Title: Lucenti Kit

A/N: Greetings, humans. Hope you’ve all been doing well. and Happy Thanksgiving to all my Americans! Just a brief announcement.

I’ve been trying to finish the last bits for book 3. It’s not a lot of stuff, but dragging it on has caused me a lot of vexing anxiety. So, I’ll be taking the next chapter off and be back next week. I planned to write a couple of shorter chapters to finish the work, but as you may have noticed, that hasn’t really worked out XD

Enjoy the 3.5k chappy :)

---------------------------------------------------------

Kai stared at his friends’ complicit grins. A squeaky chirp cut the lingering haze of Elijah’s departure. His eyes itched from rubbing; not nearly enough to mistake the bundled blanket in Flynn’s arms.

A pink, blind noodle of a body with little nubs for paws and a stubby tail wriggled among the folds. The kit squeaked its displeasure at the sudden draft. It glowed no brighter than a firefly in Raelion’s dense essence. Even so small, the presence of a natural-born beast was unmistakable.

“Isn’t it adorable?” Rain had somehow moved beside him, shaking a teal paper bag filled with purplish leaf-looking bits. “Petal chips?”

“…thanks.” Kai picked one and chewed, unable to say how it tasted, only the sticky sugar on his fingers. Inwardly, he groaned.

I just left them unsupervised for half a day.

The opinionated noodle gave a reedy peep as Flynn set the wool bundle on the kitchen table with anxious care. Rewrapping the blanket, he petted the whisper-fine peach fuzz. The kit nosed at his hand with clumsy insistence, mouth open in search. “Uhm… I think it might be hungry again.”

Rain dashed back, switching the teal bag for a small glass dropper and a flask of warmed milk. Mana swirled inside the glass. “Here.”

“Did you check the temperature?”

“I stored it right after heating it earlier.”

Flynn tested a drop on his wrist and nodded. “Here you go, lil bud.”

The kit fit inside his palm. Its pea head looked comically large on the tiny body. Soft a mip-mip quietened the squeaks as it gurgled with earnest effort, drop by drop. Its tail gave a wobbly twitch with each swallow.

“Sorry, we didn’t mean to hijack your birthday. Happy fifteen!” Flynn offered him an apologetic smile, still focused on not spilling a drop. “We have to feed it every three hours for the next couple of weeks. It should get easier after. And I’ve also prepared a present for you!”

“It’s my fault, actually.” Rain looked away from the feeding noodle and dipped his head. “I wanted to keep it a surprise. It was too late to delay once I found out it fell on your name day.”

Kai scrubbed a hand over his face. “That’s fine. You don’t need to apologize. I wasn’t expecting a party or gifts.” He couldn’t say he didn’t enjoy them, but, to his own mild surprise, he genuinely didn’t care. When he’d rolled out of bed this morning, he’d thought it an ordinary day; anything beyond a casual happy birthday already counted as a bonus.

Was I the only one who forgot the date?

Regardless, a larger issue occupied his mind—a tiny, gurgling, yipping issue. The kit looked much like many baby mammals: sealed eyes and hairless except for the patchy fuzz, still more ugly than cute.

Even if mana does weird stuff with physiology, it can’t be more than a couple weeks old. Where did they find it?

Kai considered himself decently learned in zoology, though his knowledge skewed toward tracking and hunting adult beasts rather than identifying newborns. Kits weren’t usually found lying around—much less awakened ones. From the tip of its poking fangs as it fed, it must be a small carnivore species, with a long body in proportion to its stubby legs.

Please, don’t tell me…

A glance at his beaming friends provided the answer. His mouth opened and closed, words and clues falling into place.

Why am I even surprised? Of course, Rain picked the cute, fuzzy animal…

Stifling the urge to smack his own face, Kai sighed. Surely, he would have anticipated this if Elijah hadn’t broken into his life. And now, the butler had left for Spirits knew how long…

Time for damage control. What do they even plan to do with it?

Kai sank into a chair. “You chose the Lucenti Kit from the Trials’ reward?”

Rain snapped his head up, a little abashed. “Hmm, yeah… I didn’t need any of the other rewards. And it looked so tiny. I couldn’t just leave it there alone.”

Naturally…

“Have you thought about what you’ll do with it after?” He tightened his tone to avoid sounding patronizing. If the academy placed the kit in the top five prizes, it couldn’t be an ordinary species. “It’s a beast reared for taming or bonding. It may look helpless now, but it’ll grow. You can’t keep it around without a dedicated skill. Unless you plan to bond with it?”

“I did consider it.” Rain drummed his fingers, somehow looking even more guilty. “Even if I were free to take a familiar, I couldn’t choose a landbound beast. So I gave it to Flynn.”

You… what?

His gaze whipped to his suspiciously quiet friend.

The kit had gotten its belly full and curled up in Flynn’s palm with a soft peep, leaving him no excuse for distraction. “Uhm, well… I also only found out today.”

And you couldn’t tell him it was a bad idea?

One breath. Two breaths. Kai bit his cheek. Despite looking like a rushed decision, was it really his place to criticize them?

And it might not be necessarily bad if this is what he wants. They must have talked through it. No way Rain just picked it because it looked cute?

Kai axed that line of thought; no point in mulling on past events, anyway. Better if he focused on the future. “Uhm, so… what kind of beast is it?” He scratched his forehead with a thumb. “A lucenti kit should be like a weasel or ferret?”

“Closer to a stoat,” Flynn said, leaping at the chance to switch topics. “At least, that’s the unawakened breed it resembles most. Its eyes should open in the next two weeks. The academy said they’ll provide all food and essentials for this academic year. You should see the grounds and facilities they have available for tame beasts. Most students’ companions stay there. Some are truly enormous.” He tucked in the snoring noodle. “This little guy should become quite smart and mischievous, but it shouldn’t grow too large.”

