Wendel has discussed and somewhat praised Lunar Lake and how big of an improvement it is over MTL. BUT what's his opinion on it in the context of Strix Point?

Nils

What do you two think of the RPL issues being carried over to MTL/LNL? Did Intel have the time to root cause the issue and eliminate it, or do you think we might expect stability issues for another few generations past 13/14?

Benjamin Cannon

Do you if the Raptor Lake issues apply to all of the Raptor Lake dies or just the 8+16 die?

Joseph Kelly

First off, Wendell great video on the 13th and 14th gen issues it was done very well with lots of great information. How bad could this be for Intel? Could it be bad enough to bankrupt Intel? I hope not since we all want both Intel and AMD to have great competitive products.

Obligatory Linux Gaming question - Hi Wendell. What do you think of the state of NVIDIA on Linux? Recently NVIDIA announced that they will support using Open-Source GPU kernel drivers. Will this change anything in the short term? Also, will a potential SteamOS release for desktop be ready before Windows 10 end of support? Because I believe what prevents Valve from releasing SteamOS desktop so far is the spotty state of Wayland on NVIDIA and Gamescope not working well on it.

AI-Soldier789

Good day guys, what is your opinion on the fact that AMD wants to transform into a more Software than Hardware Company. Is this the way to speek as NVIDIA already clamied the Status as AI Company? Could that be seen as an other reason for AMD to Quit D-GPUs?

Microsoft and ARM – Hi Wendell. In your recent video about Snapdragon you said something about Microsoft identifies that what’s holding back good Windows experience in laptops is x86 thus making a play with Qualcomm to bring ARM to Windows (for the nth time in more than 10 years). When will they learn that the problem is in Windows not on x86? I tried running Windows on a Steam Deck and while it’s functional it doesn’t run as well and doesn’t last as long compared to SteamOS.

AVX-512 on Client – Hi Wendell. What do you think of the state of AVX-512 for client CPUs. We saw AMD adds the support for it in Zen 4 and further enhancements in Zen 5, but do you know why Intel removed it from Client CPUs starting from Alder Lake partially and then fully on Raptor Lake?

ARM in Servers – Hi Wendell. Phoronix recently published a review of AWS Graviton 4 96 Cores. While Graviton still loses to Epyc in majority of workloads, Graviton is very competitive against Xeons. With other companies such as Ampere and possibly Apple entering the server space, are there any fears that they might replace Xeons in some workloads that don’t require the absolute high performance Epyc provides.

What Intel is going to do? - Hello Tom and Wendell. After latest AMD PBO report we can see at least 1 generation where AMD will dominate the market and Intel’s failing CPUs likely will be facing lawsuit, plus their GPU division seems to have no hope to compete on GPU market after RDNA 4 and Blackwell releases, it really seems like the darkest days for Intel right now. How do you think they are gonna get through this and if there’s possibility of bankruptcy for Intel?

Artur Tunkel

oh my god, I had the same question! I guess I’m doubling on that 😁

We see a lot of marketing for zen5 before zen5 launch. I think AMD should just clearly market this: "we are faster than Intel, we have better platform than Intel and most importantly our CPU's won't break after year or two." And Intel can't do shit cause this is legitimate point.

Hi Tom and Wendell. I would like to ask Wendell something more about the servers/ services side instead of gaming: 1. with vmware actively trying to kill themselves, which type 1 hypervisor u think will be replacing vmware and adopted the most? Which one u recommend the most? 2. I usually try to reuse my old consumer class hardware as home server. Is it better for me to go for high end chipsets instead of mid range if i want to avoid the use of ACS override? Is it OK to just use ACS override to forcefully break down the IOMMU group? Is ECC necessary? 3. it seems many companies (especially in JP) host all of their infra and services on cloud services like AWS/ M$ Azure nowadays while we also see a lot of them (usually the west) moving back to on-perm within a yr. What's ur thoughts on this and cloud? 4. Any news on AMD GPU passthrough/ VFIO for the consumer products? May be asking too much questions but hopefully u can answer some of them! Cheers!

PenguinsloveAI

I have a question about Epyc on am5 and I am wondering what is the point. I know on the intel side with the Xeon-e series and w chipsets the plus was the ability to use ecc ram. You can already do this with client Ryzen CPU’s and after watching your video about ecc support on am5 with Epyc, that is not always guaranteed. I’m just wondering why? Thank you both for the excellent content, I look forward to your videos every week.

