Unsurprisingly, the talk of the town today has been the supply and demand surrounding recent GPU launches...and we want to talk about it! Write in below with your thoughts on the GPU market, how Nvidia is handling RTX 5000, and how AMD is handling RX 9000...

You have ~2 hours to submit. (Sorry for the short notice)

I noticed quite a few drops of the XFX Swift and Mercury at Best Buy, but I haven't found hardly any drops for 9070xt models with a more reasonable size such as the Asus Prime OC or Gigabyte Gaming OC or Powercolor Reaper Did those all go to Microcenter or what?

Sakosha

I feel like AMD will inevitably screw this up by ending rebates and then allowing AIBs to price at 20%+ premium to MSRP. But unlike 2020-2021, there is no chip shortage this time, so they'll have no excuse. Hope they'll prove me wrong

AI-Soldier789

The Supply for the 9070/XT was good enough and the prises were high but bareble. The big surprise was, that Mindfactory had no cards and seems they go out of business soon. So I was not in the right shop. Still 2 Minutes after the start of Sale I could order one Acer 9070XT for 799€ what was on the lower side.

rb racer

Went to MC-Tustin this morning, waited in line for 3hrs and was able to grab a XFX at MSRP(599). The only units that were sold out were the Sapphire MSRP models.

Didnt think this would escalate to 2021 level "shortages" ie price bumps instantly now, as multiple tweets say, MLID, HUB-Steve.... and looking couple stores over, yes in euros 700 and 800 euros seem new baselines (has 25% VAT), which roughly equals those USD levels mentioned after rebate period. So I managed to get reaper non xt. These may become rarer than rubies during this spring. I had XT in cart but 16.05 it already said out of stock, remove product. Now some 8 hours later of course all msrp or anywhere near that are gone. Midrange now seems to begin from 700, not 400-500 it was 2020/21 Trying to say, initial reactions especially for those people managing to get a card today was excitement. But it was being one of lucky ones. Looking to buy some tomorrow and AMD also has different story. As HUB steve said, need to compare prices retail to retail right now, not theoretical, manipulated MSRPs both companies now skew a lot. Apart from having stock in store pages, people report and I experienced problems in payment system, needed to try couple times to register. Some people reported even whole store was down sizable amount after launch (even 1-4 hours or more) due to bots apparently bombarding many store sites.

Ronigan

Today I learned that I wasn't ready for the level of demand we saw for MSRP models of the 9070XT. I planned a half-day at work, thinking it would give me enough time to drive to Micro Center and buy the model I wanted. I should have been at the door when they opened. $550 would have been nice, but it only really matters if AMD could make enough 9070XT's to fill demand in the first place. AMD would have been stupid to attempt that extreme level of production without a psychic foresight of this current market.

Rootknight

Stock is absolutely there, I have seen people fail to get a card in EU regions but overall it seems anywhere you have a phisical retail chain you could buy a card relatively easy (if you were OK not paying MSRP), I would speculate that this is the biggest GPU launch AMD has ever pulled

CompressedAIBlocks

How do you guys honestly feel about AMD not being "the honest good guys" now with MSRP pricing? I am personally mixed on it. I can accept GPUs are more now (even if I hate it) but I still think MSRP should be more than one or two models. Am I wrong with thinking that? P.S. 9070 series even slightly above MSRP is the still a better buy, not hating on them.

Rootknight

Another EU post, 9070 is MIA right now, there are very few listings on Amazon and they are either pre-orders or they are priced the same as 9070 XTs

Fred Fredburger

launch seems good overall, good supply and plenty of interest in it. hopefully restocks come through to help those who missed out online avoid scalped card costs and push the gpu market down from the seller's market its been for a month or so

CompressedAIBlocks

I see people bitching about supply but honestly this seems like one of the better Radeon launches to me...people are actually asking for Radeon over GeForce here, it's wild. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Canada this is the most I've seen in stock at launch, usually we get them after the US. Do you think people would have complained regardless because of the void Nvidia left in the market?

