March 5, 2026: This is now a preview of Chapter 284. If you're someone who reads all the comments sections, it would be fun to read this version and then enjoy the comments before moving on, but if not, go ahead to 284 and read there.

****

A note:

"Those Who Reach" is something I planned to make a single chapter, but it's a smidge longer than I expected so I haven't been able to complete the whole thing yet. This was the only spot I could imagine breaking it. It makes a short, fun chapter.

What might end up happening, though, is that a couple of days from now when the rest of it's done, this post will be retitled 284 (preview), and then I'll include this chapter as part of the long "real" 284.

I'll sort out numbering after it's actually finished.

From a reading standpoint, here is a revised, chapterish amount of words. More words are coming soon. I'm going to aim for (approximately) 48 hours from now with that.

I hope you enjoy your read!

Those Who Reach

Marleck tea stains ringed the glazed blue interior of the cup that Thenn-ar had been sipping from all day. Ro-den stood at a sterilizing basin in one of the low hazard research rooms of his facility on Thegund, looking into the cup and admiring those stains through the fog of post-coital mellowing.

Here in his hands was proof of his favorite lover’s existence and the hard work she’d devoted to his ideas and goals since they’d met. He had known her before this facility was built, but right now he felt he grasped the truth of her more clearly.

She was a few steps to his left, lying on the warm cushion of magic he’d made for them on the floor. The light from her tablet shone on her face. She was probably thinking about one or two of the experiments that were underway.

Those experiments were…there were some of them happening. There were always some happening. Ro didn’t actually care enough to bring the details to the surface of his mind when he was so relaxed. But it seemed particularly wonderful to him that Thenn was managing them here where he could watch her doing it.

She brought the tablet closer to her eyes. Perhaps she was chasing a brilliant idea of her own. He found himself eager to hear it.

“Have you caught a scent of genius, Thenn?”

She chortled. “Do I look like I have?”

“Yes,” he said. “I’m making tea for you.”

“I know, Ro. I’ll drink it.”

“I’ve decided to leave the stains in your cup. Because they are evidence of you.”

He intended to carry her deeper into understanding that revelation with his next words. But then the patch he’d adhered to his upper arm as soon as she’d suggested they take this sort of break together activated, injecting him with one of his own custom potion blends. It was a swifter, more aggressive reversal than the commonly available stuff, and sometimes it made him swing too far in the opposite direction and become irritable. He’d find time to tweak the blend again soon, but for now it was better than letting nature have its way.

He made Thenn’s tea without any further silly comments, and by the time he passed the cup to her and fell back onto the comfortable spell beside her, he was thinking like his usual self.

“You could have let yourself enjoy it,” said Thenn, frowning at her tea in lieu of him. “It’s only the two of us for a change, and I’m a considerate mate. I wouldn’t leave you to become easy prey for the beasts or bring someone who usually annoys you back to join us when you’re in that state.”

“I’d prefer to stay sharp enough to kill the beasts and the annoying people, if you don’t mind.”

She minded a little, he knew, but she wouldn’t press. This was a quarrel that never germinated.

He put his hands behind his head. The spell cradled him, but he’d mastered it too long ago to appreciate it anymore. Instead, he fixed one eye on a recording of a mishap in the main lab from a couple of days before and the other on her.

“The loss of version eighteen and the demonic sample from Gathos was a stupid mistake,” he said. “Veesa-get’s team spent a season preparing eighteen’s body for it, and I’m not sure how many times I had to talk to that dull wretch on Artona I who calls himself a scientist before I could drag that tiny sample out of his wrinkled hands. But I know I must have taken some kind of mental injury from the experience….then I pushed harder than I should have. Now we have to repair the vault again, and we hardly got any data from the Gathos piece.”

“All of that is true,” said Thenn.

“I believe my flaw may be that I always reach for more than I should. Faster than I should. The next thing and the next before the last is settled. Courage has its drawbacks.”

“Courage?” she asked.

“Of a type,” Ro answered. “My courage and confidence in my abilities gave us this lab. And they are also the roots of occasional…ambitious errors. This time they’ve ruined the vault and wasted everyone’s efforts. We race upwards only to fall half the way back down.”

Thenn set her tablet on the floor and looked at him as if she would say something, but the silence swelled around them instead.

“What will you do after we succeed with the artificial demon?” she finally asked.

“I was worried you were about to say something harsh! I’ll accept my Trimeritorious. No longer owe any of my credit to fools. Build a large addition or several to this facility. Move on to the next project.”

“What is the next project?”

“Something impressive and to the temporary betterment of lifeforms everywhere I’m sure.”

“Here on Thegund?”

“The lab is here. I haven’t had it for that long, and it’s a little difficult to move. Maybe I’ll let you decide what truths we should uncover next. We children of this neglected stonechild could pick away at her troubles for a long time, don’t you think?”

He let his old accent return for just a few words, hoping it would amuse her.

She leaned over and put her mouth close to the side of his neck. A hand rested against his cheek. He expected her lips to touch his throat, but instead her words cut his ears.

“If I were the Trimeritorious wizard Thenn-ar, my story would not end in this small place,” she said. “If my authority could carry me to wherever the broken heart of the universe lies, I would go there and study it until I understood how to fix it.”

Ro pulled back from her. “I know a wizard must bear the expectations of those who tie their lives to his, but I had been feeling like the others were applying unreasonable pressure lately…until now. I should apologize to them. They’re very reasonable after all.”

“You asked me to help you find talented people who were too ambitious to fit in on Thegund and too Thegundese to have left for a better place. Those who would believe in wizardry instead of wordchains, but not follow most wizards. Who could and would learn anything you taught, whether it is legal for you to teach it or not. Here we are. And you are our only wizard.” She rose to her feet and looked down at him. Her smile was soft, but her eyes were thoughtful. “You are a great wizard. In many ways. Almost enough.”

“Almost?”

“Worli Ro-den, you do shine. That such a bright star was born in this place and survived this place is a wonder and an excuse for pride. You have achieved much and will achieve more. You lead your people where others would never take us. We do not mind that you are sometimes reckless on the way there.”

“This has turned quite complimentary. Keep going.”

“You can be kind to those you care about,” said Thenn. “I will keep this lab running for as long as it’s yours, and I won’t regret following you wherever we go. But I don’t think you are ‘reaching for more’ in the way you imagine…and I’m afraid you can’t blame courage for anything. You have almost none of it.”

She dropped the empty cup. He might not have caught it if not for the help of one of his rings.

“I sometimes think I love you, Ro. Keep this and know that. Someone told me the tea stains are evidence of me.”

Thenn-ar’s cup hadn’t broken when the box holding it flew across campus after the cart mishap. Ro had stored it well enough to protect it from anything short of another wizard’s deliberate attack. But it had been one of the last things he found that afternoon, hiding under a bush, and a few days later, as he sat in Hot Lab 7 drafting educationally scathing critiques for his students with one half of his thoughts, an eye stayed fixed on the spot where the cup now sat on his office shelf. He kept looking for damage that wasn’t there.

