I just thought it was your accent. 🤣🤣🤣 Glad you're feeling better!!

Okay this was super funny even though I normally get emotional during these two episodes. Hate to break it to you, the actors are the same and so are the colors they wore. But this storyline usually confuses people, I was hoping you'd be well enough to react to 38 and 39 together for that reason. It is what it is but super excited for the next episode and glad to hear you're on the mend! And just for your notes, in case you're confused next time. Song Lan = dark colors, turned into a puppet. Xiao Xingchen = white, dead in a coffin.

Glenny Lennox

Is the audio funky here or is it just on my end?

The best notification 😍

Trolltek

yeah the recording came out a bit weird

Trolltek

To be fair I did react to those episodes like 2 months ago lmao

Glenny Lennox

No worries! Just wasn’t sure if it was what I was watching on or not lol

Leaf

You didn't know? Mo Dao Zu Shi is actually a cautionary tale against throuples

Meri

Im not excusing Xue Yangs actions but i feel like when he was living with Xingchen and Jing he actually liked living with them. Im also pretty sure he had romantic feelings for Xingchen bc he was the only one that treated him well. Thats why he was so affected with his death.

melodysweetmusic177

xiao xingchen and song lan never changed color schemes, xiao xingchen was always dressed in white and song lan always in black. Only when xueyang pretended to be xia xingchen did he wear black because xueyang himself wears black

While I feel sympathy for the child Xue Yang once was, I have none for the monster he became, and I will never forgive the way he ruined other people's lives.

Becca Rose

And it was like only one episode with the two of them there. I’ve seen reactors think Xiao is Wangji’s brother, so for me it’s nice to have a laugh instead of crying this episode. 🤣

I see where you’re going with saying that Wei Ying could have been like Xue Yang if he hadn’t had the chance to be adopted by the Jiang clan but I don’t agree, Wei Ying has the principles his parents taught him including one in particular. Moreover, as much as we talk about Wei Wuxian being a demonic cultivator (he isn’t, he uses the spirits of the dead. He doesn’t abuse the living), Xue Yang is really a demonic cultivator because he abuses the living for his plans. But this is another matter. Where I agree with your idea is that there is a real reason why people compare Wei Ying and Xue Yang: both have experienced abandonment, violence, loneliness, and humiliation. Both are extremely intelligent, talented, mischievous, capable of sincere affection, and both can be very extreme in their reactions. The story deliberately creates a mirror effect. But I don’t think the difference is just “the Jiang saved him.” Wei Ying already had something before his adoption. Sorry if it’s just a little spoiler, I don’t remember if it was already discussed in the drama (it seems to me it was discussed with Yanli). He keeps a phrase from his mother as a compass: "Remember the things others do for you, not the things you do for others. Only when people don’t hold so much in their hearts would they finally feel free.", basically saying : remember the good, forget the bad and live freely. It’s not just a nice quote: you can see that it’s a profound way of living in the world. Even as a child, before the great tragedies, Wei Ying has a natural tendency to reach out to others, to protect someone weaker than himself, to seek joy. He often transforms his suffering into energy turned towards others. Xue Yang does almost the opposite: he transforms his suffering into a debt to make the world pay. That said, and this is where I agree with your idea, I would add a nuance: I don’t think Wei Ying was immune to becoming someone much darker. The Jiang gave him several decisive things: - a family, even if imperfect - real emotional ties - an identity and a sense of belonging - people to remind him of his worth when he himself is in doubt. Without them, he could have become more suspicious, more cynical, more brutal to survive. Maybe not a second Xue Yang, but maybe someone closer to the Wei Ying of the Burial Mounds pushed to the extreme: solitary, convinced that he must carry his burdens alone, using dangerous means because he has no one to trust. The detail that makes me think he probably wouldn’t have ended up exactly like Xue Yang is that we see Wei Ying continuing to protect others even after going through terrible things. When he loses his golden core, when he is isolated, rejected, demonized, he still retains this reflex: "someone suffers = I have to act." Xue Yang, on the other hand, ends up developing a reflex much closer to: "someone hurt me = the world will pay." Wei Ying therefore cannot be like Xue Yang. But without the Jiang, he could have become a harsher, sadder, and more dangerous version of himself. And there is another interesting comparison: Wei Ying may not be so much the mirror of Xue Yang as that of Jin Guangyao. All three started with very little, but they chose very different ways of responding to suffering. Many discussions about The Untamed fall into "X became like this only because of his past" or on the contrary "it’s just his personality". But the series is more subtle: it constantly shows the interaction between the two. Wei Ying is a very good example because he has suffered enormous traumas and yet he maintains an almost obstinate ability to love people and find light. But this light is not magic: it was also maintained by the Jiang, by his memories of his parents, and later by Lan Wangji who is almost a silent anchor for him. And above all, Wei Ying is not only optimistic, he actively chooses where to look. He could feed his resentment towards Yu Ziyuan (Jiang Cheng and Yanli’s mother), towards the world of cultivation, towards his destiny... but he tends to retain affection rather than wounds. Sorry for the long comment and congrats for reading all of this XD