Athena Azuraea

So the price of 9090 xt was bad enough. Barely better value than 7800 xt according to tech power up. Then they launch a few cards at msrp. These sell out instantly. Then we're told to expect next shipments to not be msrp. This is just fake msrp all over again, but from amd. They should be ashamed, and that is my opinion. I would love to be proven wrong, though. I was there on launch date, launch time, but there no way I could've gotten a card. They sold out too quickly. I tried.

kjm015

Well, they did it. It seems like AMD finally managed to have a successful and well-received launch without fumbling last minute like they traditionally have done. Reviews are generally positive, and supply seems decent from what I've seen from my local Micro Centers. They even had a fair amount of MSRP cards from what I saw, but those seem to be selling out fast. My concern is that pricing and availability might be in jeopardy after this initial wave of cards. As you mentioned, the rebates that AMD is offering to its partners will expire soon. Combined with new rounds of tariffs and a huge amount of pent up demand, I am worried that stock will remain low while prices continue to escalate. Will Nvidia respond with actual supply to compensate, or have they fully given up on GeForce for AI? When should we expect the inevitable RTX 5060 Ti 8GB paper launch?

Chris Rijk

It’s funny how arguments about FPS, RT, upscaling etc all melt away when one side basically doesn’t turn up. If there’s no supply, a lot of arguments become irrelevant.

Brink0fDestruction

I was able to get a 9070 XT MSRP model in-person at Micro Center, and that was after I was unable to snag one from Newegg (but I do live <20 minutes away from one, I got in line ~9:30). The location had almost 500 9070 XT cards and over 100 9070s. One of the people behind me in line was a guy looking to return the 5070 Ti that he had purchased for $900 and save $300 by getting a 9070 XT at MSRP for basically the same performance. I just wonder how many other people who bought a 5070 Ti have similar buyer's remorse after seeing the reviews, pricing, and availability of the 9070 XT.

Rootknight

5070 is hilariously bad, it's so bad it would struggle to sell at MSRP I believe, I wonder if Nvidia delayed the release expecting AMD stock to deplete significantly so that it has to compete with a 700$+ 9070

dietzi96

In Germany the supply of online shops only lasted minutes and prices were more than 100€ over MSRP (incl. German VAT). I've ordered a 9070 XT, but I'll believe that I actually got one, once I'm holding it in my hands.

Chris Rijk

Any idea how pre-builders and OEMs are going to deal with GPU shortages? I can imagine some of them being worried about going out of business.

AdanFS

Best Buy was pretty interesting. They actually showed the 9070 and 9070 xt as "on sale" for $549 and $599. Standard prices were shown as $629 and $729. More evidence for the AMD rebates.

Corey Kast

Had to be quick to grab a MSRP model but was far far easier than in the pandemic. Biggest gripe is how big most of these cards are, was lucky enough to get a PC reaper. Just about any other card would have required a new case to fit it

matthew saltzberg

Had a 9070 XT in my shopping cart. Checked out. Received confirmation email about purchase. Minutes later insufficient quantity. Order canceled. Total disappointment. Now I might never get one at a reasonable price before tariffs. Total B******* I've been looking for an upgrade for years now at MSRP. Why can't my hobbies require me to just purchase something in a store as opposed to calling in sick and sitting by my computer. Refreshing the page over and over again just to make a f****** single purchase at MSRP?

CompressedAIBlocks

Not directly about these GPUs but I am seeing at my local PC shops there are more SIs/prebuilt systems that have RX 9070s from the get go. How do you guys feel about this? Correct move to build up mindshare beyond just selling to DIY?

Chris Rijk

Does it look like RDNA 4 almost has feature and performance parity with Blackwell? Performance per area of silicon, power efficiency, raster to RT performance ratio and upscaling quality all seem in the same ballpark. Would you say this means that RDNA 4 doesn’t need as big a price discount as before in order to win over consumers? What areas would you recommend AMD focus on improving for RDNA 5?

boomstick

I showed up around 630 due the 8am launch and the line was at 100 or so. By 8am the line was 400 strong, all ~900 cards (319 MSRP) didn't make it until noon. I asked around and several people were upgrading from 2060, 2070s, and 3080s. Nvidia is definitely losing market share this generation, but only as fast as AMD can fill in the gaps.

