The next episode of Broken Silicon will see us once again joined by Bryan Heemskerk - Art Director at Massive Damage, Inc! For those who missed his other episodes - he can speak to ANYTHING regarding game development, computer hardware, and scaling performance! Obviously we plan to talk about Next-Gen consoles, GPUs, and CPUs - but remember that he can discuss anything you would want a guest to discuss on this show, so please don't hesitate to submit whatever you want for consideration.

You have ~48 hours to submit, but it would be appreciated if you got them in by Saturday night. :)

As Bryan is "indie" game dev in small company and studio, what influence can you use to make UE5 fix their performance problems if you chose that engine? Either way for a studio once engine is chosen, it could ruin whole company if they switch engine and half overhaul and rewrite major portions of game code midway of development, so there is some vendor lock problem there. What is the relation now in this respect? Couple years back Unity tried to remodel their financial model of engine causing people jumping engines to avoid that business risk. (As background, looking hiking wafer prices and growing hardware prices for better performance, optimization fixes seem to be more and more important in coming years for game devs to reach big audience.... old attitude of "just get 5090" will leave you with maybe 1000 players, nowhere enough base for even indie nowadays... and software has lot of room to be better nowadays. Consoles get some of these as package with custom hardware and vendor optimizing OS and software/drivers but that doesnt help multiplatform games on pc and possibly smartphones/tablets)

Hello Tom and Bryan, I have a feeling the next big thing in gaming (or at least what should be) is a massive upgrade to physics simulations. Do you think AI will be used to approximate simulations? Also, as physics gets better over time, will game artists have sway over making physics look part of the game or is it going to be less out of their hands, specifically in the name of "realism" and not necessarily what looks cohesive with the game's art direction

CompressedAIBlocks

Bryan. What do you think of the specs we have for PS6 and Xbox 720 One X as a game dev? They seem pretty promising specifically from the area density and RAM side.

CompressedAIBlocks

A lot of games are 1080p or even sub 1080p (800p-1152p seems common on more demanding titles, even on certain titles with the PS5 Pro). Do you think we'll see a bump in native resolution to 1440p+ before upscaling is applied next gen or just better quality levels of upscaling?

Nolen

With your recent leak that the PS6 will likely have up to 40GB of total unified RAM, how do you feel that the upcoming SUPER GPUs (or I guess any future GPUs with 18-24 GB of VRAM) will hold up in the long term? Will 18 GB GPUs become the 8 GB of the PS6 era?

CompressedAIBlocks

I've always been okay with upscaling even before DLSS/FSR as long as it's done within reason and doesn't *completely* destroy image quality. I feel with FSR 4.x and DLSS 4.x we're at a place where it looks 95-98% of the image quality of native, or slightly better if you use things like FSR Native/DLAA. Do you guys think we're at a place that the average enthusiast (is that a even a thing?) will finally accept upscaling? I feel so many people do not want to accept it but newest upscaling looks pretty damn good it seems like it's finally an always on thing if you can't hit your target performance.

CompressedAIBlocks

Bryan, which newest CPU gen interests you more from a developer perspective? Zen 6 or Nova Lake.

CompressedAIBlocks

Will PS5/XSX drop support quicker than PS4/XBO? They're a quite a bit more modern in terms of design wise, but we just experienced a generation that was really held back from supporting 2013 levels of hardware (and arguably weaker than that if you look at the CPUs). I personally don't want my PS6 to feel held back the same way my PS5 feels...but I'd understand why the PS5 could potentially be supported longer.

Hi Tom and Bryan, I know the answer to this question is speculation but I’m curious to hear your answer. With GTA6 running at 30fps on base PS5, do you think that’s a CPU bottleneck or GPU bottleneck? Is there any chance of a 40fps or 60fps mode on PS5 Pro? I’m asking because Digital Foundry said Space Marine was CPU bottlenecked, but performance was better on Series X which has a wider GPU than PS5. The game is very CPU heavy for sure, but we’ve seen this kind of thing with the PS5 Pro version of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Games in which a CPU bottleneck is assumed, but add more GPU and better upscaling and boom faster performance. What are your thoughts?

Hi Tom and Bryan, With Nvidia continuing to push Frame gen and Amd having their own version within FSR; do you think that the next consoles will attempt to make frame gen more accessible to devs or even add it to their next-gen marketing?

Prior is the theme 999

As a game developer which is more interesting to you? The PS Handheld or the PS6 home console?

Nolen

I would love this question to be covered. From listening to MLID over the years, it sounds like devs hate frame gen. But is this basically an inevitable future?