It's so funny to hear you say you don't like interactions with the dead and stuff like that in the context of MDZS/The Untamed where the main character is pretty much a necromancer AND he was brought back from the dead himself, like that's the whole story 😭 (but yeah I get it, it's just your personal preference and that's perfectly fine.) But to add to what I was saying in the comments of the previous episode about how these techniques allow the victims to speak for themselves even after death, I think we can also tie it to the larger theme of misinformation in the story, how easily the truth can be altered and how it affects people, so sometimes in this context I think it's important for characters to tell their own story in a way or another instead of making (possibly wrong or even harmful) assumptions. And the fact that Wei Wuxian developed the Empathy technique is telling. I'm kind of going on a tangent here, I know that's not what you "complained" about, but I had this thought and wanted to share it, before getting into the new episode

nvmind

yeah he definitely found some peace and comfort living with Xiao Xingchen and A-Jing and that's why he couldn't stand Song Lan getting in the way. I do believe he loved Xiao Xingchen, but he obviously didn't know how to act on those feelings in a healthy way because, unfortunately, their little domestic life was a lie and the comfort it brought to Xue Yang was way too late to fix him after living like a rabid racoon all his life before 😭

Meri

I agree with everything you said and in a way i feel bad for Xue Yang but at the same time i dont because he was a bad person. The lyrics in his character song are also pretty telling in my opinion.

Katie-Didn’t

He kinda caught feelings for the first time and had no idea what they were given they were his first feelings ever. It obviously wasn’t HEALTHY, but he DID improve, but behaved normally out of habit regretting it after.

Katie-Didn’t

I have to agree with you hard core. Xue Yang is INTENDED to show another person who had basically the same history and opportunities in life and went in a horrible direction with the same cultivation and opportunities. 1. Even as a street orphan Wei Ying didn’t steal food/money from anyone except dogs sometimes so he already had a better conscience. 2. They were both taken in by clans and taught to cultivate- Xue Yang murdered the entire clan that raised him. 3. Xue Yang doesn’t really have feelings other than personal hurt and anger that he thinks he should take out on the world. Wei Ying has ALL the feelings and tries to take on his others troubles no matter the cost to himself so everyone else can be happy at the cost of his own happiness (and he constantly worries about burdening anyone where Xue Yang would never think of any of those things). 4. Wei Ying never had any desire for power or even to become a cultivator (his fantasy is to just have a normal simple life farming or whatever) while Xue Yang always craved the power to take what he wanted and enact revenge against anyone he perceived as doing him wrong. 5. Xue Yang lost a finger as a kid which sucks due to HOW he lost it. However Wei Ying was frequently attacked by dogs and even though he didn’t lose any body parts he was always covered in bruises, scratches, bites, didn’t have shoes so his feet were always a mess. When he’s injured he’s not PRETENDING to be tough, he’s just used to being in pain all the time since he was frequently whipped with Zidian (whether it was a couple lashes or covered his whole backside down his legs depended on Madam Yu’s mood since he wasn’t “getting in trouble” or breaking rules alone (once they took a break from training in the middle of the summer to cool off with a swim and eat some watermelon and he got in trouble for slacking and bringing the others down with him)- it was Jiang Cheng and other kids in the clan their age and they’d have to go kneel and reflect or the equivalent of lifting weights hard core or running laps while Wei Ying was taken away to be whipped and verbally abused; and even when it wasn’t his idea he’d always willingly take the blame) after being taken in. So I’d say the years of constant pain probably equal the loss of a pinkie. Xue Yang is written to show that Wei Ying WASN’T just someone who was lucky and had advantages others didn’t so he was naturally grateful and kind due to his life and tragedies. We’re being shown Demon Twink running around with the same background being a sociopathic mass murderer because it’s amusing, they offended him somehow, or they were just obstructing him from getting what he wanted. The idea being that you CAN choose what kind of person you’re going to be regardless of circumstances because you can choose how you look at everything that’s happened to you: you can dwell on how unfair it is and angry it makes you or you can choose to see things as life being unfair in general and you aren’t exempt, you learned things from the experience, and move on with doing what you can with your life in the present and trying to have a better future.