Rootknight

I also have seen SI systems listed for pre-order with 9070XT configurations when I'm used to seeing no AMD prebuilts at all

Adrian Wujtowicz

I live in the UK, I woke up at 1:30pm (night shift this week) since overclockers was meant to have the biggest stock I was trying to buy there , the site crashed at 1:59 and I was unable to buy or use the site for 90 minutes, I then gave up , went back to sleep at later on put a pre order in for a Nitro 9070XT , at least the price didn't go up and I paid £699 for it but they did have MSRP cards they seemed nice

Adrian Wujtowicz

They still do because A it's not GeForce and B FSR4 is only in handful of games so that is AMD's biggest weakness atm even next gen they will need a bigger discount still but if they keep this up then in 4 years that can change

Eric Bagely

I was going to buy the XT, but after the Gamers Nexus review I decided to go with the 9070 instead. The efficiency and overall power draw was just too good to pass up, and I can live with it being 10-15% weaker. Kept refreshing Newegg around 8am, saw the first listing at $550, and bought it immediately. Didn't even know which manufacturer it was until I got a confirmation email. Went back to the 9070 page out of curiosity and all I was seeing $650 9070s! So, here is my question. Do you think the very concept of GPU MSRP should die? Does announcing an MSRP in today's market make any sense, because it seems to just generate a ton of ill sentiment.

Adrian Wujtowicz

Because lots of people are willing to pay over MSRP? I myself bought a Nitro 9070XT for £699 when MSRP was £569 😅

Chris Rijk

Clearly gamers don’t like high prices and low availability, but at least this will encourage AMD to order more from TSMC. Given TSMC’s supply constraints, more GPUs might well need to come at the expense of supply of other products, such as Hawk Point and Rembrandt.

CompressedAIBlocks

Lots of these questions are clearly in favour of RDNA 4 but let me just ask you the elephant in the room: Who is the 5070 actually for? It has less VRAM, less performance, RT isn't even a claim it has and would you really be doing CUDA workloads on a 5070? Probably not.

JonWickBoomStik

What we saw today was the result of a gaming company that forgot about gamers and where they came from. The profits from AI are more important and the margins are too good to pass up. From the non-existent stock to the countless issues of blank screens, melted connectors, missing ROPs, no real resupply of cards, exorbitant pricing, fake MSRP, false advertisement and poor gen over gen performance. Enter AMD a gaming company that showed it still cared about price, performance and gamers, good stock in the USA at least, multiple cards at MSRP from different AIBs, good gen over gen performance at the price point in raster, RT and new upscaling that performs very near if not better than the competition at times. The flood gates opened up at 9 am and even with a great amount of stock it still isn't enough to satiate the demand for GPUs for all gamers, it was however a great start to AMD gaining mindshare and MarketShare. I can only hope this trend continues and competition resurges.

DeadOfKnight

How many roads must a man walk down Before you call him a man?

matthew saltzberg

Well I find paying over MSRP. And scalping culture disrespectful and I just refuse.

Falto

One slight thing that confused me is why AMD's marketing and their review guide didn't use the 5070 as a comparison but instead compared it to the 5070 ti. In my opinion, it looks weaker and plus the 5070 is the real competitor because it is closer in price while basically destroying it in performance.

Cammi Hudson

The online crap show ended quickly. I placed 4 orders with newegg within 5 minutes. All canceled with that same five minutes. Sold out within that same five minutes. Best Buy sold out quicker; Didnt check Amazon. I had to work so couldnt goto Microcenter and they had reasonable MSRP 9070XT stock until early afternoon. At 6pm local time they still had some 9070XT's but of course they are $200 over msrp. The online crap show was expected but should have taken a half day off to get a gpu.

transpose1195

Like many others, I ordered on Newegg and even got a confirmation email with a delivery date only for the order to be cancelled. I don't blame AMD, but I do blame Newegg. My 6750 XT is holding strong so I'll just wait for now.

Dark Side of the Force

I'll probably start preparing for tech-stuff armageddon. Wish y'all luck!

Backcut

This was my first launch day experience and I had to see it to believe it. I had the Reaper XT in my cart at Newegg at 9:01 AM and they yanked it back out, and they were gone. I decided before pricing was announced that $650 is my “willingness to pay” and I held fast; with other models $750+ and big enough to require a new case. But in the end I’m happy for AMD Radeon, happy for fellow MLID community members that scored a card, and happy with my RX 6800. Cheers!

magneticmanul

Hi Tom, I wrote in earlier saying a $750 9070 XT is a big improvement over a $1200 scalper special 5070 Ti which is the only thing a human can buy. And that's exactly what I saw happen this morning. I showed up half an hour before opening and got a $600 MSRP model at Micro Center - they had apparently hundreds, and lots more of the premium models under $800. Maybe the MSRP price point is gone for the long term but the supply is real and we're in a better place now. 9070 non-XT value will become apparent later as the XT price gap opens up. I wasn't even checked out and people had already sold multiple 9070 XT at $1000-$1200 on eBay. Amazing how AMD picking an appealing launch MSRP for once makes people excited about a product.

