Michael will be joining us once again to discuss everything tech! He shouldn't need any introduction to long-time fans of MLID, but if you aren't familiar with NX Gamer, just think of him as a one-man Digital Foundry with extensive semiconductor work experience who loves gaming...you can ask him ANYTHING! But note he will have just tested the Switch 2, has plenty to say about RDNA 4 and Blackwell, and also plans to give his insight on recent PlayStation Handheld and PSSR 2 leaks...but again, whether its Zen, XBOX, Intel, or Nvidia-related - he can speak to it!

You have ~24 hours to submit below! (Until Saturday Night)

I have hypothetical question. Let's say I have this rig: gtx 1070 or rx 6700xt Ryzen 2700 or 5800x/x3d Mobo B450M from 2019 bought new rest of parts around that era, 2018-2022. How long can I game if I dont play new games and 1080p is fine and just gamee on this as long as physically parts can last? (More of question of current component, fab quality beyond normal warranty periods) More of averages, not outlier 15yo miracle setups. As anecdote, one 600W psu(bronze, decent quality silverstone) bought in 2012 just finally popped before xmas 12+ years old.

Hi Michael, I was blown away by the improvement the 9070 XT brings in terms of driver overhead and its effect on the processor. Honestly, compared to my now-gone 4090, it feels smoother and more responsive. What are your thoughts on the driver overhead issue?

It seems everyone is content with base PlayStation 5 performance for the ps handheld, and I would agree that would be really nice if it was launching this year, but if it’s coming out in ‘27 or possibly ‘28 and has to be around for what I assume is a standard console generation having to last till 2034 with the ps6. Will that be enough or will we have possibly another series s?

I'd imagine a good decade or 2 still, especially with decent case cooling. assuming you don't want to replace anything whatsoever, the first things that go would likely be capacitors, most likely on the motherboard if your PSU is new. It depends how often you game or turn off the computer. I have retro consoles that work fine, but they're left off for months or years at a time. it's the heat cycles that kills the caps. Thermal paste also dries out apparently but i've never replaced that just from age. I remember hearing that for old platforms, its not the cpus that die, its the motherboards that become hard to get.

Who's excited for SteamOS? I am, I tried installing it, but was disappointed to find that using the more console like "Big Picture Mode", video output is limited to 60hz. Almost everything else was the same as a real console (except games with a launcher that requires mouse input). Almost all of my games are on steam and my girlfriend won't touch anything she can't use a PS5 controller with, so it's cool to have a PC experience I don't have to talk her into. I think LTT talked about Microsoft being able to compete by just letting people play their old Xbox games on windows, whatever the chances of that is. Have either of you tried SteamOS or have any other thoughts on the gaming OS competition overall after the Wendel episode?

Hello, which architecture do you think will age better? Blackwell or RDNA4. I think RDNA3 aged relatively well. Will the same happen with RDNA4?

Did Intel fix its problems with Arrow Lake? Looking back was it software level problems or is the architecture just flawed.

Michael and Tom - My understanding is AMD is fully open sourcing their drivers and perhaps added RiscV support. How do you think this will affect the future of AMD hardware?

Michael, what do you think makes a great gaming experience in general? To me, it feels truly subjective—we’ll probably be tweaking settings forever. Even consoles are starting to offer more customization options now. Do you think that's the right direction?

What manufacturing node do you predict Sony will target with the PS6? Since PS5 used TSMC 7nm, and assuming the usual 7 year release cadence that puts PS6 at 2027, it seems likely that 3nm would be the one?

Greetings Michael and Tom, I'd like to ask a question to both of you: Ray/Path Tracing integration in games: Should every game (whether 2D or 3D) eventually integrate some form of ray tracing to realistically simulate the lighting, shadows and reflections in a virtual world or not? There has been the recent launch of Doom: The Dark Ages which I personally don't understand why the developer decided to sacrifice the performance of a franchise that is known to be a fast-paced/high framerate shooter. I personally don't see why I should care about realism to that extent in such a game, but that might just be me. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, should you decide to answer this question.

Wouldn't it be better for AMD to focus on getting out more 9070xts at msp than potentially 9090/9080's? beating a 5080 would be nice and all but having more 9070's at msp would be better long term for market share and software support and growth, redstone wont matter if the only cards to run them are hard to get.

Gamers Nexus recently reported that AMD’s GPU marketshare recently dropped per John Peddie Research, what are your thoughts on this considering the success of RDNA4.

If you were a betting man would you bet on valve sticking with FSR or creating their own solution me Sony that will run better for their linux use?

AMD APU’s have RDNA 3.5 and don’t have the AI HW of RDNA 4 dGPU’s. Do you envisage future FSR updates for these APU’s utilising their NPU’s for noise reduction, for example?

Doom has also always been a showcase for powerful graphical representation. The Dark Ages still runs very well. And use of RT enables a lot of the gameplay. More geometrically complex environments and surfaces allow for a broader palette of environments, especially more natural ones the game is set in. Fully dynamic and high resolution GI afforded by RT is used to make procedural destruction work well. And on, and on. Not all games need RT or will use it; not all games go for realism. But Doom always has gone for high graphical fidelity and complexity. idTech always went for that style.

Don’t forget that the PS5 “slim” went to 6nm and I’m not sure if it’s been confirmed but heavily speculated that the PS5Pro is 4nm. I think what Sony uses for PS6 will be totally based on when it launches. If they go 2027 it will likely be 3nm zen 6 with some features from zen 7 but I think a 2027 launch is completely indicative of if Xbox launch’s its next gen 2026. But if Xbox doesn’t announce anything and will therefore likely launch in 2027, then Sony will push to 2028 and go with a 2nm zen 7 but still 8c16t and a udna2 GPU. I think Sony wants to launch in 2028, but doesn’t want to fall 2 years behind Xbox, if they end up jumping really early which I think Xbox would like to erase the Series S mistake as quickly as possible as more and more games will struggle to run on it