Linux on X Elite - Hi Wendell. According to Reddit, Qualcomm has a bad rep when it comes to Linux support and now there are news that the X elite iGPU driver was deactivated by default in the Linux kernel due to some OEM driver signing issue. What are your thoughts about that? Do you think Qualcomm is going improve Linux support?

Are all the rumors for consumer Blackwell lining up to be based on TSMC 5nm (4N) process vs moving to the latest 3nm process?

Hello Tom and Wendell I have read and have first hand experience in the DevOps world of the promise of quicker releases failing to materialize in practice due to the increased software development efficiency mitigated by demands for more complex solutions ironically due to DevOps . My question is hardware in the data center also to blame? (I'm thinking of server less, machine learning services as well as k8s)

Hi Wendell, I've enjoyed your periodic updates on ROCm and would like to ask a few related questions. First, how do you see the current state of ROCm and it's rate of improvement? Related to that how fast is AI support progressing? I saw on the Chips & Cheese MI300x review that they complained about lack of flash attention support, but then saw the NScale GEMM tuning which used ROCm flash attention like two weeks later. Not to mention the 1 million token context window Llama3 implementation by TensorWave. Last but not least, what do you think of the AMD Unified AI Software Stack? It was first mentioned at the 2022 Investor's Day and there was a recent article about it on Phoronix. The complete lack of any software for the AMD NPUs is a little embarrassing... My favorite janitor and Tom, nice! Recently I was thinking: Do you think it would be a great idea for Intel to release a mid-range Battlemage card with tons of VRam for consumers in early 2025? It may be perfect for rendering extremely complex 3D scenes, working with high-res video, deep learning @home etc.

Hi Tom and Wendell, what are your thoughts about the current state of Microsoft. it seems like everything is a mess there , all the way from windows, office, azure and xbox. why dont other companies ( including the giants ) create a credible alternative to office and windows ? they have been a soft target for years

QuickJumper

What do you think overall about RDNA3 and the innovations it brought? Most notably they released a functional chiplet gpu on A0 stepping if I remember correctly. To me it seems like they spent a lot of money on chiplet design and then realized they should rather focus on RDNA4.

Dark Helmet

Is Intel at risk of turning into Boeing? A troubled company that because it operates in an industry with high barriers to entry, is very hard to move away from.

Hi, Do you think Qualcomm and Microsoft marketing the new Snapdragon X as a high end solution is a mistake? I recently saw a story on PC World were they mentioned using a new laptop with both the new Snapdragon and Ryzen Ai and the Ryzen system was noticeably quicker. I am a computer tech for a school district and I have recently switched all of our student Chromebook purchasing over to ARM based because they have excellent price/performance. I really feel like Qualcomm has missed the opportunity to target the mainstream. Your thoughts?

How can cybersecurity infrastructure become more resilient to bad updates? What sort of process changes need to be put in place to not crash the world?

Chris Rijk

For the Raptor Lake issues, whether 13th gen or 14th gen, I think a good starting point would be - what can we take as fact (or has overwhelming evidence)? For example, I believe we can take as fact that Raptor Lake desktops are far more likely to have errors in games than any other model. But what about Raptor Lake laptops - is there similar evidence that they are also far more likely to have errors than any other model? Is it just gaming or have other software developers experienced similar issues? Has there been any recent failure data set that didn’t show a Raptor Lake anomaly? Can we be certain that the silicon is degrading?

Chris Rijk

What would you say to potential Raptor Lake buyers for either personal or commercial use ? Can any model be considered “safe” or do you think the safest thing to do would be to avoid them entirely for now? Can Emerald Rapids be considered “safe”?

Chris Rijk

For consumers with a Raptor Lake system that hasn’t had any obvious issues, what actions would you recommend they take? For those who have had issues, what would you recommend? Is it safe for consumers to test their own systems and if so what would you recommend? For businesses with existing Raptor Lake systems be it laptop, desktop or server, what would you recommend?

Chris Rijk

Hi Wendell, let’s say that someone wanted to replicate the Raptor Lake issues and bought 10 identical 14900K systems. What tests would you recommend they run and how quickly would you expect to see issues if they are running 24/7?

