RTX 5000 & RDNA 4 Delays - How do we feel? (Patreon)

So at this point it seems almost entirely confirmed that at a minimum AMD does not presently plan to launch RDNA 4 in a meaningful way in 2024...and at the same time the Nvidia Blackwell release rumors have also been all over the place throughout the year - how do we all feel about that? Are you sad Nvidia's dragging their feet and AMD seems unwilling to launch RDNA 4 before RDNA 3 stock clears? Also just in general - how has this year felt so far?

This week seems like a good one to take stock before the remaining releases hit, and discuss how 2024 has (or hasn't) met our expectations, and what we hope for out of these belated releases through 2025...

I am a little sad that 8800xt is not coming out soon, I want the uplift in Ray tracing and the future of FSR 4 that’s coming so I can be compatible, I will be trading my 7800xt for it so I don’t think it will cost much either.

My thoughts center around the XTX having plenty of power for me and that I'm glad I built earlier this year because the next gen of GPUs don't interest me other than price performance trends. I also fear the Gen after won't have much to show but incremental upgrades for ray tracing and other complex tasks. There will need to be something completely new to make me interested in the Gen that comes out in '27. Disclaimer I'll stay with Radeon as I run a steam deck OS branch as my OS.

My 2c. AMD should launch ASAP to eat into the NVIDIA's lunch. Once NVIDIA launches 5000, AMD would only have scraps left over. AMD would have to reduce sales and then cycle repeats.

yes disappointed with AMD, they kind of did the same thing with waiting for RDNA2 stock to clear before releasing more RDNA3 cards. If they are going for market share like they have stated they should be trying to actually do so with good, price/perf cards.

Heyo! Generally, while pricing isn't finalized for RTX 5000 series, I can't see it being good which definitely kills my hype for any of their mid-range+ products. Then the RDNA 4 delay just feels like another fumble. Even if they can't sell their N31 cards I doubt they'll be able to sell them anyways with an RTX 5080 on the horizon likely coming in for only a couple hundred more. Hopefully, AMD will still try to pre-empt RTX 5000 series some with RDNA 4, I think it would look nice going into the holiday season. My two cents anyways.

It’s a missed opportunity but I don’t think it’s that big a problem. Theres nothing out video game wise that tells the market you need a new gpu. Besides OEM’s I don’t see it selling gangbusters anytime soon. Its not like it’s new levels of performance either 6900/50xt owners aren’t going to be running to get it I don’t think since the 7900xt was as low as $700 in some places, and the 7800xt has already been out long enough and sold well enough that there’s probably not a lot of 2060/3060 tier people waiting for it.

I don't understand, how the 7900 XTX was already hold on production and still didn't sell out. With the 7900 XT there where until now no more firesales. AMD said they would like to take market share. Why then not just do it and launch RX 8000 this year with unbelievable price to performance in Holiday season.

Do you image a scenario where AMD's performance gap with Nvidia spirals out of control? What would happen then? The only time they closed that gap in recent years was when they used superior node, right?

I'm most disappointed with AMD, seeing as they have the perfect opportunity to take both mind and market share from Nvidia, but they choose not to. If they would be aggressive with RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 pricing, people would buy their products, yet as it currently stands, they're playing catchup to Nvidia instead of acting as a market leader. This also allows Nvidia to price gouge, knowing that they're able to win over most consumers anyway. However, AMD's goal to focus more on midrange could be a step in the right direction. I guess we'll have to wait and see what price they offer. I don't get the disparity between AMD's processor and GPU divisions. They seem to operate in a completely different manner and possibly that's because Radeon used to be a separate company. What are your thoughts?

Maybe, just this once, AMD can get their drivers and strategy in order before a gpu launch. No price cuts 3 days before launch or random high power draw for some monitor configurations would be nice. One can hope. I wonder why Nvidia is delaying though, just not feeling pressured and they would rather sell the wafers to enterprise? I'm a little sad, but my gtx 1080 has lived this long, it'll do it for a few more months, I just hope pricing won't be as much of a disappointment as Ada and RDNA3 were on launch. Higher end cards giving more fps/$ just leaves a really bad taste.