RasterBlaster

Can UE5 be run on any AMD APU laptops? What are the limitations to what UE5 can do on an AMD APU? Will ROCm help UE5 performance on AMD in the future?

Cleansweep

Bryan, how do feel about Nvidia's insistence that neural rendering is going to be the next big thing in gaming, and game devs should all move to it?

Nolen

Hey Bryan! I try to keep my questions to just one, but I just found out that you launched a Kickstarter! I would love to hear more about the game you're working on 🙂

AI-Soldier789

The Nintendo Switch 2 uses Micro express SD-Cards which have Gen3 reading speeds so I guess the internal storage is similar. Do they maintain that read speed for longer durations and will that be a problem future. Will games like Elder Scrolls 6 run on that given development for it started 2 years ago.

Jay Buffay (Yes I Know It's Spelled Wrong)

With upcoming Playstation architecture going for expansive ai features like generative texture randomizatuon ~ bird plumage color generation, generated dialogue and similar things... what is the future of this gonna be for pc? Gpus with significangly more vram? (lol) npus on the cpu leveraging system ram? separate add in cards?

JackalZ

Hello Tom and Bryan, I would like to hear a dev's thoughts about developing for next gen. How can a team guestimate for AI features? How can you approximate the method of AI implementation in games, or will you at all? After what time is it plausible to see first implementations of AI in games? Thank you!

Tyler Lederer

I'm also curious how frame gen and other AI features will be marketed for PS6. The marketing for PSSR and the PS5 Pro didn't translate well over YouTube videos. PSSR is also still a hit or miss whether a dev team uses it or not. Will frame gen be similar? I'd like for these tools to help devs not be a burden for them.

Obsidian Red

How do you think the NPU of modern laptops can be utilised by games in the future? Do you think it will be constrained to running LLM’s locally for NPC dialogue interactions - or could it be used to partially compensate for mobile devices having a restricted power budget and weaker GPU’s (vs desktops) and instead be harnessed to augment the iGPU for tasks like upscaling or other tasks to improve visuals?

BespokeEP

I don't think there has been any indication of frame rate targets for GTA6 officially released. And we still have no clue how much PSSR2 in the Pro will help. Remember we haven't had a GTA since PS3. We have no clue what sort of optimization have been made to their engine. I mean UE5 was thought to be stuck at 30fps this gen and now games are running at 60 thanks to optimizations... Same hardware, but now double the frame rate. People don't seem to realize how big of a difference optimization makes.

Imagine a gun was up to your head and you had to answer: if the AI market suffers a crash between today and the next generation of gamer graphics cards, how do you think Nvidia would segment their lineup in terms of price? And how would AMD answer? How do you see the market reorganizing itself? I honestly wonder if Nvidia would start to take better care of the gamer market again, or they'd just try to follow the next trend. Considering just how stubborn they have been with gamers recently, I wouldn't be surprised if they just straight up refused to give us good deals again, specially at the low end. Love from Brazil 🇧🇷❤️ RIP 10XX series.

AI Generated Brazilian Gamer

About the new console generation, if the leaks about the ~10x rt and ~2,5x raster perf boost turn out correct, what would this new level of poweeeer make possible in terms of visuals, systems and design in new games if that became the new baseline? And also, will games even be able to make use of all that performance, considering they will probably have to support ps5 for god knows how many years in the future?

BespokeEP

You need to go watch Mystic Ryan's video titled "Everyone's wrong about PS4 Still Getting Games. Here's why.". The conclusion of the video is PS4 hasn't received support for nearly as long as previous gens. Sony also never mandates support, but they do cut it off. I think if Devs really start taking advantage of RT/PT, support for PS5 will be much less common. But people seem to forget that out of the 1000 or so games that release every year, only about 10-15 are big AAA games using cutting edge technology

AI Generated Brazilian Gamer

Guys, people always used talk online about how consoles held back the graphics innovation in the games industry. But honestly, when I look at the circumstances of the gaming market nowadays, what I feel is actually holding back the industry isn't the ps5 (and dare I say, even the ps4, as many AAA games aren't supporting it anymore), but Nvidia. Am I crazy here? We have been stagnated in terms of VRAM for years at the low end, where most gamers buy at, and even tho we could also blame AMD for that, I think when you take in consideration just how much of the market (and its trends) is controlled by Nvidia with their massive marketshare and capilarization of proprietary technologies, I don't think it is the consoles that are holding back Innovation, but Nvidia's stubborness to give gamers a good amount of vram. Hear me out: Nvidia made the terrible mistake of making a 12gb 3060, which made the next 4 years of 60s cards with 8gb sound odd and out of place. What if instead of that, they had given us 12gb again and again? Many more gamers would have upgraded from their ancient 10xx, 20xx and even the more recent 30xx cards by now, specially because devs would probably feel more comfortable rising the minimum requirements and it would press gamers in older generations to upgrade faster. So my question is: putting into perspective the proportion of the market owned by Nvidia and their control over many leading industry technologies, does it make sense to affirm that the deliberate decision of forcing most of the pc market (because that is what the low end is) to play on 8gb cards has been and will be holding back AAA gaming graphics for the foreseeable future?

