Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 – “The Bells” (GOT 8x5) REACTION!

DANY?! THE BELLS WERE RINGING!! We knew she was furious after everything she's lost, but burning the city AFTER they surrendered?! All those innocent people... 😭 Watching Jon and Tyrion realize what was happening was HARD. Where do they even go from here?!

And DROGON absolutely destroying the fleet and the defenses?! Cersei finally realized she couldn't win, but by then everything was falling apart!

Also THE HOUND AND THE MOUNTAIN!! We finally got that fight! But Sandor making sure Arya walked away first... after everything these two have been through together 😭❤️ Then watching her try to survive in those streets had us SO STRESSED!

And JAIME AND CERSEI?! After all these seasons, it ends with them together underneath the Red Keep. We've wanted Cersei stopped for SO LONG, but seeing her scared and Jaime trying to get her out still hit us. What an ending for these two!

Where we stand after 8x5: King's Landing is devastated, Cersei is gone, and Dany has won the battle... but what does ruling look like after THIS?! Can Jon still stand beside her? What is Tyrion gonna do now?!

We don't even want to talk about how close we are to being done. IT HURTS! We love this show and we're gonna miss this journey with y'all SO MUCH!

ONE EPISODE LEFT!! HOW IS THIS GONNA END?! 😭❤️

Oh man, here we go..

Ljh

Don't worry. The GOT world lives on with HOTD. I'm so ready for season 2 next week.

Daniel

Yeah and it lives on in a good way, not in a awful way that season 7 and 8 ended it.

Juan Wilson

Honestly my problem with it is that if that was like 1 of 3 possible outcomes not even being the best I would be content … but your telling me out of the 7 + better outcomes 2 of them being the obvious everyone wants John snow to make a difference choices this is the one

Juan Wilson

The math is off on purpose cause none of it adds up lol

Juan Wilson

But honestly c’mon John not being weird about the aunt thing cause he wasn’t a Targaryen his whole life 1 boom now they’re in love still … this out of nowhere dragon kill whack 2 then John will still bill a rider … 3 if both those things were still in tact when the bell rang and she didn’t go crazy John would just be populating Targaryen blood line but with someone else cause dany can’t have kids anymore since the miscarriage with drago

Daniel

The problems started with season 7 episode 1. I didn't see it back then but now when I'm rewatching it with your reactions it's painful obvious how season 7 and season 8 are so different and not in a good way. The only reason they gave us that weird scene in season 7 when The Dragon Queen and Varys went eye to eye so they could their ending. Everything that's happening in season 7 and 8 is an excuse to give us this cheap ending. Still, season 1-4 may be the best ever TV has produced for us and season 5 and 6 was still great. That can never been taken away. Have "fun" with that last episode! :). (House Of the Dragon is really good so don't get to depressed when GOT is ending fot you).

Teej

Part of the significance of the white horse with Arya at the end is religion. From the New Testament, "I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death.". It's also reminiscent of the white horse Daenerys received as a wedding present from Khal Drogo. Serving as a sort of reminder of who Daenerys used to be before she was repeatedly betrayed and lost everyone she loved, before she descended into madness.

Tyrone Bigguns

I never realized Varys was trying to poison her. I just thought he was concerned with her eating/depression. But once you said that it did seem that way, because why else would the little girl be worried about getting caught if she wasn't up to something sinister?

Adrian Rhodes

Cersei did NOT suffer enough with her death smh

Adrian Rhodes

The problem with this last season isn't how it ended or where everyone ends up. The issue was it was rushed. And that was because the showrunners wanted to hurry up and end it so they could move on to another project. Had we gotten another season or 2 to show Dany's descent into madness then it would have made more sense. But as it is, her actions really weren't wrong. As I said before, she should have done this a long time ago and it would have saved Missandei.