Why did NVIDIA and AMD stick with TSMC 5nm for Blackwell and Ryzen 9000 series respectively? Did Apple lock down all 3nm supply for 2 years? Disappointed that it seems the only way they could get a performance increase was minor architecture improvements (Ryzen 9000) and increase TDP and RAM upgrades (rumored 5090 specs).

Moor’s law is dead and Nvidia needs to increase die size and power limits to get more than 10-20% gen over gen uplift with the top end cards. Why is it so surprising to games that the prices of that top end card continues to rise given the constant increase in cost? The mid-range is more or less following inflation and performs much better on modern games than mid-range cards in the past did.

I get why with units not moving but I also think it a mistake. Rock and hard place type of situation IMO. I picked up a 7800 XT about 4-5 months ago to replace my 6600 because my gut was telling me RDNA 4 would be coming later rather than sooner, especially the cut down models. I can only imagine that they simply don't care about marketshare/mindshare currently as they're not being as aggressive as they could be. Maybe that aggressiveness comes when UDNA drops and remaining architectures are meant to "maintain status quo".

This is probably the 2nd most annoying year for PC hardware I've followed. (the 1st most annoying was 2021, when even old hardware was ridiculously expensive)What is currently out is too expensive or not worth upgrading to, and there are cool new releases on the horizon that I would really want to upgrade to. I really hoped for RDNA4 to release later this year, since slowly but surely my 6700xt is becoming too weak to play my games at 1440p with decent settings and framerates, especially with Monster Hunter Wilds coming out early next year.

The RTX 5090 specs look impressive. However, Nvidia giving 16GB of VRAM to the 80-class card again does not bode well for the rest of the Blackwell stack. We might be up for another generation of stagnation and price hikes for most of the mid range and entry level. Wild RDNA4 convince Nvidia to finally up their game in the mid range, or are they too high on AI hype fumes to care? When can we expect the inevitable RTX 5060 Ti 8GB?

I totally get why AMD is pushing back RDNA4 if high-end RDNA3 is sitting around. But to be real, I feel like they're missing an easy W by not releasing new, good price/perf mid-range cards for the holidays. If I were AMD, I would do something crazy like a trade-in deal: if someone brings in an RDNA1/Turing or older card for recycling/disposal, they get $100-200 off a high end RDNA3 card. Best Buy did a similar promo this year for monitors, but nowhere near as generous a discount (only 10% off). That would at least mitigate the perception damage of pushing RDNA4 back and help them build some positive mindshare.

As disappointing as it might be that cards are being delayed, I find it more disappointing that we are just now overcoming the 2GB per chip limit on the VRAM that has left GPU manufacturers with more lanes as the only option to satisfy the need for more VRAM in modern games. I realize memory doesn't scale with smaller nodes any more, but it still feels like someone has been dragging their feet on this issue.

IT's good you are doing this Die Shrink now. I am of the opinion that not launching new product by the end of the year may seem odd and misguided, I have to agree with AMD and Nvidia. The fact is nothing, outside of SSD, RAM and purchases resulting from repairs, is actually selling. The last 3 months the inventory at my company has been piling up. We are literally sitting on stacks of unsold AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPU's and CPU's and Motherboard's. I have to imagine that as bad I have it, it is probably far worse worldwide. They are probably seeing the numbers and having to choose to do what is best for the business. In any case: I just wanted to get your feedback on the current state of affairs and how it relates to recent leaks.

There is no delay for RTX 5000. In fact, it is launching ahead of the originally planned 4Q2026 date! This is thanks to the power of AI in empowering GPUs to run AI in order to simulate their creation to enable faster AIs running on GPUs!