It was good that Jeneth-art’h’s son had skipped Ro’s classes so far this week. That flash of fear he’d felt when he’d finally found the box and looked within to check on the cup had bloomed into the kind of anger that couldn’t safely be directed at anyone. Even if he had dared to unleash it, a socially incompetent child who went around squeaking about duty, shame, and evil wouldn’t be much of an opponent. And being the son of a man who Ro-den felt a deep, old twinge of indebtedness toward made him an even more inappropriate target.

That man being the Primary would also complicate things.

Why couldn’t the little oddity have gone to DawnStep like every other knightling?

A flicker of red light from his monocle earned a fragment of his attention. It was his periodic reminder of another oddity. The flickers came precisely once every Earth hour, a sure sign that Alden Thorn had scheduled his calls through the Contract.

Ro had spent much too long considering every possible reason the human Ryeh-b’t might want to have a conversation with him and had concluded that there wasn’t a single one that should prompt him to respond.

He should have called a hundred times the first day. As if he were in a panic. The curiosity would have forced me to answer if nothing else. Scheduling them indicates he has a certain lingering feeling of entitlement to my time even after what I said to him. I won’t encourage it.

But he allowed the notification to continue flashing when he was awake. If Ro-den had endured long years of guilty twinges about the young knight who’d now become the Primary, then he might as well feel a few for the Avowed he’d taken advantage of.

They were nothing compared to his regret about everything else anyway.

I reached for too much.

Another call came. It was from the very student he couldn’t squash. Ro tried to take pleasure in ignoring Stu-art’h, but it really wasn’t enough.

The boy called again, almost immediately after the first was rejected, and both of Ro’s eyes drifted to the cup.

Ro set his monocle to show no evidence at all of Stu-art’h’s existence for the rest of the night.

There’s a certain similarity to my two pesterers, as ridiculous as that is. One was an art’h, the beloved son of one of the Triplanets’ most powerful weapons. The other was an orphaned human. But they both had an egregious ignorance about how life worked. Alden’s must be somewhat willful. I suspect Stu-art’h’s is more than a little genetic—

The next call that came was thankfully from a drone waiting with a delivery outside. Ro let it in and left his chair to collect it.

“A formal envelope? From…” He stared at it. And then at the small black hover drone, as if the thing might have an explanation.

“I only just rejected his last call. He didn’t have time to send a letter.”

But somehow, he had. Ro remembered those unwavering eyes. And that peculiar declaration that his evil would be fixed.

He opened the envelope. “It’s calligraphed by hand.”

Master Worli Ro-den,

I invite you to a place of warmth and provender, where you may exchange truths with me under the shade of my protection.

“Ha! He’s serious.” Ro had to set aside his amusement to read down the next line.

Outside Vethedya there is a House of Healing that has brought succor to me. The greeting house for travelers to that place is where many, including myself, have chosen to speak honesties and cleanse the past before walking the road of healing. You have permission and privacy to speak there.

I would like to hear your words. And I will make a request of you. It is my belief that agreeing to the request is not beyond your means and is to the benefit of your honor. But knowing of your disposition—

“I think he’s about to insult me.”

But knowing of your disposition, I have prepared generous payment as well.

I await you at my table, which is laid with bowls of welcome. Come in truth, and I will answer in truth.

Sina Stu-art’h

“Who writes like this? Does he think I’m just going to go and confess to whatever evil he imagines I’ve done?” Ro was considering blowing his nose on the pretentious invitation and sending it back by poet courier.

Go. Don’t go. He heaved a sigh. I have to go so that he doesn’t show up on campus in the middle of the night and start shouting that I’ve done something terrible. I haven’t, but the accusation might sound believable.

An eye landed on the cup. His anger bubbled up.

It sounds like he wants…to make a deal. Something ‘generous’ in exchange for the confession? Ro could see his own reflection if he focused on a few different shiny surfaces in the office. His skin was covered in tattoos. Almost all of them could be considered deals he had gotten the better half of.

He smiled.

“I won’t hurt him, Jeneth-art’h,” he said to the drone and the empty office. “I’m just going to teach him a lesson about how life works. It’s what an instructor should do.”

Cliffhanger into Flashback el Clasico

Aoinfinity

You know, I wasn’t expecting a sudden Ro-den interlude, but it really does end up working. And getting to see younger, less arrogant Ro-den is somehow a treat.

Zero

hmmm, i dont think this is going to go the way Ro-den thinks it will, Stu ultimately doesn't care about him, Stu only cares about the fact that Ro-den is negatively impacting the people around him and that Alden has a grievance against him at this moment. Either way here's to hoping that things work out. Thanks for the chapter.

puppy0cam

You are a troll (I say with a shit eating grin on my face)

Jesse Sanders

This is an... interesting side to Ro-den. A man who has deluded himself to believing he is devoted enough to his work that he will not allow himself to enjoy the peaceful moments, yet who needs potions that forcibly take him out of that peace in order to maintain that demeanor. Only to then be called out as a coward by one of the only people he is close to loving. Amazing "chapter" as always.

Msharlo1

I feel like we're about to find out that Ro is Kibby's bio dad. Also the origin story of Alden's first wizard ring! "if not for the help of one of his rings"

Hallow

Thank you for the partial chapter, it was great, I look forward to seeing what happens next

Ine

ah, delicious hubris

TerryBytes

So torturous! The way you drip feed and tease even during big and exciting moments is such a great and important part of your style, excited for the second part

Kate Yen

Ro is so good. I love that "redemption arc" doesn't feel sufficient to cover the nuance of his motivations and flaws re: his relationship with the ordinary class, particularly on Thegund, and his role in mistreating Alden. And like. This guy knows supervillains, too! Imagine all the hijinks him, Alden, and Stu could get up to. Heheheheh

Kate Yen

Also, I find it very funny that almost all of our information about Artonan sexual behavior is inferred from things Ro has done.

GryphonKnight

And this is why Super Supportive is glacially slow Sleyca keeps diving deeper and deeper into this world like Alden being six levels deep into an exploration of Masterfully Crafted Spells Incredible chapter No notes 🎬

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Looking forward for more of Ro-den's POV. It's all we have left of Thenn-ar after all, apart from her cup.

Chas Becht

Someone's reach exceeds his grasp.

Terrestrial_Biped

Well, there’s also Stu’s little adventure during welcome week, and the way he seems to blame it at least partially on sex…

Harimeow

What a beautiful chapter. Imagine producing a fine work of art every week. Writing that's pushing the boundaries of genre fiction into the literary with the care of its crafting. For a brief, blazing moment I was so mad when I realised this was a flashback, now I know I couldn't have done without this chapter now. Damn you, Sleyca, bending my mind with your authorly authority!

CB

A slightly smaller cliffhanger after the last cliffhanger. Tension is building up. I do like it if an antagonist prepares to teach the heroes a lesson, only to be humbled.

Sesharan

It’s kind of fascinating to me that even now, with time to think on it and in the privacy of his own thoughts, Joe can’t think of anything he’s done that he would consider “terrible”. I feel like that fact alone gives us an absolute wealth of insight into his character.

Quivo

Famous last words from a man who knows he always reaches too much, preparing to do it yet again 👀

Gregory

As Thenn-ar pointed out, it doesn’t really. Joe’s ambitions are grand in one sense, but he’s very comfortable. Like, he aspired to get an award that he doesn’t actually care about and then… do more of the same.