LLCoolT

When I initially watched these final episodes, I got swept up in the hype, action, emotions, drama . But it wasn’t until after it all ended and I sat back to think about the whole story that it settled within me how unsatisfying the story concluded. Then upon rewatches, the cracks became so much more prevalent. The dialogue suffered so much in the later seasons, it’s painful.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

I still don't understand why Daenerys wasted time burning the city while giving Cersei a chance to escape. Dany is lucky that the basement doors were blocked. Else Cersei would have left king's landing. Writers destroyed logic just to make her look cruel and crazy. If Dany snapped, she would have first gone for the red keep and killed Cersei herself. She once tried to give water to a slave sentenced to die in Astapor. And she said I don't want the blood of the innocents on my hands. She was hurt to see dead children nailed to the posts in Meereen. She locked up her children (Rhaegal and Viserion) because a burnt child's bones were presented to her. And the same Dany murdered thousands of innocents?

Jessica Houser

Dany is one of my top 5 characters. I feel like Varys was right though....the coin flipped on Dany went sideways. I completely understand how Dany lost everything and everyone and was all alone, even Jon rejected her. But....I also think she was dead wrong for this. The bells were rung, the scorpions and Iron fleet were destroyed, and the soldiers dropped their swords. As she's portrayed in this episode, it makes it seem like she never intended not to burn King's Landing. Thats not the Dany who saved people, and freed people from tyrants and masters. I totally get it though....I'm not sure I would do it differently if I was her..... after all she had suffered. Her father and Rhaegar dying, Viserys and his crown, Drogo and the unborn baby she lost, Viserion and Rhaegal, Jorah and then Missande....anyone would break. I just feel like with maybe another season or a few more episodes it wouldn't look like she went from 0 to completely mad so quickly. I do like how Jon stayed true to himself and attempted not to kill the surrendered soldiers. He even helped the innocent people where he could. That was completely believable. Lastly, I wanted Jamie to survive with Brienne and Cersi to die alone. She had chances to make peace and save herself and her child.....but her ambition of the throne and ruling got in the way. Tragic. Let's see how this ends and what ya'll think....I can't wait to hear your final take on it all! Thanks for the reaction!

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Question: how do you feel about these episodes compared to seasons 1 to 4? Maybe you can answer this after you finish the last episode.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

The author of the novel series mentioned that the books will be going in a different direction. Several things will be different from the show. But some things will be the same. Hopefully we get to read the books someday and see how it actually ends.

sam

I don’t mind the mad queen arc I just think it should’ve been drawn out more in my opinion they should have kept barristan alive instead of killing him in season five because once they rang the bells their was no inciting incident to make Dany go crazy because she had already won if barristan was their and somehow died during the fall of kings landing that could’ve been dany’s breaking point to make her go mad. and her love story with Jon is way to rushed they hade like five scenes together and then they bang in the finale of season seven and Jon is ready to give up everything for her.

Katie Thomas

I love the Mad Queen arc. They completely botched it with the writing and pacing though. D&D should have passed the torch and let HBO make 10 seasons like they wanted, with different writers. Despite obvious plot holes and what not, I’ve always loved the cinematography and editing in this episode.

Harvey

Her becoming the mad queen would be absolutely fine if they actually built it up in the shows, I fully believe she will turn mad in the books but it will make a lot more sense because of jon connington and young griff who’s defo a blackfyre

Nymeria Stark

Awesome reaction! Much respect for your recognition of the complex characters and passion about the story that could have so many possible endings. ✨ For me, I could do with another 2-3 seasons to wrap up things. Wish Jaime and Brienne had stayed together as a couple, went to KL together, and she had become the queenslayer. Still love the whole GOT world and characters so much!!! 🐺🐉🦁🦌

Flexorcist

Your insight has been the best amongst reactors. You really understand Westeros. Somehow fans expects characters to act with logic which is very far from what happens in the real world (which GOT always mimics). The only issue for me is the pacing but overall what happened is very realistic.

It’s Angie

I can’t wait for house of the dragon, and the second season is about to come out so it’s perfect timing :) also it’s a finished story in the book unlike GOT, and in my opinion that makes for a better storyline/plot.

Richard B

I can get behind the way Sandor went out. Cersei, a pile of bricks. No

Christian

This episode is trash ngl lol it's like the total opposite of what everybody wanted and not in a good surprising way but in a wtf was that way. HOTD is truly back to form of the early GOT seasons, Season 1 is great and Season 2 will be incredible.

