what I like most about MXTX (the author of the novel) is that she doesn’t romanticize the “tragic villains,” nor does she treat them as an inhuman monsters. She shows that ordinary people with real pain can absolutely become cruel, and that not every act of cruelty deserves, or even allows, redemption because of what that person went through in the past

They can’t say it in the show but Mo Xuanyu was SUPPOPPEEERRRRR gay. In fact that is why he was kicked out of Jin clan as a cultivator and sent back to Mo Manor (he was hitting on the other cultivators lol)

Mo Xuanyu's mother was a servant. Jin Guanyao was the son of a prostitute which makes him "lower" in rank. Mo Xuanyu in the show supposedly harassed Guangyao's wife. In the novel he supposedly harassed Guanyao himself. I suspect Guanyao wanted to get rid of him, so he made a rumor about Mo Xuanyu to force him out. That or Mo Xuanyu found out his secrets.

Mo Xuanyu is Guangyao's brother. Mo Xuanyu is about 26 yo and Guangyao is in his early 30s

I've been trying not to do book spoilers, but since it's out there already - IIRC it's a bit vague in the text, but I think that although Mo Xuanyu was taken into the Jin clan as a disciple, JGS still wasn't publicly acknowledging him as his son, so it's my theory that MXY was harassing JGY to make them say out loud "you're hitting on your own half-brother" thereby forcing them to acknowledge him, but they just kicked him out instead. Just my theory, though, grain of salt and all that. Poor Mo Xuanyu. We had him for two minutes and he's out here haunting the narrative.

Different character. His mom was the most beautiful lady in the area so he kept making excuses to visit. Dimples friend was the one whose mom worked with him. Mo Xuanu was learning Wuxian’s type cultivation from Dimples till he saw papers he wasn’t supposed to and was kicked out with rumors made up after the fact

The harassment everyone kept mentioning about Mo Xuanu and cutting themselves off before saying WHO he harassed to get kicked out of the tower was Dimples (didn’t happen, but it was the internal rumor circulated) in the novels but that wouldn’t fly with censorship (half brothers).

VERY VERY few bad people actually think they’re bad, much less evil people. They almost always believe in their reasons for means justifying their beliefs/reasoning. So Dimples genuinely believes he has good reason for everything he’s done, it just doesn’t mean anyone else would agree if it was general knowledge.

I simply love that WWX seen as this big bed and yet some of his most powerful powers is turning into a paper gingerbread man an something called Empathy. Sure the later is more powerful than what we could do. But still it still it reminds me of movies and sadly even the real world where 90 % of fights could be prevented with a little talk and Empathy and yet powerful, old man are scared shirtless and see it as a weakness that shouldn't be taught to men.

i agree about the new generation of adults/clan leaders wanting to be different than the previous generation (the elders of their time). but i think the environment is also a factor. wei wuxian, jiang cheng, nie huaisang, etc were still fairly carefree in the beginning too. difference is they had to live through multiple major tragedies in just a couple years when they were teenagers (war, clans getting wiped out, being hostages of the wen clan for a time, loss of loved ones). so they were forced to grow up early and lose out on normal teenage years. this younger generation is not living through any of those things, so naturally they will have a much different experience based on that alone. but like i said, you're also right that the new generation of leaders seem to have relaxed some rules, since even the lan kids are not as uptight as wangji and xichen and their peers were. also not wangji enabling wuxian's alcoholism... 😂 it's sweet, but also wuxian needs an intervention more lol