I would say this year has had plenty of excitement, little delivery. Strix has been the best launch, Snapdragon actually wasn't as bad as I thought. But desktop has just been full of controversy and let downs. I'd prefer RDNA 4 and Blackwell to launch when they will perform well and when the market is ready, launching near the PS5 Pro doesn't seem an amazing idea, I know PC and console are different markets but I feel like consoles are much more of a holiday season purchase, albeit an expensive one this time 🤣

If you want proof that competition is essential for a healthy GPU market, look no further than the RTX 5000 and RDNA 4 delays. Do we think nvidia would drag their feet as much if AMD was competing at the top end? I don’t.

How aggressive do you think AMD needs to be? I don’t think $500 will be enough for it to sell well launching somewhat next to 5000 since there is no high end. Unless the next iteration of fsr catches up a lot and ray tracing is a home run I think an msrp of $450-$470 is where it will need to be to be this high volume, market capturing product.

With the specs of PS5 Pro, the high end cards typically over 120fps, do we really need newer cards? Has any new games or features come out to warrant such a purchase (for the masses)?

Tom - Personally I'm a little miffed. I get the election year politics and the "sky is falling" right wing media crowd is shouting garbage from the rooftops puts a malise on our economy and slows purchasing decisions. Luckily these clear up the day of the election and there will be huge sales on Black Friday. That said AMD, Intel, NVidia, General Motors, Ford, Stellantis, major appliance makers etc. all know this happens every time "pro business" conservatives are not in power. AMD, Intel, Nvidia should have planned for slow sales and adjusted inventory for a very slow pre-election summer and not have inventory stacking up. On top of political freeze leakers love to say the next thing is so awesome and just around the corner this also stalls sales which is why gear makers like to fire employees who leak news about up coming products... Keep up the good work, though maybe chill on the dates a bit.

I think that for AMD to really move product there are a few things 1) they need to have AI tools that are what universities and college students will gravitate to because of the value and size models they support, that means they need more than nVidia ram, like 32GB, even if that means closer to $1k. The reasons are that it limits nVidia sales (which if your competitor has moreoney that just keeps coming in, they can do anything to you market wish, cutting off income streams to competitors is like sieging a castle) They need the up and coming AI students to prefer AMD because they know how to you it, that is where their experience is. For gamers and developers, large memory graphics cards will result in more complex games and if market demand for the product exists, we will see more powerful cards in larger volumes pushing down cost

(maybe for loose ends) should Microsoft go the way of Apple? Should they make a windows os that runs on top of Linux? Then they can focus on UI experience and not have to worry about WSL, kernel support for these specialized processor cores, etc... they could also have an Xbox os and you could potentially dual boot or "switch boot" to Xbox and then claim all PCs with Win/Xbox are Xbox sales. Note: not a Microsoft fan but it seems to me like something they might claim.

If AMD has so much unsold RDNA3 that it will last through holidays even if they slashed prices right now, then plan for a strong launch in February. Otherwise I think that strong sale on current high end and launch in mid November with decent supply. Combined with X3D I could see it as succes. Just don't "paper launch" it week before Christmas. This year had strong promises but so far I don't really bother to remember which company has which Ultra AI X Elite chip.

I'm really excited to see how RDNA 4 fares against Nvidia in RT, AI Upscaling and power efficiency. It's a bummer we're not seeing it sooner paired with the 9800x3D, but I think gamers ought to be happy with priced for clearance RDNA 3 cards. I think it's a pretty favorable time to jump on a build if you need an upgrade, especially considering the only thing likely to actually raise the bar will be Blackwell.

I've been an NVIDIA user from the 600 series through the 30 series, but I'm looking for AMD now due to Linux support (thanks Windows 11!). Hoping the 8900 XTX (or whatever high-end RDNA 4 is called) is good, otherwise will just get a 7900 XTX.

I have a high end gaming PC (7800X3D, RTX 4090, 96 GB RAM), so I'm chilling. I'm grabbing an RTX 5090 whenever available, they can take their time. I'm already enjoying gaming quite a lot already anyway.
