Robar

I feel like you need to up the casualty estimations for the initial coruscant sabotage by at least 10x, 70,000 is kinda low. the Abraj Al Bait Towers complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia can hold 65,000 people, that’s a single building, a city planet like coruscant would be packed much tighter If five power plants went kaboom it would’ve affected similar numbers each

twilightwanderer

A couple edit notes on the fleet document: the Diamond-class is missing most of its armament and the Venator is missing its name. I'm also assuming a few of the entries (especially the Mandators) are reflecting Ruusan compliant armaments that will be upgunned at the soonest opportunity, if they haven't been already. Meanwhile, the Munifex commentary is hilarious and completely accurate, lol

twilightwanderer

Palpatine absolutely could have had a larger starfleet and the Death Star and his various other superweapon vanity projects certainly took resources that could have gone to producing more conventional warships. However, in light of the logistical and broader strategic realities, I don't believe that the given fleet size is unreasonably small, either. (note that I'll mostly be pulling from Legends since I'm pretty sure that's where the 25000 number came from, but a quick check shows that at least some of the ship characteristics were never decanonized) First off, logistics. Imperial class Star Destroyers (both I and II, hereafter ISD) had crew complements north of 37000 per ship, plus a full stormtrooper division accounting for another ~9700. That's almost 47000 mouths to feed each day (at the end of a potentially long supply chain whenever deployed offensively), paychecks to be paid, and training billets to be completed (some of which, like pilots, required 3-4 years between the Academy and specialized training). For 25000 ISDs, that's 1.16 billion individuals (including >2 million pilots as just one set of specialists). While the Empire could certainly have supported more, that's still a lot as is. On the maintenance side of logistics, ISDs were somewhat notorious for their tendency towards mild to moderate breakdowns and requirement for near-constant maintenance. Every new ISD built required setting aside time in sufficiently large spacedocks (the same ones that would be used to manufacture them) to handle regular servicing as well as repairs and refits, and that's not even getting into potential battle damage. All of the above plays a part in the size of the Imperial fleet, but I believe the true primary factor is strategic, and comes down to this question: what is the purpose of a Star Destroyer? ISDs were designed to be multi-role warships, but their primary purpose from a strategic standpoint was capital-ship combat and planetary assault, with secondary roles as a carrier and command ship that could be more easily covered by other classes of ship. Most ISDs either served as the core of battlegroups engaged in system defense or suppression, or as the primary combat ships of specialized Fleet elements (e.g. Vader's squadron). Now let's look at where those Star Destroyers are going. The Empire controlled 60-70% of the galaxy, probably over 90% of the galaxy as known to them. They weren't at war with the Hutts, or the Corporate Sector, or the Chiss Ascendency, or any other minor power that remained, and their primary internal opposition, the Rebel Alliance, had comparatively few warships on an even combat footing to ISDs, orders of magnitude less. All of that to say that the opportunities for capital-ship combat that required the power level of an ISD was quite small for a fleet of 25000. That leaves system defense/suppression as the likely deployment of most ISDs, and given that they were designed for a single ISD (with its battlegroup) to be able to hold or subjugate an average star system, 25000 goes pretty far. For one possible rough distribution, the most important couple hundred worlds (Imperial Center, Kuat, Corellia, etc.) could each have 2-3 dozen ISDs in their defense fleets and still leave enough to defend or suppress active unrest or open rebellion in up to 10000 more systems, all while allowing for ~30% out of service at any given time for repairs, upgrades, or training, and a further ~10% assigned to special duties (e.g. hunting Rebels or pirates, defending secret installations, etc.) Given the logistical and strategic considerations described, I don't see 25000 Star Destroyers as an unbelievably small number, especially given all the other ship classes available to the Imperial navy.

Snowy

Dooku. He’s the villain the galaxy deserves, but not the one Palps needs right now.

