This video will be your companion in helping you to understand the basics. My hopes for this video is that it allows for you to build your practice upon strong and intentional foundations…aiding in a deeper understanding and awareness around ‘yoga’…essentially helping you to add more purpose to your practice. Even if you are already experienced or well-practiced, may this act as a beautiful refresher and remind you of the roots of yoga. In this class, we cover:
- What is yoga?
I also talk about what yoga isn’t.
- The benefits of yoga
Yoga has benefits that span the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual
- The history of yoga
Here, we’re learning about the roots of yoga. Western culture and social media has misrepresented yoga, and so I take the time to briefly cover the vast and ancient philispohy behind yoga…dating as far back as 1700BCE!I believe that understanding a little about the history of yoga will help to shed light on the ancient traditions and values around yoga, which will also help to remove some misconceptions about the practice of yoga.
- We explore prana, nadis, chakras
You may have heard of these words in transit, but do we really know what they mean and what their purpose and functions are? Well I help to break it down for you so the words are no longer just some yoga jargon, but actually have meaning and understandign behind them. Understanding the roles they play helps tie it all together and will help you to better understand the significant benefits of practicing yoga.
- Why NAKED yoga?
I fill you in on why I have taken this route and why I love it so much!
- The benefits of practicing naked
Whilst the benefits of practicing yoga are already infinite and adequate in and of themselves, practicing naked brings a host of additional benefits that take practicing yoga to the next level!
- Naked yoga essentials - what you will need for a naked yoga class
If you’re a beginner with either yoga, naked yoga or both…this segment will inform you on exactly what you’ll need to start out…and it’s not much ;) No expensive or fancy yoga clothes!
- Props and accessories that can assist you in your practice
Props and accessories can come in handy for different practices and can facilitate you in your practice, so I go over some basic props and accessories you might be interested in considering.
- We learn about the Ujjayi Breath and how to cultivate this breathing technique - a practical exercise and some homework
This is the practical part of the session, an exercise where we learn to cultivate the Ujjayi Breath - a method of controlling the flow of air to regulate the length of the breath. Breath is key and foundational for your yoga practice, and so I offer practical tips to help you get started with the Ujjayi breath before we dive deep into our physical practice in upcoming classes.
My naked yoga classes are accessible to yogis of ALL experience levels…from first-timers and beginners all the way through to the more advanced. I offer variations for different levels so that you can feel confident knowing that there will be options available to you, honouring exactly where you are at in your practice and on your journey.
I conclude the class by offering practical advice for your practice moving forward. In focusing on how our body feels as opposed to how it looks, I invite you to use our yoga practice as an opportunity to connect more deeply with your body. Our bodies are constantly communicating with us…signalling what feels good and what doesn’t…expressing what it desires and what it doesn’t. The problem is, most of the time, we either ignore its cues, misinterpret the signals, or we were just never taught how to respond from a place of compassion.
My naked yoga classes are a beautiful opportunity for students to develop mindful two-way communication with their body where, not only is the body communicating with us but, we respond to its needs with tenderness and compassion…from a place of love. This is foundational for healthy body image and self-love.
As we learn to create space for growth and expansion within our individual body, we acknowledge the body’s capabilities and limitations. In doing so, we learn to honour and respect its boundaries. Knowing when and when not to push. Learning to flow rather than force. Knowing when to rest and surrender. In learning to compassionately respond rather than mindlessly react, this awareness and connection helps us to develop a more in-tune and healthy relationship with our bodies as we attune to all the beautiful subtleties of our own individual body. So, every bodies’ yoga practice looks and feels different…and that is the beauty of diversity and an authentic practice.
In learning to honour this and cultivate the above, we are blessed with the gift of developing deep reverence for our body and its journey, thus fostering a healthier relationship with our body and improving our sense of body image.
I hope this video provides you with a wealth of knowledge and the tools you need to build a strong and intentional practice, full of awareness and purpose.
Namaste,
Jessa