Chris Rijk

Can Intel get anything right lately, at all? What do you think about Sierra Forest (their e-core only servers)? I expect Zen 5c to crush it but it seems to be competitive with Zen 4c at least.

Chris Rijk

Hi Wendell, in a recent video I remember you saying that you could get better battery life from a laptop with Linux installed instead of Windows, but that it took a lot of work. Is this something consumers could reasonably replicate or should it really be done by the distros? For gamers who are fed up with Windows but never used Linux before, are there any distros you would particularly recommend?

MooresLawIsDead

(Asking for Anonymous Server Engineer) I have seen reports of 7950X shortages, and usually websites chalk it up to crypto mining...but you Wendell mentioned that game server providers are buying up 7950Xs due to failing 13th/14th gen i9. This is very much my experience as well, and reminds me of the previous Spectre/Meltdown situation. Anyways, at least in the enterprise I work for, the validation time is around 6 to 12 months and thus we would definitely catch this failure....but I have to admit we wouldn't have caught something like this in the AMD processors we franticly bought during Spectre. What type of changes to server life cycle management processes will these data center providers do to ensure that these new risks get captured while still ensuring proper level of ROI for the equipment on a go forward basis?

MooresLawIsDead

(Asking for Anonymous Server Engineer) In an earlier podcast, you (Wendall) describe the issues a company faced with Sapphire Rapids and other that got burned for Ice Lake Xeons and later gone to EPYC. What became of those companies and how are they doing?

Hello Tom and Wendell, Out of curiosity how well does Linux use RDNA3 and is there a difference between dedicated or integrated since Zen 5 is supposedly using RDNA3 for its graphics (I may be remembering that wrong). I am running Debian with the unicorn GPU 7900m and so far it doesn’t play nicely with it. I understand that I could use a different kernel version for that but the main question is would you run into similar issues running Zen 5 with its GPU and core layout in Linux or is this something that will take awhile to bake? Also how well do you think Zen 5 would be in a TrueNAS or Unraid setting as compared to Zen 4 or 3 (running typical docker apps, pluguns like plex, webserver, sql, etc)?

AngelOfCake

Hello, Pushing the envelope on the anything remark. Nobody really talks about Kraken on PS5 and the potential goodness for loading times and ram it can free up in gaming when it comes to streaming in assets. Is there anything like that in the PC space. I imagine it would be a godsend in the datacentre world. Network and disk I/O will always be a problem or am I just hopelessly out of date. Thanks for the great work!

PCDog

Hey Wendell, after your research on Intel’s recent CPU failures, will you hesitate to recommend Intel CPU’s in the future?

Patrick Burns

Hello Tom and Wendell. I just want to start off by saying thank you to you both for all the hard work and exciting content you have given us over the years. My question is for Wendell: Given the recent onslaught of reported problems with several 13th and 14th gen products, should Intel have brought their mesh interconnect architecture from server to consumer-based products starting with Alder Lake. Would this have any impact, positive or negative, on the current situation?

AtlPatrick

Hello Tom and Wendell! I have a Computational Scientist friend who loves the Intel "X" series chips - i9-10900X to 10980XE - for their AVX 512 support, specifically Matrix Multiply and Add. Do the Ryzen 4 & 5 chips support this fully? From my research, it looked like maybe the Ryzen 4 chips had some "256bit hacked to look like 512" functionality, but not too many people test this. Would you have to use the Intel Math compiler on Linux to get access to this? And now you'd have to buy Xeon to get Intel access to AVX512, correct?

Reginald Aryee

Wendell, Considering the current Intel issues, how likely is it OEMs might switch (or more rapidly switch) to AMD processors in the near future? Basically, is this a market share shifting event? As we know, it is common for Intel to offer incentives/discounts at times. Assuming OEMs plan on starting to move away from Intel, is Intel likely to offer better incentives to only big name OEMs (Dell, HP, Lenovo) or to smaller OEMs (OriginPC, CyberPower) as well? Market share: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/amd-takes-cpu-market-share-from-intel-in-desktops-and-servers-but-intel-fights-back-in-laptops Laptop issue and Intel's comments: https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/intel-instability-extends-to-laptops/

Wendell, Considering RAM capacity is not much of a problem today, why do the Windows Page File and Linux Swap still exist?