Andrew Simpson

...Does Ro have a device set up to automatically inject an anti-after glow potion? That's kinda fucked. Maybe artonan afterglow is way more mind warping or intoxicating, but still kinda fucked.

Markus

I agree, nothing said here convinced me otherwise. We just know that he is, probably, good for his people. If we assume that Forbidden knowledge is forbidden because of society separate who can learn stuff because of bad reasons and not because the knowledge is a memetic hazard.

kid

Nooooo… where is the mighty thunderous stick !!!!

CB

Maybe they took some potions before having sex?

Cliff

Wasn't expecting that point of view. Lovely reminder that everyone is the hero in their own story. Tftc. Now I'm looking forward to the confrontation even more!!!

Gregory

Imagine you have a spam call from a telemarketer on line one and your prince on line 2. Now imagine showing up to a tea party afterwards and both of them show up.

BelligerentGnu

*James t Kirk wrath of khan voice* SLEEYYYYCAAAAAAAA!

FirewolfQuasar

Thegund being full of traditionalists that still do their wordchain chores and are suspicious of wizardry wasn't something I had realised. I suppose Kibby isn't particularly representative. I suppose we saw some hint of it in Ro-den calling the wizards bad in listening to the elder croak and wizards being rare in the kids allowing Kibby to win.

Firija

Alden, pick me up and let me timetravel approx. 48 hours!

zero

Thank you for the chapter

Rohan Martin

I feel that Ro’dens interpretation of the calls as entitlement to his time as opposed to determination really shows his lack of understanding of humans

erfan ashkan

I have to say im disapointed in this chapter. Maybe it will read better as i bing the series but as a chapter a week after the last one it feels like unnecessery edging. Most of the info we get in this chapter we already had.

PatienceHoney

I read the chapter title as, *For* Those Who Reach... 🙃 Which, I think, works, maybe better than the real title. 🤔 Because I was a little disappointed when I noticed my mistake. 🧐

Nyxodia Dawn

This is torture… 48 more hours… (T ^ T)

FirewolfQuasar

Nah, it just shows his arrogance. He was able to be really friendly to Alden when they first met. He exuded so much wizardly panache that he became so popular on earth that the new-old ambassador felt threatened and banished him. He is one of the Artonians that understand humans best.

Kemlion

Stu would totally show up in the dead of night screaming of Joe’s evil ways

Rohan Martin

“He might not have caught it if not for the help of one of his rings.” Cracks in Ro’dens ability?

Rohan Martin

Thenn is HARSH. Love it. Definitely going to have to reread her parts.

David Bailey

... a story is not an infodump, though. This gives the perspective of the third person in what is looking to be a VERY dramatic moment.

Guus van der Borg

Well, Stu's suspicion that Joe had tricks to influence his mental state is confirmed. :)

FirewolfQuasar

I find Ro-den respectfull disrespect funny and interesting. Unlike many wizards that take the Artonians cast system for granted Ro-den seems to view both avowed and ordinary class Artonians as deserving as people with their own wants and agency who deserve just as much respect as any wizard. It is just that he is perfectly willing to use other wizards to his own advantage so you are still at risk being screwed over.

Keifru

Honestly, I can't say I enjoy the transition of the previous chapter, into this. I feel like this might go better as a Ro-den POV mixed into the previous chapter, probably after we see Stu finish his thing and set out. We see Ro-den reacting to Alden/Stu, and then we bring it back with the Alden at the end of the chapter being surprised by Stu and Ro-den. The ending of the last chapter is too much of a dramatic moment to *not* immediately go into.

Christoffer Gustafsson

Oh, poor poor Ro'den. Your misconceptions of the situation will surely bite you very hard in the ass. Way harder then what you would like. Who knows, maybe even to death. The consequences of being hit with the staff that Stu is holding is uncertain.

JJ Hunter

Vindication! I love you, Thenn-ar, and I wish we'd gotten to know you better and longer.

Jim

I’m going to take an unpopular stance. Sleyca, don’t deliver an update in 48 hours, stay on schedule and deliver it next week. Reclaim some of your precious time for the next chapter. Nothing says you have to deliver to us a complete chapter, and this is a decent stopping point. Other than that, love what you have so far and looking forward to the rest. It’s interesting that Artonans have post coital vulnerability, or at least the males do. I wonder if that is an evolutionary advantage for the species.

Itsowkur

The fact that Stu is using a stick to beat Joe reminds me of that saying “the dildo of consequences rarely arrives lubed”

Armo

I have a feeling Ro is going to regret that bit of hubris in underestimating Stu. He may already be regretting it, as we see with his panicked expression in the previous chapter.

puppy0cam

> The next call that came was thankfully from a drone waiting with a delivery outside. Ro let it in and left his chair to collect it. > “A formal envelope? From…” He stared at it. And then at the small black hover drone, as if the thing might have an explanation. > “I only just rejected his last call. He didn’t have time to send a letter.” > But somehow, he had. Ro remembered those unwavering eyes. And that peculiar declaration that his evil would be fixed. Chapter 121 (Avalanche): > The members’ faith in their leader, their gratitude toward her, and their affection for her would have been strong enough to withstand a simple word of warning. But a multipage essay of warning being delivered to each of them, in duplicate no less, was something else. A spoken word could be pushed out of the mind so quickly. Having so many words that so thoroughly speculated on a portion of their lives shoved in front of their eyes once and then again shortly afterward in hardcopy… Alden and Stu really are cut from the same cloth.

JJ Hunter

It somehow seems characteristic of Ro-den that he abuses potions to cut himself (and his partners) off from when he's actually being lovely and affectionate and pleasant to be around. Buddy. *Buddy.* The biology is there for a reason, you're interfering with important neural pathway reinforcement there. No wonder you're acting like everything is transactional when you're literally training your brain to expect social bonding time and the state of being connected to other people will always have an unpleasant drop off. *You're doing antisocial reinforcement.*

FirewolfQuasar

"We children of this neglected stonechild could pick away at her troubles for a long time, don’t you think?” He let his old accent return for just a few words, hoping it would amuse her." Wait is stonechild a Thegundeese word for moon rather than a standard Artonians one. Does that mean earth Contract wasn't just trolling Alden when it translated it literally but was actually being faithfully in it's translation since most Artonians would have found it a weird word to use too.

zombie

Roden is so eek eek eek for destroying his own orgasm after-glow. What type of person does that?? I'd get that during wizard parties, but not even with a trusted close (almost romantic) partner? Tenn called him a coward and she was 100% right. I also love her pointing out that the truly reckless world-shattering decision would be to investigate the heart of chaos, and that Roden is pussy footing around by not doing it. It's one more reason why Roden should become a votary and discard his cowardly ways and do something for the universe. Second point: Jeneth is going to be so proud and laugh his ass off that Stuart obliterated Roden in a political wizard fight. Roden was so self-satisfied and arrogant that he'd crush Stuart under his heel... little did he know. Third: Alden and Stuart calling Roden almost at the same time, and Roden not thinking even for a single moment that they might be calling for related reasons. Genius who? Fourth: The assistants stayed on Thegund because it's their home and the source of their political power through Roden. By giving the lab to Yilpack, they lose the ability to influence the future of Thegund - which must have mattered more to them than merely loyalty to Roden. Also, it was highly likely that Yilpack would have extracted all the value they could from the lab, and never returned to Thegund ever again. All the benefits that Thegund could ever reap, gone and placed in the hands of rich and affluent wizards. No wonder the assistants were incensed enough to risk their lives.