White Neko Knight

Coruscant has a population of 3 trillion sophonts. A death toll in the millions is incredibly small for the sabotage Palpatine committed. Love that count Dooku is coming into his own. Even though he'll end up increasing the death toll if he takes over. He seems the type too run the CIS as an actual nation instead of a puppet state. He'll build logistics and improve the military the best he can. The brighter the fire burns the stronger the steel, or something like that. Curious if the B1 droids will get a software overhaul now that they're not supposed to fail. Even more Curious if the Republic will turn towards the League once the CIS is handled. We can see at least a small minority pushing for it backed by the weapon manufacturer oligarchs.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Some of the Confederacy are absolutely freaking out, yes :-p. Fixed the missing Venator name, but the Diamond class wasn't a mistake. It's only a Corvette...and it really is that poorly armed. Both canon and legends state it as having only two laser cannons/laser cannon batteries.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Apparently you didn't catch that they are expecting the total to rise to around 3 million :-). 70,000 is only the casualties they knew about for sure so early on. It would likely be even higher if not for where the damage happened. They are in the super ritzy section of the city where population density is at its lowest for the entire planet. Likewise, the power plants would have been fairly far DOWN in the city, and in industrial areas. So the damage wouldn't be in higher population zones...or ones they could count casualties easily in. They also didn't go 'Kaboom' so much as melted down. Sidious wouldn't have risked still being trapped on the planet when a major plant went violently.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

It is relatively small compared to population, yes. That mostly is the result of where the damage happened, though. The Senate District and Jedi Temple area isn't exactly a high population center zone. Those two, in fact, probably have the lowest population density anywhere on the 'surface.' There will likely be improvements to CIS hardware that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise, yes. But the same will likely be true for the Republic as well. Eh. By the time they manage to finish the CIS...if they even pull that off...the chances that the general public of the Republic would accept another war right after are slim. Particularly with a power that helped them fight of the CIS.

Thanks for another amazing update 🤠! The War has begun and things are developing rapidly. I'm very happy 😁 to see a good map of territorial status of the galaxy, as I was really missing such a good visual aid! I find myself agreeing, a little bit, with Dooku, and I find his development very intriguing 🧐! I'm looking forward to seeing how his situation develops 😁! I'm also very happy to see worlds lile Naboo finally join the League 👍! Great 😃! I will greatly be looking forward to reading much more of this amazing story! Thanks for your great work so far and please keep up the great work and remember to take care of yourself 😁!

twilightwanderer

Gotcha, I went back and checked, and the reference I found for the Diamond-class was for a fanmod, not an official game (oops...). Thing's a transport, only the Confederacy would try to call it a warship

Memory Dump

He's gonna get a Darth Vader arc, isn't he (=

Delphinous

feels like he's already there. so long as he doesn't slip into the psychosis of the sith, if he is eventually defeated he'll be happy because it means the republic did strengthen itself enough

Robert Lemanski

It would be pretty neat if Celeste, having freed the Clones from the chips, uses the Force to find the best Troopers to get assigned to her hunt for Palpatine and Dooku... and is sent to the Bad Batch's front door.

Damn, RIP to Mandalore 😔. That being said tho, I remember reading somewhere in the admittedly kinda limited number of books that I’ve read that the key to actually being able to meaningfully work Beskar was a very closely and intensely guarded secret by the Mandalorian smiths (tho that might have been a Legends thing). And I can’t remember if you’ve already said anything on that matter in this fic or not. So basically my question is, CAN the CIS actually make any use of that Beskar right now? Because I’d personally make it one of my priorities to retake/liberate Mandalore as soon as realistically and practically possible to deny them access to the metal. But the answer to my question would inform just how urgent of a priority that campaign would be. After all, I’d really hate to see Beskar-armored battle droids in any form or quantity. ESPECIALLY Super Battle Droids, which are already bad enough as it is (ptsd flashbacks to Republic Commando lmao). TFTC by the way!