“It’ll also change its coat each winter. Isn’t that incredible?” Rain placed a shell with a sound ward over the kit, voice high in excitement. “I knew land dwellers were diverse, but I didn’t realize there were so many curious species. I’ll show you. We stopped to borrow the recommended texts.”

A stack of books thudded onto the table: general guides on beast rearing, breeding, handling and bonding, topped by a weathered encyclopedia on awakened mustelids.

“The academy refused to tell me how they got the kit. They couldn't even remember when the last one passed through Raelion, so there was no manual specific for them.” Flipping pages, his scowl eased as he found an illustration. Time had yellowed the paper and muted the colors, but not the details: a pure-white stoat peeked from the fresh snow. It had tiny rosy paws, a button nose and a gold-tipped tail curled behind it. “This is their ermine coat in winter. We’ll have to wait a year to see it. I wonder how it feels to touch…”

Kai nodded along, his attention drawn to the written text.

Lucenti Mustela Erminea, also known as Lucenti Stoats or Ermine, were officially recorded in the Index Bestiaries in the summer of 3792 AL, after the expansion eastward across the Goglin Woodland led by Consul Iudicious Almeria against the belligerent orcish hordes…

Kai skimmed over the paragraphs of historical references and patriotic drivel. The author looked more fond of reconstructing past accounts than the living beasts.

…stealthy ambush hunters, a notoriously challenging prey to all but the most skilled Green trackers. Adults mature at the peak of Yellow, though specimens have been recorded to cross the threshold…

…Lucenti Ermines were believed extinct in the Merian territories after their pelts became highly prized among the Great Houses as symbols of Moonblessed purity during the Immaculate Century.

…In the spring of 4776 AL, nearly four centuries after the last recorded sighting, a surviving population was discovered within the inland Mirror Moor. The hedge researchers noted the innate predispositions and abilities of this population appeared strengthened, though these findings have not been substantiated by scholars of high blood. Thus, theories of long-term adaptation and unconfirmed mutations remain uncertain.

…main traits include exceptional Perception and stealth magic, an innate Light affinity and territorial nature, known to hold grudges against specific sapients who wronged them for decades—

The page flipped before he could finish reading.

Just as I was getting to the good part…

Kai swallowed his protests. From the authors’ tone, the old tome might not even be that reliable. His friends' race to share every useful and random fact about the kit’s bright future distracted him. Luckily, only half of Rain’s reasons involved how soft and adorable the stoat would eventually look. Flynn seemed more overwhelmed, though still excited.

For once, it’s actually not my problem to figure out. Oh… Hey there, bud.

“Mrow.” Hobbes blinked on the table, silver coat fluffed up, tail swishing the air. His violet eyes traveled between the bundled blanket and his chief dispenser of treats.

Got off your nap to say hi? Not like we took a pivotal specialization less than an hour ago.

Kai ran his fingers down his familiar’s back, a knot of thrumming emotions and sensations. The milestone had changed something, though he couldn’t quite define it. Subtle yet deep. Almost their bond had gained a new taste.

Wait, is he jealous?

“Are you hungry, bud?” Flynn brought Hobbes onto his lap as the cat stalked across the table. “I bought this for you.” He held out a stick of salted salmon. “What do you say? Is it to your liking?”

Hobbes turned away with a sniff, never interrupting his dirty look at the intruding kit. His principled fasting lasted a full five seconds before his nose twitched. With a lick at his paw, he devoured the offering and it in three begrudging nibbles. Then, he ate a second one for good measure.

“Meow.”

Flynn scratched his neck, inviting a reluctant purr. “I’ll make sure to buy more. This little guy here is our new addition. I still haven’t picked a name. Maybe you could help. Got any ideas?”

His whiskers whipped away from the kit with a disinterested growl, and he twisted to guide the scratches in the right spot.

“Who else could watch over and teach your little brother half as well?” Flynn produced another fish stick. “You’re the only one I can count on for this.”

“Meow…” Well, Hobbes couldn’t deny that. None of the humans could be relied upon. He’d always been too magnanimous for his own good.

He does have a—

A sharp pain snapped him back. Kai recoiled from the flood of sensations brushing his mind like a rubber band whipped taut. Hissing, he glanced at the angry red spot on his forearm.

Did Rain just pinch me?

His roommate innocently hummed. “You looked lost, craning your neck like Hobbes.”

“I what…? Hmm… thanks.” Kai rubbed his arm, unsure what exactly had happened. He watched Flynn coax Hobbes from a grumpy cat into a responsible older brother, keeping his mind carefully separated from the bond.

I’ll have to test this.

“Thank you, bud.” Flynn smiled as the furrball fell to the flattery and snacks. “I don’t know how I’d do without you.”

Who’s playing who anymore? They have each other wrapped around their little finger and paw. Wait… am I third-wheeling?

“Meow.” Hobbes settled on the table, curiously peeking at the snoring kit. Idle glimpses of the noodle bolting at his command trickled through his thoughts.

Spirits save us. What have you done?

“We should probably go meet Valela.” Flynn stood up, stretching his back. “She’ll begin wondering if Mat got kidnapped again if we take longer.”

Ah. Ah. Don’t you start… no, wait! How do you even know? Do you actually understand Hobbes?

Glaring at his chuckles, Kai grabbed his coat from the rack. Another matter to investigate for later. “I’m ready to go.”

“I need to change first. Back in a minute.” Rain rushed to his room, scarf winding in his trail.

Doesn’t he keep clothes in his bracelet? Or does his wardrobe no longer fit inside? Hmm… I’m almost scared to see his room.

Flynn set the bundled kit in an empty bowl, ripping a page from a journal to scribble a note for Rob or Alden. “Do you mind if I leave the kit here for a couple hours? It’ll probably sleep better. I’ll come back to feed it if we run long.”

“Sure… If you are certain.”

“I am, Hobbes says he got it.” Flynn petted the vain fluffball. “The little guy couldn’t be in better paws.”

That’s what worries me.

