Time for questions!

Also, been quiet lately, everything is fine, writing is going okay, and the demo will come next month as we start tying things together. However, my mother has been back in the hospital (for things unrelated to her cancer, all the tests there are still fine), but is now out again and doing well. Still, both her and dad are aging, so there have been a lot of talk about what to do in the future considering the house, and such. One of those things that reminds you that time does pass, and it drives home that they live over five hours away by car. That, combined with election season in Sweden, has meant that I have tried to stay offline as much as possible because the ambient stress have been bad.

So, let me know what you want to know! The fictional world is so much cooler!

Did the Farm cause Ortega's car crash at Parkfield because of Ortega looking into stuff like cloning which was mentioned in the Faker selfcrash path? Or was that not their reason?

minjostens

So I know the Regenerator can't magically grow back limbs (at least as far as I gather from a past Q&A) but in the case of Chen's guts wherein his guts aren't missing and they're still in his body, could it help him alleviate his digestive issues?

minjostens

We know and have been told by Sidestep and The Void story that Ortega never begs. What are the chances at some point we can make them desperate enough to beg in-game?

2026-10-04 16:00 Apologies if this has already been asked. Would taking the boost drug while using the regenerator significantly boost odds of survival. Would there be a chance of a Belgian mass anomaly type situation occurring? Is there any chance we might get to test this in game?

also just in general I love both games. Super excited for revelations. I'm having a bit of a tough time in the real world right now too and every once in a while, being able to take a break from reality really does help, so thank you for that :)

I can't help but wonder if Sidestep was always written or conceived as having been an escaped Re-gene at the start of the supervillain writing experiment that would later become Fallen Hero. The escaped artificial human raised in a lab as a super-solider is a bit of a stock superhero character in it's own right, and the Special Directive is a bit of a mish-mash of Marvel's Weapon X and DC's Project Cadmus. The themes of dehumanization ,torture, and trauma that comes with growing up in that type of environment in stories that deconstruct that type of character are well-trodden territory by now, the best example that I can think of that I have read is X-23's original solo series by Christopher Yost. It also made me wonder what made you want to tackle those themes and put your spin on them. I feel like Fallen Hero being told in a non visual medium makes those themes feel much more visceral and intense, along with the protagonist being a telepath making it a fresh take on the genre.

2026-10-02 10:00 After my hundred or so playthrough's of Retribution, I can't help but notice some inconsistencies in Argent's Moral Compass. She considers killing a lot civilians a perfectly valid reason to kill villains like Oryx, and yet she is willing to let a Sidestep who blew up the museum with civilians inside off with a slap on the wrist because she's attracted to them, and if they don't blow up the museum and instead blow up blaze and the politicians after she kisses them she's still willing to let that slide. And a thief or Anarchist sidestep who doesn't kill anybody or manipulate Argent into killing a civilian can still get their eyes ripped out if they just repeatedly use their telepathy to win fight's against her. It's especially rich to hear Argent tell them that she should kill them for what they've done to other's, even though she is just bluffing. I just want to know how Argent is able to justify these things to herself, or what reasons she chooses to use.

2026-10-04 16:00 You've mentioned in one past qna that you kept Hollow Ground's gender the same as Sidesteps to avoid tension that could come with them being the opposite gender in certain scenes. Now that's obviously unavoidable with specific scenes involving Ortega and Mortum, with Sidestep slapping/punching Ortega and the backstab ending with Mortum. Naturally a female Ortega reacts negatively to a male sidestep slapping/punching her, although I do find a bit odd that she reacts worse to getting slapped than being punched, and the reason she gives is that it reminds her of her father abusing her. But she lets a female sidestep that slaps/punches her off the hook and a male Ortega does the same with a female and male sidestep, which feels a bit like a double standard. And the backstab ending with Mortum, while not exactly portrayed as being justified, the woman scorned angle with a female mortum sedating a male sidestep makes it a bit more palatable, but a male Mortum doing it to a female Sidestep and then waking strapped to a operating table in the 4.2 demo literally plays out like a horror movie and can't really make him look sympathetic or justified at all. But I would like to know how you go about thinking how the audience would react and taking these variable's into consideration when writing for future events.

