Japan was isolated from the outside world, even their immediate neighbors, for centuries. That's why their culture is so strange, they refused to even interact with the Chinese, they're like children who have been isolated from the outside world.

Andrew Yoo

Great job on the episode, Scotty! :D

I am loyal to TJ-sama! -TJ's Japycophant

Jeff DePaul

Shit, this was interesting. I'm gonna watch it again later to copy down those documentaries.

Berto

No TJ Asian accent?

Dylan Brown

Very interesting I want to see more of these types of episodes about countries!

American children can’t walk to school because they’ll be shot in the streets instead of a classroom like god intended.

Manfredi & Johnson

They refused to repatriate shipwrecked sailors because it might generate outside interest in Japan

Asian cultures emphasize blind obedience and conformity, which is why US tech firms are so eager to hire their emigrants. Take someone who is proud of their own slavery and make them a desperate indentured servant, and you have a worker incapable of showing solidarity or even opening up on a human level to their coworkers. Working for a company that’s mostly H1B is an almost indescribable hell.

With the thing with the Hosts putting on the fantasy for women, they also have it for men as well. Many salarymen meet at these places with clients as a way to impress them. Many of the salarymen also go to these places themselves during the few bits of downtime they can, and it's typically the ones higher up the tax bracket. The ones who can afford it go to these host bars, and the ones who can't just settle for regular bars.

If TJ thinks that corporate subservience culture is bad in Japan, he hasn't seen India or the Philippines.

Pretty rich to see Paul talking about “betas” Methinks the ball of salt doth protest too much

Late comment. It’s just sad. There’s a place that holds girls with a lot of trauma and boys and juvenile detention centers the only girl center on the left side of Maryland has 26 beds. I was working 16 hour days I watch my coworkers get their vaginas kicked in no shit plantar fasciitis 24 hour days for supervisors. The point is they’re real services that could really use good people but here we are killing ourselves for fucking what Amazon to do what to get the next thing so I can use this phone. You know what it’s like to listen to children that are now teenagers that saw the very worst of adults and then to have to work 16 hour days and realize you can’t do it if you’re gonna go anywhere and be a slave, maybe help out society.

happilobstr

That last word took me so long to comprehend 😂

Loved this episode its tiring seeing people suck Japan's dick thinking it's this magical world but every time I've delved into their society it's just depressing and filled with people waiting to die.

There’s an American guy who’s extremely famous in Japan: Commodore Matthew Perry. Basically he sailed to Japan on behalf of the U.S. government in the 1800s and demanded Japan open itself up for trade or the U.S. would go to war with them, and Japan obliged. Most Americans don’t know who Matthew Perry is, and if you gave them the facts like I did they’d probably say, “He sounds like a piece of shit; why should he be famous?” But he’s legendary in Japan because he’s the one person most responsible for ending the country’s isolationism.

Lance

I agree!

You guys could probably do sequel or two on this subject. Japan's hidden homeless crisis comes to mind immediately.

It’s actually really difficult for a company to fire employees in Japan because of a law that says the company has to pay them something like 5 or 6 months of pay. So what companies do is try to make their work conditions more and more miserable until the employee quits on their own.