Kai threw a rueful glance at Hobbes, but didn’t delve into the bond. The kit could likely survive a couple days alone. Despite the names, natural-born beasts weren’t like mana-less species or even awakened animals.

What an odd day…

“Mat.” Flynn balanced on his feet. “Again, I’m sorry for taking over your birthday. I had this whole day planned, then, well… stuff happened, and I couldn’t delay the kit.”

“That’s fine. I honestly don’t need anything.”

“Yes, you told me so.” He squinted down at him. “You had forgotten about the date, hadn’t you?”

Kai snorted and turned toward the door, refusing to dignify the jab with an answer. “Don’t be ridiculous. I learned Mnemonic Mastery. I just didn’t consider it important.”

“Right… so I imagine you don’t want your present?”

“Now, how did you jump to that? I’m not so rude as to refuse a gift when you’ve already prepared it.” Kai scanned Flynn’s pockets for clues. “Where did you put it?”

“I’ll give it to you later. Valela helped with most of it, so it’s from the both of us. Originally, she wanted to buy you a wand. I hope you don’t mind that I convinced her that was a terrible idea.”

“A wand?” His eyebrows shot up. He had indeed planned to get one before Elijah handed him a magic sword. They placed notoriously among the expensive enchanted tools. A crazy gift idea. He’d still have had to have bought a better one himself, and if Valela matched his price range… Spirits, better not to even imagine it. “I’m actually relieved you stopped her.”

“Any day, man.” Flynn grinned. “But if she wants to splurge a bit on my next birthday, don’t feel obliged to repay the favor. Unlike you, I’m dirt poor. Uhm, do you know how high the bounty on your identity has reached? It hit three figures. The fancy bloods are nuts.”

More great news.

“I’d rather live as if they don’t exist.”

“Wise choice. Why should we consider them? But speaking of terrifyingly crazy people, does your master want…”

Kai gave a curt shake. “Elijah has left.”

“Oh… sorry? Why— I mean, when did he leave?"

“Just before you arrived. He delayed for my birthday.”

“Oh… that was nice of him. Are you alright?”

“It’s my birthday and I’m getting a present.” Kai shrugged with a smile. “I’m great.”

“Mat, you know…”

“Jokes aside, I’m really okay. It was way better than last time. I’ll meet him again.”

“I’m happy for you then. Don’t hate me, but I hope he doesn’t reappear too soon. I never thought I’d become paranoid checking my own shadow.” His shoulder clenched with a shiver. “All these years, I thought I was exaggerating when I teased you about your mysterious master. But I completely undershot it.”

“I’m ready, guys!” Rain came bounding back, wrapped in a green squirrel scarf and matched floppy hat. In his arms, he held a second red-and-white checkered scarf, a sunny yellow sweater and an orange pompom hat. “Sorry, I took a bit to decide.”

Kai looked him over. “Are you going to wear all those?”

“Of course not. These ones are for you.”

“Why would I wear—”

“Did you forget you’re still a wanted student? We can’t let you get jumped by those leeches. Any risk is too high.” Rain held up the outfit with a far too pleased, pointy smile.

“I think you’ll look great,” Flynn added with a chuckle. “No one will suspect you of being the infamous first rank. C’mon, you don’t want to keep Valela waiting, do you?”

Kai edged a step back toward the door. “What if I ruin them again like last time?”

“No big deal. I bought these for you.” Rain practically glowed. “I’ve always wanted to have friends I could offer birthday gifts to. I’ll give you the others later.”

Others? How many did you buy?

Kai briefly considered making a break for it, but the meddling rank-hunters still blockaded the dorm atrium. With a heavy exhale, he snatched the clothes from Rain’s hands.

*

“Please don’t ask.” Kai stiffly lowered himself onto the cushion of the carved chair. They’d reserved a private booth on the third floor of the Wing Aurea—a room and table with silver cutlery large enough to host three times their number.

Valela discreetly leaned to the side to look him over. Her lips quivered with a suppressed smile. “Happy fifteenth. You look very… bright.”

“Doesn’t he? Positively sunny,” Flynn agreed, clapping his shoulder and doing a poor job of hiding his guffaws. Beside him, Rain rested an elbow on the table. His hand covered his smile in a flimsy pretense of innocence.

Kai tore off the scarf and pompom hat with a glare before turning back to Valela. His nose caught a wisp of lavender mingled with the clean scent of sea air. “Thank you.” He ran a hand, trying to tame his spiky hair. “I’d say you look good too. But you always do.”

“I…” Valela smoothed the cuff of her blue sleeve, flushing. “Thank—”

“Ugh!” Flynn suddenly hacked like he was choking and reached for the crystal water pitcher. “Sorry. Swallowed wrong. Don’t mind me. I’m good.”

Rain lowered his face into both palms to cover his expression.

“You’re too nice,” Valela mumbled. She twirled a loose auburn lock before hastily reaching for the paper menu. “Please, order anything you want. If Lys asks you, we spent the whole day at the library. The meal is on me. I had more planned for your birthday, but students are still looking for you. So…”

When did she start planning if she had to redraw them?

“This is already plenty enough.” Kai stopped her rambling with a smile. The only three people who knew his real identity and his full of professionally cooked food? What else could he ask for his birthday?

Amidst food and lively chatter, time slipped by, plates emptied, and warmth settled into the booth. Eventually, it was time to unwrap his last present.

“Are you sure we shouldn’t wait for Flynn to return?” Valela asked. “He handled most of it.”

“You know, he said the same thing about you. Either way, he won’t mind,” Kai said. After an hour of subtle teasing, Flynn and Rain had ‘gone to the bathroom’ and vanished, leaving them alone. “So what is it?”

“It’s really nothing much.” Valela reached into her spatial purse and set two metal cubes on the table, interlocking lines and arrays layered over every face.

Huh? Where have I seen these before?

“Are those…?” Kai picked one up to study the runes. His thumb pressed a raised square. With a click, crisp voices filled the booth.