What are the specific laws against boost on the East Coast? I vaguely recall something about a boost registry, is access to that public like a sex offender registry or is that private information that only Law Enforcement and the like have access to? What are the penalties for violating Boost Laws? Are there places where people need to test to prove they don't have a boost (presumably through taking a DNA sample)? How does the law handle cases of people being boosted against their will? What about cases where the powers gained were temporary, like from using Void blood?

Angel

how is Ortega w kids? i dont mean it in a "if they have children" way, i mean if they run into a kid who's their fan while they're out in uniform and have time to entertain them a little bit, are they good at it? do kids like them generally? do they like kids? we know Herald likes to pin kids' drawings of him to his fridge and i doubt Ortega has never received smth like that before. so what do they do w these drawings? do they keep them stored somewhere? how do they feel abt kids feeling that kind of adoration towards them, seeing them as a role model?

2026-10-08 06:00 I'm mostly just curious how much knowledge gets you flagged for traffic accident. Like is finding out about the cloning experiments at the Farm enough to put that target on your back or not? Because then that'd mean Ortega found a bigger elephant

Will we get to take Mortum clubbing? The Puppet got my hopes up....

If the Farm knew that Sidestep had gates, would that have made them more valuable or just as valuable as they already were? If it'd have made them more valuable, how much more valuable are we talking?

I'm not one for love triangles(/polyamory) but I have been trying out some of the variations and gotten pretty invested in the Sidestep->Ortega<-Steel versions. With a M!Sidestep who runs away from the kiss bf the Crash!scene and lets M!Ortega know about Chen's feeling, Chen realizes that Sidestep is "self-sabotaging" and tries to reassure Sidestep that he is genuinely cares for Sidestep, (which is aw! but also ooh boy good luck). Question: Does Chen think something similar to a F!Sidestep who's hiding feelings for Ortega and reveals Chen's feelings? It reads that Chen thinks a F!Sidestep has more of a chance with M!Ortega so he's pushing her to Ortega so now he's the one "self-sabotaging" and might not be 100% aware that F!Sidestep is doing everything she can to push Ortega to someone who is on the same side(and is human). Sidestep->Ortega<-Steel triangle is kind of hilarious(though also sad cause it's not poly) since Ortega is just living his life and here we have 2 traumatize idiots(lovingly) doing everything they can not to be in a romantic relationship with him and pushing each other to take the "heat" so they can continue pinning away in silence. Question: I have to ask will we get to read about Ortega finding out what these idiots have been pushing each other to do in regards about him?

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that. Reality can be pretty anxiety-inducing, but thankfully we still have a fictional world to escape into! I'm not a native English speaker and I use a translation tool, so I apologize if any of my wording comes across awkwardly or incorrectly! I'm sorry if someone has already asked this! In the demo, I noticed that Herald knows Bo, but is completely unfamiliar with Rosie, which really surprised me. Will the differences between Bo and Rosie continue to be this significant in the future? And, if we choose Rosie as our lieutenant, will we eventually encounter a Bo who doesn't know us?

I know there have already been some brief glimpses in the first two books of Ortega and Sidestep’s interactions before the Heartbreak incident, but I still want to know more! Will we get to see more memories or flashbacks of their past together in the third book?

Owen you dont need to know

Also also, I don't expect a clear answer but the matching eye color thing has got me wondering, is there any chance HB was HG's real little sibling?

grain 林

Hello! I noticed that in the first game, while you can name the villain identity “sidestep,” the capitalization matters—you can use “sidestep,” but not “Sidestep.” I’m really curious about why there’s a distinction like this. Does it mean anything? I discussed this with a friend, and we think it might actually be a coding issue. The if statement for naming the villain identity only checks for “Sidestep” and doesn’t include “sidestep,” which means you can use the all-lowercase “sidestep” as the villain name. Then, somewhere later in the code, the first letter of the villain’s name is forcibly capitalized, turning it into “Sidestep,” which allows the text variations for “Sidestep” to work properly afterward. At least, that’s our guess! I hope this helps if you were wondering about it!

minjostens

Does Ortega keep a scar from every villain that beats them in a fight?

minjostens

So this telepath/human experiment that Mortum keeps in a tank... Have they been unconscious throughout their whole stay at the lab or does Mortum wake them up sometimes?

mandrake

If Sidestep behaves morally (actively saves people, feels guilty over becoming a villain or not being able to tell anyone, guilty about hurting their friends, etc) it feels like the whole "becoming a villain" plan was an extended breakdown or cry for help; is this intentional? Would Ortega or Chen feel this way about a revealed Sidestep, if they didn't act villainous? I also noticed that Sidestep's attributes are coloured like their tattoos (for Arrogance, Ruthlessness, and Daring) or like their old vigilante alias (for Anonymity, Empathy, and Caution). Is there a significance to this?