Eva

So we... Are still on the same cliffhanger but with more information? Sleyca is so clever!

Msharlo1

You're right but also missing the point. The assistants would have been placed in the hands of a powerful wizard because of their value and chaos knowledge, never to return to Thegund, their home.

JJ Hunter

Yes, yes she is! But now I have so much more Thegund lore to play with in the meantime. (No wonder Stu thought Alden might have encountered the prostration after the feast subcult on Thegund! They really are that emphatically pro-wordchain over wizardry. No wonder their Contract had issues.) And new Thenn lore! Magnificent Thenn! I have feasted well.

David Bailey

Ro-den treats all classes equally: as people to be used and rewarded relative to how well they serve his interests.

Ian T Hathaway

Ooohhhh! So much Joe! Sleyca you are so generous and kind, I love you and my boy

JJ Hunter

Ro-den among people who actually challenged him and had even bolder visions and ambitions than he did at his now-lost lab: yes, this is everything I wanted, and makes the forcible lab breakup even more painful. I miss Thenn. We barely got to know her, and every drop of new Thenn lore has the pain of her already being gone. I hope we learn more of what she said that Alden couldn't understand at the time someday.

Tashi Albertson

Worli Ro-den is such a fascinating character, especially now that it feels like a potential turning point for him. He now has an opportunity to be truly courageous, as Thenn-ar said she would be, in his place. Or, he can double down on the arrogance & fear, and truly lose it all. But it is fascinating, to realize at the center of a man with so much panache & power is fear. Ro-den came from nothing, treasured that nothing, and is deeply afraid of losing everything. Not the titles, but the stuff that matters to him, like Thenn-ar’s cup. Like Thenn-ar, herself. He’s even afraid of facing his own emotions and actions. Like Alden. Alden makes him feel a complex range of emotions, as the last person to stand with his beloved Thenn-ar before she died. As a child he sent to chaos, even if unintentionally. As someone who stood on his stonechild as everything died to that chaos. And Ro-den runs from emotions, more than he probably runs from anything else. I hope this opportunity to face them finally makes him stronger. But only he can choose that. Great writing, Sleyca! Beautiful characterization!

Cliff

I'm re-reading from the beginning to examine all of the gorgon and ro-den tidbits. Does anyone know if Sleyca ever let slip how much of the story was plotted before beginning to write? The worldbuilding is just so lovingly crafted... so many tidbits stand out to me this time around

Sickul

Thenn is really cool here. I'm surprised there is enough people on Thegund to fit the qualifications of Joe's assistant, I got the sense before it was a smallish population, but now I don't know why I thought that.

Poiuy

“Why don’t they just call Joe and have a conversation with him. Surely he’d have a reasonable response…”

Terrestrial_Biped

lol YES. That one drove me up a wall. “Oh they just have to resolve their little misunderstanding! And then Joe will be their powerful ally.”

Terrestrial_Biped

It’s definitely small. There’s only one proper city on the rock nowadays. But even a “small” planet is still a planet. I reckon it’s like Nebraska. It’s a small state, population wise. There’s half a continent between me and there. And yet I personally know three Nebraskans who moved out to the west coast and are in uncommon technical fields.

retrorocket0

My guess is it was something along the lines of "the tea stains are evidence of me" basically i am dead but you carry me with you.

Calibri

Sooooo excited for Stu to beat his ass. Can’t wait to see the dawning realization in Joe’s eyes.

HanJee

Ro-den is gearing up to deal with a rebellious student while "mom" Stu is gearing up for war oO

its_raven!

oh worlin ro-den they could never make me form an opinion about you

Jeremy Goldberg

If Roden knew the Primary when he was a young knight, is his guilt somehow related to his child-soldier upbringing? Does Alis-arth have a personal reason to dislike Roden, beyond his reputation? edit: I have a hunch that Stu and Roden have vastly different ideas of what constitutes “generous payment.”

puppy0cam

> Those who would believe in wizardry instead of wordchains, but not follow most wizards. that's strange. Why would these two forms of magic be at odds with each other?

JennP

This was nice. I was feeling the events in the last chapter seemed too abrupt, but this balances it out

Matt

I like how Ro-den isn't simply mustache twirling evil, he's complex. Arrogant, but brilliant. Courageous, but reckless. Uncaring, but in grief. He views himself as good, probably because he can 'see the big picture'. But also has regrets. It will be interesting if he doubles down on his mistakes once they're pointed out or if he tries to rectify them.

Saaski

My guess is that wordchains are just more accessible. If everyone can do word chains to get the results you would otherwise need a wizard for, then why venerate wizards in the extreme. I did find the implications interesting though

Nathan

But that's the thing, he's not courageous. He's very greedy but in the end he's a coward who can't own his mistakes.

Saaski

Re your first point, that’s interesting to think about. As for the payment thing, that’s hilarious. Not least because it might work in both directions. In that I would believe it both equally if Stu “the Primary’s Son” instantly went with something very valuable that left Ro thinking “I can’t afford to accept this” As well as, if Stu went “he’s worth this much, and if he argues, then I can always ask a tree for a favour after all”

OldFishBoi

Thanks for the preview.

Guus van der Borg

This chapter made me think. I wonder if part of whatever deal Alden, Joe, and Stu will hash out here will involve Alden visiting the conveniently close mind healer to see if she can recover the last message Thenn-ar wanted to give to Joe from Alden's memory. It kinda feels like it's building up to there. This feels to me like a bizarre place for this meeting anyway, maybe it’s a plot convenience?

Troy

Such a short chapter 😭

Idea for a prank in a far, distant future: BANANA SUMMONING RITUAL When it is revealed, that Alden is a wizard, and he starts learning magic from masters almost as great as distinguished ambassador Kivb'ee, he will prank Emban art'h by teaching her a spell he created, the Banana summoning ritual. But instead of banana, what appears in the summoning circle will be Stu in a banana costume. Holding a banana basket for Emban. (And yes, the pranked one is about to get peeled)

zombie

Alternate point of view: Artonan punishment system is big on self-improvement and repentance. I think Stuart could be genuinely interested in giving Ro-den the opportunity to reflect on his mistakes and deal with his guilt - and do better from now on. There is a chance Yenu, unconventional as she is, might even convince him to go through with it.

Soupport

You might be tempted to bum-rush the telemarketer too. Although, if I have a telemarketer and a supposed prince in the same room in real life, I see a massive scam coming. Morbid fascination demands I hear them out, above any self-preservation instincts.

Ano Ano

lmao Joe is so fucked. A cynic doesn't stand a chance against our two good earnest boys

M

I love how irrational Ro-den's anger towards Stu is. Stu didn't have anything to do with Thenn's death (Ro-den did, even if just by underestimating the danger she was in), Stu wasn't the one who levitated the cup and sent it flying across campus at dangerous speeds for fun (oh look, that was Ro-den too). And Ro-den even knows that his anger is irrational and misplaced, but he can't help but give into it anyways

Elle

Alden's artonan had quite the accent when he was back on earth

Jack Slash

My feelings towards Joe have been complicated in a good way. Awful guy, fantastic character, his lingering presence has been a welcome surprise this whole time. This chapter was a banger. Thank you for the chapter!

