I'm not sure I buy the cell phone addiction thing. It's like saying you're addicted to having your wallet, or your keychain. I feel somewhat naked if I don't have my Swiss army knife available too, and a smartphone is basically the electronic equivalent of that. Going without it means depriving myself of a whole briefcase worth of tools. Clock, notepad, calculator, calendar, flashlight, camera, the telephone itself of course, the list goes on and on, and that's just what comes standard. Even without a network connection it's still an imminently useful piece of technology.

And yes, I will nibble on your mushroom if it turns out there's something special about cellphones that makes their absence more stressful than the absence of any other tool people are accustomed to having at their disposal.