2026-10-05 18:00 I noticed in demo 4.1 we get a chance to use the Leadership stat even without being Mob Boss. Being the workaholic he is, would Chen enjoy idling in bed for a while with his partner early in the morning instead of getting an early start on the day? Or does he need that routine of getting out of bed and getting ready as soon as he wakes up?

minjostens

If Sidestep fell asleep on Ortega for the first time ever and Ortega's pager went off (so they have to get up to go get it), for how long would they hesitate on whether to get up to get it or not?

All Blue

Would it be better or worse for HG with a revealed Sidestep that is completely the opposite of their dead little sibling personality wise, or is an exact 1-1 of them, sans their seeming memories of Hollow Ground? From a previous answer, Chen is under the impression that Blaze gave him a fake name. Is Wei suspecting that he’s from a strict upbringing/possibly homophobic background accurate, or is he just projecting onto Vincent?

Max 23

Wanted to know if an Ortega that is dating both Sidestep and the puppet who are the same race and gender but are not mirror images would notice if Sidestep changed their hair and clothes to look more like the puppet, which is something that I did with one of my Sidestep's who was insecure about Ortega finding the Puppet more attractive than them.

2026-10-13 19:00 What does Blaze seemingly think of Ortega's seemingly being paired with villains? Especially with them having a record of flirting with some of them? Would/has Blaze ever flirted with a villain? What kind of hugger is Blaze? How does Vincent respond to someone recognizing him out in public? On a related note, how did he get such good media contacts? Was it something he worked hard for? Has his ties to his contacts ever been strained with his connection to Zephyr, with them being an ass?

Right after Herald takes Sidestep down from the rooftop, Sidestep pops a couple of painkillers that they just happened to have on their person, mentioning that they don't help but they hope it might be their lucky day. And this scene plays out the same regardless if Sidestep is suicidal or not. Now I wouldn't be surprised if Sidestep is addicted to painkillers, they wouldn't be too dissimilar from Ortega in that regard. But I just find it weird that it is never brought up again after that scene. So is Sidestep addicted to painkillers, and would having alcohol as their vice cause any side effects, and also would it impact their relationship in Ortega in anyway similar to an alcoholic sidestep?

Did you ever consider making Shroud an RO? It feels like she might be a kindred spirit for some of the darker sidesteps. Would be kinda interesting to see a purely telepathic relationship

In Retribution the only option Sidestep has if they choose only to kill villain/agents is using the nanovores against the modded casino security guards, which is a very gruesome and sadistic death. Understandably Ortega is afraid of the villain afterwards, I imagine that gave them nightmares of that happening to them. But if Sidestep crashes and is revealed as the villain and they only kill villain/agents, it triggers the monster scene with Ortega believing that they are a Re-gene copy. I wanted to know how Ortega found out that Sidestep killed the guards at the casino if they weren't there, and also why Ortega seems to treat a kill villain/agent Sidestep no differently than a Sidestep that also kills hero's and civilians, did they just take Sidestep killing modded security guards with Nanovores super personally? Also on that note, I was disappointed by the lack of opportunities to kill villains in Retribution since I tend to like to play a more anti-hero Sidestep, hopefully they are more opportunities for that in Revelations.

I’d really love to know—do the Rangers have any fun team activities these days? I mean, do they ever go to karaoke, watch movies together, or anything like that? What do they usually do when they hang out during their downtime?

grain 林

Honestly, I’ve always wondered what would have happened if Ortega and Sidestep had met earlier. For example, what if they had met three years ago, when Sidestep escaped the Farm for the second time and returned to Los Diablos? What would have happened between them if Ortega had encountered Sidestep at that point? Considering that Sidestep hadn’t gone down the path of becoming a villain yet, would it have been harder or easier for them to reveal their secret to Ortega? Either way, I can’t help but feel that Sidestep would have been in a pretty bad state at that point, and Ortega definitely wouldn’t have just left them to fend for themselves.