I’m dying to know how is roden indebted to jenneth! Sleyca is such a tease. Was roden saved by him ? Or just a favor ?

First, as a Live A Live fan, "Those Who Reach" immediately made me think of "Wings That Don't Reach," also translated as "On Broken Wings," which played in my head this whole last chapter. Made the whole thing way more melancholy. Second... I always imagined Thenn-ar's last words to Ro being something tender, but after this first bit, I feel like it was something more like, "Remember my words that day." "You have almost none" is just an absolutely brutal retort to someone who just called themselves courageous, and I do think that in some regards Thenn considered herself his keeper, and at that point those days were over. And the painful thing is, I think he realized what she meant to say anyway.

Alice YU

Thanks for summarizing what I’ve been feeling for me cuz I couldn’t 😂.

Neil

I think I would have honestly preferred if this wasn’t released. Don’t get me wrong, this is great content and I’m happy to read in context, but stepping back from the cliff yet again is rough. If this had been released early, or with a heavy warning at the top that it won’t resolve the cliffhanger at all, that would have helped, but I wish I hadn’t read this.

kapo

unrelated to the chapter, but I often see people calling Sleyca, “she” but do not see a specified gender somewhere. Is this just because the name sounds feminine from a ‘murican perspective or am I missing something?

PhoenixPax

I see SOMEBODY has forgotten he belongs to the 'avowed are existential threats' faction and has fallen into the error of the 'avowed are children to be instructed' camp.

QY

I get that the bribe theory is looking more and more plausible. But even with a “generous payment” involved, I still can't picture Stuart actually bribing Joe? Compromising with a someone he considers evil just doesn't fel very Stu—especially not by taking from his family’s collection (assuming it’s not even his to give, and he didn’t get permission). Negotiating with someone that seasoned would already place him at an informational and strategic disadvantage that can't be compensated by family prestige (Stu himself acknowledges how experienced and rule-breaking Ro-den is). Aaaaaand Stuart isn’t exactly socially skilled. So… it explains why he chose violence? I get the feeling that the “generous payment” is very much real (not bait) but maybe doesn't feel like a payment for Ro-den at all.

QY

Strange thought but could it be that the bowls of welcome aren’t just gestures, but actually part of the ritual framework of what Stuart is attempting—inviting/marking the “guest” into his home territory to strengthen the magical effect?

Tftc! Fantastic soup! Regarding update schedules and backlogs etc, I want to paraphrase something one of my other favorite Royal Road authors wrote recently, Warby Picus (also to anyone reading this Sky Pride is fantastic and in many ways on par with Super Supportive, check it out if you haven't! I don't like cultivation stories generally but it's still one of the best things I have ever read) Warby wrote out some advice to aspiring authors that was basically "always be so far ahead of what you have publicly released that you can feel comfortable just throwing it away if it ends up not working". He said it was a huge confidence booster to know that if a chapter ends up not working out exactly how you wanted it to that you have enough extra time to just toss it and see where the characters would *actually* take the story. If you need extra time to get to this point I fully support it and my subscription to the Patreon will remain unchanged as long as I have enough money to cover it. I really hope you've been working towards something like that Sleyca. Don't feel the need to show us every chapter you think is already finished or good enough! If you're a month or three ahead of where we are it gives you all the time in the world to change something that you feel isn't working. Will I have soup withdrawals in the meantime if you do this? Absolutely. But I'd honestly prefer it over such a fantastic and long running story falling flat in the final stretches, or disappearing forever if you burn yourself out on it. To anyone reading this who disagrees with me - You have no idea how many webcomics I followed over the years that just *ended* midway through because the author moved on to something else. Also, even more recent stuff like JJK that started out as fantastic and then just took a nosedive in quality at the end of the series because the author was getting bored of it. Quality is worth the wait, especially when one of the alternatives is waiting forever because there will *never* be a proper end if an author burns themself out and just moves on with their life. Please keep that in mind any time you complain about a chapter not coming as fast as you would like it to..... <3 for what we have gotten, and here's hoping the Soup takes all the time it needs to cook and leaves us all feeling full, fat, and happy.

retrorocket0

I just realized roden may not realize how restrictive the contract is. We don't know how contracts work but the secrecy only restricted alden. He might have aligned it to aldens understanding of the contract. He might have been able to feel what his side of the contract entailed but only gotten a "visual" of what aldens side. I was trying to think through and it didn't make sense for it to be as restrictive as it is cause it's restrictiveness makes it obvious which defeats the purpose of it.

J Reynolds

I think that the contract was just as restrictive as Joe envisaged. Remember: he wanted Alden working for him as an occasional contractor in a couple of years. So long as Joe could present his missions as being heroic (or at least good), then Alden would be a perfect fit.

Elle

“I’m just going to teach him a lesson about how life works. It’s what an instructor should do.”

zombie

Roden wants to do chaos research. Even if Roden is undeserving accolades, if he continued this work everyone would benefit from it. Even Stuart would certainly see that as beneficial for the universe. As for whacking the barrier with a stick - Roden shouldn't have tried separating Alden from Stuart, a gesture Stuart might have interpreted as threatening. So yeah, Stuart acted quite reasonable.

Jsar

Lordy, what a pointless pull away from the climax you've finally got around to writing. How utterly disappointing. Even with the whole chapter this would all just be stuff to scroll past to get back to the damn story.

Kim Enteiu

I just had a heartbreaking thought; Mother could give Alden back Thenn-ar’s last words to Joe. Even more heartbreaking, if Alden figured that out he wouldn’t even use it as a bargaining chip, he’s just give them to Joe, even if he had a request.

DrDark

After reading the chapter and some of the discourse here, I came to the idea that part of why Ro-den is trying to enforce a sharp break might also be entirely personal. I don’t think it’s a large reason, or at the forefront, but Ro-den is probably deeply furious and ashamed that Alden saved most of the assistants but not the one he cared for the most. This earnest teen who also suffered as a result of his choices didn’t save the most precious “burden” for him. Imagine how fast He would’ve made Thenn come in the lineup had he shown a modicum of care. Acknowledged what she meant to him.

DrDark

Ro-den was furious about Stu being even loosely associated with nearly losing the mug. But Ro-den can’t really direct any anger at Alden for a lot of reasons. Both socially and logically getting angry at the kid who did everything you asked is too delusional. Then he refuses to direct anger at himself in a meaningful way. So he finds the next closest available targets he can vaguely justify being shitty to. Get this mans some therapy because he needs a lot of help unpacking stuff

QY

An interesting contrast: this chapter further shows how Ro-den grew up in an underpriviledged background, became a selfish coward who has no real destiny or goals. Stuart is solving him through literal family power to help his friend, and remains perhaps the most courageous and determined character. The power imbalance is almost comical: a once nearly Trimeritorious genius crushed by legacy (wielded by a socially awkward first year university student). We obviously supports Stu in his choice of violence, and his family forged such power through generations of literal sacrifice and bravery. But it makes me wonder how often Ro-den had to face and endurera crueler kind of legacy growing up? It explains why he treats the ordinary class much better and maybe adds a vigilante feel of him sleeping with the Senator's wife (which sparked rumors about an unfair marriage contract)

Varun Krishnaswamy

Evil is a very strong word. For over 200 chapters we have only been seeing Alden/Stuart’s perspective of the situation, and even then he isn’t close to evil, just prideful and greedy, as he himself admits in this chapter. It isn’t always so black and white.