“—sure this is working? I can’t see any lights…”

“Honey, I think it’s recording,” Mouli’s low rumble interrupted.

“Hey, Kai. It’s Mom. You probably recognize my voice.” She giggled. “How are you doing, sweetheart? We have received your letters. I hope you’ve not been skipping any meals—”

“Mom, he’s not a child anymore.”

“Happy birthday, big brother!”

“Kien, sweetie. I told you to wait, so we could say together—”

Alana’s and Ele’s voices intertwined with Kien’s high-pitched protests.

Kai tapped the cube to stop the playback. His throat tightened. After months without hearing their voices, he found himself strangely emotional. “Thank you. It’s a very thoughtful gift,” he managed, taking a sip of water. His gaze fell to the second cube. “And that one?”

“That message is from Kea.”

“Kea? How did you convince her to record one?” Kai cleared his throat. “I’m lucky if I get her to write more than six lines in her letters.”

“That one was really all Flynn,” Valela laughed. “I just helped get it delivered in time. Maybe I should go find those two. I don’t want to intrude—”

“You can stay.” Kai lifted a hand to stop her. “We can listen to them together. If you don’t mind, I mean.”

Valela settled back in her chair. “I think I'd like that.”

Edit suggestion: Almost their bond -> Almost like their bond noddle -> noodle scent of  sea air. (has a line break)

Tftc and Happy Turkey day to my fellow Americans.

Poor guys can't get over how he can say such smooth lines while at the same time being completely blind

Quyan640

It be funny if while taking to V Kai unlocked a skill like [Dense/Oblivious Flirt].

Crapgeezer

So what is a "kit"? I even googled but i still don't really understand how it's used here. I did find kit fox but this animal isn't a fox... So still a bit confusing

Alexander Belousov

"kit" is a word for a newborn of certain small species, such as fox, as you correctly noted. But, it is not limited to foxes. I suppose it is appropriate for weasel/stoat also.

Dizzy

That's the entire reason he can be smooth. Otherwise he'd be bumbling idiot too.

Trevayne

Thanks for the chapter and happy Thanksgiving.

Asheric

Ya, i think it could use a little clarity before he starts calling it a kit. Calling it a pale noodle is a clue that it's not a fox but it would be like calling a random baby animal a puppy before you knew its species

Asheric

at that age, yea... but this is his second life so maybe not?

Sparifankerl

First, he new its species and the "kit" part from the list of rewards so I'm certain he did look it up at least as far as the definition. Just because us readers are occasionally clueless, an intelligent and workaholic character like Mat should be expected to do his homework and make a few quick deductions. Second, look at the 4th definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/kit "1: kitten 2: a young or undersized fur-bearing animal (such as a beaver, fox, or raccoon) also : its pelt" Now you know what the word "kitten" is related to. ;-)

Dion Hier

Does someone know the affinities of Flynn and why the kit might be a good fit?

I have to say, I love the story and I’m such a fan of all the characters but I genuinely dislike Flynn. Can the author make him a little less arrogant/smug/wonder child please? It’s a little frustrating seeing how 1. He always gets whatever he wants with little to no effort - somehow he goes from basically a street rat to a spy/informant to #1 in the military academy for freshman. Where is the supposed struggle for non mainlanders? Somehow he’s so smart and cool that he even got the teacher to create a bet he won. 2. He is always right & never wrong - seriously, has Flynn ever been wrong or made a mistake in the books? Even with his family drama, he comes out squeaky clean and perfect. 3. Smoothly handles all human interactions while Kai flounders away at everything (the clueless anime protagonist role is really stupid and frustrating. I get that he didn’t have romantic experience in a previous life but cmon…) 4. No one ever gets one over on Flynn. Ever. And Kai is the butt of all jokes and a doormat when it comes to Flynn. It’s honestly frustrating. 5. Also why the heck does Flynn understand Hobbs. What’s the point of the bond/familiar skill if Flynn can understand him better than even Kai. Because obviously Flynn can right? What can’t he do… I think I would like Flynn’s character if he had some flaws. If he had challenges and failed things. If he struggled. If he made mistakes. If Kai created boundaries around Flynn’s behavior and Flynn actually apologies for his behavior sometimes. Somehow it seems like the author tried to write a book about Kai but gave Flynn so many of his own characteristics that he can’t help making Flynn the perfect character. Again, I say all this as someone who is a fan of the story. Who loves the characters. Loves the magic system. It’s a bloody shame that somehow we have one secondary character who has to be perfect because the author seems to have fallen in love.

Crapgeezer

Thx! That clears it up for me 😁

Diane And

I agree with the previous comment. I’m a big fan of the story, this world and the characters. But the benefits being given Flynn’s way are just too much in the context of this world. I like Kai’s friendship with Rain. It is a relationship between equals. With Flynn on the other hand: 1. Kai helped him change his profession to a better one. 2. Kai gave him elixirs that enhanced both his lighting and shadow affinities. 3. Kai is paying for his tuition at the academy. The first two items especially are invaluable and equates a lifetime oath of service if given to someone else. And I just don’t see Flynn actually striving to create something on his own and contribute. He is just benefiting from the people around him. And if he can understand Hobbes, then I just don’t see the point of Kai and Hobbes having a bond either.

Nick P

Completely agree. I’ve nearly dropped the story multiple times and it’s solely because of Flynn until I resist because I like pretty much every other aspect.

noel meehan

High shadow affinity and I think some of his general skills and class is specialised towards stealth

MeYouIt

I really like Flynn, and I think some of the complaints about him are overstated. But maybe a Flynn pov chapter would be good? Getting into his thoughts, his insecurities, his doubt. We've seen before that he is really good at hiding those things. But that also makes it so that us as readers don't get to see it most of the time.

Immutably Empty

I believe in book 3 Flynn is mentioned to have good shadow and lightning affinities.