Katie-Didn’t

So it’s basically that you don’t like tropes that make a Deus ex Machina easily added without SEEMING to stand out of the flow? Because personally I hate when anyone pulls a Deus ex Machina

Katie-Didn’t

She was SUPPOSED to have been born with white eyes which is why she did the “blind girl” thing since she didn’t have a family or home or education, and she did better with “being blind” than just begging.

Katie-Didn’t

23:40 Right now since Wuxian is using “empathy”, he’s living through everything she experienced including her thoughts and feelings in the memories she’s choosing to show him. Since she’s been pretending to be blind most of her life she’s seen a LOT of things people normally wouldn’t because of people doing things in front of her they didn’t think she could see so she’s had to commit to it before. Given the way he was found and how he’s acting, she KNOWS he’s a bad guy because of her life experience and knows her new friend is just too nice and naive. So she didn’t want Xiao Xingchang to find out she’d lied because she didn’t want to disappoint him, but also knew she was more likely to catch Xue Yang doing something that would make Xiao separate from him. She couldn’t say anything about it without serious proof though, and “being blind” has always made her less of a threat to bad guys in her experience since she can’t witness any bad things they do. And just by the by, blind people still hear other people talking, can easily ask for descriptions and feel engravings and such. My uncle is totally blind with completely white eyes and constantly underestimated (sometimes he recognizes people by the perfume, body spray, deodorant, shampoo etc. scent they never change and it freaks people out when he says hello to them before they speak).

Deenita Morton

Demon twink. That description is perfect

Just wanna say that this is the first time I’ve become a creator’s patron. I’m Brazilian, so the exchange here is pretty expensive and it’s difficult to spare the money solely for entertainment, but your The Untamed content is extremely valuable to me as a fan. I’m very appreciative of you considering the universe itself, the politics, the social hierarchy and the psychology that lead the characters’ actions, not just wangxian’s relationship itself. There are many interesting characters in MDZS, Wei Wuxian is still my favorite of all danmei characters, and I love emotional reactions as much as the next guy, but your attention to detail makes you stand out among reactors. I’m very interested in your book club as well. Hopefully, you’ll get to The Husky and His White Cat Shizun one day. It’s a complicated one I feel you can be trusted with. Thanks for the commentary! Hope you’re feeling better!

Regarding the culutivaors are witches, there is a great video esay on YouTube called "The Untamed and the witch archetype" it's very interesting to watch.

funny enough, i'm the same. personally i just don't like supernatural stories... i don't like zombie stuff or talking to the dead either. and i HATE reincarnation stories. but The Untamed is one of my favorite series ever... and it has all of that and more 😂 in fact, two of my top 5 BL series have to do with reincarnation (this one, and another called I Feel You Linger In The Air) 💀 sometimes a good enough story will just override your preferences, even the strongest ones. it's weird lol

mase

i totally get what you mean in the beginning about bringing back the dead in stories and such. i like in-universe rules to make sense, be set and be kept. i also hate it when characters are often brought back after dying in some way or another. for me, it's poor writing, and it almost feels manipulative, like it's being done to force emotions from audiences. a character we love dies, but actually they're not 100% dead, we find out they can be brought back, or they became a ghost and they can still interact with friends/family, they reincarnated, etc. i also prefer some finality and stakes. when they can still chat with dead characters or bring them back to life, it makes it feel like there are no stakes for the characters, since death isn't really an issue. it does make sense for this kind of story of course, since it's all about spirits, ghosts, puppets, reincarnation, etc. but yeah, being able to get answers from dead characters instead of forcing the living characters to figure it out on their own, can feel like a bit of a cheat/cop out from a writing perspective. also i when you first pronounced The Untamed wrong, i thought you just misspoke. but after you did it a few times i realized you just liked saying it that way 😂 i feel like everyone does that sometimes. some words are just fun to say wrong!

same. in different circumstances (and more importantly if he'd made different choices), xue yang could have become a good person and a respected cultivator on an equal level with both song lan and xingchen. but instead he made the choice to become a monster, ultimately leading to so much suffering for people who didn't deserve it any more than child xue yang deserved his treatment. doesn't really matter that he felt some kind of way for xingchen, sure he treated him "well"--it was really all just manipulation and taking advantage, he cared in his own twisted way but still--it doesn't matter because he was still abusing and killing others at the same time. personally i'll never forgive him for what he did to xingchen, song lan, and jing. xue yang deserves every bit of an awful end.

mase

[spoiler warning for anyone watching this show for the first time along with the reactions, don't read if you haven't seen ep 39] essentially he fell in love (well, more like fell into obsession) with someone who was already in a relationship, so he killed their partner, and then had the gall to be all surprised pikachu face when his "love" found out and was devastated enough to kill himself over it. i feel bad for child xue yang, but adult xue yang gets zero sympathy from me.