BespokeEP

What are the chances that the 3 Zen 6 cores in Magnus are for the OS? I mean Xbox's OS has always been extremely slow and chunky, and now with windows, multiple storefronts, and I would assume they will have quick resume again (which is a pointless resource hog imo). I imagine they will need quite a Beefy CPU and a lot more RAM dedicated to running it than ever before. I can see MS needing 4GB of GDDR7 for the OS

Dave W Mueller

To: Tom and Guest I’ve been enjoying the leaks on Playstation 6 and Microsoft Xbox “Magnus” and the conversations you have had with guests and on Broken Silicon. It’s also nice seeing other YouTubers taking your leaks serious and giving you credit for it. However, while there is some hype, I also feel a bit disappointed. It seems like Sony is once again lacking in innovation. Nintendo and to some extent, Valve did all the heavy lifting and now it’s ok for Sony to jump back into a market they abandoned and everyone loves them for it. You say you want Microsoft and Nintendo to be exclusively a publisher, but why does Sony even need to exist. At least Nintendo and Microsoft are adding stuff to the console market. Sony is going to have an PS6 S model (Microsoft), Sony is going to have improved Cloud services (Microsoft), Sony is going to have a portable version PS6 (Nintendo), and Sony is also going to have the PS6. It feels like the only thing Sony is good at is being Sony and Sony is a boring copycat that wants to out spec it's competition. However, my biggest disappointment in the leaks is Microsoft. This is the company that needs to go for it or why bother (I think you have said this a few times) and when I say go for it, I don’t mean a complete powerhouse, I mean Khadis Mind. Tell me what you think of this route for Microsoft (and to some extend Sony). 1. Xbox is not a console, it’s a platform. A platform that was only on Xbox Hardware is now, now runs on a STEAM OS like version of Windows, iOS, and Android. 2. They will emulate and make a deal for backwards compatibility with other publishers by doing the conversion themselves. If you own a disc of a previous console you can convert it into a XBoxAnywhere (for a fee or apart of a membership for compensation) Digit Game. Initially you have to do this at Game Stop who they re-partner up with. Eventually, you can do it on Xbox Series consoles or an approved external Blu-ray drive. 3. Phil Spencer gone or demoted to President of Microsoft Gaming Publishing Studios. Phil, will be under Sarah Bond becomes the new CEO (it’s pretty much already happened) of Microsoft Gaming. 4. While the Xbox Platform works on any version of Windows. There will be hardware, called the Microsoft Gaming Blade. A sleek miniPC with only two connections USB C for power and another connector to move everything on a PCI-5 buslines. The Blade is about or on par with the Series X and comes with an I/O dock. It comes in at the PS6 S price. It’s loaded on CPU and Memory End so developers can scale to the GPU. It outputs 1080p 90fps/4K 30fps in it’s dock, but can call upon it’s Cloud Services to bump up the resolutions in many games. This hardware will be running on Windows 12 – Xbox Platform Edition (Bezzite/Steam OS style version of Windows). 5. Not enough power for you, guess what we an I/O dock with a discrete GPU called the Xbox Enhancer Dock ($500-$600) that will push it to 4k 60-120fps. Which can on the fly share system memory of the blade to add more graphical power along with the CPU. I don’t know maybe AMD doesn’t have the capability of doing this. 6. In addition, there is a controller attached to a screen with a battery called the Blade On the Go for $150-$200. You connect to the Blade to this accessory and now you have a Switch 2 competitor. 7. Because you juiced up the CPU you can come out with Xbox Enhancer Dock 2 four to five years in to substitute as a “Pro” model. Instead of whole new console. DWDR

This question is mostly for Bryan. Just wondering what the developer sentiment around Xbox is? They have spent most of this entire gen telling people that they don't need, and shouldn't buy an Xbox, because everything is an Xbox lol. But if your game isn't on gamepass, the only place you can make money in the Xbox ecosystem is on an ACTUAL XBOX. And now they are seemingly releasing the most expensive console of all time, to an audience that has been trained to spend as little money as possible. Make it make sense!! Is their marketing slogan just going to be "whatevs" lol. The xbox whatevs would be a great name. As a former fan of Xbox, it is so frustrating to see the majority of the fan base cheer on the horrible direction Phil Spencer has taken the brand

Girthmaxxer

What do you think about AI features in games like AI generated NPC dialogue and if this will compromise the artistic integrity of games to be a curated experience created by developers for the player? NPC dialogue options are written in very specific ways by developers to tell a story and a ChatGPT response could ruin that.

