To be fair, Wangji isn't in much of this part of the book either cause its the flashback. But both actors were multitasking during the 4ish months of filming. One of my favorite things about social media, are edits of Wangji's inner thoughts during this episode. Cause you can tell by his facial expressions that he's thinking of when he lost Wuxian and is sympathizing with Song Lan. Oh such fun truama.

And it’s not like he has a lot of lines in the entire show put together anyway. He isn’t the MC even in the novels.

This isn’t my favorite side-story arc, but for me it’s just kinda there to wrap up the stories of some of the characters from the flashbacks. Like “here’s what happened with these guys and an opportunity to let Wei Ying bond with the juniors”. That and showing the parallels between Wei Ying and Xue Yang to demonstrate the difference between using the same cultivation path for good vs evil and doing the same thing for the two characters personalities with nearly identical histories on paper.

I feel like people start missing him when stuff is depressing. Like during the arc after the cave. He doesn't say much but somehow you feel better seeing him by Wuxian's side. Him not being there makes things feel worse.

Katie-Didn’t

27:45 he was trying to bring him back as a puppet- but like Wuxian he’d killed himself, didn’t WANT to come back, so no one can ever actually bring him back or communicate with him.

43:30 to be fair, Wangji WAS the guy that always said “no”. NOW whatever Wuxian wants Wuxian gets if Wangji has any say. I mean he’s basically become his personal bodyguard AND sugar daddy after being without him for 16 years 😂 The lantern is more like “what’s going on with Wangji??? Lantern? He bought a lantern? Who is this man?!”

I was missing Lan Zhan too :D Maybe that's why in my opinion his expressions and few words in this episode were sooo intense for me! When they were in front of Jin's grave and he said that 'Fortunately...' omg, my heart was broken. Just one word and a whole world of a mix of sadness and relief that their fate was different from Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen... My dream is to read the entire novel from Lan Zhan's point of view, that would be insane!!

Meri

The juniors were the biggest shippers of Wangji and Wuxian in the novel so youre not wrong with saying that they know somethings up lol

The Coffin Town arc allowed Wangxian to find Nie Mingjue's corpse. Now the fun begins.

Another part of it anyway. I think they have a leg, arm, and torso now. Still missing the other leg, arm, and head but I don’t think they included the search for the other 2 limbs in the show, just kinda went with “I have 2 legs now, guess they didn’t bother to cut the other leg off”.

Just as an FYI, I realized the show wasn’t actually explaining why they’re having such difficulty identifying the body OR the ghost sword above the coffin they found- it’s showing the ghostly image of the sword floating above the body because it wasn’t JUST dismembered- it’s soul was dismembered with the body (doesn’t know who they are because no head) AND energy from the Yin Tiger Tally was used to do it which is what made it such a horrible and unusual thing, becoming such a strong fierce corpse that couldn’t even be sealed/suppressed by whoever did it in one piece. The only motives to do it in the first place is to prevent a corpse from ever being used as a puppet but at the cost of soul destruction it’s FAR more likely done to prevent the dead from communicating, especially with each piece being suppressed scattered and separated. It’s also not something most CAN do: the method is forbidden and difficult to even find not to mention actual ABILITY (like how they just talked about “cultivating the portal talisman” ability before it could be used). Since success is NEVER guaranteed in cultivation of ANY ability, just like learning martial arts or sword fighting: not every technique is successfully learned AND used plus even if it’s used, talent plays a role in how well/easily it’s done every individual). That also narrows who COULD be involved in the dismemberment. Usually, if a cultivator dies an unusual death it’s not strange to ASK the Lan clan to use inquiry just to ask if they were murdered. If they can’t contact the person it’s usually assumed they weren’t murdered unless there’s more evidence simply because their soul didn’t linger. That’s a false assumption because cultivation families and cultivators who started very young are HIGHLY unlikely to linger after death without VERY VERY strong resentment to overcome the “soul calming” spells performed on them starting at birth, then regularly at certain ages as they grow and reach “maturity” (mentioned in the episode where Wuxian was caught by Wen Chao, beaten, threatened him with becoming a fierce corpse and killing them all (he’d calculated his chances after the beating were about 1:4. Were 1:3 by the time they finished torturing and talking crap because he wasn’t lying about not having gone through the full course of soul calming spells as he hadn’t been found and started them till he was 8-9 rather than starting at birth) before being thrown into the burial mounds to die). BUT cultivators who DO manage to stick around will ALWAYS be a LOT stronger as ANY kind of undead or ghost from their cultivation of Yang energy. This being the case, NORMALLY someone who’s been murdered tends to at LEAST make an unhappy ghost/spirit linger and can usually answer “yes/no” even if they don’t know who killed them. That’s half of why “inquiry” tends to stick to identity and “yes/no” questions, the other half is the disorientation after death requires simple questions with simple answers for newer dead. The temperament and willpower to hold onto the mortal plane while composed of Yin energy and the Yang they need to keep staying (if its weak or been around a while) or get stronger (vengeful types) can only use whatever’s ambient in the area since feeding off life energy when there’s physical barriers in the way: bodies, rock, plants etc the energy is PART of them so absorbing while still combined with the physical parts requires at least a ghost strong enough to move physical objects. So Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are carrying around an arm, leg, sword, and now torso with its soul being separated into each body part and its VERY confused and angry not knowing who they are etc. in the bag Lan Zhan is carrying to keep it sealed till it’s whole. Whenever they find another piece it doesn’t necessarily LOOK like it matches the other pieces UNTIL they’re together and recognize each piece as part of itself, then it’s true form can be seen. The image of the sword was VERY different than the sword they found to start with and have in the bag they’re carrying. The show was TRYING to indicate that the sword’s true appearance had been revealed with more of the body and soul getting put back together inside the bag. In the novels they had to start using a second bag at this point since it became too difficult to contain in one with the body parts re-attaching themselves.