Reaction Junkie

Drink every time Jon says "my queen" lol

It’s Angie

Omg HOTD will be amazing, so excited for season 2

I❤️movies&tvshows

He was definitely trying to poison her. In the last episode Tyrion said please don’t. He knew what Varys was capable of

Bulletproof

First, I think things were rushed (fast travel, ect) at the end bc all the main characters were making 1 million dollars per episode. Large cast + large production cost hurts in the end. That is I believe why episodes kept getting longer with less episodes, and less detail in the show. Which is an abrupt change to how the show started, so people weren't happy with it, but I believe it's money driven. Also, people who were shocked by Dany didn't pay attention. They justified Dany cruelty because it was targeted at "bad people" for a long while. She would grin at evil things, and crucify ppl, or burn people and it was dismissed bc they were 'bad' for several seasons (slavers ect). It took so much work to pull her back all the time, but once she started losing people she cared about, it took more and more to pull her back, until she snapped.

Elizabeth D.

My understanding is that the white horse was the one Harry Strickland, the leader of the Golden Company, was riding.

Elizabeth D.

Jaime in the hot tub: “I had to murder the mad king because he was about to burn King’s Landing and kill innocent people.” Also Jaime this episode: “ I’ve never cared for the people, innocent or otherwise.” Some stellar writing there.

Gnarlybudz

Did that. Blacked out

mgamer327 .

there's a compilation video regarding clues of Dany always wanting to take an impulsive "mad" route, dating back from season 2 on up. She ALWAYS needed an advisor to stop her impulses.

Terrence Smith

When I first watched this series, I was wondering if they were going to make Daenerys the ‘main villain’ simply because I thought it made the most sense, and I was surprised so many people rooted for her. I almost bought into it, wanting a Disney type ending with her and Jon and maybe her letting go of her quest for the iron throne, but I was happy the story went this way. When you look back on her story, she’s very hypocritical, entitled, her first instincts is to burn cities to the ground, and I never liked how she handled that situation with the woman whose village was destroyed by Drogo in season 1. Burning her alive. When Khal Drogo vowed to gRape and enslave Westeros, this is basically what people have been rooting for with Dany the series. It’s a story about how we buy into charismatic rulers because we see things from their perspective. I think the writers were brave going through with this story beat, and I’m glad GoT didn’t shy away from making the audience question themselves.

Chris

All I can think of is Ellaria Sand chilling in the dungeon, totally forgotten.

Hailey ✨

I absolutely disagree with the mad queen arc. It destroyed everything Dany has ever been and ever believed in. She is not the kind of person would abandon their morals and go against everything they are as a person in an instant just for revenge. She didn’t care about the iron throne, she cared about helping people and making the world a better place, breaking the wheel! She postponed her conquering of Westeros to make sure the people of Essos she had freed did not slip back into slavery. They destroyed her character this season. I’ve posted a video about the “Real Dany” in discord, I hope you guys will give it a chance and see that murdering thousands of innocent people that she planned to rule is not something Dany could’ve ever done. I think it would’ve been too good to be true for Dany to do everything right and just and still end up on the throne, and a betrayal of GOTs nature if this had a fairy tale ending. I will say more once you finished the last episode!

JG

100% agreed. It could've been MUCH worse as the producer's initial pitch to HBO was a movie trilogy after Season 6 to wrap everything up so they could work on their Star Wars project. (They compromised at 8) The irony being that Disney fired them shortly before the finale aired, so they rushed it all for nothing. They also went back on their word with George R.R. Martin on not rushing the series, which was the main reason why he refused to option ASOIAF to Hollywood for many years. Absolute f'n clowns who proved their incompetence after the source material ran out.

Chris

She was supposed to become the "mad queen", it was an obvious plan from early on. But they needed an extra season to make it believable. Season 8 hit all the bullet points it was supposed to, but did it way, way too fast for any of it to fully make sense.

JG

Even Lena Headey said that Cersei deserved a much more gruesome death.

Hailey ✨

I disagree 🤷🏻‍♀️ where did it seem so obvious early on?