Semtic

The cliffhanger has become cliffhangerer!

JKlarinet

Warby also recommends revision. In context, he noted that regular revision has made his work much better. I think here Sleyca has a different writing model, where Patreon gives us earlier drafts, and the final version is the version published on Royal Road. Warby prefers not to show pre-revision work. I think Sleyca’s approach is also valuable. I like to see the changes and how this work goes through edits and iterations.

Deadly Grape

I'm pretty disappointed in this chapter. I really didn't want a chapter from another characters point of view here. The chapter is good. I'm just disappointed.

KB

Such a delightful chapter! I really loved some of the descriptions here. “This was a quarrel that never germinated.” - I love this phrasing. I also love how Joe’s fear for the mug “bloomed” into anger because it is so easy for fear to turn to rage, and “bloom” is the perfect word for that phenomenon. Also, Joe uses a lot of plant imagery. I thought the pacing was great - Joe is calm and his thoughts are meandering, but boy are things about to come at him fast! I particularly liked him breaking up Stu’s invitation with conversations with the drone. And now I am SO SO ready to see the “socially incompetent child” beat Ro with his weird stick!

MooMoo195

I think its fine, were getting the perspective you want soon enough anyways

TortCourt

It’s very different experience reading this story as it comes out instead of in one big chunk, which is what it will eventually be. Come back two years from now on a reread and appreciate the fullness of the world Sleyca has crafted for us. That’s what we’re all here for, after all.

QY

A true narcissist wouldn't admire or cherish someone as bluntly honest as Thenn as a close friend or lover. In Careening, Ro-den clearly wants to be seen and understood as his flawed, authentic self. And considering that Ro-den is literally dosing himself to “stay sharp enough,” I wonder if some part of him actually wants to be real (or even noble) but couldn't afford the vulnerability.

MooMoo195

Theres a saying, the path to evil is paved with good intentions. Evil isnt always intentional or malicious, sometimes its just apathetic or selfish. Someone disregarding the consequences of their actions for their own pride or selfish gain. Like drunk drivers killing passengers or other people. Most people dont start out their night with the intention of getting hammered and then murduring people, yet its one of the most common ways people die.

Snugglebadger

So I got two things from this chapter, possibly Ro-den's experiments on Thegund contributed to the downing of the contract there since he was creating artificial demons. Need more info on that. Second, he feels guilt towards the Primary, it may be that he was part of the group that experimented on the knight children of the Primary's generation. Which seems even more possible considering his experiments are tied to chaos. I don't think Ro-den is evil, I think he's in pursuit of knowledge and doesn't care how he gets it or who gets in his way. Which may be a kind of evil actually, since that's the same justification the nazi doctors used during ww2...we all thought Stuart was overreacting, maybe he's the only one seeing Ro-den for what he really is.

Itsowkur

Second guess is that roden got saved in some chaos incident in thegund by jenneth

G&S Gaming

I dunno, the impression I got from that chapter was more than she was one of his favorite tools, and the cup was more a memento of when times were better for Joe personally. Like, he valued her intelligence and capability, but pretty quickly dismissed her emotions and doesn't seem to have made any serious attempts to take her words to heart until stuff literally came crashing down

The Ox

It seems at least possible that a spell might exist to recreate that scene and recover Thenn-ar's words, but why do you think Mother could do it, specifically? It isn't clear that Contracts are capable of all forms of magic, they seem to be focussed on surveillance and command/control type functions vs all forms of magic.

Jason Harpster

All I got from this, is that we will probably get her last words from her PoV from so long ago now. .......and he will still never get to know!

Tacit Candor

As I read, I was struck by how brave and patient Stuart has had to be in his journey from being born into a small world that was crafted to perfectly fit his desires, to his hard-fought understanding of what the world truly is today - and how this contrasts with Roden's impatient and self-absorbed rush to reshape his small part of the world that is, into the world that he desires it to be. Both have placed immense burdens on themselves over the years, and both have struggled with their own self-image, but their approaches to their relationships and environments have been almost opposite - with Roden trying to gain and exert control, while Stuart was forced to sit back and allow reality to be itself. Now, Stuart seems to be healing by finding the confidence to take key parts of his life and relationships in hand, while perhaps Roden is at a point where healing can only come once he finds the courage, or is otherwise forced, to start letting go.

rkdesc

Back when Alden was evacuating the assistants, there one who behaved oddly: he insisted on piggyback riding until they exited the summonarium, which had anti-chaos flooring. At the time, I speculated that might have been a demon, but nothing referenced it in over 200 chapters, so I let it go. Now, though, we finally have another clue. Joe was working on making an artificial demon -- and apparently it's Nobel Prize-equivalent worthy research.

Lee Johnson

The last quell before the prodigal storm, a prideful ignorance of what is to come, a pompous klerm that is about to jump into a righteous maw.......STU IS GONNA FUCK HIM UP! mmwhaaahahahha.

Flopmind

I like how this whole chapter is about Ro-den reflecting about reaching for too much, and then he immediately reacts to Stu's letter by thinking he can go in and get the better end of whatever deal Stu has planned and teach him a lesson. One day, perhaps, you will learn some humility, Ro.

Flopmind

Thank you for the Soup, Sleyca!

Msharlo1

We already knew that was what Joe was working on and that his beef with the senator was caused when he was denied trimeritorious by said senator.

QY

Yeah… he had no idea what Stuart wanted or what he was there for, and just walked in assuming it would be an easy win because his opponent was a “socially incompetent child.” Didn’t even consider that the conveniently timed letter might mean Stuart was planning something.

J Reynolds

Joe is so cruel to himself, isn't he? He's living in such a way that he perceives post-coital snuggling as an inefficiency to be reduced. He is interested in cutting-edge research, but his interest in it seems to be yoked to a pursuit of status for its own sake. And now, instead of playing the long game, he is pursuing strictly short-term goals: 1) He made a nuisance of himself on Anesidora, and was told to go back to LeafSong. 2) He's antagonizing his students, which will /also/ come back to bite him on the ass. Artonans can live a long time, and the students of today will eventually be in positions of power. And knowing human (Artonan) nature, some of them will be very happy to hinder Joe whenever they get the chance. Joe really needs to reset himself and his goals. Will he be able to do so? Only time will tell...

František Novák

He did not make himself a nuisance. The reasons to kick him were not stated, and they were not told to him either.

zdm

Reaching for too much again, I suspect. But it makes sense for a reckless man to ignore his own fatal flaw deliberately.