Backcut

Hypothetical: If AMD could have seen this coming, would it have been possible to put an RDNA4 architecture with similar performance to N48 on TSMC n6, on a bigger die? Granted it would likely use more power, would it have been possible and cost effective?

magneticmanul

Micro Center must have had a hundred or moreof the Reaper at my location and they were still in stock a couple hours after I bought one for myself. There were maybe 150 people in line ahead of me. Also ample Asus Prime and Steel Legend but Sapphire Pulse sold through early (all MSRP.) There was a huge amount of stock to go around when the robots are removed from the equation. A lot of scalpers who bought premium models at $750+ are going to get burned I think.

nonews

Total failure. Newegg cancelled an order and Microcenter web site claimed cards not in store. All 9070XT sold out at microcenter. Only $650 9070 left (12 hellhounds)

FelixM

My main machine has 4070ti super so not really worth considering upgrade, but I have another one with 3070 that could use an upgrade, but only for the right price. RTX5000 is beyond a joke of course, but in Europe at least for now so is RDNA4 actual pricing. CaseKing has several 9070XT available, but all above 1.000EUR. Still, Blackwell is by far the biggest shitshow of a launch ever. So much so that I noticed my local shops even increased Lovelace cards prices.

A.I.uminum Oxide

Showed up to the Detroit microcenter about 35 minutes before they opened. The line was wrapped around the building spilling into the parking lot. Got my 9070xt after about 2 hours of waiting and they still had MSRP cards to sell after I got mine. An employee was estimating they had at least 700 cards in total and a good portion was MSRP. Was also standing next to a guy who had a friend show up the day before for the 5070 launch. Dude said there were only 2 people waiting for the store to open. Another person next to me said this will be their first ever AMD card and all issues Nvidia was having with the 5000 series launch scared him away. He was upgrading from a 2070 super

magneticmanul

Similar experience in Virginia today. Some MSRP cards available for people who showed up after opening.

magneticmanul

OEMs have contracts that get filled first, DIY gets leftovers if any.

chippi

In Germany every 9070 series card was sold out after 30 min or less! I checked every big retailer website and there was nothing in stock anymore.

chippi

Servus :)

Craig W.

OEM and laptop. People will pay up for an Nvidia sticker regardless of what experience they'll have.

Per Lichtman

My closest Micro Center is in Tustin and I was tracking inventory starting a little after an hour after opening, for MSRP models only. Sometime between 7 and 8 AM I saw 6 MSRP XT models each showing 25+ units. Checking back a little after 2PM there were only 4 MSRP XT units left. At 4:40 PM the 2 were were still there. But sometime between 4:40 PM and 5PM they finally sold out of them. Pretty impressive match between supply and demand if the goal was to sell all of them by the end of the work day.

Athena Azuraea

I almost feel like AMD is playing 4D chess again. They probably went something like, let's price the 9070 XT at $750 because it's that good, and then let's price the lower model at $550 because we won't ship any anyway, just as a goodwill. Then they're concerned about Nvidia's screwup and reach out to creators because they want good press when they release. They're told $600 is the max. Then they probably decided that they can't sell for $600 but wanted the good press, so they created Fake MSRP by deciding to ship a few initial models at $600, but then silently raise the prices afterwards. Hence, at launch, they get good reviews, they get a lot of hype, and later they can milk the market dry because they know Nvidia can't ship anything. It's all up for grabs by milking the market. That's what I figure anyway, because that's what it looks like.

xz

This is way too late but i’ll just say anyway what a chaotic day it was. Retailer servers crashing, MSRP models sold out in seemingly seconds and the prices of all the rest ballooning up to a median price of €1000 for the 9070XT. One major retailers didn’t even have any MSRP models on sale, Dutch retailers have a habit of holding on to inflated pricing for as long as possible so my last hope is to get a MSRP model before the rebates expire or else the 5700XT will probably have to endure another year.

SaltyInternetPirate

Posted 23:10 CET. "You have ~2 hours to submit". Do you just hate Europeans?

JonWickBoomStik

Ya I was at the one in Fairfax, they had pallets according to the employee working there. Talking to gamers there were a number of folks upgrading from Nvidia some were 3070 owners. A lot of them felt the 50 series was overpriced and all the issues they had, and let's be honest with no supply forces you to buy a competitor. I think they will look at AMD differently once they get their hands on this product. Drivers are solid so far, no glitches or crashes.