Ashtrid

I saw this turn with Dany early on and it surprised me that others didn't. I loved her just like everyone else but she's always done this, it was just easier to get behind when she was killing slavers and bad men. From the moment she got Drogo on her side she's been power hungry but because she was freeing slaves in Essos it was easier to root for her. But when she got in Westeros, her ego got to big and she was gonna go for that throne one way or another. Seasons 7&8 weren't the best and some characters just weren't acting like themselves and took weird turns. However, and no spoilers for the finale, I'm not really mad at where most end up. They just rushed the story and didn't lay it out well for people to catch up with what I saw coming a while ago.

Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
>>140336187

Even if she'd done it because they didn't surrender, I'd have been more open to that. The problem was the logic of "the bells made her snap". Like "all of a sudden all her trauma flashed before her and boiled up causing full blown clinical psychosis". I suppose it happens, but establish that the bells are a trauma trigger for her before this, instead of just telling us it's a trauma trigger. Maybe take a couple more episodes to add a couple more scenes of her depressed like she was in that one to fully establish that the shift was ramping up to delusion.

Jim Schmitz

Love seeing Mr. raise his arm to the camera. Guess that's about the only thing no one else has said.

Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
>>140324692

I think I was just more shocked at the literal scene of having the bells ringing and then she is supposed to be "snapping" right it that moment. For why?

Jayden K

Mad Queen Dany? I'm all for it. Normal queen to mad queen in like 3 episodes? Absolutely not long enough. There needed to be so much more character development.

Bulletproof

Season 2 - "When my dragons are grown we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who have wronged me. We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground." --- There were a lot of signs between those moments.

NF

Season 5: Locks up her dragons because one of them accidentally killed a child. Foreshadowing is not character development. You have to make make escalation of her actions believable, not just foreshadow it.

Bulletproof

We don't know that it was in the moment, honestly. Right before the battle Tyrion talks about the bells and stopping. She never agrees w/ him. Secondly, she tells Grey Worm "you'll know when it's time" ... and he never is shocked at what she does. I've always assumed he knew it was coming.

Bulletproof

Season 2 - "When my dragons are grown we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who have wronged me. We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground."

Hailey ✨

That’s your only evidence? Because she got upset and made ONE comment that she would come back and take revenge because her other choice was to starve to death and watch her people die? Not a strong enough case to murder an entire city and go all mad queen.

Hailey ✨

She is a dragon. You expect her not to bite when her children (her followers) are threatened?

Peter K

It went in a direction no one really wanted, and many comment that it wasn't believable, it went against who she was. But she always wanted to rule, she made that very plain, and as you accumulate more power in pursuit of that goal, it changes you. I don't think she 'snapped' when the bells tolled, she made her decision when she was with Jon the night before. When he could not get beyond the whole incest thing, and she said, 'it will be fear,' she fully intended to wreak havoc. Too much loss, no one left she could trust, it was almost inevitable that she lose it. People change, like many a tragic hero, they start out wanting to do good, but end up doing just the opposite.

Ashtrid

I totally get that. Believe me, I am by no means saying all the reasonings make sense. The motivations and actions to things are very weird the last couple of seasons. We definitely needed the extra 10 episodes they cut to expand the story for certain. Like I said, the end result I am ok with but how we got there is for sure a hot mess lol

Terrence Smith

In the hot tub scene, he also mentions how the mad king ordered to bring him his fathers head. That was what ultimately made him decide to kill Aerys

Amanda Sargent

🤣 What you gonna do with all that dragon inside your wagon?! 🤣🤣🤣😎🥰

Ljh

To answer you're question about the fire burning stone, dragon fire can melt stone. And steel(how Balerion forged The Iron Throne). It burns hotter.

taizhu

Hi, as someone who read the books--I definitely don't hate Daenerys. I understand exactly how she got to this point. Actually, I ended up hating the showrunners not any of the characters--because they rushed the ending of the show, rather than having this build more slowly. Season 7 and 8 should have each had 10 episodes. That would have felt better. It was just so rushed.

Batman

Oh Whew. I'm glad you're not disappointed in the arc of the finale. I never was. It's an astounding masterpiece of a show.

Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
>>140324692

Then Dan Weiss shouldn't have said that as the reasoning in the behind the episode, basically canonizing in the show that's why.

Terrence Smith

Hating the people who made something you enjoy because you think they stumbled on the ending is pretty wild

Terrence Smith

But you can take any of her actions good and bad and use that as foreshadowing or character development.

Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
>>140311434

The only thing I would correct is after they cherry picked from the source material too much. I think GRRM wanted to try and finish by like a 13th season, but they also cut corners in adaptating that drastically changed storyline trajectories, in a way GRRM couldn't reconcile with anyway. Imagine getting your start as a writer working for TV, then leaving to write novels explicitly because you want a medium without limits, only to have those very limits/limiting later decimate your life's work. He is a champion for keeping his composure about his disappointment and proving kind heartedness by not jumping on the D2 hate train lol.

Mama Browsss

One of my favorite theories was that Arya would kill Cersei, wearing Jamie’s face. I didn’t want Jamie to die, but I thought that would be sick!

Mama Browsss

When I first watched I hated this episode. But imo, when you’re able to binge, it’s like a long movie and it doesn’t bother me as much that they rushed it.

joy conner

I didn’t like her snapping at first but who likes it when their hero becomes a villain. We let slide all The murders she performed when we didn’t care about the people but then there was a point we realize uhh that’s too much but she was murdering people who didn’t deserve long before she got to kings landing remember when she killed a “master” who opposed slaver and fought against unknowingly? That was wrong. Sam’s dad AND brother that was wrong she hurt. Some liken her reign to Hitler I’m sure in the beginning phase people had no idea how far Hitler go they just wanted a champion who would fight for them. Well That went haywire. but when do you get off the train when they start killing people you like? And as far as Jamie and his sister …from The womb to the tomb.

Monkey D. Tomy

Of course daenerys didnt do the right thing. Killing innocent including children is sick and that makes her evil.

Jonathan D

Cersei shouldn't have killed Missandei! That's what she gets! I don't blame Daenerys one bit for burning the city to the ground, good for her. Also, I think Arya should have been the one to kill Cersei, that's my only gripe about this episode. Nevertheless, awesome reaction!!!

Jonathan D

I totally disagree with your summation. 7 and 8 were awesome seasons!

TealSummers

Yall calling Sansa little finger Jr, wtf? UM, try to see it from her point of view rather than just calling her little finger. It's best for the NORTH that Jon has the iron throne. She's NOTHING like little finger, she just learned how to harness information, but her motives are nothing like his. Can't believe you guys are calling her that.

TealSummers

Varys is loyal to the REALM not to a ruler. His loyalty has never been solely placed in a ruler UNLESS he believed that ruler was good for the realm. Knowing this it would be smart to consider his viewpoint.

ShittyShittyGameGang

After multiple watches, I feel alot better about this episode than I did the first time.

Bulletproof

You have to think about what happened in the next episode as well. Grey Worm was under orders to kill them, even after they surrendered. He didn't have time to talk to her before that. So, that was the order, before the battle even started. I had to wait until they posted the next ep before I could say that lol

MightyBigMeech

Yall keep saying Cersei loved her kids more than anything. Don't be so gullible. Cersei tried to justify her own selfish, evil/hateful acts by saying she did it for her kids. When in reality, she did it for herself. She definitely loved herself more than anything/anyone. Think about it. Joffrey was murdered because Cersei raised him to be a monster. Teaching him to lie, act like a brat, and take no responsibility for his own actions. She never once disciplined him. Which in turn, led to him growing up to be hateful and evil just like his mother. Which then led to people hating him and plotting his death. Marcella gets murdered because Prince Oberyn gets killed by the Mountain while fighting for Tyrion. Who was wrongfully on trial for Joffreys murder. Which Cersei knew he didn't commit but wanted her brother dead so bad that she blamed him anyway. Then Tommen kills himself because Cersei murdered Margeary, whom he loved, and other innocent people. Cersei literally murdered them for her own selfish reasons and for revenge, even though she knew Tommen didn't want that. So in turn, Tommen takes his own life because he couldn't deal with that. And then, Cersei claims to want her and her unborn baby to live, when she's the reason they're about to die. Cersei had plenty of opportunities to surrender or leave the capital throughout the series but her hunger and thirst for power wouldn't let her. I'm sorry but if you really love your children more than anything, wouldn't you be willing to sacrifice your own selfish needs in order to save their lives? Like I said, Cersei loved herself more than anything.