Young Youghurt

Ro-den is the most human like character in this series. In the sense that he hasn't fallen to the madness they call courage but apreciates comfort and knows not to be unkind to himself. We got a small peak from where he rose up and how worn he is by his fate now. It makes him complicated and interesting where StuArth is just upright, flat and for now empty. RoDen shows genuinely good traits like generosity, compasion, loyalty but he won't compromise on his own comfort for some random alien teenager (or probably anybody else) and risk jail or even a bigger fall from grace. This conflict between his base preservation and noble "streaks" make for compeling inner turmoil. My impresion is that while RoDen proclaims he considers Avowed as threat and is for limiting their knowledge about skills and stuff he realises deep down the whole practice is slavery adjacent and that in itself is part of the problem and making it a self fulfilling prophecy. He is just too much of a coward and comformist to actually genuinely take a stand. Why should he care when he can profit from the situation by offering some (for RoDen cheap) nuggets of truth (for information starved avowed priceless) and is protected from potential consequences by secrecy contracts that depend on his prodigious magical self? Why? (Also it would distract from his research pursuits that are much more fun and surely important, it could also be used by his detractors to limit funds or something) He functions like a large number of people in our world. Hmm I wonder if Kivbee turns out how he predicted? Too weak to be happy as a wizard.

Despite his moral failings I have always loved Joe as a character. I hope we get to see more of him in the aftermath of whatever this is.

So his lover left him because of his inability to let himself enjoy the softness of love. She went to fight the chaos. That created Stuart. The lab he build created Alden. Wizardry is like science Ig. And Chaincasting is like religion. Interesting.

To the tune of "Brave Sir Robin", from Monty Python: Boldly Master Ro-den strode forth from Thegund's spot He was not afraid to try, brave Master Ro-den He was not at all afraid to be tried in nasty ways Brave, brave, brave Master Ro-den He was not in the least bit scared to be loved into a mush Or to have his eyes opened up and his morals woken To have his feelings split and his allies drop off And his authority thwacked and battered, brave Master Ro-den His head bonked in and his heart cut out And his 'Distinguished' removed and his lab unplugged And his nostrils tweaked and his freedoms hedged in And his Auriad cut and his— [Master Ro-den] That's, that's enough music for now, lads

JJ Hunter

Brave Master Ro-den ran away. ("No!") Bravely ran away away. ("I didn't!") When feelings reared their ugly head, He bravely turned his tail and fled. ("no!") Yes, brave Master Ro-den turned about ("I didn't!") And gallantly he chickened out. ("I never did!") He beat a very brave retreat. ("all lies!") Bravest of the braaaave, Master Ro-den! ("I never!")

In case there was confusion about the names: Ro-den's lover Thenn-ar died on Thegund, after giving Alden all the instructions and help she could. Stu-art'hs mom, Iella (-art'h, presumably) died on a far away planet, long before then.

Faces The Wind

and here I was thinking that unlike Stu, who is full of depth and nuance, Ro seemed like a flat and monotone self serving jerk. I was happy that he was getting some more backstory to round-out his character. Its just a matter of who we personally identify with. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Faces The Wind

Stu, Ro and Alden all come at self-righteous arrogance from such extremely different angles. This collision of "I didn't do anything wrong!" vs "I will fix your evil deeds!" vs "I will waste my money and rage against the bars of my cage!" is a masterpiece.

Jeryd Greer

Ahh yes. The words in my head are “Get Fucked”. I even like Ro-den as a Character, but I will enjoy his suffering these upcoming words.

Ploddingpanda

I think Artonans use a lot of plant imagery in general. I thought it was beautiful. I've really like how Sleyca has been very careful in weaving language so different characters from different backgrounds say and think with different unique sayings.

Danny

This is totally off topic for the current chapter, but anyone think when we eventually get to Goldbush there's a chance we run into Hannah? In world, she's plausibly a character who would get attached to some knight's retinue as a valuable support avvowed and she has the type of personality to dive into danger if it's necessary. Narratively, depriving Alden of a mentor early was necessary for him to grow into the man he is now, but now that he's made the big choices, she could just play the role of an old friend instead of a mentor. Maybe that's all wishful thinking and Hannah's just dead, but it'd be pretty cool imo

Super Super Supportive Supporter

This is actually Ro’s life flashing before his eyes during the blow by blow scene we get next chapter, of Stu thrashing some tattooed old guy with his stick

Kate Yen

The executioner Stu and Alden talked to is going to be SO jealous

JJ Hunter

I would be so thrilled if Hannah was still out there somewhere, and finally got to come home. Her POV on Alden's growth since she last saw him would be wild.

JJ Hunter

Ro-den resisting the natural way of things when it comes to his own body seems oddly apt for a lab PI overseeing trying to Frankenstein an artificial demon out of a demon piece and a constructed body.

JJ Hunter

Silly comments are endearing, Ro; they help make up for the times you're grouching and making irritable comments instead.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

Love this chapter, and all the details woven in about Artonan culture, politics, and characters. I would send my appreciation by poet courier if I could!

JJ Hunter

Many little details worth lingering on in this chapter so far. Such as "The other was an orphaned human" - how does Ro know Alden is an orphan? It's not something Alden would volunteer to strangers; did Ro-den do Alden research on the human internet?

Shotcamelot

Is that the kind of thing contracts will volunteer to summoners? It would not surprise me.

Lee Johnson

Idea: when Alden and Stu swear their brotherly allegiance with a bond of ink, they should get their matching tattoos on their butt cheeks; in part inspired by Lutes own defiant tramp stamp and also when ever anyone naysays the duo they can reply with "kiss my ass-tatt." Wonder how the artonian system translation will handle that?

Heather White

I do love the way Sleyca resists having 2-D villains who are simply evil. I enjoy getting to despise Joe while also seeing he has some complexity to him.

Yuhyuh

Almost everyone is so wonderfully grey. The only one dimensional people we’ve seen would be Winston who is fairly cliche.

M

Maybe I'm an idiot but I only just noticed: Commendation: Exceptional Bravery in the Absence of Obligation — Awarded by Fourth General Loh Alis-art’h Given to Alden who had no obligation to the people on Thegund and risked his life helping them anyways. Vs "I’m afraid you can’t blame courage for anything. You have almost none of it." Said to Ro-den, who did have an obligation to his lab assistants stranded on Thegund, and was not willing to sacrifice enough to fulfill it

puppy0cam

Wizards do have a major drug problem. An individual wizard is fully capable of self-prescribing, self-producing, and self-administering their drugs. And there are tons of legitimate reasons to need all the ingredients and tools needed to make the overwhelming majority of those drugs. The only limiting factor to how badly you can fuck up your life on drugs is your financial capability to buy what you need to make them. Do they even see the drugs as a problem? Or do they consider being drugged up on your own concoction as just another expression of your personality?

zetorian

Yea. There is a lot of debate about Ro-Den as a person going on in the last few chapters, but I think the fact that he was willing risk his assistant's safety is the most telling thing. They were fundamentally more vulnerable to chaos. They were politically beholden to him to some degree. And he was trying crackpot plans relying on loopholes and unexpected alien teenagers till the very end. Thats unacceptable as a person in power.

PhoenixPax

Yes, this! I overall think Joe is a fun character. Which does nothing to prevent me from chanting, "Hit him! Hit him!" like a spectator at a cage match. Oh look, it's Stu-art'h with the wooden folding chair!

