MORE INFORMATION ON UJJAYI BREATH:
This is the breath we aim to use throughout our asana practice. Ujjayi means ‘triumphantly uprising’. This is a method of controlling the flow of air in order to regulate the length of the breath.
- it is done by slightly closing your throat so them hat the breath makes a sound just loud enough to hear. The sound in the throat is made by toning the epiglottis.
- You will feel it in the back of your throat
- An important benefit it provides, other than the control it provides, is that its sound can be used as a feedback mechanism and as object of concentration
General principles of ujjayi:
- relax the brain
- Keep the eyes tender and heavy, especially on the inhalation
- Keep the nostrils soft and passive
- Permit a pause to occur at the top of each inhalation and at the bottom of each exhalation
- Make the inhalation and exhalation the same length
- Make the volume loud enough to hear refinements in your breath, yet not loud enough to agitate the mind or prana
- Make the ujjayi more about the sensation felt than the sound heard
How to cultivate ujjayi:
- Close eyes and open mouths and breathe as if trying to fog up a mirror. This creates the sound and sensation of ujjayi...bringing awareness to the epiglottis area
- Now close mouth and breath through the nose and try to create the same sound and sensation
- Play around and create more or less construction in the throat and notice how that affects the flow of the breath etc
- Ask them to begin treating their ujjayi with a sense of delicacy...exploring how they can breathe more deeply and strongly, yet just as delicately and softly.
Tips for connecting ujjayi pranayama and asana:
- Cultivate ujjayi so that it changes as little as possible from the beginning to the end of the asana session
- Ujjayi can be varied, using more intensity to fuel more difficult movements and more ease to generate a deeper sense of calm
- Deepen asana practice around the integrity of the breath rather than trying to force the breath in attempting asanas...allow the breath to guide you rather than forcing movements and letting the breath catch up
- Allow the breath to act as a teacher...listen to it so you know when to refine a posture, your mind etc
This is such an integral part of our practice and I hope this tutorial helps to boost your confidence with applying your Ujjayi breath to your practice ☺️
Namaste,
Jessa
