! SEE BOTTOM OF POST FOR UPDATES !

Hi all,

Today we have a plugin to allow you to use more filters in RPG Maker. By default, PIXI (the engine RPG Maker MZ runs on) only has a few built-in filters. This plugin adds all of the extra filters which can be found here: https://pixijs.io/filters/examples/

While all of the filters are technically added, right now the plugin only supports the GodrayFilter via plugin command so the other filters are not very easy to use yet. I will be going through each filter and adding support over time, but this is probably going to take a while since each filter has unique properties/options that can be set and I need to test each filter individually. Furthermore, the filters via plugin command only impact the screen right now so you cannot apply individual filters to individual pictures or other sprites. While I do have plans for that functionality in the future, it will most likely be a separate plugin.

Please feel free to let me know which filters you are most interested in and I can prioritize getting those working (unless any unexpected complications arise from that filter).

Update Nov 12: Added CRT Filter plugin commands

Update Nov 18: Added Old Film, Glitch, Ascii, CrossHatch, Kawase Blur, Dot, Pixelate filters

Alpha Update 26 April 2023: This plugin has been updated to add the following filters:

Adjustment Filter

Advanced Bloom Filter

Emboss Filter

Grayscale Filter

This update also fixes a crash when loading a save file that used previous versions of this plugin. Now any time an update is released, your old save files should still be compatible.

I also updated the version of the pixi filters. These are made for Pixi JS 7 while RMMZ uses Pixi JS 5, however, after some extensive testing they all seem to work on the version of Pixi JS RPG Maker uses, and this version of pixi filters includes more filters (such as the Grayscale Filter) so I thought it was worth updating and doing testing to make sure everything worked still.

This update allows your filters to target the entire spriteset (whole screen option). This will allow you to make filters that affect pictures, the timer, and anything else added to any layer of the spritesets.

There are some limitations with this. You can still only have one filter of a given type per scene, and whether the filter affects the entire screen or only the bottom layers (how they worked previously) can only be set during filter creation. Filters will also not affect windows, as those are not actually part of the spriteset. It is still planned to let a filter affect a window, but it will come with a future update.

This was added as an option, so your old filters should all still work and still target the bottom layer only. If you prefer, you can update your create filter plugin commands to use the new option, but it should not be required to do so if you do not want to use the new option.

This version is a major re-write of basically the entire plugin. This will make it much easier to maintain and add new filters going forward, as well as make it much easier to integrate filters into my other [CGMZ] plugins. However, unfortunately it also means your plugin commands have changed and the old ones will no longer work.

Part of the major re-write included a way to more easily change what part of the scene you want to target with the filter, whether it be the entire scene including windows, just the spriteset, or even narrower targets than that. This includes all scenes now, so you are no longer limited to just the map or battle scenes.

This update added some new filters. You can now use the Noise filter which can be animated, and you can also use the Blur filter which provides a slightly different blur than Kawase Blur does. See below gif for the animated noise filter:

This also converted filter settings to use presets, so you can re-use filter settings in multiple areas if you want. Of course, you can also still change the filter settings directly in the plugin command without using a preset. Presets are how you will integrate filters with other [CGMZ] plugins in the future.

While going through the code, I also added some missing options to some filters. The Dot Filter now has a grayscale option (always enabled before) and the Godray Filter now has an alpha option (always full opacity before).

With this update, I have also split the pixi filter code out of the plugin file. I have also updated the filter code a bit to v5.3.0, which seems to be the last version of pixi filters that works easily with RPG Maker MZ, at least in my testing.

This version focuses on adding some more filters, bringing the total amount of filters supported by this plugin to 18. New to this version are:

Alpha filter - Control the alpha of the target from fully transparent to fully opaque.

Bloom filter - A simpler but with less control version of the Advanced Bloom filter. It applies a Gaussian blur to the target.

Color Replace filter - A filter that takes an input color (RGB) and replaces that color with a new color (RGB). Provide an epsilon value for how lenient / strict color detection is.

This version adds a new filter: the bulge pinch filter!

Bulge Pinch filter - Bulge or pinch the screen at a certain location. This makes it either bulge out in a circle or get pinched and compressed into a point. See below gif for how it can look:

This version adds a new filter: the displacement filter!Displacement filter - This filter uses the pixel values from a displacement map sprite to displace its filter target. You can use this for a lot of warping effects since it depends on your dispalcement map what effect you will get. Included is a difference cloud texture that can cause a watery effect. See below gif for how it can look:

This update also added a plugin command to remove all active filters. This is a convenience plugin command in case you use a lot of filters and have a need to just remove all of them at once.

Some bugs were fixed. The glitch filter now has its seed setting back, which was causing the non-animated glitch filter to not work right. The filters will now be automatically removed when returning to title from the game end screen.

Note that I have also added a displacement map image to use for your displacement filters to the download.

This version adds the ability to transition your filter properties over time when editing them. This means you can do things like fade your godrays in, slowly make effects stronger or weaker, etc. Each filter allows you to specify a time frame over which the effect will adjust to the desired value in the edit plugin commands. Note that while most effects work with this, not all effects do. Some are read-only, while others are booleans which can only be ON or OFF.

See below gif for how it can look with a godray slowly fading in:

This version is a quick update to fix editing your adjustment filters and turning everything pink. I made a small typo by writing greeen instead of green which made the green value NaN. It should now edit properly and transition to your new values over time as expected.

That’s just awesome. At the moment I don't know what other filters I would use, but the GodRay filter is just great (especially since the effect is animated). What I could imagine would be the glow filter. With it you can surely achieve cool effects. (e.g. ghosts, if you activate "Knockout") But that would be one of the filters that would rather impact sprites, I think.
