I understand you're not economists but the take that tarrifs are dumb and not thought out is silly. The point is to rebuild American manufacturing and blue collar jobs. Yes products will get more expensive, but we need to have a manufacturing base in the US and tarrifs are one of the only ways to accomplish this. It was irresponsible to outsource everything overseas.

Not difficult to guess who you voted for then

StraightWet

And? Who you voted for shouldn't be an insult. Your political alignment doesn't make your opinion invalid. It's expected that the YouTube comments are gonna be cancer on this topic but I'd like to think it can be a bit more level-headed in here.

Non-targeted tariffs without a broader industrial strategy for building up manufacturing just functions as a sales tax on all products. Trump is cancelling CHIPS & Science Act grant funding while also putting tariffs on Taiwan which won't make it easier to increase domestic semiconductor fabrication. It is delusional to think that US manufacturing can be brought back to what it was in the 1960s because the world economy has become globalised since then with global supply chains and increased interdependence. There are limited number of jobs that can be created with increased domestic manufacturingsince a lot of manufacturing today is automated. Rather than spending millions on domestic manufacturing facilities that take years to build, companies will just pass the tariff cost onto the consumer with higher prices so that they can keep similar profit margins.

It’s not an insult but I don’t think there is much of a discussion to be had. That the tariffs are poorly thought out is evident just by the fact that numerous small islands find mention whose only population is staffing at military installations and research facilities. That free and open trade raises living standards for all participating nations was recognized over 200 years ago by David Ricardo. There is a radio address by Ronald Reagan that is being brought up frequently as of late, because he explains in a concise, simple manner why tariffs are generally speaking not a good idea. Here is a link: https://youtu.be/5t5QK03KXPc?si=wdCU5cOd3lDZC3l9 And I don’t think there is any question as to whether the tariffs are dumb, just because of the bonkers calculation that was presented as to how they reached their numbers.

I get your take. But try telling that to auto workers or any other blue collar laborer who lost their jobs due to outsourcing. Free trade can be terrible in a lot of ways. It's not all good. Ricardo, retardo

Lucas

I understand that, but it’s on the government to create opportunities for other industries to take the place that auto plants used to inhabit. Trying to price the competition out of the market won’t make the good old days come back. The world will keep going and all you’re ensuring is that you will be left behind.

how do i get on the discord?

Anthony Davis

That doesn’t make any sense. The most valuable companies in the US don’t manufacture much of anything. The US is a software and services economy, and it abandoned manufacturing on purpose because manufacturing is a lower margin business. Even China understands this and is no longer interested in being the country that manufactures everything

Anthony Davis

This is also kind of like trying to bring back farm jobs when manufacturing took off. It’s just not gonna happen. No matter what happens with these tariffs, it’s delusional to believe we will ever go back to a manufacturing based economy. It won’t happen for the sole reason that you can’t pay people here $1/hour or whatever

Check guides online - in your Patreon account page (I believe) it gives details, I think the welcome email did as well.

Meanwhile I am sure those "auto workers" will be excited to hear an explanation as to why it's good everything around them is getting more expensive, plans to build factories in the US are being cancelled (not expanded btw), and they are about to be laid off. Can't wait to see how this is explained to them as a good thing...

One of the things that I like about this channel is breath of focus around technology in long form. I'm also a big fan of podcast format. It's conducive for consumption while commuting, or while I'm woking with minimal distraction.
