I wasn't expecting much from this adaptation when it was first announced, but I think they're really nailing it! It gives me similar vibes to the Phoenix Wright live action movie (one of my favorites), where they lean into the goofy elements, don't take themselves too seriously, and clearly have a love for the story. And excuse me while I swoon for Zoro's choreography. They did our boy JUSTICE.

iDiv

Missed yesterday, but can make it today. Did you guys watch eps 1-4 or just 1-2?

Audrey Dappen
>>116550739

1-4 I had to leave part way through so I'm hoping she can get the last two up with enough time or me to watch it pre-stream

Dana

Honestly, I never got around to reading the manga or watching the anime. It was mostly because I wasn't too keen on the art style or the character designs. It might sound a bit contradictory, given that there are mangaka whose styles I adore even though they don't adhere to mainstream aesthetics, and I tend to criticize people who dismiss their work solely because of that. But, well, being human means having our fair share of contradictions, I suppose. Anyway, I'm happy that I can now enjoy the plot and storyline in a different format that resonates with me more.

Ezekiel

YAY so excited!! im absolutely loving OPLA and the straw hat crew!!! <3

Laurie Gadeau

Been a fan of One Piece since I was 7 years old. Althought they did take some liberty compare to the original story, (which is expected since you can't just fit everything in 8 episodes.) It's absolutely beautifuly done. Casting is amazing too. I'm a little bit disapointed with Shanks choice though. But otherwise, I absolutely love it !

Kelly Green

Got to say, I really wasn't expecting to see you do a reaction to One Piece. I have just finished watching the series with my mum, and I am looking forward to seeing what you think. I think I started reading One Piece back around 2017, though it feels longer.

Beny

This adaptation is such a joy! I loved watching this series with you. Netflix released a video recently about how they build the world, it´s not very long, but I thought you might enjoy it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fUrbJ6-kEw

Ninni

Honestly, out of all the anime that I was thinking could work as a live action, One Piece wasn't even on my bingo card. This was fun!

neonseas

If, for some reason, you wanted more context for the Zoro and Kuina stuff, the flashback is episode 19 of the anime. They left out quite a few important details IMHO from the live-action version... but that is really my only complaint about anything in the series. It's so clear that everyone put so much love into this.

Dana
>>116683831

Exactly. Now I have a million others I want to see as effectively adapted.

Kelly Green

***Episode 4 Spoilers*** For context, the teacher is Kuina's father. In the manga we do see a body being carried out of the house, but it is covered over by a sheet. According to her father, she died after falling down the stairs. If this is accurate, it shows how randomly death can strike. It's not often you see accidental death in fiction.

Dana

Is his grandfather a villain though? I've read enough shonen manga to get the antagonist who will be ally vibe from him. I don't think he's going to be the villain. Eta: just watched episode 4

le

Man I need your next reactions asap, it’s so much fun watching it along with you 😭

Ninni

I love that they used an instrumental variation on We Are in ep 4. It was a nice little nod to the anime.

Ezekiel

your reaction to sanji's introduction is hilarious XD

Jhaernyl

This is the first time since the beginning of the manga and the early 2000s that I actually like Sanji, so I am really incredibly grateful to the actor and everyone who worked on his production for actually managing to unearth my ability to like him. Now here's hoping they keep him on this good keel.

Jhaernyl

You reaction to Mihawk is absolute perfection :D

poyopachii

Kuina's father is sus. ive never trusted that man, in the anime, manga or live action. He was the one who told Kuina that girls will never be able to be the world's greatest swordsman, he put that doubt in her.

It depends on how someone views authority and Officers/governmental bodies. He has a sense of justice, and he clearly loves luffy in a strict overprotective way, which is why its hinted so far thats why he wants to be the one to bring him in alive to be allowed to give luffy leniency, but he also falls to the same flaws the marines have rooted in their system. Imagine a really mean old grumpy police chief; people can either see him as a villain or a flawed Hero.