Jim

I think it’s a good match for Flynn less because of the affinities and more because of the stealth and perception. Flynn has a roguish profession and this new bond would match him pretty well. “stealthy ambush hunters, a notoriously challenging prey to all but the most skilled Green trackers” “main traits include exceptional Perception and stealth magic, an innate Light affinity and territorial nature” Chapter 322 Flynn: Shadow: 58 Lightning: 53 Plant: 32 Metal: 30 Minor: Water: 24 (ch 188) Chapter 254 - raising his Lightning affinity by 6 points to 53 and Shadow by 4 to 58

BaguaBrady

I just have to say I have such a different take on Flynn as a character. I think his eleven year old street rat from an abusive home persona set a number of readers against him

Jacob Ogundare

I understand the frustrations with Flynn character, but in this story and even irl I have seen people given every opportunity and squander it and vice-versa, so I am hoping for a side plot where Flynn struggles and grows with all the resources he has been given. Things like aspirations, goals, weaknesses, vices e.t.c we don't rly know much about Flynn other than following Kai.

Jacob Ogundare

Personally I thing Flynn understanding hobbes is in character because he is always perceptive of ppls emotions and actions and my interpretation of this dialogue was since Kai upgraded his bond to be equal now he understands to what extent Flynn understands hobbes but I might have read/interpreted wrong.

Storyflower

his full of professionally cooked food? -> fill

D

Same. I actually stopped reading it awhile ago. I saw a Reddit thread about Flynn and people complaining. But one person said Flynn had gotten better so I thought let’s give it a shot. I’ve caught up now and it’s clear the author loves Flynn more than any other character. The story is basically about the super popular, super skillful, super talented Flynn whose story is being told from the perspective of his personal bank and doormat Kai.

D

The part about Flynn and Hobbes bothers me to no end. Hobbes even calls Flynn his favorite in his POV chapter. There’s genuinely no reason for any of this. Even if he has some great reveal at the end, it’s a waste. Kai and Hobbes have skills named after each other but Flynn is the special one who somehow is so good at anything he can even understand the space cat that Kai couldn’t even touch forever. Also it makes no sense that Flynn can sweet talk Hobbes into liking the new Kit. Hobbes entire thing has been about jealousy and being special. He hated the idea of Kai getting another familiar but 5 seconds and a piece of salmon later, Flynn has convinced Hobbes to look after his kit.

D

I’m tired of this being the excuse for him. Ok so in his pov he has insecurities and issues? That doesn’t mean there is any basis for him to be such a smug and cocky smart mouth who has a rabbits foot shoved up so far his ass, he can literally do no wrong. Look, the author can have his favorite character. He has mentioned before he based certain aspects of Flynn after himself. But he is ruining the story with his characterization of Flynn. Somehow Flynn is so talented that he is the #1 in the martial academy when mainlanders are supposed to be so far ahead of everyone else. Flynn is so smart even he tricked the teachers. He’s so talented that even the douchey mage from the exam thought he’s worth paying attention to. He’s so lucky that when it’s rare for someone to have even one affinity over 50%, he somehow has two (also lightning being more offensive/powerful than everything Kai has except for space). It’s so bloody frustrating.

D

We don’t know much about Flynn? 1. He is a ‘street rat’ whose mum went crazy. He joined in with this craziness and basically blew up the town & helped kill tons of people. But because he helped Kai, he’s forgiven. Except that he was willing to leave Kai tied up. 2. Flynn is so special that he was able to convince Kai that somehow he needed to run away from his hometown/family to help Flynn because he felt like he owed him. Owed him for what? He was part of the anarchists. 3. Flynn is so good at social interactions that he somehow because a spy/informant, he can speak to anyone, he can get anything from anyone, he can trick anyone, he can sweet talk anyone. There are no social interactions Flynn can’t turn into an advantage. 4. Flynn is so talented and perceptive that he can understand Hobbes. Who is Kai’s familiar…who even Kai struggled to understand fully. Obviously this also makes Flynn even Hobbes’ favorite person his own words. 5. Flynn is so talented that he is the number 1 ranked student in the martial academy newbies even being a non mainlander who basically has no actual combat experience, minimal formal education and training. 6. Flynn is obviously also extremely lucky. People rarely have 1 affinity over 50%. Flynn has 2. 7. Flynn is so important to Kai (because Kai apparently can’t talk to people) that even his education is paid for by Kai. Also side note: he’s such an asshole, he was willing to try and date Kai’s oldest sister just so it would annoy Kai. Truly the best person. The author needs to figure out whether he wants the story to be about Kai or about Flynn. It’s frustrating to see someone who is not the main character basically have everything handed to him on a platter, have no faults, no flaws, no mistakes, no repercussions for his behavior and somehow still is a smug and arrogant but loved by everyone. Giving us a POV and saying aww I’m struggling is a bunch of BS. it’s a cop out. Flynn has never dealt with any repercussions for his actions. Honestly, the character is a leech. He is living on the coattails of Kai but the author can’t get rid of him after basing certain aspects of himself into the character.

D

The wild thing I love all the other characters. Every single one of them. I’d read 12 books if it has all these characters without Flynn. He does nothing for the story. He is clearly the authors favorite and absolutely ruins an otherwise fantastic story.

I don't get this, cocky douche thing. He ribs Kai, but thats what friends do? All the things you say about his acomplishments are 10x for Kai. Even more so for his affinities. Kai got special attention from the fucking principle, and number 1 in the whole school.

