I loved all these old movies that created these fantastical worlds. Especially all the ones with puppetry. I'm sure you've probably already gotten these recommendations, but I'd recommend Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and Return to OZ. They give the essence of kids movies, but offer a little more darker themes.

i did a little too but my really heavy crush while 6-14 year old was Winonna Ryder from Beetlejuice and then Edward Scissorhands but as i became a teenager it became Salma Hayek in From dusk to dawn and then Jessica Alba in Dark angel and Idle hands

I feel ya Mrs. October. It's been 40 years since Artax lost to the Swamp of Sadness, and I'm still not okay. They showed us this movie in school when it came out on VHS (when I was in 1st grade) - FIRST GRADE and I gotta watch this horse get taken by a metaphor for depression? Really!? By the way, if you ever want to know why GenXers are as messed up as we are, consider that in addition to fistfights on the reg inschool, we also watched Artax drown in the Swamp of Sadness and the Challenger space shuttle blow up on live TV in our classrooms within a year of each other - and at the time our teachers knew next to nothing about helping 8 and 9 year olds deal with that kind of stuff 😂