Kelly Green

Episode 5 manga stuff Don Krieg was a villain in this arc whose story line was cut for time. The guy who was fed, who was starving also appeared in the manga, and had a larger role. In the manga, Luffy did know he could do that. Back in ep 1, you could see Mihawk in the crowd at the execution, but he also has a boat nicknamed the coffin boat, which you can see amidst the crowd of boats setting sail. Sanji is really dialled down, which is great. Finally, Nami's point about Luffy is pretty hypocritical, since she is clearly hiding stuff from the crew, but it also highlights something that is seen throughout the story, though I don't know how much of it we will get to see in live action, and that is Luffy doesn't talk about his past, except for about Shanks really, but that said, he isn't the only one.

nina host

I absolutely was not expecting this to be a show you'd react to but I'm so happy it is. I grew up watching and loving one piece and it's so cool to see a fresh perspective/reaction from someone who hasn't watched the animated version

Elliot

I’ve never mentioned it before but it keeps happening. I always get a message on Drive that says ‘Video still being processed’ so I can’t watch it :( and with my internet I can’t download. Is there a way to solve this you know of? It been happening for a few months since subscribing and after a few days of waiting it usually works properly again but it would be great not to have to wait for days 😅 sorry for the bother. From what I’ve seen I’m excited for these reactions though!

Bethany R

when you pointed out that luffy’s grandpa didn’t respect /his/ dream…ouch

neonseas

I do think you might be forgetting a little bit that in a show that is stressing a person's dreams so much, it matters that Coby's dream is to be a Marine. Him having some sort of realization that his dream isn't what he thought would take a whole lot out of that message about dreams.

brittanydiamond
>>116842320

Yikes, yeah Google can take its sweet time processing some things. It's not ideal, but currently the only non-downloading option I currently have (finding sites willing to look the other way on copyright *and* do everything I need is a challenge). If/when I find a solution that won't make you wait a few days, I'll jump on it. <3

neonseas

also w/ ep6, welcome to the ZoLu ship. The spontaneous vow just fucking gets me. like what the everloving hell. You can't give me that kind of scene and not have me ship it.

milf gerard way

spending the start of the arc on fun and games and then oda crushes you with a tractor huh,,,,,you've done it, you've broke one piece to its bare essentials (also he's not on social media, the man barely even shows his face which good for him i guess). off to the last two episodes and more soulcrushing pain, i hope you have fun (it's very fun, that arc in the manga quite literally changed me as a person lmao). i loved episode 6, sanji's backstory, and everything about zoro and luffy,,,,,i liked his confession better here cause it kinda hit more after seeing the crew take care of zoro but i kinda wish they kept zoro calling luffy pirate king. though the found family vibes almost make up for it, even considering nami's betrayal and trauma. see you in arlong park, bring tissues ! (you know cause fishmen. water. absolutely not because you're gonna cry)

milf gerard way

sidenote about sanji's suit - he wears them pretty often even in fights, the man always either has the best or the worst drip in the crew at any given moment. basically, season 2 i wanna see more of him kicking ass dressed like a proper gentleman but also dressed in an awful hawaiian shirt, shorts and crocs. i hate him (affectionate). oh and also nami reading the story of noland the liar isn't only foreshadowing for her and arlong but also a cool easter egg cause the book is pretty important later on but i probably shouldn't elaborate on that lol

Ezekiel

im literally having so much fun watching your reactions

Yowela
>>116834936

I was also surprised so I came here wanting to see if it's queer media and I just missed it?

neonseas

Hahaha the comment about Koby and Helmeppo.... yeah, that is a seriously underappreciated ship. another underappreciated one is these 5 as a group.... actually OP is pretty much solid gold if one is a multishipper. It's kinda funny that the only one you mentioned from the crew, Zoro and Sanji, is pretty much the only one I don't do. I really don't do argumentative pairs ever, kinda runs counter to my tendency to use fandom as a comfort crutch. more stressful than comforting. but that's just me ofc.

neonseas

also to speak to your comments about Luffy's dad... There is actually an easter egg in the show. but it's the kind of thing that you would have to know to recognize. ;P

Shala

Would you believe me if I told you the manga is even better? One Piece pretty much ruined reading for me. Been reading for 17 years and I've yet to find a story I enjoy more than this.

Dana
>>116985968

Have you read Kazuya Minekura's 'Saiyuki'? It's about found family, contemporary manga adaptation of 'Journey to the West'. There are a few themes in One Piece that are similar in Saiyuki.

Beny
>>116995330

Interesting, maybe I just never delved that far into the fandom but I never really saw hate for her, and just that she is very popular. But weird corners of fandoms exist everywhere.

