Broken Silicon's next guest will be Josh from the "Just Josh" YouTube channel! Josh has extensively tested AMD Strix Halo, all recent laptop products, and has personally had a lot of interactions with the recent tariff chaos in his business life - so expect us to at least touch on those things...but obviously this is a guest that will be happy to discuss anything having to do with AMD, Nvidia, Intel, Apple, or the semiconductor market itself - so please ask anything you want! We want YOU to tell us what YOU want us to discuss! :)

You have ~48 hours to submit! (Till Sunday Afternoon)

Tom and Josh - Looks like California and other states have a good legal argument and a date in court to put a stop to Trump's anti-American insanity. Aside from tariffs, when does Strix Halo hit prime time with multiple outlets? When Is Strix Halo "next" due? Lastly, I know Apple and NVidia have starting onshoring some elements of production, chip fabs in Arizona. I'm pretty sure AMD has booked capacity at TSMC in Arizona is there any specific news in this area? While we might see server manufacturing in the US, I'm not seeing desktop or laptop "volume" manufacturing in the US any time soon. Do you agree?

Good day, for The next Radeon Generation the perfect naming scheme would be: R5 260 (XT) / R7 270 (XT) / R9 290 (XT). Matching Ryzen naming scheme and the Number on the Box. Then continue to move all the Models up to the R9 class in the 300 Series and finally combine the naming to RX (the X stands for 10) Releasing the RX 490 (XT) etc. The more X`s the better.

I've often wondered why Nvidia bothered spending billions of dollars developing a new architecture (Blackwell) when the 5000 series is barely an improvement over 4000 series and also has the PhysX regression and some driver stability issues. Why not just keep Lovelace in production and save the R&D money? Is Blackwell more appealing for laptop OEMs?

What do you think is responsible for the slow roll out of Strix Halo? I know AMD has historically had problems with supplying chips to laptop OEMs, but it seems bizarre to me that it's nearly the middle of 2025 and there's only two released laptops and a growing trickle of miniPCs. If anything, I expected the miniPCs to not show up until the end of this year, not be roughly concurrent with the laptops.

How do AMD APUs and Apple APUs compare, in your opinion?

Cypto_AI_TechBro_Scam

Why hasn't there been an 8 core version with the full gpu unlocked and 64gb of ram ? That would be perfect for gaming

Strix Halo... why did they pick such a strange form factor for the lead Product, the 13" ROG Flow Tablet? I would expect that people who actually use this APU for productivity would prefer it in a system like the G16, which would offer more space for a larger heatsink, offering potentially the full 120W headroom, more space for a battery and, most importantly more scree real estate to accomodate all those taskbars in Adobe etc. or in my case GIS-applications.

Strix Vanilla... plagued by strange graphics performance characteristics between the 12 and 16CU variants, presumably because of memory bottlenecks. Now that more and more Laptops with 8000MTs RAM come to market. Can those help to alleviate those troubles? The only analysis I could find in this regard was from The Phawx, but he ran the APU at 25W if I remember correctly and didn't see any substatial difference. However, If you game on this APU plugged in you might actually want to run it at 65+ W if the device can cool it and I suspect that here the benefit of that extra bandwith might start to show

Hi Tom and Josh. I've noticed that AMD's krackan point and strix processors have become incredibly widespread in laptops recently. There's now a wide range of AMD-powered laptops available with impressive builds and dedicated GPUs. While they tend to be a bit pricier, I think they're really hitting the sweet spot for most laptop users. What do you think about their performance in real-world tasks and power efficiency compared to Intel alternatives? And are there any standout features in the latest AMD laptops that you find particularly compelling?

Hi Tom and Josh, I was wondering what's the product that has impressed you the most over the last year? And which product are you most excited about for the next couple years? Also more specifically for Josh, whats the biggest grievance you have regarding laptops at this moment?

magneticmanul

We will probably never know for sure, but I suspect HP has some kind of exclusivity agreement with AMD for a time period that doesn't allow them to supply a product that competes directly.

crumbling_earthblocks

Well are we in luck that they picked the biggest turd company (except office stuff) in the business.

The 9800X3D is extremely popular with gamers as a desktop chip but why is there no mobile equivalent? Are OEMs simply not interested for some reason? Is AMD refusing to make them?

Chris Rijk

A recent topic in dGPU discussion is how 8GB just isn’t enough for modern games, even at 1080p, sometimes even at medium settings. Would you expect APUs like Strix Point to be able to beat 8GB mobile dGPUs on such games at higher settings? Unless it’s very cheap, can you really recommend a gaming laptop with an 8GB dGPU? Did AMD need something like Strix Halo but cheaper and sooner?

Chris Rijk

Last year, NPUs were getting a lot of discussion but are they being used at all? Have you ever used one for real work? Even Microsoft has only just recently started supporting x86 NPUs in Copilot. Is there any evidence that consumers think they’re valuable?

Chris Rijk

Nobody I know personally cares about battery life in laptops. I see a lot of commuters with laptops here in the UK but buses come with USB charging ports and trains and airports have mains sockets for changing laptops. Is battery life over-rated in laptops? Who genuinely needs it?

Dark Side of the Force

I know gaming laptop is not your main focus, though would you start hammering on 8GB Vram on dgpu now that it has proven to be not enough? Especially when more and more laptop has standard 2560*1600 screen.

Last year Tom leaked zen 7 plans on going all out with reducing power along the entire voltage curve. Strix halo is impressive already and efficient, but will a Mobile architecture based on zen 7 and its power saving make the recent Risk/arm push a nothing burger like previous risk/arm pushes?

Prior is the theme 999

How are we liking this new and aggressive AMD? Going all out with the zen 6 node, Radeons pricing with the 9070’s and cancelations of the 9060 8gb. I know these aren’t groundbreaking things to do but they are since it’s AMD finally grabbing and executing easy wins.

Prior is the theme 999

How far back has the tariffs or threat of tariffs taken us with those cheaper strix halo products that aren’t over $1800.

Prior is the theme 999

When was the last time a 720p modern card launched? I think it’s a good thing nvidia is launching the 720p capable 50608gb card.

Prior is the theme 999

How will a potential 9050 and the 50608gb look in the face of all these new apu’s and those to come in a year?