Hughes Andrew

1. He was an eleven year old. They aren’t exactly known for good decision making or standing up to abusive parents. 2. Are you forgetting the truthseeker who had just arrived. The one who would definitely want to interrogate a person who had repeated contact with a fifth circle mage. Not to mention the rebels still in the jungle, who would know that Kai had been kidnapped by them, and would want him silenced. There were many reasons for Kai to leave for higharbor, Flynn was a minor one. 3. He wasn’t that good at spycraft. He got assigned to an archive on a backwater island. While at that archive he stuffed some papers under his shirt and walked out. The only thing that shows was that he was smart enough to keep quiet during the scholarship program. 4. Is Flynn particularly perceptive or is Kai just that bad? I’ll give you that being sociable is Flynn’s big talent, but it’s also Kai’s big flaw. I don’t think Kai realizes how expressive Hobbes is, or how to read his cues without the bond. 5. I’ve not seen where Flynn ranked number one in martial studies. Most of the evidence points to him being mid. From how he handled the entrance test, to his ranking in the midterm trials. 6. Yeah that high affinity is a bit of an author intervention. But it’s not unprecedented. Kai’s the real outlier. 7. Kai’s rich, and Flynn is both a friend and a good investment. Take out the emotional aspect and consider why Valela sponsors promising islanders. She’s giving them better odds at becoming stronger in order to gain favors with them that can be called in later. Even if Kai was an emotionless robot, pure politics says it’s a good idea to pay for Flynn’s tuition.

Jacob Ogundare

I think the story becomes less interesting if Kai is the only strong character and everyone else (Flynn/Val) are just fodder/damsel in distress. I like Flynn as a character but he needs an arc where a lot of his motivations/vices are revealed also Val, if they are gonna stick around Kai's group. I still think of Flynn as Kai's sidekick where Kai is dragging him around instead of him being his own man. In terms of criticism I think offering some suggestions of what you want from Flynn will make me understand this dislike more. Funny enough the only arc that showed Flynn determination as his own character was breaking away from his parent and literally discarding the path they choose for him to choose his own path l liked that, mostly everything else feels like stagnation.

Flynn hate is astounding here. Reminder to everyone that Kai was about to die during the voice of the ancestors / pirate raid, and Flynn killed his attacker (who was part of his mother’s organization). Flynn actively followed Kai out of the prison and saved his life. If Kai is on a path to be the next Elijah (Blue by 34), he will end up with no companions, and all characters who we’ve seen will fall away like his family. High affinities, maybe they were too high. Other complaints like Kai paying for his tuition (when Kai is extremely wealthy) are comical. Kai could pay his tuition 100x and it wouldn’t outweigh a life debt…

D

You do realize that Kai was in trouble to begin with because Flynn was caught trying to give him info. And then when Kai was caught, he struggled with the thought of letting him go. Kai had to tie him up himself. Regardless of whether Kai will be peerless by the time he reaches blue does not discount the fact that everything else people say about Flynn being a shitty character isn’t true. Because he is the worst written character with the biggest plot armor in the story. Also you severely underestimate how much the author seems to love him. Something tells me Flynn will be high/late stage Green and not far behind Kai into blue. It’s insane that Flynn who had no true training is keeping up with Kai and Valela who basically went through insane training regiments as children. But through sheer wit, charm, arrogance and an overabundance of self love from the author, Flynn has kept up with these two prodigies. It basically invalidates the 5yrs of training Kai had + his struggles in the pocket dimension. Why should anyone struggle if you can keep up with all the front runners without any of their struggles, the only downside being an easy life and being just a couple of years older…

D

Also life debt? Are you bonkers mate? You can’t put someone at risk (and by extension their family, especially the oldest sister), struggle on whether or not to save them, and only then help at the 11th hour and call it a life debt Not to mention that Kai abandoned his family, informed him of the truth seeker and found Flynn a way off the island before he got killed. I think that invalidates any and all debt if there was any to even begin with. Also everyone chiming in on Flynn being a leech and getting his tuition paid for probably also likes to be self-sufficient and make their way in the world. Not to ride off the coattails of their wealthy friends. Never a good look for a character when their biggest contribution is smug arrogance and occasionally buying a snack.

D

1 - He was 14/15. Kai was 11. In a world where you’re an adult at 14, then he’s fully aware of what he’s doing. 2 - Per Kai’s thinking at that time, it was entirely for Flynn’s benefit. Even Reishi tells him leaving is unnecessary. That he can easily be hidden away until the truth seeker leaves and finds the remaining people in the jungle. He left for Flynn. 3 - He becomes Valela’s spy/informant with zero reasoning behind that to begin with. He was basically an unknown entity and somehow wormed his way into that role. I guess he was better than you give him credit for with his spy work in the archive (a role he took on purpose) 4 - Dude it’s a space cat. Kai isn’t that bad at understanding Hobbes through the bond to the point that it should be so obvious. Flynn has somehow been able to perceive & understand complex sentences and thoughts. Makes zero sense. Read the underground portion where Flynn was hiding. He was basically having conversations with Hobbes. Again, makes no sense. Why give the familiar bond (a unique named one) only to say & show that Flynn understands him better and is Hobbes favorite. 5 - I’ll concede this point. I thought it was mentioned that Flynn aced the martial academy mid term exams (not the entrance ones). Also he somehow scored so high even on a team with rain and valela who should have earned the majority of the rewards. Madness. But Flynn was still so smart and creative, he tricks a teacher into creating a super hard exam only he can pass and gets out of that class. 6 - Kai is an anomaly. Absolutely given. But his teachers state at the testing that it’s rare to have even 1 affinity over the elf rated 50%. Even aunty Dora doesn’t have it. But Flynn has 2! Rare ones at that. Shadow and lighting! And of course Kai gives him magical fruit to enhance Flynn even more… 7 - Except there’s no gratitude. There’s basically only give, no take. Why would anyone put up with someone who has no boundaries, simply takes your belongings and does/says whatever he wants. Flynn does not bring anything to the table except talk to people. We’re not seeing growth in the MC because everything in the people area goes to Flynn. Kai sees people, Kai immediately flounders. Flynn is somehow so good, he is better with Kai’s own family than Kai is. The anime protagonist levels of being unable to talk to people only came about after Flynn showed up. Before that look at how Kai interacts with people. The author literally created a deficiency to bring Flynn onboard and then took it 100 levels too far. At this point, the author might as well either 1. Make Flynn the MC or make Kai mute and let Flynn continue to talk to people. What’s the point in having Kai talk when he struggles to talk to anyone without Flynn or understand people without Flynn making jokes at his expense. I sound passionately against the book. But I want to be clear. I adore the books. Genuinely love them. Or I wouldn’t be paying for it. And debating people on the internet lol. But it’s such a shame that one character is so much of an outlier that ruins the books. Or leaves a bad taste at least.