Max

Actually now that I think about it, the dynamic between Luffy and Zoro kinda reminds me of one that's going on with Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling from The Lost Tomb series. A lively optimist that always gets in trouble, and a stoic martial arts master that always gets him out of them. I know that in One Piece anime and manga the characters are a bit different (although I don't remember much tbh), it's just my view of them as of Live Action. A strong bond between people who get each other's back in different ways is one of my favourite things in the world ~

milf gerard way

yeah this one really hits you right in the feels huh. as someone who identifies with nami's backstory a little too much, even watching it again through your reaction made me cry.

milf gerard way

it's interesting that they leaned into what we learn later about the fishmen - cause in the original east blue we basically only know they're racist towards humans and here we find out they're actually an extremist group of members of an opressed race and i wonder what first-time watchers think about this

milf gerard way

but the thing that was basically identical to the manga was nami's help me moment, and i've seen people complain about how luffy shouting "of course i will" comes off as cringy in the live action and ruined the scene, and like,,,,,,,come on it's luffy, the sun of my life, stupid silly cringe baby pirate king, like, we've all seen his introduction and some people are complaining *now* ? idk i loved it, off to the next ep and kicking some fish ass ^-^

milf gerard way

one question tho, does pointing out differences between manga and live action in the comments piss you off ? cause some reactors dont like that but technically i haven't spoiled any plot point that wasn't in the live action so idk

Jack
>>117011600

Dude just edit or reply to your first comment so you don't have to spam so many for every new thought you come up with in the span of an hour

AJ Evers

Hello, I'm new here with a quick question, is there any information about the episode 8 reaction?

skye
>>117011289

omg i agree with this!! i was watching the "help me" moment, as well as luffy shouting "of course i will" live action vs anime and, imo, luffy saying it in both versions gave off the same energy so if people didn't find it cringe in the anime, idk why they thought it was in the live action. idk if it's bc people find live action cringe in general, but i personally loved it too!

Beny
>>117039171

She will update this post at some point and the reaction to episode 8 will be here. There is no concrete schedule when this will happen, so just turn on your notifications and you will get an email when this post updates.

Ninni

Yes, this was a western live action anime adaptation that was actually done right (unfortunately they oftentimes don't seem to work). I think the people writing and directing it must have been fans of the original. In my opinion it really kept to the spirit of One Piece and if it's not renewed by Netflix I'll be so disappointed. So I'll be here with you for season 2 WHEN it arrives.

neonseas

Nami's tattoo isn't just a tangerine vine, it's a stylized pinwheel with a tangerine :)

Ezekiel

I don’t know if you noticed but the barrel the straw hats put their feet on is the same barrel luffy got in in the beginning of the series!

Ezekiel

also the straw hats are wearing their "classic" outfits that they do in the anime/manga!!

milf gerard way

i'm pretty sure season 2 is gonna happen once the strike ends, cause apparently the scripts are already written and numbers-wise s1 is doing better than wednesday and stranger things 4, which, extrermely sexy of us crew ^-^ and yeah now you know why so many people have been going crazy for this series for longer than i've been alive (and the doctor who comparison at the end - absolutely makes sense, i've seen dw referred to as "br*tish "people" 's one piece" lmao). but if that's not gonna happen fucking somehow then the manga is the way to go i think, unless you wanna make reactions to the anime (did i say that in a comment already i think i did lol). regardless, i'm glad you loved our favourite found family <3 see you on the grand line

nina host

I'm glad that the one bit at the end remained true to the og and gave us that shanks and mihawk vibe that I've always loved. The teaser at the end is for another great character that I'm not going to spoil and just hope they do justice to when an eventual season 2 comes. In terms of shipping, one piece is a blessing cause there's so many characters and the core crew have so many interesting interactions

Dana

This was truly enjoyable. Thank you, because otherwise, it might never have caught my attention.

Bethany R

seconding the previous comment, i wouldn't have watched it so soon if not for this reaction series and now i'm SO HERE!! cannot wait for season 2

Bethany R

fun fact: i’ve been watching breakdowns, and you can see young mihawk (and shanks) in the crowd in ep. 1 during gold rogers’ execution! i remember you being like “omg who’s that”

Kelly Green

Personally, I am a bit of a Luffy/ Sanji shipper. That said I love this adaptation, but the emotional beats can hit slightly different. The scene where Sanji tells Luffy about the All Blue in the manga, he just comes alive, and Luffy just listens without any judgement, and it's amazing. Anyway, Luffy really is the one who listens, but what he hears isn't just what is spoken and that makes for a really interesting character.

