Broken Silicon 291 will see the return of Matt from Alderon Games! Matt was key to breaking the story of Raptor Lake failures, and he has A LOT to say about recent developments in GPU and CPU! We can honestly talk about anything, but at a minimum we plan to discuss:

Battlemage / ARC GPU Drivers

Nvidia & RADEON GPUs

Qualcomm Snapdragon Updates

Unreal Engine 5 Rendering Problems

FSR vs DLSS vs XeSS

Ray Tracing having a lot of noise / TAA / TSR

PS5 Pro

Nintendo Switch 2 & eShop issues

Cloud Storage / Self Hosting

Gaming Handhelds

Kernel Level Anti Cheat

Linux Gaming / Steam OS / Steam Deck

Do you think DLSS vs FSR is a similar situation to GSync vs FreeSync? In that while Nvidia solutions have generally been better, there will be a point in time where people stop caring and just go with the open source implementation.

How has the transition from Intel to AMD in your servers (and work machines?) been following the 13th & 14th gen instability debacle? Do you wish you'd made the change sooner for other reasons now that you've done it? Also, do you still get customer complaints about "your broken game" even after months of Intel's "fix" being released?

GrandDemand

There's been extra noise recently about game studios using AI in their development pipeline: an example is Activision/MS replacing (or trying to) CoD zombies voice actors with AI models. Has your studio or other studios you know of implemented generative AI into the game dev process? Do you think there's an ethical way to do that and if so what kind of things would these models be helpful for? Thanks

GrandDemand

How did you start your game studio, and scale it from there? Is the path your studio followed typical of others/how unique is it

This is pretty open ended I guess but how do you guys see the console landscape? Is it healthier than ever? Is it more boring than ever? Think it's gonna burst with excitement a Steam console? I think it's honestly a little boring, but that could just be nostalgia talking here.

Trevor Renfro

Have either of you happened to hear about the Nintendo Switch 2/Super Switch release timeframe? Still no official announcement thus far.

How likely is SteamOS to become available for consumers to install, whether alongside Windows or Linux, or by itself in place of such operating systems. Also, why doesn't Steam support other 2FA methods than their proprietary one? It feels bad using an application for only one thing, and it's not like SMS or electronic mail are secure.

UE5. This engine is beautiful but it takes way too many resources, pretty much all the games stutter and the visuals often times don't warrant the performance you're getting. Is this inexperience, engine limitations or hardware limitations?

CompressedAIBlocks

Is kernel level anti cheat actually required or is it just the easiest way to provide feedback/catch cheaters for devs? I get why you might want this but there are some pretty hefty downsides either with privacy or low level access to your PC. I recently started playing Delta Force and it uses this type of anti cheat, hasn't totally bothered me but it's something I still keep in mind - I would prefer it not to exist.

PatalJunior

What about the flawed temporal aa that it uses and basicly it relies for 99% of it's systems.

CompressedAIBlocks

Two part question here. When do you guys think we'll see the first "PS5 Pro" game? I know it won't actually be specifically for the PS5 Pro but I mean in the sense that a game is designed that it will have the Pro hardware to leverage. Matt - is your studio excited for the PS5 Pro?

PatalJunior

Too add on this, nowadays games seem more blurry and smeary than the 8th gen games, is the nature of these unoptimized recent titles, UE5 bring all these "checkbox workflows", and developer lazyness.

CompressedAIBlocks

Do you guys think that raytracing has hit a point where it should be a consideration during a GPU purchase? I feel like we're close to this point, but not quite there.

CompressedAIBlocks

I agree with all that, and this is what this question is meant to address. It still is a beautiful engine with what it can accomplish, poorly utilized IMO.

From a developer perspective is it more economical to do a full Linux native port or to support Proton and run the Windows game on Linux?

PCDog

With the success of the Steam Deck, do you think more devs will start supporting Linux gaming?

SaltyInternetPirate

Hi, Matt. I often see your frustrations with developing for Windows on ARM with that Snapdragon, so where do you think the majority of the blame lies? In Qualcomm's driver support or in Microsoft's implementation for the new instruction set?

Lucas

Hi Matt, what is sentiment like for the Switch 2? It has more RAM than the Series S, but not by a lot. Is it enough and will it be enough for 8 years? The OG Switch got very ambitious ports because of the large install base, Switch 2 will not have that to rely on, not to begin with anyway.