You should definitely watch some of the The Untamed edits that others have done during certain parts. Like how all of the junior cultivators are Lan Zhan's little ducklings and Wuxian being the chaos gremlin he is. Suggested: wei wuxian and the juniors: a chaotic dynamic aka wei wuxian being disrespected by lan's weiying Jiang Cheng being done with wangxian for 5 minutes oN crack by its frigay wei wuxian being the grandmaster of troublemaking for 6 minutes straight by pyjamacryptid the untamed cast moments i think about way too often by yiboknows how to impress your crush by Kim vi Suki how to seduce your boyfriend by Kim vi Suki lan wangji panicking in gay for almost 5 minutes by pyjamacryptid the untamed juniors aka our favourite junior quartet by lan.zhannn

Lan Wangji has already been through this heartbreak once before when Wei Wuxian died the first time.

Leaf

Wangji got Wuxian back after 16 years, he's not pushing his man away, anything for his boo djdjjd

nancy metz

I totally agree with you on that "fortunately". Even Wen Ning recognized it. 😭😭

Idun V

It's kinda interesting that you'd say that, since those characters don't show up in the flashbacks in the novels. The show wanted to give them more of a backstory with the main cast.

Katie-Didn’t

I’m aware. Wei Ying learns about Xiao Xingchang being his martial uncle when Lan Zhan is telling him what happened like, 10 years before and doesn’t see him till he’s dead. I was referring to how I view it in the show- saying more would have spoilers since there’s no Yin iron in the novels or donghua so there’s a different part of the story that’s filled in by Xue Yang’s character instead of them finding out he’s the one that re-built the other half of the tiger tally using Yin Iron. I still find the story arc WAY too long and boring in the novels for it to serve its purpose, but it’s an opinion and I know a lot of other people really like it. Besides, I’m never a fan of messing with an author’s work unnecessarily and putting them in the flashbacks was totally unnecessary, much less introducing them all to each other. I make allowances for leaving things out and SLIGHTLY altering things that can’t easily translate to a screen, but I REALLY don’t like people just changing the story or adding stuff. It’s like “here’s the updated version of the Mona Lisa, the smile is bigger and she’s blonde”. It’s not the Mona Lisa then, is it? You just screwed up someone else’s work and tried to pass it off as close enough to the original to be a “re-make”. Because I’ve read literally close to 10,000 sci-fi/fantasy novels you’d be shocked at how many were made into TERRIBLE movies and shows or at least much worse versions of the book (also true if regular fiction novels- they even screwed up “fried green tomatoes” which is old enough it’s considered a classic, Ender’s Game just did a terrible job with what was left out and explaining what was going on in Enders head since half the book was his thoughts, Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe was OKAY, but not enough explanation for some scenes they included without context and a LOT of the book was about symmetry: 2 boys and girls, 2 blondes and brunettes, 2 warriors 2 diplomats etc… except they only kept 1 blonde which would have been fine if it wasn’t for the symmetry of it all and the invention of bleach AND wigs. In The Untamed it’s difficult to have someone else’s face on “present”Wei Ying without a LOT of explaining and 2 different actors so I give them a pass on that. I’m not a fan of the Yin Iron story and partially because it’s doesn’t even flow well, it seems VERY artificial. I LOVE seeing Lan Zhan acted out instead of monosyllabic replies and lots of silence with fists tightening and shaking from apparent anger since you only have Wei Ying’s interpretation of his reactions which are USUALLY so much worse than what’s really happening and he always believes everything Lan Zhan says insulting him or being a jerk and just mean. So SEEING another interpretation is something I enjoy. I even understand why they added the Yin Iron story. I just find the coffin town story that lasts 3 episodes starring 5 ppl who had 1-2 flashback episodes that weren’t supposed to happen pretty boring. Xue Yang is the entertainment and I would just skim the novel and skip the episodes if he didn’t bring the psychopath contrast to Wuxian to the mix.

Idun V

I just feel really bad for Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing. Xue Yang can eat dirt

Dan

I think he did use Xingchen’s sword to kill evil twink? I could be wrong tho

I had an unhealthy amount of love after I first saw an edit of him on YouTube before I watched The Untamed. After watching the show.. I regret the love I felt for him.

Katie-Didn’t

Oh he definitely has plenty of screen time it’s not that. It’s just literal number of words spoken in all 50 episodes added up is SO LITTLE. And I feel so bad for Xiao Zhan as an actor playing Wei Wuxian who can’t be at peace if someone isn’t talking… he would walk around with an entire printout script for the day that SEEMED like it was all the scenes being filmed, but was actually just his book of lines to deal with for the day… every day of filming 😂🥺😂 Yibo usually just glanced at his printout for any lines he had longer than a word.

Gabriela.

All of your takes on the alternate universe wangxians with other duos are very spot on.