Shay Wraithfield

I absolutely loved your reaction to the whole series. I've been a big OP fan for a very long time and I felt so many emotions seeing you get drawn in. I think as a little treat for yourself, you should react to all the OP anime openings. Now that you love the characters, what you see in the openings will make your heart want to burst with emotions. I would never beg you to commit to watching the anime but I think you would adore the suckerpunch of happiness that is watching OP openings!

Shala

Here are my favorites episodes of the anime in East Blue. I would recommend you check them out (in sub) if you want to have the full experience since the live action cut out so many things to save time. Episode 4 (Luffy’s backstory) Episode 6 (meet your new favorite character: Chouchou the dog) Episode 19( Zorro’s backstory) Episode 29 (Sanji’s goodbye) Highly Recommend!!! Episode 35-36-37 (Nami’s full backstory) Episode 44 (Nami’s goodbye)

Kino Crone

I've enjoyed these so much. Of course it's sad that it's going to take forever till season 2 if it even happens, and the anime is just so much of a commitment I've seen creators have their channel swallowed whole by it (not that I mind lol) but I would love to see maybe a review/general thoughts video? You really did catch on so many things! Anyway. I'm sticking around for the gay things of course

PaleoWild

I am so happy I am not the only one shipping Zoro and Sanji! LOL Zoro is definitely my bias... and whenever Mihawk is on the screen... he's definitely my bias wrecker! Men with swords! I didn't expect to love this series so much!

Beny

SEASON 2 JUST GOT CONFIRMED!!! But don´t watch the announcement, it spoils an upcoming character.

Maria Stoycheva

your face during the Zoro scenes in ep.1 was how my whole body feels every time he is on screen XD

Audrey Dappen

If you ever watch the anime or read the manga you should do Arc reviews (if you want to use it for content). That way you don't have to spend the time to do reactions. Just one video when you finish an arc to talk about how you felt about it. It would be kind of fun to keep up with that journey even if its only a little at a time. The entire fandom knows exactly how much of a commitment the full story is so none of us blame anyone who doesn't want to take that on (even if some people will still bug you about it because there are always assholes).

pamela

hi love, if you really liked de story and the show, you should consider to watch the anime! reaction or on your own i think you would really enjoy it 💜

jdkkw Li

Omggggg I love this reaction! I have been in love with bleach and Naruto, but I never really pay attention to one piece but your reaction to this in the live action version by Netflix. Draws me in! If you really enjoy it, I would recommend top anime, adaptation TV series called Hikaru no Go, it is a Chinese adaptation from a Japanese manga, but since play Go is a very important culture in east Asia, it is so fun and so emotional and so gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! That show is definitely my favorite show out of 2020.

Ruuna

I ADORED your reaction to this series, couldn't wait to finish with work so I could keep watching them! I joined your Patreon bc I absolutely HAD to see you react to OPLA in full and you never dissappoint. I started watching OP expecting to ship Zoro/Sanji too but actually came out as a very devoted Zoro/Luffy believer (that whole "I'm totally devoted to you and gonna follow you to the end of the earth because you understood me and fully supported me in the pursuit of my dream" kindred spirits thing they have going on got me from the get-go but especially from ep6, and jealous Zoro later on didn't help either) with sometimes a side of Sanji added as a third to the soup (him and zoro bickering over who's luffy's best boy got my ass - shoutout to Buggy for calling them out lmao) and then add to that shipping Mihawk/Shanks (as you said, IMMACULATE ex vibes going on there phew - Shanks: "I could still take you" me: IN A FIGHT, RIGHT??? YOU MEAN IN A FIGHT???) and Koby/Helmeppo (this one really came out of nowhere for me seeing as I despised Helmeppo in the beginning but they're so adorable at the end wtf) and a bit of Luffy/Koby, but that's perhaps more in a platonic way. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, I loved your reaction and can't wait for Season 2 and to enjoy that journey with you! <3

Hatterandahare

you snagged one on patreon! youtube took down your reacts to ep 6 and 8 i guess so i had to come over here to see it!