HaveAGoodDay

Due to the lacklisters support of games for psvr 2, I was wondering if unreal engine 5 has the option to take a regular game and compile it for VR, or do you get to start off with VR from the start?

HaveAGoodDay

With all the ai expectations for the next gen, how fast do these AI assets happen in real time, or do they got to compile and run at the beginning of a level?

dietzi96

Hi Tom, do you have any information about FP4 support in RDNA5?

Chris Rijk

Let’s say you were in the early planning stages for a game that would initially launch on the PS6 - would you consider using path tracing? Would it depend more on the type of game or more on what performance and quality was possible? When porting to other platforms with much weaker RT hardware, wouldn’t you have to create a normal rasterised version of the game anyway though, so would it really be worth using path tracing in the first place?

Prior is the theme 999

what are your thoughts on the UE5 tech demo for the witcher 4 and all the supposed optimizations they claim they were able to do? Is UE5 where it needs to be going forward?

Prior is the theme 999

It feels like a lot of the cards out right now only perform as "good" as they do because of ps4 support, but now that is coming to an end soon and the ps6 supposedly making 5090 raytracing standard with 30gb+ of vram, im almost seeing another vram situation but this time its worse. some cards already struggle to launch indiana jones what will happen with the games in two years built for the minimun of the ps5's 16gb and mainly the 30+ with the ps6?

AI Generated Brazilian Gamer

Do you guys think we are finally reaching the end of the 8gb era for gpus in the 250ish dollar range? It wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia just abandoned this price point at all instead of providing us with acceptable amounts of VRAM, or launched a 6050 with 8gb once again. If that were to happen, what consequences do you guys think would happen to the pc gaming ecosystem? Specially considering just how much vram the ps6 and Xbox Whatever are rumored to get (up to 40gbs), there would be a HUGE discrepancy between console and pcs in this aspect. How do you think this would affect the development of new games both in pc and consoles? (Yes, I know there's the b580 but it almost doesn't count)

Prior is the theme 999

The ps4 held the ps5 back a lot, will the ps5 hold the ps6 back to the same degree or is the ps5 a good/better base to start from compared to the ps4?

Dark Helmet

If a game were designed from the ground up for only ray-tracing, do you think next gen GPU's will have enough power for a 4K/60 path-tracing experience? On a side-note, what would be involved in making such a game, could existing engines be used but have rasterization pulled out of them?

MelodicArmor

Welcome back Bryan! Not long ago we were discussing issues with CPU usage in UE5. What was interesting is that in the middle of our conversation, Matt Alderon found this piece of data that I think is extremely telling: " //#todo-rco: Won't work multithreaded! TArray DescriptorSetHandles; " He then went on to comment that "Our RHI programmer is crashing out reading this code." Now I know that is not telling the full story but to me it is showing a fundamental issue. I also get that this is in Vulkan. Why in the would Unreal not give the engine the treatment it needs to use the hardware correctly? Would this and other similar issues only exasperate the CPU overhead issue that Intel and Nvidia are facing? Woud it cause other issues? To me it seems that "yes UE5 is made for RTTX 6090" but I just don't see how anyone can work with this when even the engine designer leaves it half broken.

danm1988

Hey guys, could you comment on whether or not Intel's Arrow Lake refresh APO 2.0 will actually lead to a realistic competitive advantage for intel and if this sets up a continued approach with Nova Lake (e.g. APO 3.0?) or is it limited just to salvage Arrow Lake?

AnotherChris

Hey Bryan, UE5 obviously has performance problems, it is so known for the performance problems that it almost seems like fundamental changes need to happen to the engine. Could they possibly develop a new engine that could use the same ecosystem but be specifically for hitting better frame rates? So in summary a UE5 Quality and UE5 performance variants with some possible interplay.

Jamwap

Hey Tom and Bryan. We've heard that Nintendo is barely shipping out dev kits to game developers. It seems like Nintendo wants to build its own ecosystem where the switch mainly consists of 1st party games. Why would they ever want this? Doesn't this just mean they make less money? Especially since historically the success of their consoles seems to be tied to whether or not they get 3rd party adoption. Thanks!
