The next episode of Broken Silicon will see the return of Leo from Kitguru! Kitguru has done extensive testing of Zen 5, Strix, and soon Lunar Lake! Leo also has his fingers on the pulse of everything going on in tech right now, so you can definitely ask him ANYTHING regarding recent tech news, or upcoming products from any of the companies we usually follow!

You have ~24 hours to submit below! Be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submissions considered!

Hi Leo! In your testing of Strix, Did you notice anything different with recent driver updates for Radeon products? I have had to do some doubletakes recently. I am finding that in some recent games my 7900XTX has gained improvement in performance, stability and efficiency. Frame pacing also is more consistent than I have ever seen on Radeon's Consumer drivers. Question 2: With the latest RDNA 4 whispers suggesting that it will be promising, I am curious to know what your personal thoughts are on that.

Hey Leo, what do you think the next 5 years will look like for AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm? Do you think Qualcomm could emerge as a significant player in the consumer desktop market and potentially displace Intel? Thank you.

Manolis Ragkousis

Hello Leo and Tom. What do you think about the recent rumors of Intel trying to sell off their fabs? Can Intel successfully become a fabless company? Or will this be their end?

Gob

Hi Leo and Tom. I have a 13900K system and I was getting crashes in Fortnite and an occasional BSOD when my CPU was stressed for a year. After installing the microcode update and down clocking my 13900K by 300Mhz, I was able to complete a 100 minute Cinebench run without issue. My question is, how long would either of you stay on this platform? My single core performance is approximately a 12900K at this point, and I am not sure how much I can trust my PC going forward. If you were to change platforms, what would be your strategy?

Christian Visconti

Hi Tom and Leo! Early leaks about Navi 48 are emerging from the web (videocardz ecc ecc), soon Navi 43 and Navi 44 Will follow. These benchmarks are probably made with test drivers or even dummy drivers that won't tell much about the real performance of the RDNA gpu but what are you feelings about RDNA4? Is it around the corner? What do you believe the performance is going to be about these cards? Will they succed in taking marketshare? Do you believe we are just going to have 3 SKUs? Or just like RDNA3 we are going to have more than 6 SKU... But all crowding the same market?

KingKoro

Hi Leo and Tom. RDNA4 sounds really promising, not only because of RT but especially the matrix cores for accelerated training and inferencing. Are 32GB consumer versions a consideration at AMD? In my opinion an aggressively priced 32GB variant could be an interesting alternative to get more students/smaller dev teams to try ROCm over CUDA.

Christian Visconti

Hi Tom and Leo! What do you think about AMD implementation of hardware RT in RDNA4 and future software development for AI and RT optimization? Are any news about future iteration of AI accelerated FSR? Any news around Spectral Super Resolution for PlayStation?

10GHz Netburst

What do you think of the age old declaration that "PC gaming is dead" as some have yet again proclaimed after Zen 5 launch?

Woody Chang

Hi Tom and Leo, What is the feeling within Intel in regards to the confidence in Arrow Lake vs Zen 5? Does Intel feel like they can take advantage from AMD's unforced errors from the Zen 5 launch? Also, what kind of performance from Arrow Lake do you need to see to consider that generation a success? Well, aside from it not frying from voltage issues. Thanks!

Cleansweep

Hey Tom and Leo, Given AMD's marketing fumbles over the past month, what do you think they need to do (besides competitive pricing) to sell gamers on RDNA 4, and what would be the single biggest mistake they need to avoid?

Question Generated By JensenGPT

Lunar Lake is the CPU lineup I'm most looking forward to, because on paper it looks like it has the perfect design for handheld gaming PCs. Are my expectations unrealistic or does Intel have a gem on their hands here for handheld PCs and ultra thin laptops?

SaltyInternetPirate

How likely do you think it is AMD will screw-up RDNA 4 naming and pricing to make themselves look bad again?

Ivalenz

Hi Tom and Leo, For someone who will buy a completely new enthusiast system in 4Q24/1Q25, which platform would you go for in terms of a five year investment?

CompressedAIBlocks

How important do you think RDNA 4 is in this market/economy? A lot of people are feeling the cost of living squeeze and if I was looking at a GPU upgrade Blackwell seems like it's not for the average consumer.

CompressedAIBlocks

Will Arrow Lake be Alder Lake 2.0? As in, it's stronger than Zen 5 but people simply don't care cause of what's been happening with Intel products lately.

AnotherChris

Is Zen 5’s efficiency really just a taste of what’s to come for the mobile? I thought it was kind of a let down but now I’m more excited about battery life, is there the potential for like 2-4 hours of gaming truly?

Thalo215

what are the chances that if arrow lake doesn't take off due to apprehension for the raptor lake failures that pat g keeps his job through the end of next year?

Chris Rijk

2024 has been a strange year for the performance of existing CPUs as Raptor Lake has gotten worse due to power and voltage limits while recent Zen processors have gotten faster due to the recent Windows update. Have you ever seen something like this before? Has this affected your expectations for future products such as Arrow Lake?

Chris Rijk

There’s a saying that every cloud has a silver lining - do you see this applying to the Zen 5 launch at all? For example, AMD has realised that their internal testing had a subtle flaw and in turn they highlighted the effects of Windows 24H2 and a subsequent stand-alone patch that benefits Zen 3 and onwards. It also highlighted the performance differences of Windows vs Linux and testing methodologies. PS Thanks Leo for giving us an update video so quickly on the effects of Windows 24H2.

Chris Rijk

Intel has specifically designed Lunar Lake for power efficiency but how important do you think that is? Would it be your top priority in a laptop? Would you give up on using an OLED screen too, as they consume about as much as the CPU during light workloads? Should performance testing and battery life testing be done on low power modes?

Benjamin Oechsli (ex-lee)

Hey Leo! Always wonderful to have you on the show. My question is less about the tech and more the community around it. Do you have any thoughts on Anandtech shutting down, and perhaps the health/future of tech media in general?

Sakosha

Some reviewers (ie Ian Cutress) of Zen 5 processors point to the expectation that coding for its architecture would yield additional performance in the future. When do you expect that to happen and would other mainstream reviewers need to do regular updates on performance to see if it's been improved recently?

Kiln God

Leo and Tom - How do we think Strix Halo and RDN4 launchs will go based on what we seeing from AMD? Also do we see more improvement coming for Zen 5, I get the feeling Lisa got tired of delays from the team made them stick to a deadline.