Flynn saving Kai’s life was only half the story. If he didn’t get Kai captured, then the saving his life part would not have been necessary. That is the issue. Hate for Flynn’s character is not the right word. It’s more like he is currently a net negative or at best a wash if you tally what he brings to the table as the supposed sidekick (assuming that it is his intended role). Kai is a great lead. Sure, he was lucky with the abilities he was born with and caught more than his fair share of opportunities. But he also put in the work and then some to get to where he is. What has Flynn done so far? Be the biggest beneficiary of Kai’s (and now even Rain’s) largesse. If Flynn is a character who is meant to stand with Kai long term, with the way things are going, it seems like Kai will be the one opening doors for him all that time and Flynn just waltzes in. That’s a grifter not a sidekick. Even Valela has her own thing going. Why can’t Flynn do the same? Also, has Flynn even acknowledged what Kai has done for him? There was a comment that whatever Kai provided for Flynn can be looked at as an investment. Which is a very valid point. But that is working with the assumption that he will be loyal to Kai. Will he be really?

D

But what did Flynn do to earn them? Somehow he’s basically on par or marginally below Kai, has higher affinity for shadow than Kai, has an offensive lighting affinity when Kai has no real offensive affinity. Kai had 5yrs of hellish tutoring by 5th circle mages. He survived 2yrs alone in a hellscape fighting for his life. He earned it. Flynn has not and is somehow basically one step behind. Rain garnered the attention of the headmaster. Kai only did after they won the midterms. Also somehow Flynn still scored very well even though rain and valela should have taken up most of the points. Jokes are cool and definitely normal amongst friends. But Flynn’s are always at Kai’s expense. He always gets the last word in. He always has the best jokes. Also he has no boundaries. When Kai made his first knife, Flynn took it without even asking. Later author put out a pov saying ah if Kai wanted to stop him, he would have. Only this happened after every comment was bashing/hating Flynn’s actions. Jokes need to have a limit mate. If Kai is so socially slow as the author makes him out to be, then Flynn is basically bullying him in the name of jokes. You can’t have it both ways. Either Kai is fully competent and socially adept (in which case why does he flounder and need Flynn?) or he is so socially/conversationally inadequate that Flynn is verbally beating him up in the name of humor.

D

Not to mention the fact that it wasn’t enough for Kai to just sit there and give everything to Flynn or let him take whatever he wanted. The author needed Flynn to have his own cool familiar. So what better way than to make Rain give him top 5 ranking reward to Flynn. Instead of coming up with a creative use of the reward as someone as rain is supposed to be, the author needed to give Flynn more benefits. Somehow this Kit will grow up to be a terrifying foe, sneaky assassin etc and obviously will enhance Flynn even more. Increase his affinities, give him new ones. Who knows what else a good grifter needs lol Top 5 reward lol. Top 5. For just sitting next to rain and valela do all the hard work. Kai almost died. Multiple times. And Flynn drank a cup of coffee and walked away with a top 5 reward. The authors self love for the character based on himself is just astounding. It’s such a blind spot in an otherwise great story. I would love if Flynn is written off. Made into a villain. Does something useful. Instead of making snide remarks, jabs (jokes) at Kai’s expense and literally just benefiting from the effort of everyone else. Maybe in another universe, he would apologize for his behavior. Maybe Kai can grow a backbone and put up some boundaries too while we’re at it.

Flynn isn't keeping up with Kai though. Flynn is Y1. Kai is Y2. They're world's apart. And Kai is 2.5~ years younger than Flynn. As for the rest of what you said, you just haven't actually read this series if you think those things about Flynn. Kai takes advantage of Flynn WAY more than the other way around. You're basically unhinged in this rant. Flynn's MAYBE familiar, he hasn't even made that decision yet, isn't anywhere close to what Hobbes is. It's maaaaybe a low B tier beast, where Hobbes is literally legendary.

Doug Wills

Flynn is not that much older than Kai. When Kai was 11., Flynn would have been 13/14. Kai is 15 now, and Flynn is 17/18. What are you talking about?

D

He is one tier behind. That is not a world apart. Clearly you’ve not read the book if that’s worlds apart. It would have been different if Kai was Y3 or or if Flynn was multiple tiers behind. And Kai had to go through 5 years of hellish training + 2 years of surviving by the skin of his teeth. Flynn chilled, went through a decent academy program, hooked up with a bunch of people and was basically a grifter. How is that keeping in life with the authors magic system? Please explain how Kai is taking advantage of Flynn lmfao. I’m genuinely curious. Edit: I was responding to doug who deleted his comments after being called out for his insults and because he had the facts wrong on another comment lol.

Doug Wills

He isn't even close to #1 in the martial academy. Hahahahaha, what the fuck are you talking about? You literally just made that up. In fact, we SAW THE RANKINGS, and there was someone on Martial studies WHO FINISHED IN THE TOP 10. He's not even CLOSE to #1 in Martial Studies. You are literally shadow boxing.

D

Mate - no need for insults. But anyways, age gap has been said to be 3. So general math skills there. Also Flynn was an adult at the time. Working his adult job at the archive. He had graduated the academy. Either way whether he was 13 or 14 or 15, he was well and truly old enough to know what was going on and what he was doing.