Tyrone Bigguns

Arya killing Cersei would have been terrible. She already has the Nightking notch on her belt. It would have made the whole series about her. She already has too many Mary Sue moments... a 13 year old girl who can defeat the greatest warriors of all time, and a 1000 year old ice devil, because she was smacked with a broom by a waif.

Maria

you know what I just realized... Robert Baratheon created all this chaos, didn't let Lyanna live happily with the one she loved, which made Aegon Targarian become Jon Snow, started a rebellion not for the realm but to destroy house of the Dragon, cause he was angwy; couldn't be at least nice to Cersei, couldn't raise a decent son. Ignorance is fkin evil

Jonathan D

I agree! Also, I disagree with the writers' view that Arya was the one to kill the Nightking. It should have been JON SNOW!!!

Chaz D

This episode never gets any easier to watch. I don’t think I’ll ever be convinced that Dani would do what she did in this episode. Despite there being signs a long the way, I still think her becoming a Mad Queen was rushed and out of nowhere. Burning thousands of children and innocent families just doesn’t seem like something that was consistent with everything we came to know about her.

Mo

This is the episode that makes us hate GOT and just not even wanna think about it 😂 cuz that character change for Dani just made no sense. And on top of that the fact that the HBO and even George were cool with doing a lot more seasons but the writers just ended it early cuz they wanted to go do other stuff UGH

TC24

Yea but trying to get Tyrion to commit treason while Jon is about to head south with her doesn’t put him in the safest position, she said so herself “stark men don’t last well in the south” so let me start some infighting that could result in my brother losing his head if Dany feels threatened? She basically did what little finger did season 1, pitting the starks and lannisters against each other right before Ned has to become hand and go south.

Saskk

Interesting insights, but the scene doesn't really work.

Saskk

Commit war crimes to save a friend you directly put in danger. Good plan

Saskk

The characters don't need to be logical. But the deployment of their behavior which has been built up for 8 seasons should be logical. It isn't. Jon supporting a tyrant for mere lust goes directly against his entire arc

Victatchewan
>>140467567

To add a bit of nuance, Robert didn't know Lyanna loved Rhaegar. Or at least what's presented leads us to believe Robert thought she was stolen

Saskk

They are calling her Littlefinger Jr because she is plotting. Good or bad makes no matter

Saskk

Yes Mr. Nobody. Kill 100, 000 to avenge one zealot. Fair

Saskk

Seems some think she should have done it earlier so poor super important Missandei would have to die :( ;)

Flexorcist

You got your opinions, i have mine. But it isnt as far fetched as you think. They mentioned it a lot that its about the Dany’s dragons plus she is a hot woman. How many men in real life killed people because of their hot partner?Helen of Troy “the face that launched a thousand ships” ring any bells? Pun intended. Its a common story trope. Plus Jon literally betrayed the nights watch for a pretty girl seasons before.

Maria
>>140467567

Still, you don't start a war without figuring out what really happened, but also, we wouldn't have many shows without characters making stupid mistakes 🙄

Audra Muncy

This is the twelfth time I have watched game of thrones. I enjoyed watching you you guys. I still get emotional every time I rewatch with the reactors I watch. I think she had this in her the entire time we just thought she was doing it for good reasons in the slave cities. This would have worked better if they had made more episodes of her going mad.

Cami O'Cain

a lot of people will say the character change was sudden but, as rewatching is a good amount of times, there are signs from end of S7 to S8. And as you said she has always talked about burning them all. And if you take it all the way back to the beginning of her storyline, never once has had it easy. So in a way, it’s not surprising, but still, so unnecessary.

Adam Ramirez

There are things about a few character arcs I was thrilled about, I still loved this episode and fully supported Danny going mad queen after losing everything and nobody appreciating her. I’m glad you guys are able to appreciate the great moments in this final season, however rushed it might feel.