NVIDIA and AMD have taken fundamentally different philosophical approaches to ray tracing optimization through software. NVIDIA focuses on maximizing raw ray tracing performance by fine-tuning the interaction between their dedicated RT cores and the rest of the GPU pipeline, optimizing areas like shader execution reordering and denoising to push the boundaries of what's possible with their specialized hardware. AMD, meanwhile, has concentrated on making ray tracing more efficient and integrated within their existing compute architecture, working to reduce the resource overhead through optimized BVH traversal and better memory management, essentially trying to make ray tracing a more natural extension of their general-purpose computing approach rather than a separate specialized workload. Considering the different approaches to ray tracing optimization by AMD and NVIDIA, which architectural strategy is proving more future-proof: NVIDIA's dedicated hardware acceleration focused on maximum performance, or AMD's integrated approach prioritizing efficiency and resource optimization?

QuickJumper

What is the current competitive landscape between NVIDIA's DLSS3 and AMD's FSR3 in terms of game adoption and implementation quality? With FSR3 reportedly reaching over 50 supported games, how does DLSS3's adoption compare, and what patterns are emerging in the real-world quality of frame generation implementations between these technologies

What are the challenges in developing for what is becoming a very large range of vram amounts across laptop/desktop/console?

How accurate is Threat Interactive's analysis of optimization and performance issues in Unreal Engine? It's great that there's someone this stuff down, but it does seem kind of strange that you don't see more established veteran devs also doing this kind of content (as far as I know).

Hi Tom, do you see any chance of IFS getting any contracts if the new administrations (potential) tariffs make all chips from outside the US more expensive?

Chris Rijk

Where do you think the PS6 should focus on improving relative to the PS5 or PS5 Pro? More raster performance is probably a given but would you spend all the budget on that? How much would you prioritise raster vs RT? How CPU limited do you feel on the current PS5 and would you prefer faster cores or more cores? How useful would more system memory be and what do you think the ideal total amount would be? How useful would more I/O performance be?

Chris Rijk

In PC gaming, APUs have been replacing low-end discrete GPUs. From a game developer’s perspective, do you have a strong preference for one or the other? In general, APUs are more GPU constrained compared to low-end discrete GPUs but have more VRAM - does that make APUs easier or harder to optimise for? What do you think about higher-end APUs like Strix Halo?

Chris Rijk

Gaming on Windows on ARM with Qualcomm has been terrible. How much of this would you put down to Qualcomm’s GPU drivers and how much is down to the OS itself? If you think it’s mostly the drivers then would you expect gaming to be fairly smooth on AMD’s Sound Wave or Nvidia’s ARM based APU, since they should be able to just use their existing drivers?

Chris Rijk

I've seen lots of complaints from lots of people about UE5 in recent months. Is it really a problem? Are those problems unavoidable? If it’s so bad, why are so many developers using UE5? Is UE suffering because the focus is more on adding new features rather than improving existing features? It’s been reported that UE 5.4 improved rendering performance - is this something that you’ve seen in practice?

Chris Rijk

Apart from the likes of image upscaling, do you have any plans to use Machine Learning based AI in your games? For example, to help auto-generate better levels or for dynamic dialogue with NPCs or for computer controlled opponents or allies to have much more advanced behaviour than pre-scripted “AI”. What about using such technology for simple QA tasks? How quickly do you expect the industry to adopt such technologies and what do you think Project Amethyst should focus on?

avaloth_

What is the impact of Intel entering the GPU game from a development angle? Considering that each vendor requires its own set of custom work for features and optimizations, does the work required scale linearly or does it stand out compared to the established vendors? Any 'surprises' you ran into when exploring developing for Arc?

transpose1195

One of AMD's goals for RDNA4 is greater market share and therefore greater developer support. Is there a market share percentage above which support for things like FSR start to become less optional? Can AMD get there with a strong showing this year?

Chris Rijk

For games development, how costly is it to support new and different OS and driver versions vs different hardware? If you could bake your games into a self-contained image with a minimal OS and drivers that could then be run as a guest OS, would that make life easier for you? This could be implemented with GPU Passthrough for example. Assuming it’s done well, do you think it would be a better user experience as well?

Do you think it would make sense for Sony to build it's own game engine? Do they have enough resources to attempt such a move at all in your opinion?

Dark Side of the Force

What do you think would be the tipping point for big multiplayer game to adopt SteamOS specifically? And what is the pain point that prevents them from doing it any sooner? The scares of cheaters? Or being having another platform that they have to provide support for?

BaconHouse Collective

What kind of adoption would it take for most Devs to provide Linux support on their anti cheat softwares? Do more devs have proprietary anti cheat or just use a 3rd party?