Hi Wendell and Tom, I’m sure most questions will be about the intel fiasco, but this one is about AMD. Do AMD X3D variants make other 8 and 12 core models "bad purchases" financially ? With Zen 5 supposedly releasing this month, I fail to see any reason for someone to buy the 9700x or 9900x. If they need multicore, buy the 9950X… budget use case? 9600x or probably 7600… gaming? wait for 9800X3D… mixed workloads? 9950X3D or 9900X3D when it inevitably goes on sale. Even in home server workloads, why would you not buy the non X low power variant? I don’t see why AMD continues to sell the 8 core variants without X3D, especially when at sale price the 7700X is only $50-75 cheaper than the X3D at microcenter.

10GHz Netburst

If intel is going to have to replace hundreds of thousands if not millions of Raptor Lake chips with a new stepping, are we going to see another period of supply constraints like intel had with 14nm with the MDS/spectre episodes on Skylake X servers?

10GHz Netburst

So far this last week, Intel's share price hasn't moved much relative to the rest of the tech market, not asking for financial advice, but when and by how much would you expect this to affect investor confidence in Intel? Furthermore, if this were to be a defect caused at the fab as Gamers Nexus suggested could be a possibility, how impactful do you think it would be to the reputation of and outlook on IFS?

10GHz Netburst

With their Strix marketing, AMD took clear shots at the X Elite and it's suitability for general PC/Laptop usage, when would you expect intel to take a swing too?

10GHz Netburst

AMD has always said they are open to other ISAs, how open do you think they are? Do you think Intel would make a move for arm if the opportunity arose? Maybe through a subsidiary, or maybe a manufacturing partnership through IFS?

10GHz Netburst

Do you think AM5 Epyc but instead with the APUs could be an interesting product?

10GHz Netburst

How is Epyc embedded faring these days, I haven't heard anything about it since those wacky 16 core zen 1 and zen + parts.

10GHz Netburst

How much of a feeling of "it's actually not that bad here" have you been having with regards to drivers in the x86 ecosystem now that Microsoft and Qualcomm have showed how bad it can be?

10GHz Netburst

Do you think windows on arm could eventually develop into windows running on Mac hardware as used to be possible with x86 macs?

Nicholas Buckner

What are your thoughts on Crowdstrike? On QC appearing to go down for Crowdstrike and Intel? Is technology moving fast enough people are not only looking for silver bullets to take care of all their issues, but overly relying on them instead of diversifying?

10GHz Netburst

From a question that got on last Broken Silicon: Let's say intel collapses in spectacular fashion and their x86 license is up for grabs as part of bankruptcy proceedings, who would buy it and for how much, and what do you think they could do with it?

Aliasing Anonymous

Do you think that the 5090 will be cut down more than the 4090, and if so by how much? Would they really clip 2 GPCs (>17%) just for segmentation with the workstation cards (which will have more bandwidth this generation)? I can’t imagine they need to cut it down more than Ada on a mature node, especially when they can always sell lower binned chips to China.

Chris Rijk

Maybe one nice thing that could come out from Intel’s stability issues is regular stability reports, whether grouped by CPU, GPU, motherboard, OEM or whatever. Imagine if every quarter we could get reports on the most and least stable components and systems, normalised by usage time of course. Wouldn’t that be great?

KarbinCry

Wendel, how does it feel to be the belle of the ball? And will you bring the puppet court back in session to judge Raptor Lake?

Gian Violi

Hi Tom & Wendell, In your opinions, what's the biggest advantage AMD is not leveraging enough right now?

Gian Violi

Hi Tom and Wendell, How much impact do you guys think the current Intel situation will have on AMDs play for laptop market share?

Thomas Burchsted

Just wanted to say, I appreciate the work that has gone into investigating what’s going on with 13th and 14th gen Intel.

ytrewy

Is AMD/Intel wasting precious silicon by integrating specialized AI circuits? Would it not be better to make the GPU do the heavy lifting here?

Soulphie

Intel just released a new lga 1700 lineup without ecores so i have two questions. Is this a admission that the e-cores where largly responsible for the problems with raptorcove cpus or was this something that they had lined up way before and i just missed it. We saw how useless LPE cores where in meteorlake, will this be the fate of every e-core in about 4-6 years? My buddy has a 13600k and do you guys think the e-cores will just be a bother in a few years for the owners of these chips or are they just fine.