Yuhyuh

Esh-erdi’s thoughts on Ro-den chapter 153 “I do have more than enough knowledge of Ro-den’s errors to judge him, and I judge him to be selfish, reckless, and arrogant. Unforgivably so for a wizard of his age and alleged intelligence.” Ali’s-art’h’s comments on Ro-den chapter 57 “Someone who treats their own species well while behaving as if a member of another one is a disposable tool is not a good —————.” Even the Mother calls Ro-den “a very naughty wizard” chapter 60 And now even here we see the one person who was probably closest to Ro-den call him a coward. And he had the opportunity to save her and the others who died on Thegund but chose not to because it wasn’t optimal for him. If Alden didn’t come along would he have even tried? Would we have Kibby with us still? I think not.

We're almost down to approximately 24 hours instead of approximately 48 hours! I've been laughing about the Ro-den of a bit ago vs the Ro-den pursued by wolves all day. I don't want him dead -- just a little chewed on by the puppies!

Lucia A

Why does Stuart write like a Jane Austen character 😂

Firija

At the moment, Alden needs to be entrusted directly (verbal or with a gesture) with everything he wants to preserve. Is this a hard limit? Back at the Leafsong exams, could Ro-den have said something like „Pick up and throw away everything glowing red“ once, if Alden had the right mindset? (I feel like I am not explaining it well.)

DrDark

Random side thought, we still haven’t learned what Lutes second skill is. Think there are any chances it could be one of the original avowed skills? I’m not sure it’s likely, but a rare ish unknown skill for a cosmically important support class sounds like a plausible candidate

Tauwetter

»a place of warmth and provender« I had to look up the word „provender“, it’s defined as animal feed. Another interesting Artonan turn of phrase, a place where there is enough food even for the lifestock. Sleyca truely crafts every sentence with care and grows my vocabulary.

J Reynolds

Ro-den could probably have said it, but it would have only worked for the first thing Alden picked up and threw away. Carriage rules are once you put something down, you need to get told to pick it up again. We saw the same thing last chapter when Alden had to keep asking Lute about picking up the towel. Saying it once wasn't enough.

denatured

So Ro's ambition boils down to "I'm going to score points off you" and his courage boils down to "you can't tell me what to do." Other people in the comments are talking about how he's not a black and white villain. But from what I can see this is an absolutely thorough character assassination. He might not be a black and white villain, but he is a full-colour preteen.

puppy0cam

> But they both had an egregious ignorance about how life worked. Alden’s must be somewhat willful. I suspect Stu-art’h’s is more than a little genetic— genetic? why would Stu's strangeness by caused by genetic issues? Is it from being conceived in a chaos zone? Stu definitely has some neurological issues, but I assumed those were caused by trauma and the manner in which he was raised. Not because of his parentage.

PhoenixPax

>>> If Ro-den had endured long years of guilty twinges about the young knight who’d now become the Primary OMG, we have reference dating! Jeneth was a 'young knight' when Ro-den met him. It's hard to say exactly what Ro-den would consider young, but if they met on Thegund, it might well have been a really early knight assignment like Goldbush is. Possibly age mates! If Ro-den was a teenager, Jeneth might have even tried to convince him to become a knight! I always assumed Joe was way younger than the Primary, but maybe not.

PhoenixPax

>>> Ro had spent much too long considering every possible reason the human Ryeh-b’t might want to have a conversation with him and had concluded that there wasn’t a single one that should prompt him to respond. Ro-den, an intellectual: This human who I saw dressed to the nines traveling through a restricted teleport hub to the Triplanets wearing his secrecy tattoo hidden under the clothes embroidered with his commendation from the fourth most important person in the universe obviously has no conceivable valid future business with me.

QY

Yeah I can soooo feel Ro-den's "Who writes like this? "

Firija

Iirc we have. First one is Bestow Wordchain, which every S-Rank Chainer gets (discussed when the four boys assemble to move the big harp while moving in). Second one is something called Harmony or similar, I think. Used during Hannas funeral, choosing it is shown in one of Lute‘s chapters, when he affixes. He tries to choose one not important for his summoners to spite Aulia. Edit: and it is mentioned to be sth like in remembrance to brother *insertname*, which makes it unlikely to be a 300. I think the palace people are unlikely to design one for an Avowed who will explicitly not face chaos. Edit 2: I recalled incorrectly, all „facts“ to skill 2 are a mixup and false.

Itsowkur

I just remembered that there was this moment when Alden came back from thegund and mother was explaining why Alden would never get used to the affixation, and apparently “an interesting part of Alden” disagreed ? Was that ever explained ? Is it ever going to be ?

Colin Singleton

that interesting part was the gremlin. and it disagreed not on whether Alden would get used to his binding, but on the nature of authority. gremlin's views on authority have not yet been explored

I like to think this title is an alternative translation of Esh’s “grab-greedy like a kid” that fit Bash-nor.

I hope once we sort out all of the pressing issues on the Artona front we get a nice longish school arc. The combined pressures of Alden’s newfound drivenness and him (possibly) being out as a wizard in the Art’h household would be a fun combination. We haven’t had an ‘Alden thinks he’s doing a good job of appearing normal while being terrible at it’ type arc in a while.

J Reynolds

I'd like to see a bit of time devoted to a run of Team Konstantly Awesome. If they're able to get their team registered.

Jazehiah

We have had hints that the two have known each other for a long time, but it's never been quite so spelled-out.

Provender has an older, more generic meaning of food. Stu using it fits with an antiquated, overly formal style. In this context, nothing to do with animal feed. Agreed, however, that it’s a great use of specialized vocabulary to communicate a very specific mood.

JJ Hunter

Thinking about Ro's last conversation with Thenn earlier on the day she died. “'What do I do if the dad freaks out, and I can’t take the kids today?' 'He shouldn’t,' said Joe. 'I was in touch with Thenn this morning, and she says she’s had a thorough talk with him. They’re growing more concerned about some of the readings they’re getting on the detectors at the lab, so you look like a better option than you did a few nights ago, I imagine'" (40).

Any chance that a large, unadmitted part of Joe's behavior towards Alden is anger and blame that he survived instead of Thenn?

zombie

Maybe not anger, but Alden is a reminder of everything that went wrong. That alone is reason enough to avoid him and dislike that if he wanted, he could place a righteous guilttrip at Roden's feet.

It appears that there is an old way to do magic which is based on balance: wordchains and gorgons peoples way. The „newer“ wizards way of bending the universe to will without compensation may be responsible for the chaos/demon problem. Will be interesting to find out since Ro was able to create an artificial demon, he must be aware of something about it.

Looking forward to todays chapter. I wonder if they all see the healer and get the tattoo altered. Alden could try to get help in remembering Thenns last words for Ro.

Anthony Lutz

Unfortunately there was no approximate update to approximate on the RR chapter this week... time to start spamming refresh!

Anthony Lutz

Possible that the day 1 message orb was a new "private" line of communication, if Ro could always have spoken to Thenn for updates he would have told them he was coming on that first day.

Obbu

I do kind of feel that Alden spam calling Ro-den is a subtle reference to us spamming refresh, waiting for new chapters :)

I hope this means we can expect... fun happening next chapter. Thanks!