Marlenne Garcia

What is Elenas favorite food? What about her husbands?

minjostens

Has Sky-Raider had long-term relationships or are most of his relationships short-term like Herald's and Ortega's?

Max 23

This might be spoilers, but am I wrong in assuming that Sidestep will only be able to consummate their relationship with Argent after she uses the regenerator and it all goes 100% as planned?

Marlenne Garcia

What meals does Marcia usually cook? What about Elena? Who is the best cook among the 2? If nobody in the FH universe had powers or mods, who would be amongst the best fighters? If Dr. Mortum met the puppet (Sidestep) in their younger age would they still go through with their relationship? What are some relationship facts about the puppet and Dr. Mortum (shared experiences, hobbies, dates, likes, dislikes, routines, etc)? Would the rangers have followed the same path as Sidestep if they went through the same experiences? If Hood had met Riley what would their opinion of them be? Would they have put a stop to their behavior? What would've been the Doctors reaction to finding out about Sidesteps tailing prior to them hiring them?

Is Ace going to have some choice words for Sidestep if they learn that they slept with Mortum using their body?

Why is it that in the safe Sidestep!stuck path when you can't reply to Mortum's text because you're doing the Re-Gene reveal at Ortega's apartment or you're at Chen's apartment, you don't lose any Mortum relationship points, but you do if you choose to deliberately ignore it in some other paths like Danny's apartment? How does Mortum know the difference between you not picking up because you're busy vs. you not picking up for no reason? Or is that just a decision you took for gameplay reasons to not punish the player for something they had no control over?

Given many scientific developments made from observing and researching animals’ natural capabilities, does Mortum ever watch nature documentaries for inspiration? Or take interest in any animals that can do interesting things? Etc? Could a Sidestep with sufficiently close relationship to Mortum convince them to stop using animal experimentation?

For no reason at all, what are your thoughts on magicians?

Have there been any high profile heroes that are widely considered ‘scary’? (E.g. Similar to Batman) Not just intimidating like Argent, but genuinely frightening? What do the general populace/media think of them?

The Rat King can currently alleviate the side-effects of Sidestep's nightmares, but is there a limit to this? Like will the Rat King still be able to stop Sidestep's nightmares from badly affecting people around them if Sidestep's telepathy gets stronger? Or are we cooked chat?

I'm not sure if we'll be able to indulge in any clone saga style nonsense with Sidestep and Hollow Ground's younger sibling if they are in fact still alive and just being held captive by the farm. But if Ortega meets Hollow's ground younger sibling and believes that Sidestep is a Re-gene copy and also believes that Hollow Ground's younger sibling is the real Sidestep, how would Hollow Ground's younger sibling react?

Is Regina a potential choice as a rival?

I wanted to know how you would feel about people writing stories set in the Fallen Hero Universe with OC's. I've had an idea for a superhero story that I was initially thinking of having be set in its own universe but now I'm feeling like having it take place in Fallen Hero but in Seattle since that's been an unexplored area with a lot of details left currently unknown.

At the end of Book 2 in guilty self!crash path where Argent takes Sidestep's eye, if hypothetically Argent did not have her nanovore swarm and was just a normal technopath (but still with her nightmarish past), would she still have taken Sidestep's eye for controlling her body? The nanovores seem to give her emotions one last push in some scenes, so I'm curious how much of that choice is just Argent herself and how much is the nanovores tipping her over the edge.

Did Ortega feel curious about the new surgery scars from the Farm on Sidestep like how Sidestep noticed new battle scars on Ortega in the sex scene? Did the new scars make them assume Hollow Ground's people injured Step during the years they were gone?

Did the imposters already exist before Sidestep was taken to The Core after Heartbreak?

Barbie

What would the Step!body imposters do if given icecream(/other sweet treat)? Like would they eat it and/or enjoy it or just assume it's poisoned or?

Did the "infection" Sidestep mentions having during the car crash start affecting Sidestep because of what Regina discussed doing to Step in the Livestockdreams vision at the end of Retribution? Or different reason?
