You might have heard me praising this book I'm currently reading called: "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. With the risk of sounding repetitive, it's a really good book, especially if you make the effort to apply and adjust it to your life. One thing that really stuck with me that I want to run by you because of how it applies to music for me, is a concept I've come by in the past, but I didn't have the additional knowledge to be able to implement it long term, which this book actually offers. It's about how you actively change your "I have to", to "I get to", and how this small change transforms the tone of your task or ambition, and by doing so shifts your mentality. For instance: "I get to do yoga for five minutes in the morning".One of the important steps, as James Clear mentions, to make habits stick is to make them attractive (and the ones you want to get rid of unattractive). By shifting to "I get to do my dishes so that my kitchen is clean and I have what I need when I want to eat", I no lie feel a lot more inclined to actually do my dishes (I've kept up with my dishes ever since I started reading this book?? Cipher said that it must be one hell of a good book haha). This made me realise, going to different music schools for so many years and uploading music on a schedule, my language shifted to: "I have to sing, I have to practice, I have to record, I have to write songs, I have to perform (and I have to do so perfectly)". This to get good grades and social validation, amongst other things. It became a chore I wanted to avoid at all costs, too much pressure and too much effort (another rule from the book to good habits = make it easy).I get to play the piano?? wow!I get to sing!? woahh!I get to share my experiences and emotions through music. big wowSo while this might seem like a small insignificant change, I encourage you to try it. Worst case scenario you feel a bit silly, best case it'll help you. It helped me sit down on the piano the same night.I'd love to hear what "I get to" shifts could help you? I do also want to add that while this book is offering a massively positive impact on my life, I am in no way trying to have you do anything, I only want to share my experience. As always, take what works and leave the rest.On that note though, I get to go to bed now, and tomorrow I get to have an early night. :D pretty niceNight!~ Joy