Doug Wills

Flynn didn't "get Kai captured" he realized something bad was going to happen, that he didn't want to happen, and tried to make sure his friend's family was safe. If Flynn DIDN'T "get Kai captured", Ele probably dies, and Kai and his whole family would have been in danger during the attacks because they wouldn't have known what was going on. What has Flynn done? He abandoned his family when he realized how fucked up they were. He saved Kai's life numerous times. He's an extremely loyal friend. He decided to risk dying to try to get a better profession to be able to be more useful and be able to help Kai in the future. He literally took care of Kai when they lived together. We saw him bring Kai meals when Kai was lost doing whatever nonsense he wanted. This is just a silly question. When Kai disappeared for two years, he continued to train, worked for Valela, checked in on Kai's family for him, and also 100% believed that Kai would come back. When has he acknowledged what Kai has done? Literally at the start of this book they talked about it. The question: Will Flynn be loyal to Kai is literally so crazy I can't believe someone could read this and ask. He ABANDONED HIS OWN FAMILY for Kai. He took care of Kai's family when Kai was gone. He told everyone who knew Kai that Kai would be back. When Kai wanted to go to the mainland, Flynn didn't even hesitate to go with him. Why isn't Flynn doing his own thing? He LITERALLY is. He's training in the martial studies program ON HIS OWN. Kai isn't doing anything to help him out with stuff. But when Kai wants to do research, you know who is happy to help? Flynn. Because of course he is. Of ALL the things to question about Flynn, his loyalty to Kai isn't even remotely close to one.

D

Book 2, chapter 35 shows Kai is 11. Book 2 chapter 63 says that Flynn is 3yrs older. So when the pirates attack that puts Flynn at 14. Again if math is not your strong suit, 11 + 3 =14. Might want to recheck before you insult people. Edit: damn Doug really deleted all his comments after I called out his insults and that he was incorrect in all his statements.

Doug Wills

You're taking "understanding Hobbes" far too literally.

Peter Smith

What a lot of people seem to be forgetting is that Kai's growth is solely due to his curiosity and need to be stronger. If we look back we can see many other characters who have far greater luck and talent than Kai, including that wierd dude who had only 50 luck from birth who somehow could not go in the wrong direction, and never truly failed despite being in a terrible situation. It should also be noted that we were already informed that magic is a hard thing to learn and needs either high talent or high affinities to successfully advance. And Kai is using five distinct forms of magic, one of which being a high rarity and being extremely difficult to consistently train. Flynn on the other hand is not using high rarity skills or difficult to train abilities. Not only that but his abilities are some of the easiest to earn experience from so long as he is in an environment with people, and individuals willing to help train him. Meanwhile at elast a third of Kai's abilities require some elvel of danger to efficiently grow, while the others have a steep learning curve and don't necessarily require help to train. The complaints about Flynn's growth versus Kai's is like comparing an untrained person with a legendary sword versus a boxer with a pair of knuckle dusters and then getting upset that the boxer is dealing more damage than the legendary weapon. In fact multiple times the only reason why Flynn is alive is because of Kai. So of course Flynn's going to grow quickly, he doesn't have any other choice if he's going to jump into things that require massive growth. The difference is solely that Kai has a far greater potential than Flynn, with a wider array of options than the rogue with a silver tongue.

I loathed Flynn in the beginning when we first met him. I hated his personality (stereotypical slimy used car salesman). However, he has grown on me. Remember his age as well. Maturity happens over time and blaming a 12? Year old kid for growing up in a criminal enterprise is shady.

Irish ambassador

Friendship doesn’t have to be transactional. Him being supportive can easily be enough.

Mohit

I think a stoat would be a great bonded partner for Flynn. It is mischievous yet intelligent and it's not obviously powerful to a casual observer. It also further connects Flynn to Rain. I'm wondering if this is setting up something for the 2 of them down the line. I look forward to it!

Mohit

BTW, I thought the recorded messages were a very sweet idea and helped showcase a familial bond between everybody in Kai's life. Now I wonder if Kea has news to share, or if it will be an even more emotional moment.

David

Wow, not sure why everyone is still so passionate about Flynn. I didn't think his role in this chapter was very significant, but that's all anyone seems to be talking about...

G

I think it was a tipping point. No matter what, Flynn almost always seems to have something special for him. The Kit was completely unnecessary, shows a bit of laziness from the author and favoritism in terms of giving him a special familiar bond as well. On top of Flynn somehow convincing Hobbes to look after the Kit after Hobbes is generally vehemently against other familiars getting special treatment. Not really a Flynn chapter but I think it’s just shows the author can’t help himself.

D

That was nice of Flynn to do Hopefully kea actually has something to say.

Mohit

You know, reading again, and I like the approach of introducing lore around a new character/concept as soon as it is introduced. It helps keep the information organized in your head and can help form an immediate sense of attachment or at least interest.

Justin

While it certainly does seem like the author favors Flynn. I don't think it's quite as bad as you say. To me, Flynn is written as a character who is intelligent and talented on their own. But is only staying relevant because of Kai's patronage/ training/ luck. You have to remember that after his master left, Kai basically rebuilt the man so he could keep up.

Mohit

Quick question, what is the calendar year for the current year on Elydes? They referenced things that might have happened centuries ago or they might have happened decades ago.

Dustin

Completely agree. I hate Flynn so much and with him getting a bond I don't believe he will ever be written out of the story. There goes my hope for him dying any time soon.

Samven

I'm surprised about the amount of Flynn hate. It's been established that Flynn is good at keeping his struggles hidden and feels immensely indebted to Kai for all the opportunities he has given him. That he strives to create an environment were Kai can focus on growing without worries has been one of his main character traits since Higharbor.

Boo

Just googled “stoat” and OMG the cuteness!!! How did I not know this adorable animal existed??? No wonder people are getting so jealous of Flynn!

Boo

Im not surprised by the Flynn hate. I bet Rain gets a lot too. I’ve noticed in comments on this book and many others on RR that readers get VERY upset whenever they perceive any other character as somehow upstaging the MC. LOL the comments can get particularly upset when another male character gets more female attention than the mc (believe it or not I’ve actually seen some readers threaten to quit series over this).
